National and local initiatives focused on the transformation of STEM teaching in higher education have multiplied over the last decade. These initiatives often focus on measuring change in instructional practices, but it is difficult to monitor such change without a national picture of STEM educational practices, especially as characterized by common observational instruments. We characterized a snapshot of this landscape by conducting the first large scale observation-based study. We found that lecturing was prominent throughout the undergraduate STEM curriculum, even in classrooms with infrastructure designed to support active learning, indicating that further work is required to reform STEM education. Additionally, …

Reductive Cleavage Of Organic Peroxides By Iron Salts And Thiols, Anderw Olson, Abigail J. Jameson, Shiva K. Kyasa, Boone W. Evans, Patrick H. Dussault

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Despite the low bond strength of the oxygen− oxygen bond, organic peroxides are often surprisingly resistant to cleavage by nucleophiles and reductants. As a result, achieving decomposition under mild conditions can be challenging. Herein, we explore the reactivity of a selection of peroxides toward thiolates, phenyl selenide, Fe(II) salts, and iron thiolates. Peroxides activated by conjugation, strain, or stereoelectronics are rapidly cleaved at room temperature by thiolate anions, phenylselenide, or Fe(II) salts. Under the same conditions, unhindered dialkyl peroxides are only marginally reactive; hindered peroxides, including triacetone triperoxide and diacetone diperoxide (DADP), are inert. In contrast, all but the most …

The Secant Rate Of Corrosion: Correlating Observations Of The Uss Arizona Submerged In Pearl Harbor, Donald L. Johnson, Robert J. Deangelis, Dana J. Medlin, Jon E. Johnson, James D. Carr, David L. Conlin Jan 2018

The Secant Rate Of Corrosion: Correlating Observations Of The Uss Arizona Submerged In Pearl Harbor, Donald L. Johnson, Robert J. Deangelis, Dana J. Medlin, Jon E. Johnson, James D. Carr, David L. Conlin

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Contrary to previous linear projections of steel corrosion in seawater, analysis of an inert marker embedded in USS Arizona concretion since the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor reveals evidence that the effective corrosion rate decreases with time. The secant rate of corrosion, or SRC correlation, derived from this discovery could have a significant impact on failure analysis investigations for concreted shipwrecks or underwater structures. The correlation yields a lower rate of metal thinning than predicted. Development of the correlation is described.

Microstructural Changes To Proso Millet Protein Bodies Upon Cooking And Digestion, Paridhi Gulati, You Zhou, Christian Elowsky, Devin J. Rose Jan 2018

Microstructural Changes To Proso Millet Protein Bodies Upon Cooking And Digestion, Paridhi Gulati, You Zhou, Christian Elowsky, Devin J. Rose

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Cooking results in a drastic decline in digestibility of proso millet proteins, panicins. Scanning electron and confocal microscopy were used to observe morphological changes in proso millet protein bodies upon cooking and digestion that could be associated with the loss in digestibility. Spherical protein bodies (1–2.5 mm) were observed in proso millet flour and extracted protein. Cooking did not result in any noticeable change in the size or shape of the protein bodies. However, upon digestion with pepsin the poor digestibility of cooked proso millet protein was clearly evident from the differences in microstructure of the protein bodies: large cavities …

Free-Base Nicotine Determination In Electronic Cigarette Liquids By 1H Nmr Spectroscopy, Anna K. Duell, James F. Pankow, David H. Peyton Jan 2018

Free-Base Nicotine Determination In Electronic Cigarette Liquids By 1H Nmr Spectroscopy, Anna K. Duell, James F. Pankow, David H. Peyton

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

E-liquids usually contain significant nicotine, which will exist primarily in two forms, monoprotonated and free-base, the proportions of which are alterable through the effective pH of the medium. The fraction of nicotine in the free-base form is αfb, with 0 ≤ αfb ≤ 1. When dosed via aerosol, the two nicotine forms have different mechanisms and kinetics of delivery, as well as differing implications for harshness of the inhaled aerosol, so αfb is relevant regarding abuse liability. Previous attempts to determine αfb in electronic cigarette liquids and vapor have been flawed. We employed the exchange-averaged …

Facile Synthesis Of Ligand-Free Iridium Nanoparticles And Their In Vitro Biocompatibility, Anna L. Brown, Hayden Winter, Andrea M. Goforth, Gaurav Sahay, Conroy Sun

