A Spin-Coated Tiox/Pt Nanolayered Anodic Catalyst For The Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Islam M. Al-Akraa, Ahmad M. Mohammad Prof
A Spin-Coated Tiox/Pt Nanolayered Anodic Catalyst For The Direct Formic Acid Fuel Cells, Islam M. Al-Akraa, Ahmad M. Mohammad Prof
Chemical Engineering
The CO poisoning of the platinum anodic catalyst which typically functions the catalytic deterioration of the direct formic acid fuel cells could be minimized with a simple modification for Pt with titanium oxide. The fabrication scheme involved the spin-coating of a Ti precursor onto a Pt thin layer that was physically sputtered onto a Si substrate. The whole assembly was subjected to a post-annealing processing to produce the TiOx layer (60 nm) in a porous structure (mostly Anatase) atop of the Pt surface. The porous nature of the TiOx layer permitted the participation of Pt in the electrocatalysis of the …
Ionic Liquid Functionalized Β-Cyclodextrin Modified Electrode As Electrochemical Sensor For 2,4-Dichlorophenol, Fairuz Liyana Mohd Rasdi
Ionic Liquid Functionalized Β-Cyclodextrin Modified Electrode As Electrochemical Sensor For 2,4-Dichlorophenol, Fairuz Liyana Mohd Rasdi
Student Works (2020-2029)
This thesis described the synthesis and characterization of ionic liquid monofunctionalized β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-1-BIMOTs) and ionic liquid difunctionalized β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-2-BIMOTs) for sensor applications. The physical characterizations of these compounds have been conducted using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) analyses. These compounds were used as modifiers for carbon paste electrode (CPE). Cyclic voltammetry and chrono-amperometry methods were employed to examine the electrochemical responses of all prepared CPEs. All prepared electrodes show responses towards the target analyte of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). Both β-CD-1-BIMOTs/CPE and β-CD-2-BIMOTs/CPE give higher current (i) responses compared …

Development And Validation Of Advanced Analytical Methods For Pesticides, Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, And Opioids In Soil And Drinking Water, Christopher Skaggs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Environmental pollution from contaminants is a serious concern in a world where more and more pesticides and pharmaceuticals are being used, sometimes improperly and in excess. Since pesticides are used on practically every crop on Earth, it’s no surprise that these compounds are detected in soil, water, and processed agricultural commodities meant for human consumption. Additionally, because of the ubiquity of pharmaceuticals, specifically opioids, and their inherent addictive properties, these compounds are being over-consumed. Because current waste-water treatments can be insufficient to remove them from water sources, this consumption has led to the detection of these compounds in drinking water. …

