Property Morphology Correlations Of Organic Semiconductor Nanowires, Frederick Marshall Mcfarland
Property Morphology Correlations Of Organic Semiconductor Nanowires, Frederick Marshall Mcfarland
Dissertations
Chemically doped and non-doped P3HT nanoaggregates are studied to establish a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between their morphology and various optoelectronic properties. One-dimensional nanoaggregates of P3HT are chosen as the model systems here due to their high surface/volume ratio and suitability for microscopic investigations.
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) are used to correlate property/morphology characteristics of non-doped P3HT nanowhiskers. Topographical measurements indicate that individually folded P3HT motifs stack via interfacial interactions to form nanowhiskers in solution. Further aging leads to multi-layered nanowhiskers with greater stability and less instances of π-π sliding of interfacial edge-on …
High Resolution Spectra Of Carbon Monoxide, Propane And Ammonia For Atmospheric Remote Sensing, Christopher Andrew Beale
High Resolution Spectra Of Carbon Monoxide, Propane And Ammonia For Atmospheric Remote Sensing, Christopher Andrew Beale
OES Theses and Dissertations
Spectroscopy is a critical tool for analyzing atmospheric data. Identification of atmospheric parameters such as temperature, pressure and the existence and concentrations of constituent gases via remote sensing techniques are only possible with spectroscopic data. These form the basis of model atmospheres which may be compared to observations to determine such parameters. To this end, this dissertation explores the spectroscopy of three molecules: ammonia, propane and carbon monoxide.
Infrared spectra have been recorded for ammonia in the region 2400-9000 cm-1. These spectra were recorded at elevated temperatures (from 293-973 K) using a Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS). Comparison between …

La reaction with propene is carried out in a laser-vaporization molecular beam source. Three La-hydrocarbon radicals are characterized by mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy. One of these radicals is methylenelanthanum [La(CH2)] (Cs), a Schrock-type metal carbene. The other two are a five-membered 1-lanthanacyclopent-3-en [La(CH2CHCHCH2)] (Cs) and a tetrahedron-like trimethylenemethanelanthanum [La(C(CH2)3)] (C3v). Adiabatic ionization energies and metal-ligand stretching and hydrocarbon-based bending frequencies of these species are measured from the MATI spectra, preferred structures and electronic states are identified by comparing the experimental measurements and spectral …
Differentiation Of Hair Using Atr Ft-Ir Spectroscopy: A Statistical Classification Of Dyed And Non-Dyed Hairs, Matthew S. Boll
Differentiation Of Hair Using Atr Ft-Ir Spectroscopy: A Statistical Classification Of Dyed And Non-Dyed Hairs, Matthew S. Boll
Chemistry
Although hair is one of the most common and abundant types of evidence found at a crime scene, the current forensic analyses employed underutilize its full potential evidentiary value. Microscopy is the fundamental technique used to analyze forensic hair evidence, but even this routine and well-accepted method has limitations. In this study, non-dyed and dyed hairs from individuals varying in race, biological sex, and age, were analyzed using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform-infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy. Through the incorporation of multivariate statistical analysis, spectra collected from dyed and non-dyed hairs were differentiated with high accuracy. After hair spectra were determined …

Articles
A series of complexes incorporating Zn(II), Cu(II), and Pd(II) ions, and 4-(5-heptyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (L1) as model ligand, was synthesized in order to examine the nature of potential interactions between biologically active ligands, 1,3,4-thiadiazoles and metal ions with proven biological relevance. The structures of the compounds isolated were characterized using a number of spectroscopic methods including IR, Uv–vis, AAS, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence (TRF). The results obtained suggest that the L1-Zn(II) and L1-Pd(II) complexes consist of one molecule of L1 and one acetate ion acting as ligands, while the L1-Cu(II) complex adapts a 2:1 (L1: metal) stoichiometry. The coordination of L1 …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The Cl replacement reactions of 4-fluorobenzyl(N/O)spirocyclotriphosphazene (2) with excess monoamines led to the formation of 4-fluorobenzylspiro(N/O)tetraaminocyclotriphosphazenes (2a-2d). The partly substituted \textbf{dispiro 3b and dispiro 3c and fully substituted trispirocyclotriphosphazenes (trans 4a, cis 4c, 4d, and 4e) were obtained, respectively, from the reactions of 2 with one equimolar and two equimolar amounts of diamines, aminoalcohol, and diols. Although efforts were made for the separation of the cis/trans and optical isomers of the dispiro phosphazenes, only one set of diastereomers (RR/RS or SS/SR) of dispiro 3b and dispiro 3c was isolated, respectively. The $^{31}$P NMR spectral data of the other dispiro phosphazenes …

