System Architecting translates an operational concept into a model of the system to be realized. There is a need for a Data Management Plan (DMP) to be included in the overall system engineering process with the advent of Digital Engineering. Data longevity, accessibility, and integrity can all be improved throughout the system's lifecycle by a well-defined DMP. System engineers use an architecture framework to arrange the system data into several sets of viewpoints. Incorporating a DMP at this point specifies the procedures for gathering, storing, retrieving, and maintaining data to ensure that all interested parties have access to current, correct …

This study examines the detectability and disruptability of covert timing channel traffic in secure drones. The investigation aims to ascertain the effects of multiple interarrival times, distances ranging from 1 to 330 feet, various detection algorithms, and stream sizes between 32-bit …
Online Learning-Driven Human Intent Estimation And Control For Human-Robot Interaction, Irfan Ganie, S. Jagannathan
Online Learning-Driven Human Intent Estimation And Control For Human-Robot Interaction, Irfan Ganie, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a novel Stackelberg-game theoretic multilayer-online learning framework for cooperative control of nonlinear Physical Human-Robot Interaction (pHRI), where the human is modeled as the leader guiding a robot follower. This hierarchical interaction is captured as a dynamic Stackelberg game, with the human's intention estimated in real-time through online multilayer neural networks (MNNs). We introduce SVD-based weight update laws for actor-critic MNNs, which approximate value functions and control inputs for both human and robot, eliminating the need for predefined basis functions. In this framework, the human objective is first inferred and used to guide the robot actions by shaping …

Improved Optimal Tracking Of Uncertain Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems Using Experience Replay, Maxwell Geiger, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper addresses the infinite horizon optimal tracking control problem for partially uncertain control-affine nonlinear discrete-time (DT) systems, where the control input dynamics are known. Multi-layer critic and actor neural networks (MNNs) are utilized for online estimation of the infinite horizon value function and optimal control input. The NN weights are tuned online using a direct temporal difference error (TDE)-driven learning approach, which modifies the singular values of the gradient with respect to the NN weights to accelerate their convergence. The critic NN uses a novel experience replay technique to improve sample efficiency without introducing biased TDEs and guarantee the …

Multi-Model Safe Neuro-Optimal Output Tracking Control Of Autonomous Surface Vessels With Explainable Ai, Behzad Farzanegan, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a safety-aware deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based trajectory tracking control of autonomous surface vessels (ASVs). A multilayer neural network (MNN) observer estimates the ASV's state and uncertain dynamics. By utilizing the estimate state vector from the observer, a safety-aware DRL-based optimal policy is formulated using control barrier function (CBF) and Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. An actor-critic MNN with singular value decomposition (SVD)-based update mitigates vanishing gradients. To enhance adaptability, an online safe lifelong learning (SLL) scheme counters catastrophic forgetting across varying ASV dynamics. The Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) method identifies key features influencing the control policy. Simulations on an …

Online Adaptive Optimal Tracking Control Of Uncertain Strict Feedback Discrete-Time Systems With Hardware Verification Using A Quadrotor Uav, Maxwell Geiger, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This article considers the infinite time horizon optimal tracking control problem for discrete time (DT) partially uncertain strict feedback systems with application to quadrotor UAVs. First, the strict feedback DT system is transformed into an equivalent affine nonlinear DT system in terms of tracking error dynamics. The optimal tracking control problem is solved using an augmented system approach, where a horizon of future reference trajectory points are used in the augmented state, as compared to using a single point. The internal dynamics of the original nonlinear strict feedback system and the transformed affine system in terms of error dynamics are …

Reinforcement Learning-Based Nonlinear Optimal Discrete-Time Control Of Power Systems, Vijay Kumar Singh, Behzad Farzanegan, S. Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents a partially model-free adaptive optimal tracking control method for power systems, specifically targeting a synchronous generator connected through a reactive transmission line. By integrating the tracking error dynamics with reference trajectory dynamics, an augmented system is created. A discounted performance function is introduced to address the nonlinear tracking problem optimally. Unlike traditional methods that compute feedforward and feedback terms separately, the proposed approach calculates both simultaneously by minimizing the discounted performance function. The discrete-time tracking Bellman and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations are derived, and a reinforcement learning (RL)-based technique is employed to solve the optimal policy online without …

