Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a rapidly growing technology at the forefront of sustainable chemistry, leveraging the ability of microorganisms to catalyze electrochemical reactions to synthesize valuable compounds from renewable energy sources. The reduction of CO2 is a major target application for MES, but research in this area has been stifled, especially with the use of direct electron transfer (DET)-based microbial systems. The major fundamental hurdle that needs to be overcome is the low efficiency of CO2 reduction largely attributed to minimal microbial access to CO2 owing to its low solubility in the electrolyte. With their tunable physical …

Accumulation of arsenic (As) in rice grain was reported in many regions of the world, including the United States, which has been a threat to human health. This field research investigated the grain as accumulation and its relationship with the uptake of selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), and cadmium (Cd) in soils with and without monosodium methane arsonate (MSMA) amended, as effects of selected rice cultivars and water management. Results indicated that MSMA increased the accumulation of as and Se but decreased Mo for all six cultivars under four irrigation management. MSMA also increased grain-Cd in some cultivars. in no MSMA-amended …

Impact Of Solar Radiation On Perchlorate Formation In The Atmosphere: Evidence From Ice Core Measurements, Bishnu Kunwar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perchlorate, which derives from both anthropogenic and natural sources in the current environment, poses a substantial health hazard to humans as it competes with iodine uptake in the thyroid gland. Consequently, there has been considerable concern about minimizing human exposure to environmental perchlorate by restricting its release from man-made sources. However, the absence of a clear understanding regarding the respective contributions of man-made and natural sources has hindered widespread regulation efforts. A 300-year (1700–2007) Summit, Greenland ice core record from a previous study showed relatively stable perchlorate concentrations in Greenland snow prior to 1980, with some elevated perchlorate levels associated …

Designing highly active and robust catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction is key to improving the overall efficiency of the water splitting reaction. It has been previously demonstrated that evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) can be used to synthesize highly porous and high surface area cerate-based fluorite nano catalysts, and that substitution of Ce with 50% rare earth (RE) cations significantly improves electrocatalyst activity. Herein, the defect structure of the best performing nano catalyst in the series are further explored, Nd2Ce2O7, with a combination of neutron diffraction and neutron pair distribution function analysis. It is …

In this article, we demonstrated carbon aerogel-silica composites derived from polyurea-cross-linked silica xerogel powders (C-PUA@silica) as anodes for Na-ion batteries. These xerogel-derived hard carbons with embedded silica showed a stable high capacity. Of the several hard carbon samples derived at different temperatures, the pyrolyzed sample at 800 °C (C-PUA@silica-800) showed a high capacity of 236 mAh/g at a current density of 10 mA/g and a stable cycle-life at 200 mAh/g. The galvanostatic charge-discharge curves displayed a sloping voltage profile reminiscent of the adsorption mechanism of Na+ storage. On the other hand, higher temperature-pyrolyzed samples at 1300 °C (C-PUA@silica-1300) displayed a …
Studies Towards High Surface Area Porous Polymers Via Cross-Coupling Methodology, Anthony Lybrand
Studies Towards High Surface Area Porous Polymers Via Cross-Coupling Methodology, Anthony Lybrand
Wayne State University Theses
Porous polymers, known for their high internal surface area and robust chemical stability, are promising candidates for applications in gas storage, water purification, energy storage, and catalysis. The Yamamoto-type Ullmann reaction, known for yielding high porosity polymers, serves as a benchmark in this study. However, its limitations as a homocoupling reaction restricts the synthesis of ordered A-B type copolymers. This research addresses this challenge by investigating the use of cross-coupling reactions, particularly the Negishi reaction, to synthesize A-B type copolymers with reduced defectivity and enhanced surface area. The synthesis of fully-metalated intermediates and their subsequent polymerization are discussed in detail. …

Probing Microscopic Properties Of Next Generation Materials Using Coherent Vibrational And Electronic Spectroscopy, S Mudiyanselage Sachithra Tikiri Kumara Wanasinghe
Wayne State University Dissertations
The dissertation research focused on understanding the relationship between the chemical structure of organic molecules and their photophysical properties, particularly examining coherent electronic and vibrational coupling within and between molecules, with implications for next-generation energy technologies. In Chapter 2, we employed both steady-state and transient optical and magnetic spectroscopic techniques to understand the electronic delocalization in both singlet and triplet exciton delocalization in weakly bound porphyrin dimeric molecules. Our results highlight that the delocalization of singlet exciton delocalization does not guarantee the delocalization of triplet excitons between weakly bound porphyrin macromolecules. Our studies demonstrate how one can access the electronic …

Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Class Iia Histone Deacetylase (Hdac) Inhibitors, Lauren Nicole Kotsull
Wayne State University Dissertations
Histone deacetylase (HDAC) proteins are linked to disease states, including cancer, and have become important targets for therapeutic development. Many inhibitors have been developed to target HDAC proteins, including FDA-approved inhibitors Vorinostat (SAHA), Belinostat, Romidepsin, and Panobinostat. These inhibitors non-specifically influence most of the 11 metal-dependent HDAC isoforms, which might contribute to the side effects that patients experience during treatment. The lack of selectivity also diminishes the use of HDAC inhibitors as biomedical research tools. To address these drawbacks, the development of selective inhibitors has been heavily studied. Yet, reported inhibitors are predominantly selective for class I HDAC isoforms (HDACs …
Supply And Consumption Of Dissolved Organic Phosphorus Across The Subtropical Indian Ocean, Corinne Richard
Supply And Consumption Of Dissolved Organic Phosphorus Across The Subtropical Indian Ocean, Corinne Richard
Honors Theses and Capstones
The Indian Ocean is an understudied region for marine phosphorus (P) biogeochemistry. Emerging evidence indicates marine phytoplankton can adapt to decreasing supplies of inorganic P, a required nutrient for growth, by alternatively utilizing organic forms of P. Here we investigate the dissolved organic phosphorus concentration ([DOP]) distribution across the southern Indian Ocean using observations collected on the I05 US GO-SHIP Cruise (2023) across ~33ºS latitude. We quantify the longitudinal variability of [DOP] in the upper 350 m of the Indian Ocean and infer its rate of biological consumption from surface waters, contributing as an organic nutrient to sustain marine autotrophs …

Discovery Of Dna Aptamers As Probes For Detecting Ranavirus Mcp, Corbin Hudson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Global amphibian populations have been declining since the late 20th century; one of the most significant contributors to these declines is a genus of viral pathogens known as Ranavirus (Rv). Frog virus 3 is one of these viral agents and is currently found affecting frog populations throughout NJ, MD, PA, DE, and VA. While Frog virus 3 is most known for afflicting frogs, the Ranavirus genus can also infect bony fish species as well as reptiles, allowing for a wide vector of transmission and making its spread a danger both locally and globally. In the absence of a cure, it …

Plasmids are mobile genetic elements known to carry secondary metabolic genes that affect the fitness and survival of microbes in the environment. Well-studied cases of plasmidencoded secondary metabolic genes in marine habitats include toxin/antitoxin and antibiotic biosynthesis/resistance genes. Here, we examine metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from the permanently-stratified water column of the Cariaco Basin for integrated plasmids that encode biosynthetic gene clusters of secondary metabolites (smBGCs). We identify 16 plasmid-borne smBGCs in MAGs associated primarily with Planctomycetota and Pseudomonadota that encode terpenesynthesizing genes, and genes for production of ribosomal and non-ribosomal peptides. These identified genes encode for secondary metabolites that are …

Development Of Small Ligands Targeting Pathogenic Rna Repeats In Neurodegenerative Diseases, Zhihua Chang
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Pathogenic microsatellite RNA expansions are toxic and can cause neuronal degeneration and dysfunction. Therapeutics that eliminate or neutralize these RNA repeats hold great promise for the treatment of many neurodegenerative diseases because they are uniformly fatal but there is no effective treatment available today. New compounds targeting these pathogenic RNA repeat sequences represent new hope to treat these diseases. The overall goal of my dissertation is to develop a high-throughput screening assay to identify small ligands as potential drug candidates against disease-associated RNA repeats and probe binding mechanisms to guide the design of optimized drug candidates, and eventually validate therapeutic …

