Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this communication, encapsulation studies between metallosupramolecular capsule 1, formed by 2 subphthalocyanines (SubPcs) coordinated to 3 metallic centers, and phthalocyanine (Pc)-C_{60} fullerene conjugates 2--5 have been carried out. It was shown that the encapsulation of the C_{60} moiety by the SubPc cage occurred exclusively for dyads 2--4, whereas it was not observed in the case of triad 5. The rigidity of the linker between the Pc and the fullerene unit proved to have an important impact in the complex formation. Complex formation was tested in 2 different solvents, where the importance of solvophobic effects was highlighted. The resulting multicomponent …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Porphyrins are an important family of organic chromophores that have attracted attention as photosensitizers in TiO_2-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This brief review is dedicated to comparative studies of phosphonic and carboxylic acid anchoring groups for attachment of porphyrin sensitizers on semiconductors or conductors surface. Here we have selected some representative examples of recently described phosphonate/carboxylate porphyrins with the aim to demonstrate that porphyrin phosphonate should be a promising anchoring group for such systems.

History, Development, And A New Concept Of Phthalocyanines In Turkey, Özer Bekaroğlu
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
This paper reviews the history of phthalocyanines in Turkey. Phthalocyanines are chemical compounds that were accidently discovered nearly a century ago. The relevant research and articles have grown dramatically in Turkey since our first paper on them containing four [15]crown[5] published in 1986. The ball-type phthalocyanines were produced and published as a new concept in phthalocyanine chemistry for the first time by our group in Turkey in 2006. Unfortunately, with the exception of our work on this subject, almost no papers have been published in Turkey or in other countries since then. We strongly urge scientists to consider working on …

Soil And Biosolid Nano- And Macro-Colloid Properties And Contaminant Transport Behavior, Jessique L. Ghezzi
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Despite indications that they are potential contaminant transport systems and threats to groundwater quality, very little effort has been invested in comparing contaminant transport behavior of natural environmental nanocolloids and their corresponding macrocolloid fractions in the presence of As, Se, Pb, and Cu contaminants. This study involved physico-chemical, mineralogical, stability and contaminant-transport characterizations of nano- (< 100 nm) and macro-colloids (100-2000 nm) fractionated from three Kentucky soils and one biosolid waste. Particle size was investigated with SEM/TEM and dynamic light scattering. Surface reactivity was estimated using CEC and zeta potential. Mineralogical composition was determined by XRD, FTIR, and thermogravimetric analyses. Sorption isotherms assessed affinities for Cu2+, Pb2+, AsO3-, and SeO4-2 contaminants, while settling kinetics experiments of suspensions at 0, 2 and 10 mg/L contaminants determined stability and transportability potential. Undisturbed 18x30 cm KY Ashton Loam soil monoliths were also used for …

Rydberg Time-Of-Flight And Imaging Probes Of The Velocity-Dependent Hydrogen Atom Spin Polarization, Bernadette Michlewicz Broderick
Rydberg Time-Of-Flight And Imaging Probes Of The Velocity-Dependent Hydrogen Atom Spin Polarization, Bernadette Michlewicz Broderick
Wayne State University Dissertations
Insights into electron spin and nuclei are central to the field of chemical reaction dynamics. Of particular note is the study of spin-polarized hydrogen (SPH) atoms, which result from photodissociation of molecules. Examination of the detailed H-atom spin polarization is achieved by determining the projection of the electron spin onto the probe laser direction. In doing so, its angular distribution, complex dissociation pathways, and coherent excitation mechanisms may be revealed. Approaches to detect SPH atoms are experimentally challenging due to the difficulty associated with probing ground-state H atoms through isolated fine structure levels, which is the only direct way to …

Graphene is one of the most promising allotropes of carbon with wide applications in nanotechnology. Modification of graphene by chemical means can further expand its uses. Here, liquid-exfoliated graphene is functionalized with p-aminophenyl moiety using p-nitrophenyl diazonium salts which were diazotized in situ then reduced by tin(II) chloride. The aminophenyl-graphene thus produced is further modified to form polyaniline-graphene (PANI-GNH) by in situ oxidative graft polymerization of aniline using ammonium peroxydisulfate as oxidizing agent. The properties of the PANI-GNH were compared with polyaniline/graphene blends by Raman, infrared and UV-Visible spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. Indeed, PANI-GNH registered different spectrochemical and electrochemical properties …

Articles
Electrochemical copolymerization of pyrrole (Py) and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) was performed in an ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, (BMIM BF4) employing a ‘micro-cell’ in order to use the materials efficiently. Characterization of the copolymers formed on an ITO substrate was performed for different Py: EDOT ratios (1:2, 1:1, 2:1) in both aqueous and ionic liquid electrolytes. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical analysis revealed that the properties of the copolymer depend upon the Py/EDOT monomer ratio used. The copolymer PPy-co-PEDOT (2:1) displayed good stability, a switching time of 20 s and a colouration efficiency of 101.3 C-1cm2. The presence of Py in the copolymer stabilised …

Energy Transfer In A Discrete, Soluble Heterobimetallic Complex Containing Tb3+ And Eu3+, Nikhil Kumar Barua
Wayne State University Theses
A discrete, heterobimetallic Tb3+-Eu3+ -containing complex has been synthesized, and energy transfer was observed in the complex without using an antenna. This result represents a new way of observing lanthanide emission using lanthanide excitation in discrete, soluble complex. The occurrence of energy transfer in the mixed heterobimetallic Tb3+-Eu3+ complex was characterized using steady state luminescence spectroscopy and luminescence-decay studies. These findings are likely to be useful for fundamental mechanistic studies of energy transfer in lanthanide-containing systems.