Communication plays a role in multi-UAV to perform formation tracking missions. In complex environments, UAV communication is often subject to jamming attacks, affecting the formation process. Therefore, studying the formation tracking control problem in jamming attacks is of great significance. Typically, the actions of the UAV consist of two fundamental modules: mobility strategy and communication strategy. In this paper, we design an anti-jamming attack mixed strategy for formation tracking control of the multi-UAV system. In practical scenarios, multi-UAV systems not only require the accomplishment of formation maneuvers but also necessitate effective mitigation of jamming attacks caused by other UAVs. Therefore, …

This paper presents a unified framework for the safe and optimal control of heterogeneous quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles (QUAVs) in formation, enabling multitask missions without requiring precise system dynamics. To address partial state observability, a multilayer neural network (MNN) observer is designed to estimate unmeasured states. Reinforcement learning (RL) is employed for optimal control utilizing an MNN ensuring adaptability. Barrier Lyapunov Functions (BLFs) are integrated into the RL framework to enforce safety by maintaining QUAVs within predefined constraints. An enhanced continual learning (ECL) method is proposed to improve the adaptability of MNNs. This method enables effective multitask learning while mitigating …

Infrared imaging has emerged as a robust solution for urban object detection under low-light and adverse weather conditions, offering significant advantages over traditional visible-light cameras. However, challenges such as class imbalance, thermal noise, and computational constraints can significantly hinder model performance in practical settings. To address these issues, we evaluate multiple YOLO variants on the FLIR ADAS V2 dataset, ultimately selecting YOLOv8 as our baseline due to its balanced accuracy and efficiency. Building on this foundation, we present MS-YOLO (MobileNetv4 and SlideLoss based on YOLO), which replaces YOLOv8's CSPDarknet backbone with the more efficient MobileNetV4, reducing computational overhead by 1.5% …

Revealing Spatiotemporal Neural Activation Patterns In Electrocorticography Recordings Of Human Speech Production By Mutual Information, Julio Kovacs, Dean Krusienski, Minu Maninder, Willy Wriggers
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Background
Spatiotemporal mapping of neural activity during continuous speech production has been traditionally approached using correlation coefficient (CC) analysis between cortical signals and speech recordings. A prior study employed this approach using electrocorticography (ECoG) data from participants who underwent invasive intracranial monitoring for epilepsy. However, CC cannot detect nonlinear relationships and is dominated by the correspondence between periods of silence and of non-silence.
New Method
We introduce the mutual information (MI) measure, which can capture both linear and nonlinear dependencies. We validated CC and MI on the sub-second spatiotemporal brain activity recorded during continuous speech tasks. To refine the results, …

An Analytical Model Of Motion Artifacts In A Measured Arterial Pulse Signal—Part Ii: Tactile Sensors, Md Mahfuzur Rahman, Subodh Toraskar, Mamun Hasan, Zhili Hao
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper, the second of two parts, presents an analytical model of motion artifacts (MA) in measured pulse signals by a tactile sensor, which contains a deformable microstructure sitting on a substrate. While the tissue-contact-sensor (TCS) stack and the sensor are both treated as a 1DOF (degree-of-freedom) system, tissue–sensor contact joins their mass together to form a 1DOF system with springs and dampers on both sides. MA on the sensor substrate causes baseline drift and time-varying system parameters (TVSP) of the TCS stack simultaneously. An analytical model is developed to mathematically relate baseline drift and TVSP to a measured pulse …

Mass-Adaptive Admittance Control For Robotic Manipulators, Hossein Gholampour, Jonathon E. Slightam, Logan E. Beaver
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
Handling objects with unknown or changing masses is a common challenge in robotics, often leading to errors or instability if the control system cannot adapt in realtime. In this paper, we present a novel approach that enables a six-degrees-of-freedom robotic manipulator to reliably follow waypoints while automatically estimating and compensating for unknown payload weight. Our method integrates an admittance control framework with a mass estimator, allowing the robot to dynamically update an excitation force to compensate for the payload mass. This strategy mitigates end-effector sagging and preserves stability when handling objects of unknown weights. We experimentally validated our approach in …