Further Development Of Raman Spectroscopy For Body Fluid Investigation : Forensic Identification, Limit Of Detection, And Donor Characterization, Claire K. Muro
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The challenges to forensic body fluid analysis have placed limitations on the type of information that investigators can acquire and how that information can be collected. In recent years, Raman spectroscopy has proven itself useful for characterizing body fluids. In 2008, a large-scale investigation was undertaken to explore the use of Raman spectroscopy as a means of identifying body fluids. This work resulted in multidimensional Raman spectroscopic signatures for the five main body fluids: semen, peripheral blood, saliva, vaginal fluid, and sweat. These studies were incredibly successful and created the foundation for years of continued research. Accordingly, the studies included …
Micro-Spectroscopy Of Bio-Assemblies At The Single Cell Level, Jeslin Kera
Micro-Spectroscopy Of Bio-Assemblies At The Single Cell Level, Jeslin Kera
Honors Undergraduate Theses
In this thesis, we investigate biological molecules on a micron scale in the ultraviolet spectral region through the non-destructive confocal absorption microscopy. The setup involves a combination of confocal microscope with a UV light excitation beam to measure the optical absorption spectra with spatial resolution of 1.4 μm in the lateral and 3.6 μm in the axial direction. Confocal absorption microscopy has the benefits of requiring no labels and only low light intensity for excitation while providing a strong signal from the contrast generated by the attenuation of propagating light due to absorption. This enables spatially resolved measurements of single …

Improving Cavity Enhanced Spectroscopy Of Molecular Ions In The Mid-Infrared With Up-Conversion Detection And Brewster-Plate Spoilers, Charles R. Markus, Adam J. Perry, James N. Hodges, Benjamin J. Mccall
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
The performance of sensitive spectroscopic methods in the mid-IR is often limited by fringing due to parasitic etalons and the background noise in mid-infrared detectors. In particular, the technique Noise Immune Cavity Enhanced Optical Heterodyne Velocity Modulation Spectroscopy (NICE-OHVMS), which is capable of determining the frequencies of strong rovibrational transitions of molecular ions with sub-MHz uncertainty, needs improved sensitivity in order to probe weaker transitions. In this work, we have implemented up-conversion detection with NICE-OHVMS in the 3.2 - 3.9 μm region to enable the use of faster and more sensitive detectors which cover visible wavelengths. The higher bandwidth enabled …

Quantitative Analysis Of Acetylsalicylic Acid By Q-Nmr (Quantitative-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy), Charles Flemming Jr.
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Quantitative analysis is an important step during pharmaceutical drug development. Currently, the pharmaceutical industry uses high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for quantitative analysis of organic compounds as the preferred technique. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique has an inherent ability to quantify a given analyte and may be used to quantify organic compounds. Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (q-NMR) of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) was conducted using tert-butyl alcohol (tert-butanol) as the internal standard and deuterated chloroform (CDCl3) as the solvent. Preparations of ASA solutions in low and high concentration ranges, 1.0 mM – 10.1 …

Ultraviolet And Infrared Spectroscopy Of Synthetic Foldamers, Aib Homopeptides, And Solvated 1,2-Diphenylethane In The Gas Phase, Joseph R. Gord
Open Access Dissertations
The work presented here implements a supersonic jet expansion source to funnel the population of model peptides and solvated-bichromophore clusters into their low lying structural minima and to collisionally cool these minima to their respective zero-point vibrational levels. Single-conformation ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy techniques are then used to probe these systems and investigate their electronic properties and uncover their intrinsic conformational preferences in the gas phase.
Model β/γ-peptides known as synthetic foldamers and aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) homopeptides incorporate structural constraints that are designed/known to impose particular structural motifs. Here the ability of a β/γ-dipeptide to replicate the backbone length of …

