Pso-Style Social Influence In An Ant Colony Algorithm For Continuous-Domain Optimization, Ashraf M. Abdelbar, Donald C. Wunsch
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
ACOR is a well-established Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm for continuous-domain optimization. In this paper, we propose an extension (which we call ACOR∗) in which several fundamental modifications are made to ACOR's solution construction process, including the incorporation of a social influence mechanism borrowed from Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Our modifications to the ACOR algorithm are intended to promote search diversity and combat premature convergence. We experimentally evaluate our proposal in the context of training feedforward neural networks for classification using 65 widely used datasets from the University of California Irvine (UCI) repository, as well as the optimization of several …

PRAIRIE: Pioneering Responsible AI for Research, Innovation, and Education
As AI rapidly reshapes how we work and learn, employers increasingly seek graduates who can think before they prompt, exercising judgment under pressure rather than merely producing output. Yet students are praised for AI use in one course and penalized for it in the next, and faculty are left to lead responsibly on shifting ground, with no shared language to guide them.
This paper introduces the PRAIRIE Framework for AI Integration, a shift from reactive gatekeeping toward proactive stewardship. It emerged from a qualitative sentiment analysis of three communities (students, faculty, and industry partners) whose concerns converged on one need: …

Machine learning is a valuable approach for the processing and analysis of complex information. By estimating relationships from recorded data, machine learning methodologies can be effective strategies for pattern recognition, enabling investigations and technological applications based thereon. The potential for improved understanding of high-dimensional data has drawn interest towards machine learning from across the sciences, including the research and development of new and improved material systems. In the context of experimental materials research, much of the reported efforts to incorporate machine learning into conventional practice have been primarily focused on either the enhanced analysis of characterization experiment data or the …
Computational Insights Into Nucleosome Dynamics In Epigenetics Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Rutika Patel
Computational Insights Into Nucleosome Dynamics In Epigenetics Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Rutika Patel
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Nucleosome core particles (NCP) are the building blocks that form a highly organized and compact chromatin structure. Nucleosomes package DNA in the nucleus of eukaryotic cells. The NCP consists of about 147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around the histone octamer, with 1.65 superhelical turns in a left-handed manner. The histone octamer is composed of two copies of H3, H4, H2A, and H2B. Together with histone H1 and linker DNA, they further assemble into a higher-order chromatin structure. The nucleosome complex is stabilized by electrostatic interactions between positively charged histone residues and the negatively charged DNA backbone. To effectively access …

Extensive And Intensive Margin Labor Supply On Ride-Sourcing Platforms, Hao Sun, Hai Wang, Zhixi Wan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The rapid expansion of ride-sourcing platforms has enabled freelance drivers to flexibly determine both their participation and working hours. Understanding this flexible labor supply behavior is essential for managing platform capacity and evaluating the impacts of pricing and incentive policies on driver welfare. This study develops a labor supply model in which drivers optimally choose whether to participate (extensive margin) and how long to work (intensive margin) to maximize their utility from consumption and leisure. The model incorporates heterogeneity in drivers’ other income, idle time, and participation costs, allowing us to analytically characterize equilibrium labor supply decisions. The results show …

To Wait Or To Transfer? A Three-Level Optimization Framework For Intermodal Transfer Coordination In First Train Timetabling And Bus Bridging Services Management, Hao Li, Liujiang Kang, Norman Weik, Huijun Sun, Qingying Lai, Zhiguang Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This study addresses the integrated optimization of the first train timetabling and bus bridging service design (FTT-BBSD) for morning transfer challenges, two critical but interdependent passenger services in the public transit system. In contrast to most existing studies and conventional approaches, this study explicitly models the influence of passenger path choices and transfer mode selections on FTT-BBSD. Through a novel dual-level network representation that integrates subway and bus systems, we formulate the FTT-BBSD problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model. The model simultaneously determines subway and bus timetables and bridging line deployment to minimize total travel time for all first …

