Content Aware Request Distribution For High Performance Web Service: A Performance Study, Robert M. Jones Jul 2002

Content Aware Request Distribution For High Performance Web Service: A Performance Study, Robert M. Jones

Dissertations and Theses

The World Wide Web is becoming a basic infrastructure for a variety of services, and the increases in audience size and client network bandwidth create service demands that are outpacing server capacity. Web clusters are one solution to this need for high performance, highly available web server systems. We are interested in load distribution techniques, specifically Layer-7 algorithms that are content-aware. Layer-7 algorithms allow distribution control based on the specific content requested, which is advantageous for a system that offers highly heterogenous services. We examine the performance of the Client Aware Policy (CAP) on a Linux/Apache web cluster consisting of …

Provisioning On-Line Games: A Traffic Analysis Of A Busy Counter-Strike Server, Wu-Chang Feng, Francis Chang, Wu-Chi Feng, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper describes the results of a 500 million packet trace of a popular on-line, multi-player, game server. The results show that the traffic behavior of this heavily loaded game server is highly predictable and can be attributed to the fact that current game designs target the saturation of the narrowest, last-mile link. Specifically, in order to maximize the interactivity of the game itself and to provide relatively uniform experiences between players playing over different network speeds, on-line games typically fix their usage requirements in such a way as to saturate the network link of their lowest speed players. While …

Supporting Low-Latency Tcp-Based Media Streams, Ashvin Goel, Charles Krasic, Kang Li, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The dominance of the TCP protocol on the Internet and its success in maintaining Internet stability has led to several TCP-based stored media-streaming approaches. The success of these approaches raises the question whether TCP can be used for low-latency streaming. Low latency streaming allows responsive control operations for media streaming and can make interactive applications feasible. We examined adapting the TCP send buffer size based on TCP's congestion window to reduce application perceived network latency. Our results show that this simple idea significantly improves the number of packets that can be delivered within 200 ms and 500 ms thresholds.

Proteome Database Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma., Cynthia Liang, Jason Neo, Siaw Ling Lo, Gek San Tan, Teck Keong Seow, Maxey Chung May 2002

Proteome Database Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma., Cynthia Liang, Jason Neo, Siaw Ling Lo, Gek San Tan, Teck Keong Seow, Maxey Chung

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC or hepatoma) is the most common primary cancer of the liver. Persistent viral infection by the hepatic B or C virus is probably the most important cause of HCC worldwide. It is responsible for approximately one million deaths each year, predominantly in the underdeveloped and developing countries, but its incidence is also on the rise in the developed countries. For most patients suffering from HCC, long-term survival is rare, as they are presented late and are often unsuitable for curative treatment. Thus there is great interest to identify novel HCC diagnostic markers for early detection of the …

Infopipes: An Abstraction For Multimedia Streaming, Andrew P. Black, Huang Jie, Rainer Koster, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Apr 2002

Infopipes: An Abstraction For Multimedia Streaming, Andrew P. Black, Huang Jie, Rainer Koster, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow – Infopipes. Infopipes make information flow primary, not an auxiliary mechanism that is hidden away. Systems are built by connecting predefined component Infopipes such as sources, sinks, buffers, filters, broadcasting pipes, and multiplexing pipes. The goal of Infopipes is not to hide communication, like an RPC system, but to reify it: to represent communication explicitly as objects that the program can interrogate and manipulate. Moreover, these objects represent communication in application-level terms, not in terms of network or process implementation.

A simulation of the object model using MODSIM III was developed and Prototype Verification System (PVS) was used to show the applicability of the object model to formal methods by formally specifying and verifying a Global Systems for Mobile communications (GSM) protocol. This application has proved to be successful in two aspects. The first …

Robust Face Representation And Recognition Under Low Resolution And Difficult Lighting Conditions, Mohammad Moinul Islam Apr 2002

Robust Face Representation And Recognition Under Low Resolution And Difficult Lighting Conditions, Mohammad Moinul Islam

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on different aspects of face image analysis for accurate face recognition under low resolution and poor lighting conditions. A novel resolution enhancement technique is proposed for enhancing a low resolution face image into a high resolution image for better visualization and improved feature extraction, especially in a video surveillance environment. This method performs kernel regression and component feature learning in local neighborhood of the face images. It uses directional Fourier phase feature component to adaptively lean the regression kernel based on local covariance to estimate the high resolution image. For each patch in the neighborhood, four directional …