Cancers are one of the leading causes of death in United States, effecting roughly 20% of the population. To develop effective anti-cancer agents, vast research is in progress that targets various factors leading to cancer. One such area of cancer research is developing drugs that inhibit histone deacetylase (HDAC) proteins. HDACs are histone modifying enzymes that regulate transcription of genes. Aberrant recruitment of HDACs to the transcription factors leads to tumor onset and growth. Because of their potential anti-cancer therapeutic interest, several HDAC inhibitors are in various stages of clinical trials. SAHA and Romidepsin are FDA-approved drugs for the treatment …

Hiv-1 Rna Dimerization At Single Molecule Level, Hansini R. Mundigala
Wayne State University Dissertations
The Dimerization Initiation Sequence (DIS) is a conserved hairpin-loop motif on the 5' UTR of the HIV-1 genome. It plays an important role in genome dimerization through formation of a "kissing complex" intermediate between two homologous DIS sequences. This bimolecular kissing complex ultimately leads to the formation of an extended RNA duplex. Understanding the kinetics of this interaction is key to exploiting DIS as a possible drug target against HIV. We wish to report a novel study that makes an important contribution to understanding the dimerization mechanism of HIV-1 RNA in vitro. Our work has employed single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy …
Effects Of Statin Drugs And Tocotrienol Rich Fraction Supplementation In Chronic Hemodialysis Patients And Metabolomic Profile, Eno Latifi
Wayne State University Theses
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is known as a heterogeneous disorder which currently is on the rise and lately has been classified as a public health issues in the United State and worldwide. CKD is an irreversible and progressive disease which can lead to kidney failure, and this is depicted by the advanced stage of the disorder when it reaches the point, that is classified as end stage of renal disease (ESRD) (Stage 5 of CKD) (eGRF <15 mL/min/ 1.73 m2 working capacity), where both organs are in a total or permanent kidney failure. End-Stage renal disease patients, on hemodialysis have been associated to experience an accelerated form of atherosclerosis, which is induced by inflammation, impairment of antioxidant system and elevated oxidative stress. Since the problem effecting ESRD patients is multifactorial, the objective of this investigation is to explore and look at the effects of supplementing with vitamin E-tocotrienol rich fraction (TRF), a micronutrient which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid lower capabilities into tackling these comorbid conditions experienced by this population. Therefore the aims of this investigation will be to explore changes in lipid profiles, inflammatory markers, and oxidative status, as well as look at any changes in metabolomic profiles. It was hypothesized that by supplementing with TRF a vitamin E, for 16 weeks in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis, it may help reverse and/or improve, oxidative status, inflammatory markers, increase antioxidants status and improve lipid profiles.
The study was double-blinded, randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled design trial, of 81 adult patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis at Great Lake Dialysis Clinic, Detroit MI, where …

The effects of propargyl alcohol (PA), propynol ethoxylate (PME), propargyl sulfonate (PS), and diethylaminopropyne (DEP) compounds as additives in a Watts bath on coating brightness, thickness, and efficiency were investigated and compared using electrochemical methods such as linear and square wave voltammetry (SWV), chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, electrochemical impedance (EIS), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. The charge transfer resistance values obtained in the presence of PA and PME were similar and higher than the other values obtained; this result suggests that PA and PME have better adsorption. The optic and XRF measurements revealed that for the PS molecule the plating is the …

Multidrug membrane transporters (efflux pumps) can selectively extrude a variety of structurally and functionally diverse substrates (e.g., chemotoxics, antibiotics), leading to multidrug resistance (MDR) and ineffective treatment of a wide variety of diseases. In this study, we have designed and constructed a fusion gene (egfp-mexB) of N-terminal mexB with C-terminal egfp, inserted it into a plasmid vector (pMMB67EH), and successfully expressed it in the Δ MexB (MexB deletion) strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosato create a new strain that expresses MexA-(EGFP-MexB)-OprM. We characterized the fusion gene using gel electrophoresis and DNA sequencing, and determined its expression in live …

Graphene, unlike other carbon allotropes has recently been the subject of interest in the field of nano material research. Graphene is being utilized as the building block for graphitic materials such as the 0-D fullerenes, 1-D nanotubes and 3-D graphites. Graphene is a single layer material, made up of interconnected hexagons of sp bonded carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb crystal lattice. Graphene and its derivatives have been shown in previous studies/research to exhibit exceptional high electronic and thermal conductivity, optical transparency and high specific surface area additional to outstanding mechanical flexibility and environmental stability. Graphene is amongst the most …

Lymphatic Filariasis (elephantiasis) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the filarial nematodes Brugia malayi (B. malayi), Brugia timori, and Wuchererici Bancrofti (1,8). These parasites are present in over 83 counties in the tropics and sub-tropics where more than 1.4 billion people are at risk of infection and 130 million people are presently infected (1,7). Previous work from our lab has led to the identification and expression of a B. malayi stress-activated protein kinase, Bm-MPKl (a human p38/C. elegans PMK-1 ortholog). Bm-MPKl plays an important role in the parasites’ protection against oxidative stress (1), and as such is a potential …
