The number of studies on deep learning for medical diagnosis is expanding, and these systems are often claimed to outperform clinicians. However, only a few systems have shown medical efficacy. From this perspective, we examine a wide range of deep learning algorithms for the assessment of glioblastoma - a common brain tumor in older adults that is lethal. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are the standard treatments for glioblastoma patients. The methylation status of the MGMT promoter, a specific genetic sequence found in the tumor, affects chemotherapy's effectiveness. MGMT promoter methylation improves chemotherapy response and survival in several cancers. MGMT promoter …

We are more interested in recovering and salvaging containers which may be loaded with either valuable or harmful substances. Therefore, we designed various container models to account for different loading conditions and then exported them to a 3D printer. Six small container models were dropped into the trailer pool at the University of New Orleans (UNO) as planned at angles of 0°, 45°, and 90°.

After collecting all the videos using a high-definition camera set outside the tank, we perform pre-processing tasks on the videos in preparation for model training. The two-phase angle classification method uses a pretrained ResNet50 model …

Responsibility Gaps And Black Box Healthcare Ai: Shared Responsibilization As A Solution, Benjamin H Lang, Sven Nyholm, Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

As sophisticated artificial intelligence software becomes more ubiquitously and more intimately integrated within domains of traditionally human endeavor, many are raising questions over how responsibility (be it moral, legal, or causal) can be understood for an AI’s actions or influence on an outcome. So called “responsibility gaps” occur whenever there exists an apparent chasm in the ordinary attribution of moral blame or responsibility when an AI automates physical or cognitive labor otherwise performed by human beings and commits an error. Healthcare administration is an industry ripe for responsibility gaps produced by these kinds of AI. The moral stakes of healthcare …

Exploring Non-Linear Dynamical Structure For Knee Kinematics Using Machine Learning, Liora Mayats-Alpay, Rahul Soangra

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Human movement involves complex coordination between multiple limbs during execution. Human gait is cyclic, and the knee's movement inherently follows nonlinear dynamic behavior that linear models cannot adequately capture. In this study, advanced Machine Learning (ML) techniques were employed to combine the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) algorithm using Python to reveal governing equations of knee movement during walking. We gathered a single subject's knee motion data using infrared markers during normal walking. We utilized the PySINDy library to determine the governing equations and calculated the coefficient of dynamical systems associated with knee kinematics. Our results emphasize governing equations …

Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation, Zhaozheng Chen Dec 2023

Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation, Zhaozheng Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental task in computer vision that assigns a label to every pixel in an image based on the semantic meaning of the objects present. It demands a large amount of pixel-level labeled images for training deep models. Weakly-supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) is a more feasible approach that uses only weak annotations to learn the segmentation task. Image-level label based WSSS is the most challenging and popular, where only the class label for the entire image is provided as supervision. To address this challenge, Class Activation Map (CAM) has emerged as a powerful technique in WSSS. CAM …

Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu Dec 2023

Estimating Propensity For Causality-Based Recommendation Without Exposure Data, Zhongzhou Liu, Yuan Fang, Min Wu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Causality-based recommendation systems focus on the causal effects of user-item interactions resulting from item exposure (i.e., which items are recommended or exposed to the user), as opposed to conventional correlation-based recommendation. They are gaining popularity due to their multi-sided benefits to users, sellers and platforms alike. However, existing causality-based recommendation methods require additional input in the form of exposure data and/or propensity scores (i.e., the probability of exposure) for training. Such data, crucial for modeling causality in recommendation, are often not available in real-world situations due to technical or privacy constraints. In this paper, we bridge the gap by proposing …
