Nanomanipulation Using Atomic Force Microscope With Drift Compensation, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Nanomanipulation Using Atomic Force Microscope With Drift Compensation, Qinmin Yang, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper proposes an atomic force microscope (AFM) based force controller to push nanoparticles on the substrates since it is tedious for human. A block phase correlation-based algorithm is embedded into the controller for compensating the thermal drift during nanomanipulation. Further, a neural network (NN) is employed to approximate the unknown nanoparticle and substrate contact dynamics including the roughness effects. Using the NN-based adaptive force controller the task of pushing nanoparticles is demonstrated. Finally, using the Lyapunov-based stability analysis, the uniform ultimately boundedness (UUB) of the closed-loop signals is demonstrated

Adaptive Interpolation Algorithms For Temporal-Oriented Datasets, Jun Gao
Adaptive Interpolation Algorithms For Temporal-Oriented Datasets, Jun Gao
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Spatiotemporal datasets can be classified into two categories: temporal-oriented and spatial-oriented datasets depending on whether missing spatiotemporal values are closer to the values of its temporal or spatial neighbors. We present an adaptive spatiotemporal interpolation model that can estimate the missing values in both categories of spatiotemporal datasets. The key parameters of the adaptive spatiotemporal interpolation model can be adjusted based on experience.

Adaptive Neural Network Control And Wireless Sensor Network Based Localization For Uav Formation, H. Wu, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We consider a team of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's) equipped with sensors and motes for wireless communication for the task of navigating to a desired location in a formation. First a neural network (NN)-based control scheme is presented that allows the UAVs to track a desired position and orientation with reference to the neighboring UAVs or obstacles in the environment. Second, we discuss a graph theory-based scheme for discovery, localization and cooperative control. The purpose of the NN cooperative controller is to achieve and maintain the desired formation shape in the presence of unmodeled dynamics and bounded unknown disturbances. Numerical …
Mitigating Insider Threat Using Human Behavior Influence Models, Anthony J. Puleo
Mitigating Insider Threat Using Human Behavior Influence Models, Anthony J. Puleo
Theses and Dissertations
Insider threat is rapidly becoming the largest information security problem that organizations face. With large numbers of personnel having access to internal systems, it is becoming increasingly difficult to protect organizations from malicious insiders. The typical methods of mitigating insider threat are simply not working, primarily because this threat is a people problem, and most mitigation strategies are geared towards profiling and anomaly detection, which are problematic at best. As a result, a new type of model is proposed in this thesis, one that incorporates risk management with human behavioral science. The new risk-based model focuses on observable influences that …

Winning Back The Cup For Distributed Pomdps: Planning Over Continuous Belief Spaces, Pradeep Varakantham, Ranjit Nair, Milind Tambe, Makoto Yokoo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Distributed Partially Observable Markov Decision Problems (Distributed POMDPs) are evolving as a popular approach for modeling multiagent systems, and many different algorithms have been proposed to obtain locally or globally optimal policies. Unfortunately, most of these algorithms have either been explicitly designed or experimentally evaluated assuming knowledge of a starting belief point, an assumption that often does not hold in complex, uncertain domains. Instead, in such domains, it is important for agents to explicitly plan over continuous belief spaces. This paper provides a novel algorithm to explicitly compute finite horizon policies over continuous belief spaces, without restricting the space of …

Paper Session V: Steganography And Terrorist Communications - Current Information And Trends - Tools, Analysis And Future Directions In Steganalysis In Context With Terrorists And Other Criminals, William Eyre, Marcus Rogers
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
In ancient times, users communicated using steganography, “…derived from the Greek words steganos, meaning ‘covered’, and graphein, meaning ‘to write.’” (Singh, 1999, p.5) Steganography facilitates secret, undetected communication. In modern times, in the context of the Global War on Terror, national intelligence and law enforcement agencies need tools to detect hidden information (steganography) in various types of media, most specifically to uncover the placement of hidden information in images. This paper will look at steganography in general terms, presenting the theory of some common steganographic techniques and touching on some theoretical work in steganography. Then a discussion of how to …

Paper Session V: Forensic Software Tools For Cell Phone Subscriber Identity Modules, Wayne Jansen, Rick Ayers
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Cell phones and other handheld devices incorporating cell phone capabilities (e.g., smart phones) are ubiquitous. Besides placing calls, cell phones allow users to perform other tasks such as text messaging and phonebook entry management. When cell phones and cellular devices are involved in a crime or other incident, forensic specialists require tools that allow the proper retrieval and speedy examination of data present on the device. For devices conforming to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standards, certain data such as dialed numbers, text messages, and phonebook entries are maintained on a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM). This paper gives …

