Nonexistent Compounds As A Guide To Innovation, Dean F. Martin, Barbara B. Martin
Nonexistent Compounds As A Guide To Innovation, Dean F. Martin, Barbara B. Martin
Chemistry Faculty Publications
A study of nonexistent compounds can be a useful exercise in gaining insight into the factors that can inhibit innovation. Several reasons are suggested: lack of financial support, disinterest in preparing compounds that lack evident utility, notable synthetic challenges with inadequate rewards, inhibition by well-established contemporary knowledge, and invalid interpolations.
Influence Of The Sea Surface Microlayer On Ozone Deposition Velocity, Kathryn Moore
Influence Of The Sea Surface Microlayer On Ozone Deposition Velocity, Kathryn Moore
Honors Theses
The biogeochemical cycles of both iodine and ozone are strongly linked to human health and global climate and are tightly coupled through chemical processes occurring in the surface ocean and troposphere. The concentration and distribution of these compounds have the potential to drive the oxidizing capacity and suite of chemical reactions occurring in the marine boundary layer. However, modeling coupled ocean-atmosphere systems involving them is challenging because of a limited understanding of the magnitude and dominant mechanisms controlling the fluxes of both species, in addition to temporally and spatially heterogeneous distributions of ozone and iodine in the sea surface and …
Longitudinal Plasmonic Detection Of Glucose Using Gold Nanorods, Ching An Peng, Sushil Pachpinde
Longitudinal Plasmonic Detection Of Glucose Using Gold Nanorods, Ching An Peng, Sushil Pachpinde
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Gold nanorod-based affinity sensors were developed utilizing concanavalin-A/dextran/glucose chemistry to detect glucose. The gold nanorods, synthesized using the seed-mediated method, were first coated with dextran sulfate. The dextran sulfate coating changed the local refractive index, which was observed as a red shift in the longitudinal plasmon band. After the addition of 8 μM concanavalin-A, gold nanorod aggregates were formed as shown by TEM analysis. The corresponding UV-Vis spectrum peak wavelength showed a red shift from 701 nm of dextran sulfate coated gold nanorods to 718 nm of concanavalin-A promoted gold nanorod aggregates. The gold nanorod aggregates were dissociated when 12 …
Molecular Characterization And Photochemical Transformation Of Dissolved Organic Matter From Land To Ocean, Hongmei Chen
Molecular Characterization And Photochemical Transformation Of Dissolved Organic Matter From Land To Ocean, Hongmei Chen
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Molecular characterization and photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in both rivers and the ocean is the main research focus of this dissertation. Chemical characterization of DOM is hampered by the limited application of advanced techniques to desalt, concentrate, isolate and then molecularly characterize DOM. An affordable, commercially available mini-electrodialysis (mini-ED) system has been evaluated and recommended for the efficient desalting of small volume samples of seawater prior to analysis by electrospray Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FTICR-MS).
A high-recovery technique of DOM isolation – reverse osmosis coupled with electrodialysis (RO/ED) – was used to isolate …
Spectroscopic Characterization Of Dissolved Organic Matter: Insights Into The Linkage Between Sources And Chemical Composition, Xiaoyan Cao
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation investigated the chemical structure of DOM by advanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) techniques, as well as isotopic measurements and UV-visible spectroscopy, to shed light on the linkages between DOM sources and DOM composition. Unique and extensive sets of DOM samples studied here were isolated from various aquatic systems, covering end-member environments in which DOM is considered either microbially derived or terrestrially derived, and areas in which DOM has characteristics intermediate between the two end members. Important insights into specific site-related questions were also gained such as …

Advances In Understanding The Molecular Composition Of Dissolved Organic Matter And Its Reactivity In The Environment, Rajaa Mesfioui
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the ultimate product of Earth's systems dynamics. DOM chemical signature is strongly shaped by the interaction among Earth's spheres, such as the atmosphere, the geosphere, the biosphere, and the hydrosphere, but also life and human activity. DOM source, composition, photochemical alteration and availability affect freshwater ecosystems, their carbon and nitrogen fluxes and, thus, the global carbon and nitrogen cycles. The aim of this thesis was to gain an understanding of the molecular composition of DOM and its photochemical and biological reactivity in an environment impacted by anthropogenic disturbance. The York and James River systems within …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Sugar Based Low Molecular Weight Gelators And The Preparation Of Chiral Sulfinamides, Hari Prasad Reddy Mangunuru
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) have received considerable attention in the field of chemistry from last few decades. These compounds form self-assembled fibrous networks like micelles, cylindrical, sheets, fibers, layers and so on. The fibrous network entraps the solvent and forms gel, because of the self-assembly phenomenon and their demonstrated potential uses in a variety of areas, ranging from environmental to medicinal applications.
Sugars are good starting materials to synthesize the new class of LMWG's, because these are different from some expensive materials, these are natural products. We have synthesized and characterized the LMGS's based on D-glucose and D …

