Digitizing Delphi: Educating Audiences Through Virtual Reconstruction, Kate Koury Jan 2024

Digitizing Delphi: Educating Audiences Through Virtual Reconstruction, Kate Koury

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Implementing a 3D model into a virtual space allows the general public to engage critically with archaeological processes. There are many unseen decisions that go into reconstructing an ancient temple. Analysis of available materials and techniques, predictions of how objects were used, decisions of what sources to reference, puzzle piecing broken remains together, and even educated guesses used to fill gaps in information often go unobserved by the public. This work will educate users about those choices by allowing the side-by-side comparison of conflicting theories on the reconstruction of the Tholos at Delphi, which is an ideal site because of …

Computer Science Faculty Work

Background and Context: With the growing movement to adopt critical framings of computing, scholars have worked to reframe computing education from the narrow development of programming skills to skills in identifying and resisting oppressive structures in computing. However, we have little guidance on how these framings may manifest in classroom practice. Objectives: To better understand the processes and practice of critical pedagogy in a computing classrooms, we taught a critically conscious computing elective within a summer academic program at a northwest United States university targeted at secondary students (ages 14–18) from low-income backgrounds and would be the first …

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

This chapter describes the use of ChatGPT in a graduate class assignment and explores how Al can scaffold student work to promote successively higher levels of thinking. The assignment asked students to compose a "stacked evaluation" of school district technology plans, which included a rubric generated by ChatGPT, evaluation data generated by ChatGPT using the rubric criteria, and the students' evaluation of both the technology plan and of the ChatGPT evaluation. Student deliverables were more thorough than in previous semesters and included clear demarcation of Al-generated text and original writing. Because students asked ChatGPT to act in the persona of …

7. Automated Aid Or Offloading Close Reading? Student Perspectives Of Ai Reading Assistants, Marc Watkins

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

Generative Al technologies offer new opportunities for enhancing student learning that go beyond chatbot interfaces like ChatGPT. This chapter presents reflections from a small study about the possible benefits and challenges posed by integrating Al-powered reading assistants in first-year writing courses. Careful integration of these tools suggests potential benefits that do not simply generate text on students' behalf. For example, reading assistants like Explainpaper and SciSpace are powered by large language models like OpenAl's GPT and can help students augment reading. This application of generative technology could aid non-native speakers, students with disabilities, and those struggling with reading comprehension. However, …

6. More Is Less?: Using Generative Ai For Idea Generation And Diversification In Early Writing Processes, Franziska Tsufim, Lainie Pomerleau Jan 2024

6. More Is Less?: Using Generative Ai For Idea Generation And Diversification In Early Writing Processes, Franziska Tsufim, Lainie Pomerleau

Teaching and Generative AI: Pedagogical Possibilities and Productive Tensions

As writing teachers, we are strong proponents of process writing. At the same time, we are aware that early process work, especially in a group setting, can be time consuming and anxiety-inducing. Students may also self-censor when sharing work with peers especially if they are not confident in their ideas. Drawing on the process of nominal, electronic brainstorming, we created two different prompts that allowed students to incorporate generative Al into their idea generation process. This first activity improves the efficiency of individual idea generation, while the second exercise helps increase student confidence in their ideas in collaborative brainstorming situations. …

Student Attitudes And Intentions To Use Continuous Authentication Methods Applied To Mitigate Impersonation Attacks During E-Assessments, Andrea E. Green Jan 2024

Student Attitudes And Intentions To Use Continuous Authentication Methods Applied To Mitigate Impersonation Attacks During E-Assessments, Andrea E. Green

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

No solution can ultimately eliminate cheating in online courses. However, universities reserve funding for authentication systems to minimize the threat of cheating in online courses. Most higher education institutions use a combination of authentication methods to secure systems against impersonation attacks during online examinations. Authentication technologies ensure that an online course is protected from impersonation attacks. However, it is important that authentication methods secure systems against impersonation attacks with minimal disruption during an examination. Authentication methods applied to secure e-assessments against impersonation attacks may impact a student’s attitude and intentions to use the e-examination system.

In this regard, the research …

Development Of The Passphrase Alleviating Abstraction, Remembering, And Strength (Palabras) Method, Juan Manuel Madrid Jan 2024

Development Of The Passphrase Alleviating Abstraction, Remembering, And Strength (Palabras) Method, Juan Manuel Madrid

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The currently most used method for computer authentication is the password because it is simple to implement, and users are familiar with it. However, passwords are vulnerable to attacks that can be mitigated by increasing the complexity of the chosen password, particularly in length. One possible approach to increasing the complexity of passwords is by using passphrases. Passphrases can be easier to remember than a standard password, improving memorability. They can reduce the loss of work time and productivity related to forgotten passwords. To achieve the required balance between complexity and memorability, the concept of passphrase categories can be applied, …