Paper Session Iv: Development And Delivery Of Coursework - The Legal/Regulatory/Policy Environment Of Cyberforensics, John W. Bagby, John C. Ruhnka
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
This paper describes a cyber-forensics course that integrates important public policy and legal issues as well as relevant forensic techniques. Cyber-forensics refers to the amalgam of multi-disciplinary activities involved in the identification, gathering, handling, custody, use and security of electronic files and records, involving expertise from the forensic domain, and which produces evidence useful in the proof of facts for both commercial and legal activities. The legal and regulatory environment in which electronic discovery takes place is of critical importance to cyber-forensics experts because the legal process imposes both constraints and opportunities for the effective use of evidence gathered through …

Paper Session Iii: Research Brief: A Curriculum For Teaching Information Technology Investigative Techniques For Auditors, Grover S. Kearns, Elizabeth V. Mulig
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Recent prosecutions of highly publicized white-collar crimes combined with public outrage have resulted in heightened regulation and greater emphasis on systems of internal control. Because both white-collar and cybercrimes are usually perpetrated through computers, auditors’ knowledge of information technology (IT) is now more vital than ever. However, preserving digital evidence and investigative techniques, which can be essential to fraud examinations, are not skills frequently taught in accounting programs. Furthermore, many students are not instructed in the use of computer assisted auditing tools and techniques – applications that might uncover fraudulent activity. Only a limited number of university-level accounting classes provide …

Paper Session Ii: Forensic Scene Documentation Using Mobile Technology, Ibrahim Baggili
Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law
This paper outlines a framework for integrating forensic scene documentation with mobile technology. Currently there are no set standards for documenting a forensic scene. Nonetheless, there is a conceptual framework that forensic scientists and engineers use that includes note taking, scene sketches, photographs, video, and voice interview recordings. This conceptual framework will be the basis that a mobile forensic scene documentation software system is built on. A mobile software system for documenting a forensic scene may help in standardizing forensic scene documentation by regulating the data collection and documentation processes for various forensic disciplines.

Tuqr: A Topology Unaware Qos Routing Protocol For Manets, Ibrahim Zagli
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, the main purpose is to design a new Quality of Service (QoS) Routing Protocol for Mobile ad-hoc Networks that improves packet delivery ratio in QoS constrained communication in comparison to current well known protocols by using distributed multi-path routing. To accomplish that, a new approach to the QoS routing in Mobile ad hoc Networks (MANET) is developed to reduce the effects of the distrustful environment of MANET by keeping a number of suitable paths as high as possible and distributing the decision mechanism among the nodes on the path.
In most current protocols that mainly evaluate and …

Mobius: An Omnidirectional Robotic Platform And Software Architecture For Network Teleoperation, Samuel Aaron Miller
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The following thesis presents the results of a project to develop and test an omnidirectional robotic system (hardware and software) at NASA Langley Research Center's Robotics and Intelligent Machines Lab. The impetus for the project was the unique capabilities of omnidirectional systems. Some of the many potential benefits these systems have include improved material-handling capabilities in constrained environments (such as might be found in extraterrestrial manned habitats), efficient camera-based vehicle teleoperation, and simplified route planning for autonomous robot operations.
The project's focus was to design, build, and test a system that used Mecanum wheels to achieve omnidirectional motion. In addition …

A Comparative Analysis Of Air-To-Ground Engagement Outcomes In The Joint Warfare System (Jwars) And The Jwars-Joint Semi-Automated Forces Federation, Melissa Anne St. Peter
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Multi-resolution modeling is the process by which a single model is created by connecting multiple individual models to describe phenomena at different levels of resolution [1]. "When we change resolutions, replacing a detailed model by a more aggregate one, we must ask whether results are 'consistent'" [2].
There are many methods of determining if the results of two simulations are 'consistent'. However, they are very entailed and require a detailed understanding of the individual models including their functionality, algorithms, and inner workings. A straight forward and rapid way of assessing potential inconsistencies is through a statistical comparison of the model …

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Data, even in small amounts, can be difficult to interpret quickly and efficiently. Data domains are continually expanding and making this data available and usable in collaborative data environment is a challenge that was not addressed by legacy systems. Such a framework would make the existence of a global information sharing system feasible. Visualizing this complex dataset presents a complex task for current static interface solutions. A flexible layered service oriented model is presented in this work to approach this challenge. The visual scope of human perception is largely untapped by today's data visualization applications. Human mental processes are adept …