Gemstone Identification By Raman Spectroscopy Combined With Chemometric Methods, Nontawat Sricharoen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Accurate and reliable gemstone classification is critical in gemology for authentication and identification purposes. A one-class classifier using self-organizing maps (SOMs), combined with Monte Carlo permutation testing, was successfully developed for gemstone classification based on Raman spectroscopy data. The developed SOM model was optimized by adjusting the map size and training iteration counts, and Monte Carlo permutation tests were conducted to evaluate prediction score through empirical p-values by generating random permutations of the data, allowing for a statistically robust assessment of classification reliability. Using the Raman spectra of RRUFF database and certain garnet gemstones, the model demonstrated high classification accuracy …

Computational Fluid Dynamics And Artificial Neural Network Based Modeling Of Microplastics Seperation Using Hydrocyclone, Dulyapat Thiemsakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Microplastics represent a considerable environmental hazard, particularly to aquatic ecosystems. These particles can adversely impact marine organisms and infiltrate the food chain, potentially posing risks to human health. Due to their small size and ubiquitous distribution, the removal of microplastics from water presents a significant technical challenge. This study focuses on the separation of microplastics using hydrocyclones. A three-dimensional Eulerian–Eulerian computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was used to investigate this process. The model showed strong agreement with experimental data in terms of pressure drop, water split, and axial velocity, confirming the reliability of the simulation results. In this work, design …

In this work, the hydrogen adsorption capabilities of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanomaterials in nanotube and nanosheet forms, decorated with selected elements from period 3 (Al, Si, P, and S) and period 4 (Ga, Ge, As, and Se), were investigated using periodic density functional theory (DFT) at the PBEPBE/6-31G(d) level. The results demonstrate that elemental decoration significantly enhances the hydrogen adsorption performance of both structural configurations. Among the heptazine-based nanotubes (hg−C3N4−NTs), the S-decorated (4,0) hg−C3N4−NT exhibited the most favorable physisorption, with an adsorption energy of −1.34 eV, while Al-decorated (5,0) and (6,0) hg−C3N4−NTs demonstrated strong chemisorption energies of −1.28 eV. …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The novel combination of strong Brønsted acidity (B) from propyl sulfonic acid functionalized on H-Y zeolite (HY-PrSO3H) and a series of Lewis acidic (L) catalysts (SnO2, ZrO2, Cr2O3) demonstrated high potential as a catalyst for alkyl levulinate (AL) production from glucose, fructose, sucrose, cellulose, and empty palm fruit bunch (EFB) as agricultural waste. Unmodified zeolite was insufficient to provide the required Brønsted and Lewis acid sites necessary for enhancing AL yield. The catalytic solvothermal process was evaluated by studying the effects of various parameters on AL yield. The optimal catalyst for AL formation was achieved by combining the Faujasite (FAU) …

Lung cancer has unavoidably encountered the most substantial fatality rate in recent years worldwide. The development of efficient and accessible diagnostic methods is required to assess disease severity. Prior studies have discovered the highest levels of long-chain aldehyde compounds particularly octanal (C8), nonanal (C9), and L-glutathione (L-GSH) as potential biomarkers for lung cancer. Herein, the novel artificial fluorescence sensor HNP5A containing bis-hydrazine naphthalimide decorated pillar[5]arene and 1,2-bis(6-bromohexyl)disulfane (BS) containing a disulfide part linked to a terminal bromoalkane were designed for two conceptual approaches. The first concept, sensor HNP5A has been accomplished for sensitive and selective detection of long-chain aldehydes. This …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Bacterial cellulose-based carbon/TPU (BC-C/TPU) electric heating pads were prepared and properties evaluated. Firstly, humic acid dyed BC was carbonized at 900 °C for 2 h to obtain BC-C which subsequently was underwent size reduction and H2SO4 treatment process to obtain fine sulphonated carbon particles (BC-C-SO₃⁻) with good dispersibility in hydrophilic medium. To improve its compatibility with hydrophobic TPU, complexation with cationic surfactant (CTAB) was carried out to obtain BC-C-SO₃⁻+CTAB complex. Then, a flexible BC-C-SO₃⁻+CTAB/TPU heating pad containing up to 14, 25 and 33 wt% BC-C-SO₃⁻+CTAB/TPU was preparable using solvent casting technique. The electrothermal performance was evaluated by applying voltages of …