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

High-density inorganic nanoparticles have shown promise in medical applications that utilize radiation including X-ray imaging and as radiation dose enhancers for radiotherapy. We have developed an aqueous synthetic method to produce small (~ 2 nm) iridium nanoparticles (IrNPs) by reduction of iridium(III) chloride using a borohydride reducing agent. Unlike other solution-based synthesis methods, uniform and monodispersed IrNPs are produced without the use of surfactants or other solubilizing ligands. These nanoparticles are highly crystalline as observed by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In vitro metabolic toxicity assays using hepatocyte and macrophage cells demonstrate that both IrNPs and iridium(III) …

Preparation Of Polyurethane And Polyisocyanurate Foams Catalyzed By Metal Acetate-Ammonia Complexes, Benjatham Sukkaneewat Jan 2018

Preparation Of Polyurethane And Polyisocyanurate Foams Catalyzed By Metal Acetate-Ammonia Complexes, Benjatham Sukkaneewat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Metal acetate-ammonia complex solutions, namely Cu(Amm) and Zn(Amm), were synthesized and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Cu(Amm) and Zn(Amm) were used as homogeneous catalysts for accelerating gelling (urethane formation) and blowing reactions (CO2 generation) of rigid polyurethane (RPUR) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foams. Potassium octoate solution in diethylene glycol, which was used as a trimerization catalyst, was mixed with Cu(Amm) or Zn(Amm) to give a catalyst mixture which can catalyze gelling, blowing and trimerization reactions for the preparation of PIR foams. The catalytic activity of Cu(Amm) and Zn(Amm) in gelling and blowing reactions was compared to that of …

Pdms-Silver Nanocomposite For Bendable And Stretchable Conductive Stripes, Porapak Suriya Jan 2018

Pdms-Silver Nanocomposite For Bendable And Stretchable Conductive Stripes, Porapak Suriya

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In this research, a simple and low-cost protocol for fabricating PDMS-silver composite as flexible conductive polymer is presented. Rod-shaped silver acetate (RS-AcOAg) was synthesized and fabricated into a solvent-cast RS-AcOAg film. The film was thermally decomposed into porous silver structures at 300ºC. The thermal decomposition of RS-AcOAg film induced the formation of silver microparticles (AgNPs) on the surface of RS-AcOAg with the expense of RS-AcOAg rod. AgNPs sintered into bigger particles and turned RS-AcOAg film into porous silver film consisting of interconnected quasi-sphere silver microparticles (AgMPs). The sintered structures transformed porous silver into rigid structures and affected the electrical resistivity …

Physical Properties Of Propylene/Propane Mixtures In Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks By Dftb And Molecular Dynamics Simulation, Benjawan Kaewruksa

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are fascinating porous materials which were widely utilized for gas adsorptions, separation and storage due to its high thermal and chemical stability. In this work, adsorptions of propane and propylene in ZIF−8 and ZIF−67 pores were studied under the periodic boundary condition based on the SCC−DFTB method. Six and eleven adsorption configurations of propane and propylene molecules can be observed in the ZIF−8 pore, whereas only four adsorption configurations in the ZIF−67 pore were found. Based on the most stable configurations, the adsorption energies of propane both ZIF−8 pore and ZIF−67 pore are lower than propylene. …

Fluorescent Probes For Detection Of Aldehyde Compounds, Piyanan Pranee

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Long-chain aldehyde compounds such as hexanal, heptanal, octanal and nonanal are regarded as potential biomarkers of many lung cancer disease and served as the important quality indicators of fat and oil products. As advantage of the hydrophobic tails of hydrocarbon chain and hydrophilic head of aldehyde, we expected that long-chained aldehydes might act as the induced-fit surfactants to form the completely self-assembling organized nanomicelle. In this research, the nanomicellar probes for specific long-chain aldehyde compounds have been achieved in the challenge concept such that among aldehydes especially long-chain aldehyde compounds, would react with Naph-NH2 to form complete micelle-like particles via …

Styryl-Bodipy Fluorescent Sensors For Reactive Oxygen Species Detection In Cells, Suthikorn Jantra Jan 2018

Styryl-Bodipy Fluorescent Sensors For Reactive Oxygen Species Detection In Cells, Suthikorn Jantra

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Fluorescent probes are great tools for visualization and imaging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in living cells. Although several probes perform well with green emission, however, to maximize light penetration for tissue imaging and minimize interference from auto-fluorescence, a probe with longer wavelength is desirable. In this study, three new boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based fluorescent probes SB1, SB2 and SB4 have been developed for detection of ROS. Each probe has two styryl groups anchored to the BODIPY pyrrole rings to extend the emission wavelength into the red region (634–662 nm). Among them, we found that SB2 containing electron-rich p-hydroxyl styryl groups …

