A Performance Evaluation Of Architectural Coatings To Preserve Aerosol Paint On Concrete, Riley Morris May 2022

A Performance Evaluation Of Architectural Coatings To Preserve Aerosol Paint On Concrete, Riley Morris

All Theses

The growing movement of assigning cultural and heritage value to graffiti and street art is one without a preservation solution to ensure the longevity of these works in-situ in an outdoor environment. The goal of this thesis was to provide a comprehensive evaluation of six architectural topcoats’ performance when applied as a conservation treatment to outdoor aerosol graffiti and street art on concrete substrate. An artist’s quality, durable, color-fast spray-paint was applied to twenty-eight concrete test panels to mimic the application of graffiti or street art. Six topcoats, Prosoco SC-1, Prosoco Gloss n’ Guard WB, Keim Faceal Oleo HD®, Keim …

Corrosion Protection Of 304 Stainless Steel With Melting Gels Coatings, Mario Aparicio, Andrei Jitianu, Gabriela Rodriguez, Ahmad Dengah, Kutaiba Marzoki, Jadra Mosa, Lisa C. Klein Jun 2015

Corrosion Protection Of 304 Stainless Steel With Melting Gels Coatings, Mario Aparicio, Andrei Jitianu, Gabriela Rodriguez, Ahmad Dengah, Kutaiba Marzoki, Jadra Mosa, Lisa C. Klein

Publications and Research

Methyl-substituted melting gels were used to coat AISI 304 stainless steel substrates. Crack-free coatings up to 1 mm in thickness were obtained. SEM micrographs of cross-sections con fi rm good adhesion to the surface. Samples were subjected to structural characterization using FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Mechanical properties were investigated by micro-scratch tests. Electrochemical analyses (anodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) were performed in 3.5% NaCl solutions. Electrochemical tests show excellent performance of the coatings against corrosion with no sign of degradation after several months of immersion.

Exploring The Chemistry Of Phosphorus For Photopolymer Applications, Ryan Guterman May 2015

Exploring The Chemistry Of Phosphorus For Photopolymer Applications, Ryan Guterman

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Prior to this thesis, phosphorus-containing polymers and photopolymerization represented two distinct, non-overlapping fields of study. This thesis examined the prospect of combining these two approaches to create a system possessing the benefits of both techniques. By exploiting the chemistry of phosphorus, and using photopolymerization as a fabrication method, new materials were developed and assessed for their use in various applications.

Among the many phosphorus compounds that may be used in polymer science, phosphonium salts and primary phosphines were of specific focus. First, highly fluorinated phosphonium monomers were developed to create photopolymerized hydrophobic surfaces. A structure-activity relationship was established, as both …
