Synthesis: What We Have Learned From The East Texas Radiocarbon Database, Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula
CRHR: Archaeology
This poster provides a short overview of what we have learned from the East Texas Radiocarbon Database since it became available on the Council of Texas Archeologists’ website in 2011. These successes are numerous and include the advancement of novel methodological approaches; an improvement in our comprehension of the temporal nuances within the East Texas Archaic; the division of the East Texas Woodland period into Early, Middle and Late; the refinement of Caddo temporal chronology – particularly from a geographic perspective -- and it has provided one line of evidence to use to argue for the fluorescence of corn-based agriculture …

Radiocarbon Trends And The East Texas Caddo Tradition (Ca. A.D. 800-1680), Robert Z. Selden Jr., Timothy K. Perttula
CRHR: Archaeology
Through the employment of radiocarbon (14C) dates as data, we use the date combination process to refine site-specific summed probability distributions for 555 dates from Caddo sites (n = 19) in East Texas with 10 or more 14C dates. Summed probability distributions are then contrasted across river basins and natural regions with the remainder of the East Texas Caddo Radiocarbon Database (n = 338 dates from 132 other Caddo sites), highlighting the temporal and spatial character of Caddo archaeological sites throughout East Texas.

In mammals, the fatty acid transport proteins (FATP1 through FATP6) are members of a highly conserved family of proteins, which function in fatty acid transport proceeding through vectorial acylation and in the activation of very long chain fatty acids, branched chain fatty acids and secondary bile acids. FATP1, 2 and 4, for example directly function in fatty acid transport and very long chain fatty acids activation while FATP5 does not function in fatty acid transport but activates secondary bile acids. In the present work, we have used stable isotopically labeled fatty acids differing in carbon length and saturation in cells …

Colloidal Nano-Apatite Particles With Active Luminescent And Magentic Properties For Biotechnology Applications, Rajendra Kasinath, Kumar Ganesan
Environmental Engineering
Colloidal Nano-apatite Particles with Active Luminescent and Magentic Properties for Biotechnology Applications. The synthesis of functional nano-materials is a burgeoning field that has produced remarkable and consistent breakthroughs over the last two decades. Individual particles have become smaller and shown potential for well defined functionality. However, there are still unresolved problems, a primary one being the loss of functionality and novelty due to uncontrolled aggregation driven by surface energy considerations. As such the first design criteria to harness the true potential of nanoparticles is to prevent unwanted agglomeration by: (1) improving, and, if possible, (2) controlling aggregation behavior. This requires …
Sequence-Specific Inhibition Of A Nonspecific Protease, Leigh A. Logsdon, Adam R. Urbach
Sequence-Specific Inhibition Of A Nonspecific Protease, Leigh A. Logsdon, Adam R. Urbach
Chemistry Faculty Research
A nonspecific exopeptidase, aminopeptidase N (APN), is inhibited sequence-specifically by a synthetic host, cucurbit[7]uril (Q7), which binds with high affinity and specificity to N-terminal phenylalanine (Phe) and 4-(aminomethyl)phenylalanine (AMPhe) and prevents their removal from the peptide. Liquid chromatography experiments demonstrated that in the presence of excess Q7, APN quantitatively converts the pentapeptides Thr-Gly-Ala-X-Met into the dipeptides X-Met (X = Phe, AMPhe). The resulting Q7-bound products are completely stable to proteolytic digestion for at least 24 h. Structure–activity studies revealed a direct correlation between the extent of protection of an N-terminal amino acid and its affinity for Q7. Therefore, Q7 provides …

Toward A Comprehensive Model Of Photosystem Ii Oxygen Evolving Complex Photoassembly, James Scott Board Ii
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Elucidating the mechanism of photoassembly of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) will lead to a better understanding of how nature catalyzes water oxidation. Although the temperature dependence of oxygen evolution has been described in the literature [1,2], we have performed a comprehensive study that covers Photosystem II (PSII) activity oxygen evolution in the presence and absence of 2,6-dichloro-1,4benzoquinone (DCBQ) from 5–45°C. In addition, we performed similar measurements for OEC photoassembly in the absence of DCBQ. PSIIenriched particles used for our measurements were prepared according to Berthold, Babcock, and Yocum[3], with modifications from Kolling, et al.[4] The oxygen-evolution of intact BBY particles …
Interaction Of Pyrimoidiazolium Ions With Calf Thymus Dna, Stormy Rene Gibson
Interaction Of Pyrimoidiazolium Ions With Calf Thymus Dna, Stormy Rene Gibson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
A new class of fluorescent dyes, pyridoimidiazolium cations, is being considered for their possible use in the biochemical field because of their interactions with DNA. Binding of low molecular weight fluorophores has been proven to cause a wide variety of biological responses in DNA. The dyes used here have been synthesized using α-diimine type compounds. The reaction used has the capability to produce many fluorescent cations. Binding constants of these compounds in acetonitrile with calf thymus DNA have been determined by measuring emission intensity. Emission intensity showed the degree to which binding is occurring. The experimental results show that binding …

