From Static Prediction To Mindful Machines: A Paradigm Shift In Distributed Ai Systems, Rao Mikkilineni, W. Patrick Kelly
Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship
A special class of complex adaptive systems—biological and social—thrive not by passively accumulating patterns, but by engineering coherence, i.e., the deliberate alignment of prior knowledge, real-time updates, and teleonomic purposes. By contrast, today’s AI stacks—Large Language Models (LLMs) wrapped in agentic toolchains—remain rooted in a Turing-paradigm architecture: statistical world models (opaque weights) bolted onto brittle, imperative workflows. They excel at pattern completion, but they externalize governance, memory, and purpose, thereby accumulating coherence debt—a structural fragility manifested as hallucinations, shallow and siloed memory, ad hoc guardrails, and costly human oversight. The shortcoming of current AI relative to human-like intelligence is therefore …
Cross-Modal Prompting For Multi-Class Visual Anomaly Localization, Duncan F. Mccain
Cross-Modal Prompting For Multi-Class Visual Anomaly Localization, Duncan F. Mccain
All Theses
Visual anomaly detection is a technology that uses computer vision to automatically identify defects or irregularities in images, such as cracks, scratches, or discolorations on manufactured products. Unsupervised visual anomaly detection does this without needing examples of those defects during the training process. This "unsupervised" approach is crucial in industries like manufacturing, automotive, electronics, and pharmaceuticals, where ensuring product quality is essential for safety, reliability, and cost efficiency. For instance, it helps spot flaws in circuit boards, fabrics, or medical pills during production lines, preventing faulty items from reaching consumers. By reducing manual inspections, it saves time and resources, benefiting …
Understanding Bias And Fairness In Large Language Models: An Empirical Study, Joshua Johnson
Understanding Bias And Fairness In Large Language Models: An Empirical Study, Joshua Johnson
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis investigates demographic bias in large language models (LLMs) through the use of evaluating outcome disparities when utilized in decision making tasks as well as underlying associations that could contribute to furthering these disparities. Using profiles from the Adult dataset, we analyze how Gemini 2.0 Flash performs in an income prediction task using zero-shot and few-shot prompting methods. Our findings show that models exhibit measurable differences in demographic parity and false positive rates, with the use of few-shot prompting reducing these disparities. Alongside this line of testing, we tested associational bias in Qwen 2.5 using probability based association tests …
Adaptive Deep Learning In Physical Layer Applications, Ali Owfi
Adaptive Deep Learning In Physical Layer Applications, Ali Owfi
All Dissertations
Traditionally, signal processing models in communication systems have been designed based on solid foundations in statistics and information theory, often assuming linearity and optimizing for simplified models. However, real-world communication systems exhibit numerous imperfections and non-linearities that traditional linear models struggle to capture accurately. Deep Learning (DL)-based approaches, unconstrained by rigid mathematical models, have shown promise in optimizing system performance by accommodating specific hardware configurations and dynamic channel conditions as an alternative to the traditional methods. Despite all the recent research efforts on DL-based methods for physical layer applications, DL models have still not been widely applied to physical layer …
Privacy Preserving-Based Artificial Intelligence For Precision Agriculture, Partha P. Sengupta
Privacy Preserving-Based Artificial Intelligence For Precision Agriculture, Partha P. Sengupta
Dissertations
The research work finds a solution to precision agriculture of cotton cultivation using artificial intelligence (AI) models. Two sets of model performance based on the application are selected namely a low resource and a high resource setting. This is because using drone surveys to capture images identifying the classes of stressed and unstressed cotton plantation requires limited model architecture and CPU based computation. Thus, traditional AI models were selected for low resource settings. Again, for high computation intensive models like transfer learning-convolution neural network (CNN) based architectures were grouped into high resource settings. There was another issue of class imbalance …
An Analysis Of Neuroidal Memory Formation Within D. Melanogaster, Jerry Chang
An Analysis Of Neuroidal Memory Formation Within D. Melanogaster, Jerry Chang
Master's Theses
The Neuroidal model poses a neurobiologically plausible theory for modeling the brain. This symbolic network has been shown to capture realistic memorization behaviors using the JOIN algorithm. The model has also been recently improved by incorporating Watts-Strogatz small-worlds within its base structure. From the efforts of neuroscience researchers, we have access to the Drosophila melanogaster (D. melanogaster) fruit fly’s connectome, which has been found to also contain small-worlds in this thesis. By synthesizing the Ocellar Ganglion (OCG) region of Drosophila, we compare a digitized version of a real-world brain with an instance of the Neuroidal model. In this thesis, we …