Traffic Simulation Using Arena, Shanti Yelamanchi Apr 2002

Traffic Simulation Using Arena, Shanti Yelamanchi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Many traffic simulation tools exist for developing traffic simulations; these tools can be divided broadly into two categories — macro simulation tools and micro simulation tools. These two categories of simulation tools are directed at modeling the extremes of traffic systems: very large systems and very small systems. There is a class of intermediate-sized transportation networks for which neither category of simulation tools might perform adequately. Additionally these specialized traffic simulation tools have a high learning curve. For developing medium sized traffic simulations in a short period of time, one might choose to use a familiar general-purpose discrete event simulation …

Embedded Software Programming To Develop A Command Line User Interface For Monitoring And Debugging A Manually Driven Gas Regulator Control System, Syed N. Hyder Apr 2002

Embedded Software Programming To Develop A Command Line User Interface For Monitoring And Debugging A Manually Driven Gas Regulator Control System, Syed N. Hyder

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents a complete embedded programming model and software codes for a command-line user interface for CONCOA's gas regulator control system. Control Corporation of America (CONCOA) manufactures high-pressure gas regulators, which mechanically control the pressure at their outlets. Since the control system is based on mechanical regulators, adding or stopping gas flow from the system can cause manifold fluctuation that could further cause the pressure to rise or fall with time. The main motivation for developing a command line user interface is to provide a centralized computer control to monitor and debug the gas regulator control system electronically by …

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen Jan 2002

Cxquery: A Novel Xml Query Language, Peter Revesz, Yi Chen

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

XML is becoming the data exchange standard on the Internet. Previously proposed XML query languages, such as XQuery, Quilt, YALT, Lorel, and XML-QL, lack schema definition of the query result; therefore, they are limited for defining views, integrating data, updating, and further querying, all of which are often needed in e-Business applications. We propose a novel XML query language called CXQuery, which defines the schema of the query results explicitly and can easily define views, and integrate, update, and query XML data. In addition, CXQuery can express spatial and spatio-temporal queries using a constraint-based querying approach.

An Analysis Of A Private-Key Cryptosystem, Wei-Wey Tan Jan 2002

An Analysis Of A Private-Key Cryptosystem, Wei-Wey Tan

Student Works (2000-2009)

In this dissertation, we have presented a new block cipher. The proposed block cipher is a Substitution-Permutation network cryptosystem with a block length of 128 bits and key length of 256 bits. With the increased key length and block size, the proposed block cipher has greater security over DES. A modular design approach was applied. The cipher has three major building blocks and their interaction has been carefully chosen to achieve better security and performance. Algorithmic S-Boxes are used to provide confusion and nonlinearity in the cipher. The proposed cipher uses a highly diffusive diffusion layer, which is a combination …

A Genetic Algorithm Solution To The Shortest Path Problem In Ospf And Mpls, Wee Jing Tee Wee Jing Jan 2002

A Genetic Algorithm Solution To The Shortest Path Problem In Ospf And Mpls, Wee Jing Tee Wee Jing

Student Works (2000-2009)

This project studies and explores the potential of using genetic algorithm to solve the shortest path problem in Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). The most critical task for developing a genetic algorithm to the shortest path problem is to how to encode a path in a network. In this project, two genetic algorithm solutions arc developed for the above two problem domains, i.e. Previous-node-based Encoding to solve the shortest path problem in OSPF and Priority-based Encoding to solve the shortest path problem in MPLS. For each of the shortest path problem domains, the proposed solution …

Internet Information Server Scanner : Scanning On Url Vulnerabilities, Yu Jin Tan Jan 2002

Internet Information Server Scanner : Scanning On Url Vulnerabilities, Yu Jin Tan

Student Works (2000-2009)

This dissertation analyzes weaknesses on web servers, focusing on Microsoft's Internet Information Server (HS). As part of the research, an HS scanner (HS-SCAN) has been implemented to probe only on URL vulnerabilities. The need for a vulnerability scanner stems from the alarming number of successful attacks on computer systems that are connected to the Internet. The security flaws threatening e-businesses and the Internet community has prompted bona fide defense measures. Internet firewalls - gateways controlling access between one network and all the others - became a must-have for any organization connecting to the Net. If the firewall is considered the …

Sar Simulations In Wireless Communication And Safety Discussions In The Society, M. O. Özyalçin, Funda Akleman, Levent Sevgi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Numerical simulation in cellular phone - human tissue interaction is discussed in this paper. The powerful time domain (TD) techniques, the transmission line matrix (TLM) and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods, are used to model mutual effects. The purpose is to calculate specific absorption rate (SAR; defined as the power absorbed by the unit mass of the tissue), validate the codes and verify the results. Also, effectiveness of the SAR parameter in determination of the exposure limits for human health and environmental pollution is discussed.

