Investigation Of Structure And Dynamics Of Deep Eutectic Solvent Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Yaowen Cui Jun 2018

Investigation Of Structure And Dynamics Of Deep Eutectic Solvent Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Yaowen Cui

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) are liquid mixtures prepared from solids. As a new class of green solvents, DES not only share many properties with ionic liquids, such as low volatility, conductivity, tailorable constituents, but also have some advantages over ionic liquids, like easier preparation, safe and inexpensive materials, biodegradability, low toxicity, and excellent solubility. Because of those attractive properties, DES has been studied in many scientific and engineering fields. However, compared with the great number of studies of the application, many questions about structure and dynamics of DES are unanswered. To shed light on the mystery of solvent or solvation …

N-Glycosylation In The Protease Domain Of Trypsin-Like Serine Proteases Mediates Calnexin-Assisted Protein Folding, Hao Wang, Shuo Li, Juejin Wang, Shenghan Chen, Xue-Long Sun, Qingyu Wu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Trypsin-like serine proteases are essential in physiological processes. Studies have shown that N-glycans are important for serine protease expression and secretion, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we report a common mechanism of N-glycosylation in the protease domains of corin, enteropeptidase and prothrombin in calnexin-mediated glycoprotein folding and extracellular expression. This mechanism, which is independent of calreticulin and operates in a domain-autonomous manner, involves two steps: direct calnexin binding to target proteins and subsequent calnexin binding to monoglucosylated N-glycans. Elimination of N-glycosylation sites in the protease domains of corin, enteropeptidase and prothrombin inhibits corin and enteropeptidase cell surface …

Comparison Between Tetrel Bonded Complexes Stabilized By Σ And Π Hole Interactions, Wiktor Zierkiewicz, Mariusz Michalczyk, Steve Scheiner Jun 2018

Comparison Between Tetrel Bonded Complexes Stabilized By Σ And Π Hole Interactions, Wiktor Zierkiewicz, Mariusz Michalczyk, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The σ-hole tetrel bonds formed by a tetravalent molecule are compared with those involving a π-hole above the tetrel atom in a trivalent bonding situation. The former are modeled by TH4, TH3F, and TH2F2 (T = Si, Ge, Sn) and the latter by TH2=CH2, THF=CH2, and TF2=CH2, all paired with NH3 as Lewis base. The latter π-bonded complexes are considerably more strongly bound, despite the near equivalence of the σ and π-hole intensities. The larger binding energies of the π-dimers are attributed to greater electrostatic attraction and orbital interaction. Each progressive replacement of H by F increases the strength of …

Heavy Metal Accumulation In Seagrasses In Southeastern Florida, Erin Smith Jun 2018

Heavy Metal Accumulation In Seagrasses In Southeastern Florida, Erin Smith

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Seagrass beds are among the most ecologically important systems in the marine environment. They provide the primary production to nearby coral reef and mangrove communities, and seagrasses comprise a large component of the diets of many marine organisms including fishes, small invertebrate species, and many protected species such as manatees and sea turtles. This consumption provides a pathway for many contaminants to enter the marine food web via the seagrasses. The coastal location of seagrass beds causes them to be especially susceptible to anthropogenic pollution, including accumulation of heavy metals, which has been shown to have many adverse health effects …

Oxidation Of N-Doped Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes And Formation Of Discontinuous Spiraled Carbon Nanoribbons, Aman Preet Kaur, Mark S. Meier, Rodney Andrews, Dali Qian

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The effects of five commonly used wet chemical oxidations were studied for the extent of oxidation of graphitized nitrogen-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (N-MWCNTs). KMnO4/ H2SO4 was the most potent oxidant, as it produced the highest fraction of oxygen-containing functional groups. Electron microscopy studies showed that the treatment of annealed N-MWCNTs (G-N-MWCNTs) with H2SO4/HNO3 and H2SO4/KMnO4 mixtures leads to interesting spiraled ribbon textures. A structural model, involving the stacking of coiled subunits to form a discontinuous carbon nanoribbon rather than a continuous ribbon is proposed to …