The long-term evolution of the vertical column abundance of carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) above the high-altitude Jungfraujoch station (Swiss Alps, 46.5 ° N, 8.0 ° E, 3580 ma.s.l.) has been derived from the spectrometric analysis of Fourier transform infrared solar spectra recorded at that site between 1989 and 2012. The investigation is based on a multi-microwindow approach, two encompassing pairs of absorption lines belonging to the R-branch of the strong ν3 band of CF4 centered at 1283 cm-1, and two additional ones to optimally account for weak but overlapping HNO3 interferences. The analysis reveals …

Quantitative Mass Spectrometric Investigations Of Protein Biomarkers: Serum Thymidine Kinase 1 And Human Osteopontin, Morse Faria
Theses and Dissertations
Mass spectrometry is being increasingly used in biomarker research mainly due to its ability to achieve high selectivity coupled with high sensitivity. This dissertation focuses on quantitative mass spectrometric investigations of two protein biomarkers i.e. serum thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) and human osteopontin (OPN).
First part of this research was focused on developing a liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for measuring the activity of TK1 in serum by monitoring the conversion of a TK1 specific exogenous substrate, 3’-deoxy-3’-fluorothymidine (FLT), to its mono-phosphorylated form 3’-deoxy-3’-fluorothymidine monophosphate (FLT-MP). A method to quantify FLT-MP on LC-MS/MS was developed and …
Exploring The Asymmetric Environment Of Various Chiral Catalysts Using A Modified Ion-Trap Mass Spectrometer: Towards The Development Of A Rapid Chiral Catalyst Screening Method, Cary M. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Since the tragedy of the drug Thalidomide® in the late 1950 to early 1960’s, chirality has been recognized as an important aspect that must be controlled in the drug development process in the pharmaceutical industry. Since then, there has been a considerable movement towards single enantiomer drugs. This demand has presented many challenges for the synthetic organic chemist. Chiral catalysts offer one solution to this problem, as they afford the unique ability to preferentially synthesize one enantiomer. Unfortunately, the design of new chiral catalysts is often empirical, with luck and trial and error necessary due to factors that govern enantioselectivity. …

Catalytic Activity Of Heteropoly Tungstophosphoric Acid Supported On Partially Reduced Graphene Oxide Prepared By Laser And Microwave Irradiation, Mark Paul Jimena Dailo
Theses and Dissertations
The solid acid catalyst of the Keggin-type 12-tungstophosphoric acid (H3PW12O40, HPW) is supported on partially reduced graphene oxide (PRGO) nanosheets for acid-catalyzed reactions. HPW is a new class of catalyst with a good thermal stability and high Bronsted acidity in order to replace common mineral acids. However, it has low specific surface area (1-5 m2/g). Therefore, the possibility of PRGO as a catalytic support for HPW is investigated due to its high surface area (2630 m2/g) and good thermal stability. The synthesis of HPW-GO catalyst is prepared using microwave and …