Exploration Of The Structural And Energetic Landscape Of Glycol Nucleic Acids, Emily A. Sleeman
CUP Undergraduate Research
- Glycol nucleic acid (GNA) is a non-natural analog of DNA
- In place of the deoxyribose unit of DNA, GNA has an acyclic ethylene glycol unit (Fig. 1)
- The differences between DNA and GNA are evident in the duplex structure (Fig. 3)
- Instead of a major and minor groove, GNA has one large groove (Fig. 3)
- The base pairs of GNA wrap around the single groove like a ribbon on a spool (Fig. 3)
- GNA has primarily intra-strand base stacking, with each base stacking on top of a base of the opposite strand, as opposed to the inter-strand base stacking of …

Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Zooplankton To Document Trophic And Biogeochemical Changes In The San Francisco Estuary, Steven C. Westbrook, Julien Moderan
STAR Program Research Presentations
Zooplankton represent a vital link between phytoplankton and fish, like the endangered Delta Smelt. Human interferences (nitrates from waste water, flow alteration, invasive species introduction…) have altered the structure of the San Francisco Estuary (SFE) ecosystem. We use stable isotope analysis to improve our knowledge of the planktonic food web in the SFE and gain insights into its evolution over the past decades. We use the ratios of certain isotopes (Nitrogen, Carbon, Sulfur, etc.) in different species of zooplankton to tell us what it is feeding on as well as the trophic level it feeds in. My research focused on …

Chemical Compatibility Study Of Anti-Corrosive Materials For Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (Sofia), Belyn Nicole Grant, Zaheer Ali, Greg Perryman, Stefan Teufel, Brian Eney
STAR Program Research Presentations
The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a telescope designed to capture infrared light from deep space, mounted in a highly modified Boeing 747 SP. Portions of the aircraft interior are showing signs of corrosion, and need to be coated with a material that will prevent further corrosion. Up to date, current anti-corrosive materials commonly used on aircrafts are incompatible with the very thin aluminum surface of the telescope mirrors. The purpose of our study is to find an effective corrosion preventive material with low outgassing properties.

Silica cryogels (cryosilicas) in a powder state were synthesized with different concentrations of fumed silica A-300 (CA-300 = 5-20 wt.%), sonicated in aqueous suspension, then frozen at -14 oC at different pressures in a high-pressure stainless steel reactor (a freezing bomb), and dried in air at room temperature. To analyze the effects of low temperature and high pressure, samples were also prepared at -14 oC or room temperature and standard pressure. The structural and adsorption properties of the powder materials were studied using nitrogen adsorption, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, low-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy and thermally stimulated depolarization …

Sodium europium silicate, NaEu9(SiO4)6O2, with apatite structure has been obtained and studied using X-ray diffraction and SEM. It has been shown that sodium sublimation does not take place upon synthesis by the sol-gel method. Rietveld refinement has revealed that sodium atoms are ordered and occupy the 4f position. O(4) atoms not related to silicate ions are placed at the centers of Eu(2) triangles. DC and AC electric conductivity and activation energy have been determined for the compound studied.

Conducting interfaces modified with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have shown improved electrochemical response for different analytes. The efficient formation of functionalized rGO based materials is thus of current interest for the development of sensitive and selective biosensors. Herein, we report a simple and environmentally friendly method for the formation of a hemin-functionalized rGO hybrid nanomaterial that exhibits remarkable sensitivity to peroxynitrite (ONOO−) in solution. The hemin-functionalized rGO hybrid nanomaterial was formed by mixing an aqueous solution of graphene oxide (GO) with hemin and sonicating the suspension for 5 h at room temperature. In addition to playing a key role in …