Hydpn: A Hybrid Deep Reinforcement Learning, Programming, And Neighborhood Operations Framework For Integrated Scheduling On Parallel Batch Processing Machines, Yuqi Wang, He Luo, Guoqiang Wang, Zhaoxia Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Batch processing machines (BPMs) are widely used in industries such as semiconductors, metal processing, and healthcare, where jobs are processed in batches. As production, inventory, and distribution become increasingly integrated to improve efficiency, research on their joint scheduling in parallel BPM environments remains scarce. This paper addresses the integrated scheduling problem in parallel BPMs, involving production, inventory, and distribution stages, with the objective of minimizing total costs. A unified cost-based model is first formulated, applicable to both in-facility and external distribution scenarios. A hybrid algorithm framework, HyDPN, combining deep reinforcement learning, dynamic programming, and neighborhood operations is proposed. Extensive experiments …

Recent advances in Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models have enabled robots to execute increasingly complex tasks. However, VLA models trained through imitation learning struggle to operate reliably in dynamic environments and often fail under Out-of-Distribution (OOD) conditions. To address this issue, we propose Robot-Conditioned Normalizing Flow(RC-NF), a real-time monitoring model for robotic anomaly detection and intervention that ensures the robot's state and the object's motion trajectory align with the task. RC-NF decouples the processing of task-aware robot and object states within the normalizing flow. It requires only positive samples for unsupervised training and calculates accurate robotic anomaly scores during inference through the …
Holistic Dram Enhancements: From Intrinsic In-Memory Operations To Robust Security Mechanisms, Ranyang Zhou
Holistic Dram Enhancements: From Intrinsic In-Memory Operations To Robust Security Mechanisms, Ranyang Zhou
Dissertations
Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) is both the performance bottleneck and a critical security boundary of modern computing systems. Its physical properties make it an attractive substrate for near-data computation—yet those same properties expose it to disturbance-based hardware attacks. This dissertation argues that these two dimensions are not independent: the architectural choices that make DRAM efficient also reshape its threat landscape. Addressing both requires a unified approach to memory architecture and security co-design.
The first part of this dissertation attacks the memory wall through four processing-in-DRAM (PIM) frameworks. ReD-LUT and LT-PIM unify lookup-table arithmetic with charge-sharing logic, achieving up to 37.8x …
A Generative Ai-Driven Computational Framework For Industry-Scale Discovery Of Novel Battery Materials, Joy Datta
Dissertations
The growing demand for sustainable, high-energy-density electrochemical storage has motivated the exploration of multivalent-ion batteries based on earth-abundant elements such as aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. While multivalent charge carriers offer higher theoretical energy density than lithium, their practical deployment is hindered by sluggish ion transport, strong ion-host interactions, and structural degradation of electrode materials. Identifying host materials that can reversibly accommodate multivalent ions while maintaining structural integrity remains a fundamental challenge. The dissertation develops a scalable, end-to-end computational framework that integrates density functional theory (DFT), machine learning (ML), and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to accelerate the discovery of next-generation …
Toward Learning-Based Reconstruction And Part Decomposition Of Man-Made 3d Geometry: Neural Implicit Representations And Scalable Supervision, Shen Fan
Dissertations
Digital three-dimensional (3D) models are central to engineering design, analysis, and manufacturing, but learning pipelines for man-made geometry often operate on sampled carriers that do not preserve all of the structure present in exact CAD representations. This dissertation studies learning-based reconstruction and part decomposition for structured man-made 3D geometry, from general object benchmarks to CAD-derived datasets, with a focus on neural implicit representations trained from signed-distance samples, point clouds, and tessellated meshes. The goal is to make these models more accurate, more part-aware, and more consistently supervised.
First, signed distance function (SDF) reconstruction with implicit neural representations is improved through …