Immobilized metal chelate affinity chromatography (IMAC) support was practiced for \alpha-amylase immobilization. Poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate-methacryloylamidotryptophan)-Ni^{2+} [p(HEMA-MAT)-Ni^{2+}] nanospheres, average diameter 100 nm, were produced by surfactant free emulsion polymerization. Characterizations of p(HEMA-MAT)-Ni^{2+} nanospheres were carried out by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope (SEM). In addition, average particle size, size distribution, and surface charge were specified. The amount of N-methacryloylamidotryptophan (MAT) incorporated to polymer was determined as 1.95 mmol/g polymers by using nitrogen stoichiometry. The specific surface areas of poly(hydroxyethylmethacrylate) [p(HEMA)] and p(HEMA-MAT) nanospheres were calculated as 1856 m^2/g and 1914 m^2/g, respectively. Protein adsorption increased with increasing initial protein …
Synthesis, Spectral, And Thermoanalytical Studies On The New Heterobimetallic [Mg(Ii)-Ti(Iv)]-\Mu-Oxoisopropoxide And Its \Beta-Diketonates, Rajesh Kumar
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The new heterobimetallic [Mg(II)-Ti(IV)]-\mu-oxoisopropoxide was synthesized on treatment of magnesium acetate with titanium(IV) isopropoxide in refluxing decalin in 1:2 molar ratio and characterized by liberated isopropanol, elemental, spectral (IR, ^1H and ^{13}C NMR, and mass), thermal analysis, and molecular weight data. The reactions of [Mg(II)-Ti(IV)]-\mu-oxoisopropoxide compound with \beta-diketones in different molar ratios (1:1--1:4) yielded mono to tetra derivatives [{MgO_2Ti_2(OPr^i)_{6-n}L_n}] (where n is 1--4 and L = acetylacetonate/benzoylacetonate anion)] of the \mu-oxo complex and were characterized by elemental, liberated isopropanol, and spectral analysis (IR and ^1H and ^{13}C NMR). These studies revealed interesting facets in support of plausible structures of the …

Hard Chromium Electrodeposition From A Trivalent Chromium Bath Containing Water-Soluble Polymer, Vyacheslav Protsenko, Viktor Gordiienko, Tatiana Butyrina, Elena Vasileva, Felix Danilov
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The effect of polyvinylpyrrolidones (PVPs) with different molecular weights as polymeric additives to a sulfate trivalent chromium bath was ascertained. Introduction of PVPs to the plating bath was stated to result in improvement in the surface appearance of chromium deposits and stabilization of current efficiency value in long-term electrolysis. The rate of metal deposition is practically independent of the deposition time. Thus, using PVP additive allows one to obtain high-quality Cr-coatings with a thickness of several tens of micrometers. It is found by means of turbidimetric analysis that the polymer additive has an accelerating effect on the aggregation of particles …

C-, N-, and/or O-methylation products were generated from 11H-isoindolo[2,1-a]quinazoline-5-one upon treatment with NaH followed by iodomethane under air, and possible recrystallization from methanol. Two products were fully characterized by NMR and X-ray diffraction analysis. In accordance with the HSAB principle, this soft methylating agent (MeI) leads mainly to the C,C-dimethylated product 11,11-dimethyl-11H-isoindolo[2,1-a]quinazoline-5-one, which was previously not observed, beside the N-methylated product, in a procedure using methyl tosylate as a hard methylating agent of the same substrate in the initial absence of a base. A mechanism is finally proposed for the formation of methyl 2-(3-methyl-4-oxo-3,4-dihydroquinazolin-2-yl)benzoate as an oxidation side product.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The aim of this work was to investigate the influence of an anti-inflammatory agent, the bulky counterion named glucosamine (Gl^+), in sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) in 2 ways: 1) by titration of SDS solutions with different concentrations of Gl^+; and 2) by titration of Gl^+ with SDS solution with concentration close to the critical micellar concentration (cmc) (7.7 mM). In procedure 1, micellisation study by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) showed that the increase in Gl^+ concentration reduces the cmc and the micellisation enthalpy. Increasing of the micellisation entropy was also observed, suggesting desolvation of micellar structures as a consequence of electrostatic …

Optimization of the LiFePO_4 cathode active material synthesis process in the hydrothermal method consists of many factors, including pH, carbon coating, particle size optimization, sintering and hydrothermal synthesis temperature. The main goal of this study is to determine the effect of particle size, pH and carbon coating on capacity and cycle performance. In this study, LiFePO_4 cathode active materials were prepared at different pH (6.5 and 8.5) and temperature (160 and 180 °C) levels using the hydrothermal method. The hydrothermal synthesis products were sintered at 400, 500, 600, and 700 °C with 5% and 7% carbon source. The initial discharge …

New phthalocyanine compounds containing mixed-donor substituted macrocyclic groups were synthesized. The complexes of metal phthalocyanines 3--5 were prepared by the reaction of 2 to get dinitrile derivative complexes by means of the corresponding anhydrous metal salts. Structures of the new compounds were characterized by IR, ^1H NMR, ^{13}C NMR, elemental analysis, and MS spectral data.