Sciteuq: Toward Uncertainty-Aware Complex Scientific Table Data Extraction And Understanding, Kehinde Ajayi
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Scientific tables report critical research insights, data, and findings for scientific progress. Because Portable Document Format (PDF) is the de facto standard format for scientific paper publishing, there has been an emerging need for an automatic method to extract data from PDF files. A significant fraction of scientific tables exhibit complex structure and content, making it challenging for machine learning tools to accurately extract the content directly from PDF files. Despite the advancements in Table Structure Recognition (TSR), automated extraction of data from complex scientific tables remains a challenge due to variations in table structures and contents. In this dissertation, …

The connection between these domains lies in graph theory. This research demonstrates that …
Synthetic Dataset For Understanding Negation In Text-Guided Image Editing, Nhat-Tan Bui
Synthetic Dataset For Understanding Negation In Text-Guided Image Editing, Nhat-Tan Bui
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Negation is a fundamental linguistic concept used by humans to convey information that they do not desire. Despite this, minimal research has focused on negation within text-guided image editing. This lack of research means that vision-language models (VLMs) for image editing may struggle to understand negation, implying that they struggle to provide accurate results. One barrier to achieving human-level intelligence is the lack of a standard collection by which research into negation can be evaluated. This thesis presents the first large-scale dataset, Negative Instruction (NeIn), for studying negation within instruction-based image editing. Our dataset comprises 366,957 quintuplets, i.e., source image, …

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Farmers face the critical challenge of monitoring cattle well-being for both ethical and economic success, relying on signals like body temperature and facial expressions to assess their animals' health. However, these indicators have traditionally relied on human observation with manual measurement, which is time-consuming and subjective. Despite this clear need, no automated system currently exists for monitoring cattle body temperature, and available datasets remain limited in scope. To address these challenges, we make two key contributions: (i) We introduce CattleFace-RGBT, a novel RGB-Thermal (RGB-T) Cattle Facial Landmark dataset consisting of 2,300 paired RGB and thermal images (4,600 images in total), …

State-of-the-art machine and deep learning models generally perform well on previously seen data, albeit with wrong close world assumption that all real-world data are from previously seen train and validation samples, hence there poor performance when exposed to data which deviates from previously seen training and validation set. This is clearly evident in the domain of cybersecurity where the world continues to experience several high profile malware attacks despite advancement in state-of-the-art research. The reason being that the constant evolvement of innovation in the development of tools and method deployed to carry out various attacks had given hackers and other …

Hubert-Based Models And Evaluation Strategies For Pragmatically-Faithful Speech To Speech Translation, Javier Vazquez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Pragmatic fidelity in speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) has largely been understudied, leading to communication tools inadequate to support non-superficial dialog. We aim to improve pragmatic faithfulness in English-Spanish translation through the development of machine learning models that are able to predict a corresponding pragmatic representation in the other language. To evaluate performance, we developed a pipeline that utilizes a recently-developed pragmatic similarity evaluation metric to compare models. Further, we developed models that exploit HuBERT features as these have been found suitable for various prosody and pragmatics related tasks. Our models outperformed human and state-of-the-art predictions, albeit the methodology being limited to …
Curvilinear Image Segmentation Using Multiscale Variational U-Net, Rebekah Fortes
Curvilinear Image Segmentation Using Multiscale Variational U-Net, Rebekah Fortes
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Segmentation of curvilinear structures such as water contours, cracks in cement, and vascular networks in biomedical imaging, poses unique challenges due to extreme class imbalance, irregular morphology, low contrast against complex backgrounds, and the need to preserve global connectivity while detecting fine-scale details. We propose a Multiscale Variational U-Net (MSVU-Net) architecture designed specifically to address these challenges. The model integrates multiscale convolutional filters to capture both global context and local detail, while embedding a variational model in the bottleneck layer to enhance structural representation. To mitigate class imbalance and improve fidelity, the network optimizes a hybrid loss function that combines …