Adaptive Multimodal Smart Home Control On A Raspberry Pi 5 Using Hand Gestures, Voice Cues, And User Feedback, Vaibhav Bora
Theses
A real time multimodal smart home control system deployed on a Raspberry Pi 5 is presented. The system combines hand gestures, short voice cues, and proximity aware interaction to execute household commands such as light brightness control, fan speed adjustment, and stop or kill switch actions. Lightweight gesture and keyword spotting voice classifiers were trained offline and exported to TensorFlow Lite for efficient on device inference. For more natural spoken phrases, the system additionally integrates a locally deployed pretrained offline ASR component rather than a speech recognizer trained from scratch. Using a USB camera and microphone, the system operates fully …
Robustness Of Ai-Driven Histopathology Under Real-World Adversarial Examples, Ruchik N. Yajnik
Robustness Of Ai-Driven Histopathology Under Real-World Adversarial Examples, Ruchik N. Yajnik
Theses
This robustness of histopathology classification models under adversarial and real-world perturbations resembling clinical artifacts is being investigated.
Using whole-slide images from the CAMELYON17 cohort, four representative architectures—ResNet-18, ResNet-50, HIPT-2MLP, and ViT-B/16 —are benchmarked across controlled pixel-level distortions and artifact-like transformations. Adversarial methods include iterative Fast Gradient Sign, Projected Gradient Descent, Salt-and-Pepper noise, and the Adversarial Watermark—Stain Shift (AWSS). Three defense strategies—Randomized Smoothing, Adversarial Training, and an Artifact Detector—are evaluated for their ability to preserve diagnostic accuracy and model reliability. Structured perturbations consistently degrade performance, with transformer-based models showing the greatest sensitivity. The benchmark developed here offers a reproducible framework for …

High-Throughput Robotic Ethanol Inhibition Assays For Engineered Thermophilic Biofuel Strains, Kevin He, Daniel Olson, Marybeth Maloney, Anthony Lanahan
Wetterhahn Science Symposium Posters
Ethanol stress assays are commonly used to evaluate microbial tolerance, metabolic adaptation, and fermentation performance. However, manual liquid handling introduces variability across replicate wells and small-volume pipetting steps, limiting reproducibility and throughput. This study developed an automated OT-2 robotic workflow to generate replicated ethanol concentration gradients for high-throughput inhibition assays in engineered thermophilic biofuel strains. Kinetic plate-reader measurements were used to quantify ethanol-dependent growth responses under anaerobic fermentation conditions. The reasearch question is: How do engineered thermophilic biofuel strains differ in ethanol-dependent growth inhibition under anaerobic fermentation conditions, and can automated robotic assays improve the reproducibility of these measurements? Can …
Enhanced Population Mean Estimation Using An Exponential Estimator With Known Medians Of Dual Auxiliary Variables Within A Neutrosophic Approach: Applications In Agricultural Yield Prediction, Anchal Yadav, Mukesh Kumar
Enhanced Population Mean Estimation Using An Exponential Estimator With Known Medians Of Dual Auxiliary Variables Within A Neutrosophic Approach: Applications In Agricultural Yield Prediction, Anchal Yadav, Mukesh Kumar
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
In classical statistical theory, estimation of population parameters is generally carried out under the assumption that all observed data are precise, complete, and free from ambiguity. However, in many practical and real-world situations, data often deviate from these ideal conditions and instead appear in vague, uncertain, or interval-valued forms. Such imperfections reduce the effectiveness of traditional estimation techniques and motivate the development of more flexible and robust methodologies. To address these challenges, several improved estimators, particularly neutrosophic ratio-type estimators and their advanced extensions, have been proposed in recent literature. In this study, a new estimator known as the two auxiliary …

On Some Properties Of Generalised Regular Anti-Topological Space, Bhimraj Basumatary, Gugu Narzary, Jeevan Krishna Khaklary
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This article studies Regular Anti-open sets and Generalised Regular Anti-open sets within a topological framework, addressing the limited development of anti-open structures in generalised topology. We introduce Regular Anti-open sets and establish their fundamental properties. The study is extended by defining Generalised Regular Anti-open sets, providing a broader and more flexible class of sets. Furthermore, the notions of GR-interior and GR-closure are introduced and analyzed, and their essential properties are obtained. The results contribute to a clearer understanding of generalized anti-open structures and provide a basis for further research in topology.