Autonomous robotic manipulation in unstructured environments faces many challenges and is hindered by capabilities that bridge the gap between perception and acting on the world. Action plans that are centric to object motion rather than end-of-arm tooling behavior may aid this. This paper presents an autonomous action planner for a feedback linearizeable system comprised of three base motions that can be leveraged on their own or in combination to give custom motion plans. The optimization routine for the three different types of motion are presented, which are integrated into physics informed neural networks. A component of this is the autonomy …

Current influenza trends, including the severity of the 2025 flu season and the prevalence of H5 bird flu in livestock, necessitate efforts to better understand how to educate students about its transmission. Although validated assessments of influenza knowledge exist, these have not been evaluated for affective and demographic biases. We explore differential item functioning (DIF) effects in four items focused on specific aspects of flu transmission derived from a validated influenza knowledge assessment. In doing so, we introduce and utilize a machine learning framework for exploration of DIF which offers greater flexibility than traditional statistical approaches in terms of studying …

Automated Infinite Combos Detection System For Collectible Card Game, Amornpong Trakarnkulphun
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In Collectible Card Games, resources management is one of the most effective strategy. However, there are some combinations of cards which produce unlimited resources called infinite combos. Too-cheap infinite combos that can be played early in the game break game environment, because the player who executes the combo immediately wins. To solve the problem, game designers usually restrict a part of the combos from being played. Due to the large number of cards in the card pool, it is difficult to search for these combos and solve this problem before a release date of a card set. This research aims …

Assessing travel-related Quality of Life (QoL) is a significant challenge due to its reliance on subjective human perception, which is difficult to measure. Traditional studies are often constrained by the limited scope of costly, manual data collection. The significant contribution of this research is the introduction of a new framework that can analyze tourist perception on a large and systematic scale. The novelty of this work lies in the utilization of Google Street View (GSV) as a large-scale visual data source, coupled with the use of a sequence-based model to analyze travel routes, which allows for the simulation of the …
Out-Of-Domain Tuberculosis Detection From Chest X-Ray Images Using Meta Learning With Soft Labels, Kanokphat Jinanarong
Out-Of-Domain Tuberculosis Detection From Chest X-Ray Images Using Meta Learning With Soft Labels, Kanokphat Jinanarong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Automated tuberculosis screening from chest x-ray images could greatly benefit regions with limited medical resources. However, currently available methods could not handle this problem well due to the difference in chest x-ray images in each region caused by the difference in machine and demographics, the possible noise in the available labels, and other reasons. We therefore propose a new machine learning algorithm that could detect tuberculosis with great accuracy on any other data sources by learning from completely different data sources. We used a model-agnostic meta-learning together with a soft label approach, utilizing the meta-gradient to dynamically adjust the soft …

Endoplanar: Deformable Planar-Based Gaussian Splatting For Surgical Scene Reconstruction, Thatphum Paonim
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Precise modeling of deformable anatomical structures from stereoscopic endoscopic footage plays a critical role in advancing surgical guidance and robotic automation within image-assisted medical procedures. Recent advances in Gaussian splatting have demonstrated real-time visualization capabilities with notable quality on endoscopic data; however, traditional 3D Gaussian representations introduce volumetric artifacts that compromise geometric fidelity and depth accuracy. We address these challenges through EndoPlanar, a deformable planar Gaussian framework that projects volumetric primitives onto planar surfaces. This planar formulation facilitates bias-free depth calculation and normal vector derivation—capabilities that remain elusive with standard ellipsoidal representations. We further incorporate a regularization mechanism to ensure …
Advancing Voice Spoofing Detection In Thai : A Comprehensive Dataset And Performance Analysis On Speaking Styles And Channel Effects, Ticho Urai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Voice authentication is increasingly used in applications such as banking and call center verification, but it faces serious risks from spoofed voices. Recent advances in text-to-speech (TTS) and voice cloning make it possible to generate highly natural fake speech, creating an urgent need for robust anti-spoofing systems. While most prior work focuses on English, little research addresses the Thai language. To fill this gap, we present the Chula Spoofed Speech (CSS) dataset, a large-scale Thai corpus containing 1.3M utterances of both bona fide and synthetic speech. The synthetic samples are generated using five state-of-the-art TTS systems from the same utterances …