Electric field effects on water interfacial properties abound, ranging from electrochemical cells to nanofluidic devices to membrane ion channels. On the nanoscale, spontaneous orientational polarization of water couples with field alignment, resulting in an asymmetric wetting behavior of opposing surfacesa field-induced analogue of a chemically generated Janus interface. Using atomistic simulations, we uncover a new and significant field polarity (sign) dependence of the dipolar- orientation polarization dynamics in the hydration layer. Applying electric fields across a nanoparticle, or a nanopore, can lead to close to 2 orders of magnitude difference in response times of water polarization at opposite surfaces. Typical …

Direct and selective small molecule control of transcription factor activity is an appealing avenue for elucidating the cell biology mediated by transcriptional programs. However, pharmacologic tools to modulate transcription factor activity are scarce because transcription factors are not readily amenable to small molecule-mediated regulation. Moreover, existing genetic approaches to regulate transcription factors often lead to high nonphysiologic levels of transcriptional activation that significantly impair our ability to understand the functional implications of transcription factor activity. Herein, we demonstrate that small molecule-mediated conformational control of protein degradation is a generally applicable, chemical biological methodology to obtain small molecule-regulated transcription factors that …
The Removal Of Pharmaceuticals From Wastewater By Wet-Air Oxidation, Miao Sun
The Removal Of Pharmaceuticals From Wastewater By Wet-Air Oxidation, Miao Sun
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ubiquitous occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments has raised concerns about potential adverse effects on aquatic ecology and human health. Certain pharmaceuticals have recently become a major focus of research to better understand the routes and persistence of these compounds once they enter into aquatic system.
In this research, two model compounds were selected to represent pharmaceuticals that have been identified by recent research as being persistent; specifically, these compounds were trimethoprim (TMP, a basic antibiotic) and gemfibrozil (GEM, an acidic lipid regulator). Treatment of synthetic wastewater that contained these drugs was accomplished using …
X-Band Rapid-Scan Epr, Deborah Gale Mitchell
X-Band Rapid-Scan Epr, Deborah Gale Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The advantages of rapid-scan EPR relative to CW and pulse techniques for samples with long longitudinal relaxation time T1 (Ns0 defects in diamond, N@C60, and amorphous hydrogenated silicon), heterogeneous samples (crystalline 1:1 α,γ-bisdiphenylene-β-phenylallyl (BDPA):benzene), lossy samples (aqueous nitroxyl radicals), and transient radicals (5-tert-butoxycarbonyl-5-methyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (BMPO)-superoxide adduct) were studied.
For samples with long relaxation times, CW (continuous wave) EPR is challenging due to power saturation and distortions from passage effects. In rapid-scan EPR, the field is swept through resonance in a time that is short relative to T2. In rapid-scan EPR, the magnetic field is …
Seeded Propagation Of Tau Fibrils, Paul David Dinkel
Seeded Propagation Of Tau Fibrils, Paul David Dinkel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, Pick's disease, and corticobasal degeneration, the deposition of fibrils composed of misfolded tau protein is observed. Recent evidence suggests that tau fibrils transfer between cells and spread throughout the brain, underscoring the significance of fibril propagation.
Six tau isoforms exist in the adult human brain that can be grouped into 4-repeat (4R) tau and 3-repeat (3R) tau based on the presence or absence of the second of four microtubule binding repeats. We demonstrate in vitro that seeded fibril growth, a prerequisite for the spreading of the tau pathology, is crucially …

A "combi-cured&" fluoroelastomer (FKM) rubber formulation was designed to yield 100% cohesive rubber failure when cured to cold-rolled steel with derivatives of polymeric silane adhesives. Three different categories of adhesives were tested: Unsaturated Polymeric Silane with Phosphonium Salt (UPSP-D), Unsaturated Polymeric Silane (UPS-L), and Saturated Polymeric Silane (SPS-L). Adhesion Inserts molded using ASTM Method D429 Method C all consistently yielded 100% cohesive rubber failure and showed adhesion strength in the range of 700 to 800 psi after being pulled at 2" per minute until break. After obtaining consistent 100% rubber failure, a design of experiment (DOE) was implemented to determine …

Morphing wing technologies provide expanded functionality in piloted and robotic aircraft, extending particular vehicle mission parameters as well as increasing the role of aviation in both military and civilian applications. However, realizing control surfaces that do not void the benefits of morphing wings presents challenges that can be addressed with microfiber composite actuators (MFCs). We present two approaches for realizing control surfaces. In one approach, flap-like structures are formed by bonding MFCs to each side of a metal substrate. In the other approach, MFCs are bonded directly to the wing. Counter intuitively, the flap approach resulted in larger voltage actuation …