Optimization Of A Multi-Item Supply Chain Model With Shortages Under Parametric Type-2 Interval Environments, Sourav Kumar Kumar Giri, Totan Garai, Sahidul Islam, Haridas Mondal, Shariful Alam
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Modern supply chain systems frequently operate in environments where demand, costs and inventory-related parameters are uncertain and difficult to estimate accurately. These uncertainties become more critical in multi-objective decision-making situations, where decision makers must simultaneously balance several conflicting goals. Conventional optimization techniques often fail to represent the ambiguity and vagueness present in practical decision environments. To overcome these limitations, this study develops a multi-item supply chain model for a single supplier and a single buyer by incorporating Type-2 interval representations into the modelling framework. The proposed approach introduces a structured set of arithmetic operations for Type-2 intervals to manage uncertain …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
This study introduces and analyses new subclasses of analytic functions by applying the Salagean derivative operator to the Neutrosophic Generalized Poisson Distribution (NGPD) series. We develop a model where the mean parameter is treated as an interval or set to account for indeterminacy in complex systems. By employing Stirling numbers of the second kind and decreasing factorials, we derive necessary and sufficient coefficient inequalities and inclusion relations for these new subclasses. Numerical results and graphical illustrations demonstrate the sensitivity of these functions to orientation and the neutrosophic parameter, providing a framework for applications in fields like medical imaging and network …

A Goal Programming Approach For Finding The Best Compromise Solution Of Multiobjective Linear Programming Under Neutrosophic Environment, Sultan S. Alodhaibi, Hamiden Abd El- Wahed Khalifa
Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Decision problems often involve multiple objectives that conflict, making simultaneous optimization impossible. These problems require trade-offs to achieve a solution that balances the competing goals. In this paper, the detailed discussion that is related to linear programming (SVTrNFMOLP) with single valued trapezoidal neutrosophic numbers is made. Furthermore, this study deals with all the related parameters and discussion. As rank function and due to its definition, the SVTrNFMOLP is transformed in the crisp MOLP. It is noticed that goal programming is best to get the best compromise solution. The advantages of the proposed approach are: The use of Tr allows the …
Replication And Architectural Enhancement Of Omni Aggregation Networks, Matteo Calviello
Replication And Architectural Enhancement Of Omni Aggregation Networks, Matteo Calviello
Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications
Single Image Super-Resolution (SISR) reconstructs high-resolution images from low-resolution inputs, a capability valuable across many application domains. This thesis focuses on the replication and architectural enhancement of the Omni Aggregation Network (OAN), a lightweight super-resolution architecture designed to balance reconstruction quality with computational efficiency through a novel omni-axis self-attention mechanism.
Independent replication remains a persistent challenge in machine learning research, and this work addresses that issue directly. Initial replication attempts trailed the original reported results by approximately 6-10% in performance metrics before several undocumented implementation details were identified. After correcting these discrepancies, the replicated implementation achieved results within 4% of …
Hierarchical Motion Planning Of Mobile Robot Based On Dynamic Corridor Inflation And Convex Optimization, Dingkun Zhang, Haizhao Liang
Hierarchical Motion Planning Of Mobile Robot Based On Dynamic Corridor Inflation And Convex Optimization, Dingkun Zhang, Haizhao Liang
Journal of System Simulation
Motion planning for robots with Ackermann chassis in dynamic complex environments faces nonholonomic constraints and kinematic-dynamic coupling challenges. However, traditional methods suffer from path redundancy, random fluctuations, and local optimality. A hierarchical motion planning method based on dynamic corridor inflation and convex optimization is proposed. Topologically sparse paths are generated by fusing the Ramer-Douglas-Peucker (RDP) path compression operator with the A* algorithm to reduce redundant path points' interference with backend optimization. Dynamic corridor inflation strategies are designed considering Ackermann steering characteristics, and safe corridors satisfying kinematic constraints are constructed via convex decomposition. Corridor constraints are then transformed into linear inequalities …

Journal of System Simulation
To address the problems of high missed detection rate and inaccurate judgment of wearing compliance when multi-scale and multi-category targets of laboratory personnel's safety protective equipment are detected in a complex laboratory environment, this paper proposes a laboratory personnel's standard personal protective equipment (PPE) wearing detection method (multi-scale multi- target joint key point detection method, MSMT-JKDM) that integrates multi-scale features and human keypoints. The multi-scale adaptive down sampling (MSA-Down) module and the cascaded group attention transformer (CGA Former) are introduced to enhance the feature representation ability of PPE (especially small targets such as goggles and gloves) in laboratory detection scenarios, …