Effects Of Dispersion Corrections And Nonlocality On Density Functional Predictions Of Pressure-Induced Polymorphic Transitions Of Crystalline Diborane, Angela M. Murcia Rios, Darya N. Komsa, Viktor N. Staroverov Jun 2018

Effects Of Dispersion Corrections And Nonlocality On Density Functional Predictions Of Pressure-Induced Polymorphic Transitions Of Crystalline Diborane, Angela M. Murcia Rios, Darya N. Komsa, Viktor N. Staroverov

Chemistry Publications

The role of dispersion interactions in density functional calculations of the relative enthalpies of compressed BH3 polymorphs was investigated using plane-wave and Gaussian basis set codes. Addition of semiempirical atom-pairwise dispersion corrections to generalized gradient approximations (GGAs) was found to have little effect on the relative enthalpies of various boron hydride structures. By contrast, the stability ranking obtained with the nonlocal van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) of Dion and co-workers was substantially more realistic than the rankings predicted by plain and dispersion-corrected GGAs. Of the functionals tested, only vdW-DF correctly predicts that compressed diborane does not leave the B2H6 …

Formazanate Complexes Of Hypervalent Group‐14 Elements As Precursors To Electronically Stabilized Radicals, Ryan R. Maar, Sara D. Catingan, Viktor N. Staroverov, Joe Gilroy Jun 2018

Formazanate Complexes Of Hypervalent Group‐14 Elements As Precursors To Electronically Stabilized Radicals, Ryan R. Maar, Sara D. Catingan, Viktor N. Staroverov, Joe Gilroy

Chemistry Publications

The stability of molecular radicals containing main‐group elements usually hinges on the presence of bulky substituents that shield the reactive radical center. We describe a family of group‐14 formazanate complexes whose chemical reduction allows access to radicals that are stabilized instead by geometric and electron‐delocalization effects, specifically by the square‐pyramidal geometry adopted by the group‐14 atom (Si, Ge, Sn) within the framework of the heteroatom‐rich formazanate ligands. The reduction potentials of the Si, Ge, and Sn complexes as determined by cyclic voltammetry become more negative in that order. Examination of the solid‐state structures of these complexes suggested that their electron‐accepting …

A Study Of Fragmentation And Spontaneous Covalent Self-Assembly Of The Azaorcus Ribozyme From Multiple Small Inactive Rna Fragments, Tharuka Sewwandi Jayathilaka

Dissertations and Theses

The question about the origins of life often appears as a difficult question to answer. A more reliable candidate molecule for the chemical origins of life would be a molecule that is capable of making copies of itself from simple precursors. With the finding of the catalytic activities of RNA molecules by Thomas Cech and Sid Altman in late 1980s, the term ribozyme was introduced to define an RNA molecule with catalytic activity. The RNA World is a conceptual period in the early stages in the development of life because RNA simultaneously possesses evolvability and catalytic function. An RNA molecule …

A Multi-Size Study Of Gold Nanoparticle Degradation And Reformation In Ceramic Glazes, Nathan Nl. Dinh, Luke T. Dipasquale, Michael C. Leopold, Ryan H. Coppage

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Most traditional ceramic glazes employ high amounts of transition metal colorants that are toxic to the environment and can cause health issues in humans through surface leaching. Gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) have been found to be environmentally friendly and non-toxic alternative metal colorant in ceramic glazes. The plasmon band observed with Au-NPs can result in vibrant solutions by manipulating NP size, shape, and concentration; however, the effects of traditional firing in both reductive and oxidative kilns on Au-NPs are poorly understood. Aside from ancient art processes whose mechanisms have not been fully explored, the use of Au-NPs as suspended ceramic glaze …