Transient, acutely toxic concentrations of pesticides in streams can go undetected by fixed-interval sampling programs. Here we compare temporal patterns in occurrence of current-use pesticides in daily composite samples to those in weekly composite and weekly discrete samples of surface water from 14 small stream sites. Samples were collected over 10–14 weeks at 7 stream sites in each of the Midwestern and Southeastern United States. Samples were analyzed for over 200 pesticides and degradates by direct aqueous injection liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Nearly 2 and 3 times as many unique pesticides were detected in daily samples as in …
Molecular Dynamics Simulations Of Phase Behaviour And Structural Studies Of Guanidinium Triflate Ionic Liquid And Its Mixture With Water And N-Methyldiethanolamine For Carbon Dioxide Removal, Naimah Haron
Student Works (2020-2029)
Molecular dynamics (MDs) simulations with an all-atom force field have been carried out to understand the phase equilibrium behaviour of aqueous guanidinium triflate [gua][OTf] ionic liquid (IL) (binary system) at 440.15 K, as well as the phase equilibrium behaviour of N-methyl diethanolamine (MDEA) with aqueous [gua][OTf] IL (ternary system) at 298.15 K. This work further elaborated the understanding of absorption mechanism of carbon dioxide (CO2) into ternary system at 298.15 K. For binary system, the simulations measured changes in different physical properties such as density, structural, bonding properties (radial distribution function (RDF)), water clustering and hydrogen bonding) and dynamic property …
Applications Of Drones In Atmospheric Chemistry, Travis J. Schuyler
Applications Of Drones In Atmospheric Chemistry, Travis J. Schuyler
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
The emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) has changed the composition of the atmosphere during the Anthropocene. A major technical and scientific challenge is quantifying the resulting fugitive trace gas fluxes under variable meteorological conditions. Accurately documenting the sources and magnitude of GHGs emission is an important undertaking for discriminating contributions of different processes to radiative forcing. Therefore, the adverse environmental and health effects of undetected gas leaks motivates new methods of detecting, characterizing, and quantifying plumes of fugitive trace gases. Currently, there is no mobile platform able to quantify trace gases at altitudes(UASs), or drones, can be deployed on-site in …
Identification Of Adsorbate Ft-Ir Bands Using In-Situ Techniques: Pd Speciation And Adsorption Chemistry Of Pd-Zeolites For Passive Nox Adsorption, Robert Bruce Pace Iii
Identification Of Adsorbate Ft-Ir Bands Using In-Situ Techniques: Pd Speciation And Adsorption Chemistry Of Pd-Zeolites For Passive Nox Adsorption, Robert Bruce Pace Iii
Theses and Dissertations--Chemistry
To meet increasingly stringent automotive emissions standards, further improvements in catalytic converter design are necessary. Current automotive catalyst systems are effective at eliminating emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) once the catalyst reaches operational temperature (~200 °C). NOx emitted at lower catalyst temperatures now comprises most of the NOx released during a typical test cycle. Referred to as “the cold start problem” this issue has come to the forefront of automotive catalyst development, as mitigating these emissions is necessary to further reduce automotive emissions. Passive NOx adsorbers present an appealing solution to the cold start problem, …
Determination Of Samarium And Dysprosium Solubility, Seana Brennan
Determination Of Samarium And Dysprosium Solubility, Seana Brennan
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
In recent years, the use of Rare Earth Elements (REE) has rapidly increased, resulting in numerous potential anthropogenic inputs to the environment. As a result, these metals are emerging as microcontaminants and pose a potential threat to aquatic life. However, the toxicity of REE are largely unknown due, in part, to the limited information on their chemical speciation. The purpose of this project was to gain an understanding of REE precipitate formation and solubility as the foundation for the development of the chemical equilibrium component of toxicity prediction models. Solubility experiments were conducted with Samarium, (Sm), a light REE, and …
Reconstructing Hydrologic Conditions And Metals Supplied By The Peace River To The Peace-Athabasca Delta, Jelle André Faber
Reconstructing Hydrologic Conditions And Metals Supplied By The Peace River To The Peace-Athabasca Delta, Jelle André Faber
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD) in northern Alberta, Canada, is recognized internationally for its ecological, historical, and cultural significance. The delta is mostly within Wood Buffalo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The construction of the WAC Bennett Dam (1967) and the Site C Dam (ongoing, 2024) on the Peace River, and expansion of the Alberta Oil Sands industry along the Athabasca River have raised concerns over water quantity and quality in the delta. When industry operations began, effective monitoring had not been implemented. Consequently, pre-industrial reference conditions are unknown and can …

Vehicle hydrocarbon (HC) emissions can be emitted from either tailpipe or non-tailpipe locations and understanding their fleet apportionment is important for successful air pollution policy. Vehicles initially misidentified as having elevated tailpipe HC emissions first indicated that roadside exhaust sensors could detect the presence of evaporative HC emissions as increased noise in the HC/carbon dioxide (CO2) correlation measurement. The 90th percentile of the largest residual of the HC/CO2 correlation is defined as a running loss index (RLI) for each measurement. An RLI that is three standard deviations or greater above the instruments noise indicates possible evaporative …
