Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama
Human-Computer Interaction Research And Education--Crossing Boundaries Between Academic Research And Industry Practices, Yasushi Akiyama
Interface: The C3 Lab Knowledge Commons
In this paper, I will discuss my own experience and approaches to enhancing students' learning in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) classes by adopting an interdisciplinary approach that integrates academic research and industry practice. Due to the inherent interdisciplinarity of HCI, and to foster a set of "soft" skills known in Interdisciplinary Studies as the "cognitive toolkit," I invite expertise from the other departments at my university as well as industry professionals to give lectures, facilitate workshops, and oversee projects. These collaborations have produced several insights and have had a positive impact on the participants.

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Having students write short self-reflections at the end of each weekly session enables them to reflect on what they have learnt in the session and topics they find challenging. Analysing these self-reflections provides instructors with insights on how to address the missing conceptions and misconceptions of the students and appropriately plan and deliver the next session. Currently, manual methods adopted to analyse these student reflections are time consuming and tedious. This paper proposes a solution model that uses content mining and NLP techniques to automate the analysis of short self-reflections. We evaluate the solution model by studying its implementation in …

Teaching Coding In A Virtual Environment: Overcoming Challenges, Marion S. Smith
Teaching Coding In A Virtual Environment: Overcoming Challenges, Marion S. Smith
Southwestern Business Administration Journal
Educational research suggests that teaching techniques are subject matter specific. Teaching techniques in introductory programming classes are centered around two approaches used by students in learning. One approach is where students develop a thorough understanding of what they are learning. This is referred to as “deep learning”. Other students use a “surface approach” where they perform the tasks required from them. The persona of the instructor and the choice of instructional materials used within a class determines which approach the student will adopt. Active teaching techniques fosters “deep learning”. With the need to adapt active teaching techniques to a virtual …

As technology advances and hardware as well as user expectations becomes more advanced, software systems must change alongside or go obsolete. When software is no longer developed, decisions must be made regarding its future. Through various methods, legacy software may continue to see usage far past its obsolescence, however legacy software will sooner or later face replacement by new applications, built for state-of-the-art machines, to comply with modern requirements. When writing new software to replace older programs, the added challenge for developers is to help the client also modernize their workflow. When a program has been in long time use …
Shall We Ignore All Intermediate Grades?, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Shall We Ignore All Intermediate Grades?, Christian Servin, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In most European universities, the overall student's grade for a course is determined exclusively by this student's performance on the final exam. All intermediate grades -- on homework, quizzes, and previous texts -- are, in effect, ignored. This arrangement helps gauge the student's performance by the knowledge that the student shows at the end of the course. The main drawback of this approach is that some students do not start studying until later, thinking that they can catch up and even get an excellent grade -- and this hurts their performance. To motivate students to study hard throughout the semester, …

How To Teach Advanced Highly Motivated Students: Teaching Strategy Of Iosif Yakovlevich Verebeichik, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The paper describes and explains the teaching strategy of Iosif Yakovlevich Verebeichik, a successful mathematics teacher at special mathematical high schools -- schools for students interested in and skilled in mathematics. The resulting strategy seems counterintuitive and contrary to all the pedagogical advice. Our explanation is not complete: it worked well for this teacher, but others who tried to follow seemingly the same strategy did not succeed. How he made it work, how can others make it work -- this is still not clear. In the words of Verebeichik himself, while mathematics itself is a science, teaching mathematics is an …