Publications and Research

A homologous series of electronically tuned 2,20,200-nitrilotris(N-arylacetamide) pre-ligands (H3LR) were prepared (R ¼ NO2, CN, CF3, F, Cl, Br, Et, Me, H, OMe, NMe2) and some of their corresponding Fe and Zn species synthesized. The iron complexes react rapidly with O2, the final products of which are diferric mu-oxo bridged species. The crystal structure of the oxidized product obtained from DMA solutions contain a structural motif found in some diiron proteins. The mechanism of iron mediated O2 reduction was explored to the extent that allowed us to construct an empirically consistent rate law. A Hammett plot was constructed that enabled …

Microwave Popped Co(Ii)-Graphene Oxide Hybrid: Bifunctional Catalyst For Hydrogen Evolution Reaction And Hydrogen Storage, Lin Wei, Karen Lozano, Yuanbing Mao

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

In an effort to develop a multifunctional catalyst for hydrogen generation and adsorption applications, a facile and cost-effective microwave popping method was used to synthesize popped graphene oxide (PGO) and Co-PGO hybrid. Both samples have been explored and compared as hydrogen storage materials and as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) for the first time. The loading of Co(II) species on the surface of the PGO enhanced the hydrogen storage capability of PGO from 0.04wt% to 0.08wt% as measured at 293K and 800 mmHg. Co-PGO is also acting as a better electrocatalyst for HER compared to the PGO counterpart.

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

We report the synthesis of a gallium complex incorporating redox-active pyridyl nitroxide ligands. The (pyNO−)2GaCl complex was prepared in 85% yield via a salt metathesis route and was characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, and theory. UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy and electrochemistry were used to access the optical and electrochemical properties of the complex, respectively. Our discussion focuses primarily on a comparison of the gallium complex to the corresponding aluminum derivative and shows that although the complexes are very similar, small differences in the electronic structure of the complexes can be correlated to the identity of the metal.

Quadruplexes In ‘Dicty’: Crystal Structure Of A Four-Quartet G-Quadruplex Formed By G-Rich Motif Found In The Dictyostelium Discoideum Genome, A. Guédin, Linda Yingqi Lin , '20, S. Armane, L. Lacroix, J.-L. Mergny, S. Thore, Liliya A. Yatsunyk Jun 2018

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Guanine-rich DNA has the potential to fold into non-canonical G-quadruplex (G4) structures. Analysis of the genome of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum indicates a low number of sequences with G4-forming potential (249–1055). Therefore, D. discoideum is a perfect model organism to investigate the relationship between the presence of G4s and their biological functions. As a first step in this investigation, we crystallized the dGGGGGAGGGGTACAGGGGTACAGGGG sequence from the putative promoter region of two divergent genes in D. discoideum. According to the crystal structure, this sequence folds into a four-quartet intramolecular antiparallel G4 with two lateral and one diagonal loops. The G-quadruplex …

Facially Amphiphilic Polyionene Biocidal Polymers Derived From Lithocholic Acid, Mitra S. Ganewatta, Md Anisur Rahman, Louis Mercado, Tinom Shokfai, Alan W. Decho, Theresa M. Reineke, Chuanbing Tang

Faculty Publications

Bacterial infections have become a global issue that requires urgent attention, particularly regarding to emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria. We developed quaternary amine-containing antimicrobial poly(bile acid)s that contain a hydrophobic core of lithocholic acid in the main-chain. Interestingly, by choosing appropriate monomers, these cationic polymers can form core-shell micelles. These polymers exhibited biocidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species. It is demonstrated that the micelles can deliver hydrophobic antibiotics that functionally have dual antimicrobial activities. Cytotoxicity assays against HeLa cells showed dosage-dependent toxicity for polymers with longer linkers.