Power Flow Calculation Based On Block-Encoded Adiabatic Quantum Newton-Raphson Method, Shengchao Jiang, Yunqing Pei, Hongying Zhai, Guojian Wu, Fang Gao
Journal of System Simulation
To overcome the efficiency bottleneck of the traditional Newton-Raphson (NR)method in high- dimensional power flow calculations for modern power systems and the constraints of variational quantum algorithm frameworks, this paper proposed a power flow calculation framework integrating block encoding technology and adiabatic quantum computing principles. Based on block encoding technology, adiabatic quantum theory, and the NR method, a block-encoded adiabatic quantum power flow calculation framework (BQ-NR) was constructed. The NR correction equations were mapped to a quantum system, and the quantum state encoding of the correction equations was realized by constructing an extended Hermitian matrix and a projection operator; a …

To address the lack of speed regulation mechanism and the high dispersion of operational time in the current manual driving mode, this paper proposes an automatic speed guidance method for trams at intersections. Considering the speed disturbances caused by potential traffic conflicts at intersections, an initial decision point for safe passage speed at an intersection is established, dividing the operational curve into deterministic segments and disturbance-response segments. To verify the effectiveness of the method, a case study of Songjiang Tram Line 1 is conducted.Driving simulation experiments are performed to obtain manual driving trajectories, and a dynamic trajectory simulation model …

To address the influence of the abnormal pose of the robot actuator on the robot trajectory, an adaptive planning and adjustment method of trajectory based on virtual-real fusion was proposed. AR technology was introduced to couple with the robot kinematics model, and the hardware dependence on multiple sensors was replaced by synchronous comparison of three-dimensional virtual and real poses; AR gestures and voice interaction were combined to simplify the operation process; based on the actual pose of the actuator, the trajectory of the robot terminal axis was dynamically adjusted. The experimental results show that this method breaks through the technical …

Journal of System Simulation
To address the problem of insufficient prediction accuracy of excavation resistance in heterogeneous cohesive soil, a spatial calculation model of excavation resistance at each excavation stage under heterogeneous soil conditions was proposedbased on the cutting wedge model, comprehensively considering multi-dimensional factors such as bucket geometry, side plate effect, lateral force, and inertia. By taking a small crawler hydraulic excavator as the research object, a coupled simulation model of boom multi-body dynamics and soil-rock particle discrete element was established, and the theoretical model was validated through the co-simulation of excavation operations. The simulation results indicate that under the working …

Ultra-Short-Term Photovoltaic Power Prediction Based On Improved Patchtst Considering Data Drift, Huawei Mei, Penghui Yang, Yang Yu
Journal of System Simulation
Existing PV power prediction methods often suffer from limited accuracy and robustness due to three key shortcomings: relying on single-point mapping that cannot fully extract local temporal patterns; inadequate exploration of the global temporal dependencies in PV output, and failure to account for prevalent data drift phenomena. To overcome these limitations,an improved patch time series transformer (PatchTST) based approach is proposed for ultra-short-term PV power prediction. The methodology applies rough set theory for feature dimensionality reduction, effectively preserving critical decision information by analyzing both feature-label relationships and inter-feature correlations. An enhanced PatchTST model with a modified channel-independent mechanism extracts …

Journal of System Simulation
Under complex road conditions, the thin and elongated structure and small proportion of lanes lead to blurred visual features and insufficient positioning accuracy, which in turn threatens the road safety of autonomous driving. To address these issues, a 3D lane detection method or graph-based point and lane optimization network (GPLNet), based on graph relationship optimization integrating point and lane features, was proposed. Preliminary feature extraction was completed by the backbone network. 3D spatial positional coding with geometric constraints was obtained through a joint query embedding generation module. A graph relationship optimization network was utilized to perform graph relationship calculation and …

To address the robust identification problem of nonlinear state space models (SSM) with outliers, missing observations, and unknown state equations, this paper proposes a modeling method based on eigenfunction expansion, Gaussian-process state-space models (GP-SSM), and Student-t distribution. The proposed approach consists of: modeling the state transition function using eigenfunctions and pre-encoding the priors of basis function coefficients via GP-SSM to enhance flexibility; modeling observations as a Student-t distribution with unknown parameters to enhance robustness against outliers; proposing the enhanced particle Gibbs with ancestor sampling (EPGAS) algorithm to adapt to state estimation in scenarios with missing observations; and deriving unknown model …