Marsanywhere: Dataset And Cross-View Diffusion Model For Satellite-To-Ground View Synthesis With Mars Data, Benjamin T. Hinchliff
Master's Theses
Satellite-to-ground view synthesis aims to create a realistic ground view image from a corresponding satellite view image. This is a well-studied problem for street level imagery, with good results being achieved by using modern image synthesis techniques such as diffusion models. However, despite the public availability of satellite and ground level imagery on Mars, these techniques have yet to be applied to the domain due to difficulties in collating and processing the data into a usable form. We address this deficiency by creating a dataset consisting of ground view panorama imagery from the Perseverance rover, along with associated satellite view …

Topic Modeling And Culturomic Analysis Of 30,000 Books Over 100 Years Using Gensim, Michael A. Freeman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the cultural influence of historical events on English-language fiction published between 1820 and 1929. Using a corpus of 30,256 digitized books from Project Gutenberg, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling was applied to identify recurring themes across eleven decades. The study sought to determine whether historically significant events could be detected within fictional narratives. One clear instance emerged: Napoleon Bonaparte and the Napoleonic Wars appeared explicitly in the 1820s corpus. Beyond this, several thematic patterns were observed—such as maritime language in the 1840s, national identity in the 1880s, and youth-oriented dialogue in the early 20th century—that plausibly …
From Morphology To Machine Learning And Genomics: Understanding Phenotypic Variation In Wild Ducks, Sara Gonzalez
From Morphology To Machine Learning And Genomics: Understanding Phenotypic Variation In Wild Ducks, Sara Gonzalez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Understanding the genetic underpinning and distribution of phenotypic variation within and between divergent groups is core towards shedding light into how populations diverge and adapt, as well as how hybridization breaks or builds on these scenarios; and thus, central to evolutionary biology. In wild organisms, however, quantifying and linking phenotypic traits to underlying genetic processes, like mutation, gene expression, epigenetics and allele interactions, remains challenging. This difficulty arises from the complex interplay between morphology, environment, and gene regulation, as well as the logistical barriers of collecting and standardizing large-scale data across individuals and populations. As a result, researchers are increasingly …

Large Language Models As End-To-End Combinatorial Optimization Solvers, Xia Jiang, Yaoxin Wu, Minshuo Li, Zhiguang Cao, Yingqian Zhang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Combinatorial optimization (CO) problems, central to decision-making scenarios like logistics and manufacturing, are traditionally solved using problem-specific algorithms requiring significant domain expertise. While large language models (LLMs) have shown promise in automating CO problem solving, existing approaches rely on intermediate steps such as code generation or solver invocation, limiting their generality and accessibility. This paper introduces a novel framework that empowers LLMs to serve as end-to-end CO solvers by directly mapping natural language problem descriptions to solutions. We propose a two-stage training strategy: supervised fine-tuning (SFT) imparts LLMs with solution generation patterns from domain-specific solvers, while a feasibility-and-optimality-aware reinforcement learning …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The proliferation of open-source software (OSS) has made software supply chains prime targets for attacks like Package Confusion, where adversaries publish malicious packages with names deceptively similar to legitimate ones. Existing detection methods often rely on simple lexical similarity or passive analysis of known package pairs, struggle with high false positive rates (FPR), fail to proactively identify emerging threats, and are vulnerable to adversarial evasion. To overcome these limitations, we introduce AgentGuard, a novel framework for proactive, single-input package confusion detection. AgentGuard employs a multi-agent architecture that autonomously discovers potential confusion targets using fine-tuned word embedding model to hybird semantic …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
To ensure the reliability of cloud systems, their runtime status reflecting the service quality is periodically monitored with monitoring metrics, i.e., KPIs (key performance indicators). When performance issues happen, root cause localization pinpoints the specific KPIs that are responsible for the degradation of overall service quality, facilitating prompt problem diagnosis and resolution. To this end, existing methods generally locate root-cause KPIs by identifying the KPIs that exhibit a similar anomalous trend to the overall service performance. While straightforward, solely relying on the similarity calculation may be ineffective when dealing with cloud systems with complicated interdependent services. Recent deep learning-based methods …