Oxidized Carbon Particles From Styrene, Titiporn Sansureerungsikul

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

It has been reported the spherical shape of oxidized carbon nanoparticulates shows higher ability to penetrate phospholipid bilayer membrane than tubular and sheet shapes. However, the effect of the particle size on this membrane penetration ability have never been investigated. In this work, we synthesized various sizes of oxidized carbon spheres through a four steps process. Firstly, we adjusted the surfactants and styrene concentrations to prepare polystyrene of various sizes. Then, the polystyrene particles of selected sizes were hypercrosslinked via Frieldel-Craft alkylation reaction. After that, hypercrosslinked polystyreneparticles were pyrolyzed under N2 atmosphere to obtain carbon nanospheres of various sizes. The …

Molecular Dynamic Simulations On Inclusion Complexes Of Alpha-Mangostin With Beta-Cyclodextrin And Derivatives In Phospholipid Bilayer, Wiparat Hotarat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Alpha-mangostin (MGS), a traditional Thai medicine, exhibits pharmacological activities such as anti-oxidant, anticancer, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the low solubility of MGS is the major problem for the use in pharmaceutical industry. To enhance the solubility of this compound, the encapsulation of MGS by the three types of cyclodextrin including beta-cyclodextrin (BCD) 2,6-dimethyl-b-cyclodextrin (DMBCD) as well as 2-hydroxypropyl-b-cyclodextrin (HPBCD) was investigated. Based on molecular dynamic (MD) simulations, the results show the existence of several association complexes where the interaction of MGS on exterior CDs prior to a formation of inclusion complex. The van der Waals interaction (vdW) is the …

Analysis Of Vibrational Modes Of Chemically Modified Tone Wood, Madison Flesch Jan 2018

Analysis Of Vibrational Modes Of Chemically Modified Tone Wood, Madison Flesch

Honors Program Theses

It is generally accepted that every violin has different tone quality in terms of intonation and the depth of the harmonics produced. The best violins are made by experienced luthiers that craft each with precision to produce the best possible tonal quality. The quality of the finished violin is dependent upon both the specific shape and the vibrational response of the wood used in its construction. Because the hard wood used in violin construction is inhomogeneous, the composition and structure of material used is critical to the final product.1 Luthiers would initially rely on their experience to feel the …

Faculty Papers and Publications

There are few reports that describe crystal structures of compounds containing cobalt complexed to either dimethyl sulfoxide (Me2SO) or quinoline (C9H7N). The title compound, [Co(C2H6OS)6][CoCl3(C9H7N)]2, is a cobalt salt in which the metal ion is complexed to both Me2SO and quinoline. In particular, we observed that anhydrous cobalt(II) chloride reacts with quinoline in Me2SO to form a salt that is to be formulated as [CoII(Me2SO)6]2+{[CoIICl3quinoline]2 ‾ }. …

Correlation Of Aqueous Solubility And Anti-Cancer Activity Of Novel Triazolium And Imidazolium Salts, Jared J. Bies

Theses and Dissertations

Novel triazolium, imidazolium, and benzimidazolium salts are known to possess anti-cancer properties and have potential as cancer therapeutics. This thesis describes the aqueous solubility and the differential activity of N,AT-bis-substituted-l,2,4-triazolium bromide salts and N/N'-bis(naphthylmethyl)imidazolium bromide salts against MDA-MB-468 breast cancer cells and PC-3 prostate carcinomas. Using a microscale technique, the partition coefficient (log P) of each salt was determined. The log P value was explored to determine the bioavailability of each derivative.

The Study Of The Degradation Of Hexabromocyclododecane In A Heterogeneous System Containing Fe(Ii) Adsorbed To The Iron Oxide Hematite., Kristian K. Roopnarine Jan 2018

The Study Of The Degradation Of Hexabromocyclododecane In A Heterogeneous System Containing Fe(Ii) Adsorbed To The Iron Oxide Hematite., Kristian K. Roopnarine

Dissertations and Theses

The reaction of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD), a widely used brominated flame retardant, was studied in a heterogenous mixture containing reactive Fe(II) adsorbed to the iron oxide hematite. The adsorbed Fe(II)/iron oxide system has shown to be a potent reductant in the transformation of organic contaminants with relatively water soluble organic contaminants. There currently aren’t many studies involving hydrophobic organic contaminants, such as HBCDD, in this reducing Fe(II)/iron oxide system. The results indicate that across the pHs 6.86, 6.95, 7.15 and 7.35 γ and β-HBCDD are degraded within a couple days. The pseudo-first order rate constants at pH 6.95 are 0.049 hr …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Platinum Ligand Complex ((Κ-N,C,N- 2,6-Bis(Diethylaminomethyl)Phenyl)(4- Tert-Butylphenyl) Platinum(Ii)), Carly Roleder Jan 2018