Definability, Canonical Models, And Compactness For Finitary Coalgebraic Modal Logic, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson Jan 2002

Definability, Canonical Models, And Compactness For Finitary Coalgebraic Modal Logic, Alexander Kurz, Dirk Pattinson

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

This paper studies coalgebras from the perspective of the finitary observations that can be made of their behaviours. Based on the terminal sequence, notions of finitary behaviours and finitary predicates are introduced. A category Behω(T) of coalgebras with morphisms preserving finitary behaviours is defined. We then investigate definability and compactness for finitary coalgebraic modal logic, show that the final object in Behω(T) generalises the notion of a canonical model in modal logic, and study the topology induced on a coalgebra by the finitary part of the terminal sequence.

A Note On The Poisson Summation Formula And Its Application To Electromagnetic Problems Involving Cylindrical Coordinates, Anastassios H. Panaretos, Hristos T. Anastassiu, Dimitra I. Kaklamani Jan 2002

A Note On The Poisson Summation Formula And Its Application To Electromagnetic Problems Involving Cylindrical Coordinates, Anastassios H. Panaretos, Hristos T. Anastassiu, Dimitra I. Kaklamani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A modified version of the Poisson Summation Formula is derived, involving the Fourier-Bessel Transform of the kernel function, as opposed to the conventional Fourier Transform engaged in the standard formula. This novel form can be applied to problems employing cylindrical coordinates, such as the fast evaluation of the dyadic Green's function in a waveguide or cavity of circular cross-section.

A Time Domain Uniform Geometrical Theory Of Slope Diffraction For A Curved Wedge, Prabhakar H. Pathak, Paul R. Rousseau Jan 2002

A Time Domain Uniform Geometrical Theory Of Slope Diffraction For A Curved Wedge, Prabhakar H. Pathak, Paul R. Rousseau

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A time domain version of the uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (TD-UTD) is developed to describe, in essentially closed form, the field which is produced via slope diffraction at a perfectly conducting, arbitrarily curved wedge excited by a time impulsive wave that exhibits a rapid spatial variation near the edge of the wedge. This TD-UTD slope diffracted field for a curved wedge is obtained by a Fourier inversion of the corresponding frequency domain UTD expression. An analytical signal representation of the transient fields is used since it is convenient, and because it circumvents some of the difficulties, which especially arise …

Thread Transparency In Information Flow Middleware, Rainer Koster, Andrew P. Black, Jie Huang, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Jan 2002

Thread Transparency In Information Flow Middleware, Rainer Koster, Andrew P. Black, Jie Huang, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Existing middleware is based on control-flow centric interaction models such as remote method invocations, poorly matching the structure of applications that process continuous information flows. Difficulties cultiesin building this kind of application on conventional platforms include flow-specific concurrency and timing requirements, necessitating explicit management of threads, synchronization, and timing by the application programmer. We propose Infopipes as a high-level abstraction for information flows, and we are developing a middleware framework that supports this abstraction. Infopipes transparently handle complexities associated with control flow and multi-threading. From high-level configuration descriptions the platform determines what parts of a pipeline require separate threads or …

New Oscillator Topologies Using Inverting Second-Generation Current Conveyors, Ali̇ Toker, Hakan Kuntman, Oğüzhan Çi̇çekoğlu, Mehmet Di̇şçi̇gi̇l

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this work, new oscillator topologies based on a recently introduced active element, namely inverting second-generation current conveyor, are presented. This recently introduced unity gain based active element is suitable for integrated circuit realization and can easily be implemented with CMOS technology. Considering this fact, basic oscillator topologies employing a single, two and three conveyors are proposed. Several oscillator circuits based on these topologies are obtained. Expressions for oscillation conditions and frequencies are derived both for ideal and non-ideal cases. Some of them are single frequency and the others are variable frequency oscillators. The oscillators employing two and three active …