Nonlinear Phase Space Analysis For Anomaly Detection In Ros 2 Communications: Detecting Man-In-The-Middle Attacks In Simulated Environments, William L. Locklier
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) marks a significant advancement over its predecessor through the transition from a centralized to a decentralized architecture, integrating the Data Distribution Service (DDS) to support real-time, scalable communications. Despite these improvements, inherent vulnerabilities in the ROS 2 communication stack continue to leave these systems exposed to sophisticated network-based attacks. This study leveraged nonlinear phase space analysis (NLPSA) as an intrusion detection system (IDS) to detect man-in-the-middle (MitM) attack anomalies in ROS 2 traffic. Grounded in Takens’ embedding theorem, NLPSA reconstructs the phase space of communication features and compares the resulting structure against a baseline …

Examining The Roles Of Embodiment And Theory Of Mind In Shaping User Perceptions Of Llm-Driven Conversational Agents, Elizabeth A. Schlesener
All Dissertations
Large Language Models (LLMs) have advanced conversational agents, enabling natural, human-like interactions in domains such as education, programming, and workplace collaboration. Yet, user distrust persists over privacy, accuracy, and bias. As developers work to mitigate these issues and human-AI collaboration expands, reinforcing trust in LLM-driven systems is essential. To address this problem, this dissertation explores the role of anthropomorphic form in LLM-driven conversational agents and its impact on user perception.
According to the familiarity thesis, humans attribute human-like characteristics to nonhuman entities — a process known as anthropomorphism — to better comprehend unfamiliar phenomena, based on the assumption that they …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
3D Visual Grounding (3DVG) faces persistent challenges due to coarse scene-level observations and logically inconsistent annotations, which introduce ambiguities that compromise data quality and hinder effective model supervision. To address these challenges, we introduce Refer-Judge, a novel framework that harnesses the reasoning capabilities of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) to identify and mitigate toxic data. At the core of Refer-Judge is a Jury-and-Judge Chain-of-Thought paradigm, inspired by the deliberative process of the judicial system. This framework targets the root causes of annotation noise: jurors collaboratively assess 3DVG samples from diverse perspectives, providing structured, multi-faceted evaluations. Judges then consolidate these insights …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The prevention and treatment of crop diseases are crucial for the development of smart agriculture. The classification of crop diseases based on deep learning for early disease monitoring and control has become the mainstream direction of research. This paper proposes a novel deep learning model called ”CropCapsNet”, which combines Squeeze-and-Excitation Inception (SE-Inception) module and has improved capsule structure for crop disease classification. The network first extracts shallow features of input samples through double-layer convolution, then uses SE-Inception to achieve deep multi-scale feature acquisition, and finally outputs classification results through an improved capsule structure. SE-Inception adds Squeeze-and-Excitation(SE) attention after each multi-scale …

Sopo: Text-To-Motion Generation Using Semi-Online Preference Optimization, Xiaofeng Tan, Hongsong Wang, Xin Geng, Pan Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Text-to-motion generation is essential for advancing the creative industry but often presents challenges in producing consistent, realistic motions. To address this, we focus on fine-tuning text-to-motion models to consistently favor highquality, human-preferred motions—a critical yet largely unexplored problem. In this work, we theoretically investigate the DPO under both online and offline settings, and reveal their respective limitation: overfitting in offline DPO, and biased sampling in online DPO. Building on our theoretical insights, we introduce Semi-online Preference Optimization (SoPo), a DPO-based method for training text-to-motion models using “semi-online” data pair, consisting of unpreferred motion from online distribution and preferred motion in …
Hybrid-Balance Gflownet For Solving Vehicle Routing Problems, Ni Zhang, Zhiguang Cao
Hybrid-Balance Gflownet For Solving Vehicle Routing Problems, Ni Zhang, Zhiguang Cao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Existing GFlowNet-based methods for vehicle routing problems (VRPs) typically employ Trajectory Balance (TB) to achieve global optimization but often neglect important aspects of local optimization. While Detailed Balance (DB) addresses local optimization more effectively, it alone falls short in solving VRPs, which inherently require holistic trajectory optimization. To address these limitations, we introduce the Hybrid-Balance GFlowNet (HBG) framework, which uniquely integrates TB and DB in a principled and adaptive manner by aligning their intrinsically complementary strengths. Additionally, we propose a specialized inference strategy for depot-centric scenarios like the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP), leveraging the depot node's greater flexibility in …