Single-Conformation Spectroscopy Of Hydrogen Bonding Networks: Solvation, Synthetic Foldamers, And Neurodegenerative Diseases, Patrick S. Walsh
Open Access Dissertations
The hydrogen bond is one of the most important interactions in natural processes ranging from protein folding to chemical reactions. Two complementary methodologies are applied to understanding this important interaction: top-down and bottom-up. Top-down methods use large molecules, such as proteins, revealing secondary structure information. Bottom-up experiments are performed on small molecules, utilizing high-resolution spectroscopy to reveal underlying quantum mechanical effects. The complexity gap is formed between these two experimental regimes; between large and small molecules; between bulk and individual solvent molecules; between classical mechanics calculations and quantum chemical calculations. This dissertation will focus on the application of gas phase, …
Novel Pathways To High-Efficiency Chalcopyrite Photovoltaic Devices: A Spectroscopic Investigation Of Alternative Buffer Layers And Alkali-Treated Absorbers, Michelle Mezher
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Within the past few years, breakthroughs in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGSe) thin-film photovoltaic device efficiencies (on a laboratory scale) were achieved utilizing alkali-treated (KF) absorbers. Na incorporation in the CIGSe absorber, either diffused from the substrate or deliberately deposited, affects the surface electronic properties of the CIGSe absorber. The role of Na, however, is still not fully understood with some studies suggesting that Na also passivates defects at the grain boundaries. Replacing Na with K offered an efficiency boost resulting in KF treatments becoming the new “hot topic” in the chalcopyrite field, both in terms of understanding how the treatment changes …

Microwave Measurements Of The Tropolone-Formic Acid Doubly Hydrogen Bonded Dimer, Aaron M. Pejlovas, Agapito Serrato, Wei Lin, Stephen G. Kukolich
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)
The microwave spectrum was measured for the doubly hydrogen bonded dimer formed between tropolone and formic acid. The predicted symmetry of this dimer was C2v(M), and it was expected that the concerted proton tunneling motion would be observed. After measuring 25 a- and b-type rotational transitions, no splittings which could be associated with a concerted double proton tunneling motion were observed. The calculated barrier to the proton tunneling motion is near 15 000 cm-1, which would likely make the tunneling frequencies too small to observe in the microwave spectra. The rotational and centrifugal distortion constants determined from the measured transitions …

About 90% of the inter-connected databases handle data that are used for the interpretation of astronomical spectra and for modelling in many fields of astrophysics. Recently the VAMDC Consortium has connected databases from the radiation damage and the plasma communities, as well as promoting the publication of data from Indian institutes. This paper describes how the VAMDC Consortium is organised for the optimal distribution of atomic and molecular data for …
3d Printing Applications Within Spectrophotometry, Eric J. Stanczyk
3d Printing Applications Within Spectrophotometry, Eric J. Stanczyk
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy is a tool used throughout the field of chemistry and in chemical labs across the world. Spectrophotometers are a core technology in analytical chemistry, and are used to obtain accurate data on solution concentration. Unfortunately spectrophotometers can be difficult to obtain due to their high cost and low availability outside of a laboratory; this is especially true in either high school or lower grades where buying a spectrophotometer could be considered unreasonable due to price. There are ways to obtain cheaper spectrophotometers, but they can have a high initial cost or low overall quality. This paper will discuss …

Issues In Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy For Measurements In The Deep Ocean And Other High-Pressure Environments, Joseph C. Bonvallet
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation describes fundamental and applied studies that have advanced the understanding and application laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to the deep-ocean environment and to operation on a deep-ocean submersible. Chapter one is an overview of LIBS including a brief history, LIBS theory, the instrumentation typically used, and a specific application. Chapter two analyzes the effect that monodisperse suspended particles have on LIBS emission intensity and on the formation of a LIBS plasma. This chapter demonstrates that for particle concentrations similar to those found in the neutrally buoyant regions around hydrothermal vents there is little effect on the LIBS emission …