Synthesis And Characterization Of A Novel Platinum Ligand Complex ((Κ-N,C,N- 2,6-Bis(Diethylaminomethyl)Phenyl)(4- Tert-Butylphenyl) Platinum(Ii)), Carly Roleder

CMC Senior Theses

A novel platinum ligand complex (NCN)PtAr, ((κ-N,C,N- 2,6-bis (diethylaminomethyl)phenyl)(4- tert-butylphenyl) platinum(II)), was synthesized. A reaction of 1-Bromo-4-tert-butylbenzene Grignard with (NCN)PtCl, (where NCN = 2,6-bis(diethylaminomethyl)phenyl) yielded the (NCN)PtAr (where Ar = 4-tert-butylphenyl). The product was then characterized with NMR spectra through 1H NMR, 13C NMR, COSY, HSQC, and HMBC to verify it structure.

Cellulose Modification For Use As Reinforcement In Bio-Based Composites, Ashley L. Rudolph Jan 2018

Cellulose Modification For Use As Reinforcement In Bio-Based Composites, Ashley L. Rudolph

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The goal of the research contained in this thesis is to provide an alternative method of developing polymers than the current petroleum-based polymeric products. Vegetable oil-based polymers are a popular alternative due to their low-cost and low toxicity. The carbon-carbon double bonds in the oil are ideal reactive sites for a free radical polymerization. Cellulose is a naturally occurring polymer. Modifying cellulose prior to making composites with tung oil allows a hydrophilic material to mix better with a hydrophobic resin. Vegetable oil-based polymers usually require the reinforcement of fibers to enhance the thermo-mechanical properties that would replace petroleum-based polymers. In …

Metalloglycomics: Investigating The Interactions Of Metal Complexes With Heparan Mimetics, Wyatt Johnson Jan 2018

Metalloglycomics: Investigating The Interactions Of Metal Complexes With Heparan Mimetics, Wyatt Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Proteoglycans containing Heparan Sulfate (HS), a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG), play a major role in the cell signaling process, interacting with many different proteins. HS is over expressed on the surface of many cancer cells. Enzymatic cleavage of HS-GAGs by heparanase causes release of angiogenic growth factors leading to tumor cell migration. Heparanase is also over-expressed in tumors with significant correlation between metastatic potential and heparanase activity. Proteoglycans and their associated enzymes are thus significant drug targets of high biological relevance.

A functional consequence of strong PPC-HS binding has been shown in proof-of-concept studies confirming inhibition of the model pentasaccharide, Fondaparinux, …

The universal N(6)-threonylcarbamoyladenosine (t6A) modification at position 37 of ANN-decoding tRNAs is central to translational fidelity. In bacteria, t6A biosynthesis is catalyzed by the proteins TsaB, TsaC/TsaC2, TsaD and TsaE. Despite intense research, the molecular mechanisms underlying t6A biosynthesis are poorly understood. Here, we report biochemical and biophysical studies of the t6A biosynthesis system from Thermotoga maritima. Small angle X-ray scattering analysis reveals a symmetric 2:2 stoichiometric complex of TsaB and TsaD (TsaB2D2), as well as 2:2:2 complex (TsaB2D2E2), in …

Nickel-Catalyzed Oxidative Decarboxylative (Hetero)Arylation Reactions, Aaron P. Honeycutt Jan 2018

Nickel-Catalyzed Oxidative Decarboxylative (Hetero)Arylation Reactions, Aaron P. Honeycutt

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Transition-metal-catalyzed decarboxylative coupling reactions have gained considerable attention over the past decade as an efficient route to form heterobiaryls. However, current methods for oxidative decarboxylative (hetero)arylation with unactivated C-H bonds have been limited by poor substrate scope, control of regioselectivity, and chemospecificity. This thesis describes the development of a new nickel-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylative coupling (ODC) with unactivated C-H bonds. The first chapter discusses the development of the new nickel-catalyzed ODC reaction to enable the coupling of a N,N'-bidentate directing group with a broad scope of heteroaromatic carboxylates and ortho-substituted benzoates, a scope that has not been achieved in previous …