Solution And Solid-State Characterization Of Zn(Ii) Complexes Containing A New Tridentate N2S Ligand, Valerie Tran, Kate E. Allen, Martin Garcia Chavez, Christopher Aaron, Joseph J. Dumais, John T. York, Eric C. Brown

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

A new N2S ligand bis(pyridyl)(2-mercapto-1-methylimidazolyl)methane (2, Py2MeImS) has been synthesized and characterized. Treatment of this ligand with bromide and triflate salts of Zn(II) results in the complexes (Py2MeImS)ZnBr2 (3) and [(Py2MeImS)2Zn](OTf)2 (4), respectively. The solid-state structure of (Py2MeImS)ZnBr2 shows bidentate N,N-coordination of Py2MeImS to the zinc ion, with the sulfur atom of the 2-mercaptoimidazole moiety uncoordinated. Two conformers of 3 rapidly interconvert in solution at room temperature, and variable temperature NMR studies and DFT calculations were used …

Scalable, low-density and flexible aerogels offer a unique combination of excellent mechanical properties and scalable manufacturability. Herein, we report the fabrication of a family of low-density, ambient-dried and hydrophobic poly(isocyanurate-urethane) aerogels derived from a triisocyanate precursor. The bulk densities ranged from 0.28 to 0.37 g cm-3 with porosities above 70% v/v. The aerogels exhibit a highly stretchable behavior with a rapid increase in the Young's modulus with bulk density (slope of log-log plot > 6.0). In addition, the aerogels are very compressible (more than 80% compressive strain) with high shape recovery rate (more than 80% recovery in 30 s). Under …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescent Nanojars, Vageesha Warnajith Liyana Gunawardana Jun 2018

Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescent Nanojars, Vageesha Warnajith Liyana Gunawardana

Masters Theses

Self-assembly is a powerful tool utilized by synthetic chemists to create large, intricate structures for a variety of applications such as drug delivery, adaptable materials and electronics. In contrast to stepwise synthesis, this process allows the formation of intricate molecular architectures starting from synthetically rudimentary building blocks. Nanojars are class of self-assembling, cyclic copper(II) pyrazolate coordination compounds that encapsulate oxoanions with negative two or three charge. The strong anion binding characteristics of nanojars have potential towards developing novel tools for detecting biologically and environmentally relevant anions such as carbonate, sulfate and phosphate.

This work addresses the design and synthesis of …

Deconvoluting The Effects Of Surface Chemistry And Nanoscale Topography: Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Nucleation On Si-Based Substrates, Jing Zhang, Jingling Huang, Carmen Say, Robert L. Dorit, Kate Queeney

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Hypothesis

The nucleation of biofilms is known to be affected by both the chemistry and topography of the underlying substrate, particularly when topography includes nanoscale (nm) features. However, determining the role of topography vs. chemistry is complicated by concomitant variation in both as a result of typical surface modification techniques. Analyzing the behavior of biofilm-forming bacteria exposed to surfaces with systematic, independent variation of both topography and surface chemistry should allow differentiation of the two effects.

Experiments

Silicon surfaces with reproducible nanotopography were created by anisotropic etching in deoxygenated water. Surface chemistry was varied independently to create hydrophilic (OH- terminated) …

An Improved Method For The Analysis Of Fiber Evidence Using Polarized Light Microscopy, Samuel F. Kaplan Jun 2018

An Improved Method For The Analysis Of Fiber Evidence Using Polarized Light Microscopy, Samuel F. Kaplan

Student Theses

Using the basic fundamentals of polarized light microscopy, a new and improved method for identifying synthetic fibers is presented in this thesis. Using the equation of an ellipse in spherical coordinates, an EXCEL™ (Microsoft Inc., Seattle, WA) spreadsheet was developed that generated tables of data that provide a foundation for a new and more efficient method in fiber analysis. Intermediate refractive index values for each subclass of textile fibers were calculated based on the fiber's principal refractive index values. The angles of refractive index matching to known refractive index fluids vary from 0 to 90 degrees upon rotation of the …

Singlet fission is a process that splits collective excitations, or excitons, into two with unity efficiency. This exciton splitting process, unique to molecular photophysics, has the potential to considerably improve the efficiency of optoelectronic devices through more efficient light harvesting. While the first step of singlet fission has been characterized in great detail, subsequent steps critical to achieving overall highly-efficient singlet-to-triplet conversion are only just beginning to become well understood. One of the most elementary suggestions, which has yet to be tested, is that an appropriately balanced coupling is necessary to ensure overall highly efficient singlet fission; that is, the …