Optical Spectroscopy And Chemometrics For Discrimination Of Dyed Textile Fibers And Magnetic Audio Tapes, Nathan C. Fuenffinger
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the application of both novel and standard chemometric approaches toward societal problems of interest in the areas of forensic science and cultural heritage preservation. Microspectrophotometry (MSP), a technique enabling measurements of absorption of electromagnetic radiation by microscopic materials in the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) region, is widely used by forensic examiners for comparisons of metameric textile fibers. These comparisons are often hindered, however, by the raw or normalized spectra showing little detail or having few points of comparison. Derivative preprocessing can enhance structure in some instances. We have demonstrated through the use of multivariate statistics that derivatives are …

The recent investigation of the decay of 124Cs to study the nuclear structure of 124Xe, and how the β-decay measurements complemented previous Coulomb excitation studies, is highlighted, including the extraction of the deformation parameters for the excited 0+ …
Differentiation Of Human, Animal And Synthetic Hair By Atr Ftir Spectroscopy, Jeremy Manheim
Differentiation Of Human, Animal And Synthetic Hair By Atr Ftir Spectroscopy, Jeremy Manheim
Chemistry
Hair fibers are ubiquitous to every environment and are the most commonly found form of trace evidence at crime scenes. The primary difficulty forensic examiners face after retrieving a hair sample is determining who it came from. Currently, the methodology of microscopic examination of potential hair evidence is absent of statistical probability and is inherently subjective. Another method, involving DNA analysis, takes months to conduct and the majority of times is unsuccessful due to its degradation and absence from the hair. Here, Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy coupled with advanced statistics was used to identify a …
Investigating The Photorecombination Dynamics In Molecular High-Harmonic Spectra, Benjamin Parker Wilson
Investigating The Photorecombination Dynamics In Molecular High-Harmonic Spectra, Benjamin Parker Wilson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The work presented in this dissertation will relate the photorecombination dynamics to photoionization dynamics in SF6 utilizing the self-probing mechanism, high harmonic generation (HHG). This work specifically aims to establish parameters for which the comparison is applicable and the macroscopic complications inherent in HHG do not interfere with the extraction of dynamic information. The first part of this work established the macroscopic experimental apparatus necessary for consistent spectroscopic observation. It is shown that using a gas jet that is an order of magnitude shorter than the Rayleigh length of the driving laser results in more consistent harmonic spatial profiles and …

Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) possess unique plasmonic properties, enabling them to serve as sub-diffraction light sources and nano-antennae for a wide range of applications. Here we report the specific interaction of single Ag NPs with single EGFP molecules and a high dependence of their interaction upon localized-surface-plasmon-resonance (LSPR) spectra of single Ag NPs and EGFP. The LSPR spectra of single red Ag NPs show a stunning 60 nm blue-shift during their incubation with EGFP, whereas they remain unchanged during their incubation with bovine serum albumin (BSA). Interestingly, the peak wavelengths of the LSPR spectra of green and blue Ag NPs …
Photoelectrons And Recombining Electrons In Atomic And Molecular Systems, Kristen D'Ann Fulfer
Photoelectrons And Recombining Electrons In Atomic And Molecular Systems, Kristen D'Ann Fulfer
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work in this dissertation explores how photoelectrons enter and exit atoms and molecules. The electron rescattering events which may occur during photoionization or photorecombination processes play a dominant role in the understanding of how photoelectrons enter and exit molecules, which is intrinsically linked to how chemical reactions occur. Chapters 3-4 of this dissertation present evidence of vibrational mode specific breakdown of the Franck-Condon Principle in the photoionization of low symmetry molecules, acrolein and the singly halogenated thiophenes, due to resonant and non-resonant electron rescattering dynamics. In Chapters 5-6, the disentanglement of the valence electronic structure, as well as evidence …

The Spectroscopy Of Divinvltelluride, Brent A. Horn, S. R. Goates
Journal of Undergraduate Research
0rgano-tellurides are industrially important compounds. One of these compounds which has been studied at BYU is divinyltelluride (DVT). Dr. Noel Owen and colleagues from the Department of Chemistry have done extensive studies on the stable molecular conformations of DVT using quantum mechanical calculations and matrix-isolation FT-IR. Our goal is to learn more about the structure and properties of DVT by probing the electronic energy levels of the molecule. We wanted to focus on obtaining laser-induced fluorescence from supersonic jet expansion of DVT molecules. Molecular beams are excellent for doing laser fluorescence experiments because many of the line broadening mechanisms that …