Intelligent System Applications Based On Genetic Algorithms, Yasin Volkan Pehlivanoglu
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
As a stochastic search method, evolutionary algorithm (EA) is an emergent optimization algorithm mimicking the natural evolution, where a "biological population" evolves over generations to adapt to an environment by selection, recombination, and mutation. When EA is applied to optimization problems, fitness, individual, and genes usually correspond to an objective function value, a design candidate, and design variables, respectively.
One of the key features of EA is that they search from multiple points in design space, instead of moving from a single point as in gradient-based methods. Furthermore, EA works on function evaluations alone and does not require derivatives or …

A Multilane Pipelined Architecture For Real Time Enhancement Of Color Video Streams, Adam Redd Livingston
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Video stream enhancement is a key fixture in a wide variety of applications from video surveillance, automatic navigation, medical imagery, to facial/object recognition systems. When a video stream contains non-uniform lighting it can be difficult to obtain what is in the darker regions without over enhancing brighter regions. The Adaptive and Integrated Neighborhood Dependant Approach for Nonlinear Enhancement (AINDANE) algorithm combines a tunable nonlinear transfer function, convolution by a multi-scale Gaussian kernel, and tunable contrast enhancement to address this problem for a single image. Luminance values are tuned based on the global cumulative distribution function (CDF) of an image. Contrast …
The Reliability Of The Computer Communication Networks Including Mobile Nodes, Sahin Yasar
The Reliability Of The Computer Communication Networks Including Mobile Nodes, Sahin Yasar
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The wireless computer networks have an uncertainty in their structures aside from their big advantages for the users. The environmental conditions, changing locations of the mobile hosts and the changing components in the system can easily affect their reliability. In order to know a system capability performing its functions, keep the reliability at a certain level and/or detect the deficiency of the system, it is necessary to analyze the reliability of a computer communication network including the wired and wireless parts. But the above reasons also make the analysis and a unique solution difficult so a set of algorithms is …

Reversing Ticket Based Probing (Rtbp) Routing For Manet, Turgut Yucel
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The delay-constrained maximum-bandwidth routing problem in MANET (Mobile Ad hoc Networks) is to find the maximum bandwidth path which satisfies a given delay constraint. The research challenge for this problem is that the networking information used for routing may be imprecise. The Ticket-Based Probing (TBP) routing algorithm provides a heuristic approach by using two types of ticket. In this thesis a Reversing Ticket-based Probing (RTBP) routing algorithm is proposed. The RTBP has two novel features compared to the original ticket based probing algorithms. The first feature is using just one type ticket, instead of two types of ticket. RTBP generates …

A Non-Linear Technique For The Enhancement Of Extremely Non-Uniform Lighting Images, Ender Oguslu
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
At night scenes, either the low intensity areas that are under poor light or the high intensity areas that are overexposed cannot be clearly seen. Various image processing techniques have been developed to recover the meaningful information under extremely low lighting conditions. Among these, the algorithms based on integrated neighborhood dependency of pixel characteristics and based on the illuminance reflectance model perform well for improving the visual quality of digital images captured under nonuniform and extremely low lighting conditions. Although these techniques perform well in low lighting conditions, they cannot perform well in overexposed regions under dark environments such as …

A Component Based Formal Ontology Model, A Method For Evaluating Such A Model, And The Results Of An Application Of That Method, Charles Tumitsa
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations
For systems to truly communicate effectively, more than just data interchange is necessary. The systems must achieve conceptual interoperability, which implies communicating with understanding.
The LCIM (Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model) describes a number of levels of interoperability, each of which shows systems with an increased amount of conceptual understanding of the other systems they are communicating with. The lowest levels of this model, technical and syntactic interoperability, are achieved (and there are many existing examples) via data exchange in a number of different ways. Research has shown, however, that to attain higher levels of conceptual understanding, that there must …

Clarifying The Role Of Self-Efficacy And Metacognition As Indicators Of Learning: Construct Development And Test, Trevor T. Moores, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Deborah K. Smith
Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research
We propose extending our understanding of self-efficacy by comparing self-efficacy with a related construct called metacognition. Metacognition involves the monitoring and control of one's thought processes and is often related, as is self-efficacy, to performance on a task. We develop an instrument that attempts to measure both self-efficacy and metacognition with respect to one's performance on a test covering declarative and procedural knowledge (knowing that, and knowing how) of DFDs and ERDs. With data collected from a sample of 124 students, we use partial least squares (PLS) to show that self-efficacy and metacognition are distinct yet related constructs. While self-efficacy …
