The 3M Company product Novec™ 71IPA DL, a mixture of methoxyperfluorobutane, methoxyperfluoroisobutane and 4.5 wt.% isopropyl alcohol, has been found to be very stable at ambient temperature, producing fluoride at the rate of ~1 ppm/year. Our earlier kinetic and theoretical studies have identified the reaction mechanism. This paper identifies the 1H and 19F NMR chemical shifts, multiplicities, and coupling constants of reactants and the major products that result from aging the mixture in sealed Pyrex NMR tubes for periods up to 1.8 years at temperatures from 26 °C to 102 °C. Chemical shifts and coupling constants of fluorine …

Redesigned Storm Water Management System For The Portage Lakefront, Nicholas Adams, Agustin Perez Maldonado Jul 2013

Redesigned Storm Water Management System For The Portage Lakefront, Nicholas Adams, Agustin Perez Maldonado

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The work described here was carried out at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, located near Gary, Indiana. The goal of the reported project was to fix an incorrectly designed storm water management system located at the Portage lakefront. Because the original design could not handle peak water flows, there has been erosion of the sand dunes. The erosion of the sand dunes has led to the collapsing of stairs, and the exposure of water mains. To fix these problems, a new design was made that incorporated additional water inlets, as well as a pipeline to take water to a different …

Cyclization Reactions Of Enamines In Aqueous Solution, Jack Albert Jul 2013

Cyclization Reactions Of Enamines In Aqueous Solution, Jack Albert

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Enamines are organic molecules with a nitrogen atom adjacent to a carbon-carbon double bond formed by a reaction between an aldehyde/ketone and a secondary amine. It has previously been found that when a secondary amine with a nucleophilic side chain is reacted with an aldehyde/ketone, instead of forming an enamine, a cyclization reaction occurs. These reactions are carried out in organic solvents such as benzene or toluene. The current study is an attempt to create a green synthesis of these species, by studying reactions of 2-piperidinemethanol with various aldehydes/ketones in water (Figure 1) and reactions of 2-piperidineethanol with various aldehydes/ketones …

Characterization Of The Gas-Sensing Protein Cooa, Teryn Gehred, Jessica Lyza Jul 2013

Characterization Of The Gas-Sensing Protein Cooa, Teryn Gehred, Jessica Lyza

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This research aims to characterize the binding specificity of heme proteins to various gas signal molecules. Heme proteins in the gas-sensing family bind to specific gas signal molecules, causing a certain biological function to be activated or deactivated. In this study, variants of the carbon monoxide sensing heme protein CooA from the bacteria R.rubrum and C. hydrogenoformans are compared. Key differences in signal binding specificity and heme environment configuration will be investigated. This is done by using site-directed mutagenesis to alter the heme environment, isolating the CooA proteins through protein purification, and analyzing the isolated products through DNA binding assays. …

A Theoretical Study Of Brooker's Merocyanine With (2-Hydroxypropyl)-Β-Cyclodextrin, Benjamin Helmsing Jul 2013

A Theoretical Study Of Brooker's Merocyanine With (2-Hydroxypropyl)-Β-Cyclodextrin, Benjamin Helmsing

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

To understand the important forces in host-guest complexes, a theoretical study of these systems was carried out using computational methods to better understand experimental results. β-cyclodextrin (BCD) is a cone shaped molecule where the narrow end is known as the primary rim and the wider end is known as the secondary rim. The host molecule being studied, (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (2HPBCD),is a modified version of BCD with hydroxypropyl (HP) groups substituted along the rims. Because this modification replaces some of the OH groups present in BCD, it removes their ability to hydrogen bond, while introducing new OH groups that are more flexible. …

Synthesis Of An Epoxide For Tmm Cycloadditions, Will Prusinski, Chase Freeland Jul 2013

Synthesis Of An Epoxide For Tmm Cycloadditions, Will Prusinski, Chase Freeland

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

In order to produce a highly functionalized five-membered ring useful for further synthetic processes via Palladium catalysis, a series of precursors need to be synthesized in order to form the epoxide used in cyclic formation. First, a trimethylsilane alcohol is synthesized from beta-Methallyl alcohol. The alcohol will then be subjected to Swern oxidation conditions, forming a TMS aldehyde. The aldehyde prepared will then undergo epoxidation, forming the desired precursor for Palladium catalyzed cycloaddition. The Swern oxidation has yet to occur in good conversion due to sensitivity, but when performed using a model compound the oxidation, and epoxidation both worked to …

Study Of Ligand Binding Reactions Of Bis-Aminemetalloporphyrins, Frank Wang

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Porphyrins are molecular complexes that are critical for the proper functioning of many important biological macromolecules such as hemoglobin and myoglobin. The goal of this research is to monitor the transformations and differences that occur with the addition of metals and ligands to a model porphyrin compound called tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP). During this work, a series of metalloporphyrin complexes were prepared, with changes to both metal centers and ligand attachments at those centers. Specifically, iron, zinc, cobalt and manganese metalloporphyrins have been synthesized and identities verified via electronic absorption spectroscopy. Ligand binding studies have begun with the addition of piperidine and …

Inverse Versus Normal Dithienylethenes: Computational Investigation Of The Photocyclization Reaction, AuréLie Perrier, StéPhane Aloise, Massimo Olivucci, Denis Jacquemin

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The understanding of the intimate electronic processes in photochromes is essential to optimize the properties of light-controllable devices. For one of the most studied classes of molecular switches, namely, dithienylethenes, the relative efficiencies of the normal and inverse structures remained puzzling. Indeed, despite a larger ratio of the active antiparallel conformers for the latter, the quantum yields of cyclization of inverse dithienylethenes do not exceed those of its normal counterpart. In the present contribution, we provide the first explanation of this experimental outcome using multireference ab initio quantum chemistry. We demonstrate the existence of a fluorescent intermediate on the S-1 …

A, Catalysis Of Co-Prox By Water-Soluble Rhodium Fluorinated Porphyrins. B, Studies Toward Fluorination Of Electron Rich Aromatics By Nucleophilic Fluoride, Shri Harsha Uppaluri

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The rhodium(III) derivative of a water soluble, heavily fluorinated porphyrin is shown to catalyze the low temperature, low pressure selective oxidation of carbon monoxide in hydrogen gas streams for use in fuel cell applications. The catalytic activity is a direct result of the removal of electron density from the metal center. Selectivity for CO oxidation is a direct consequence of fluorination of the porphyrin periphery, since these substituents enhance the rate of the reaction and prevent the formation of Rh(II)-Rh(II) dimmers. Significantly, the dramatic increase in rhodium hydride acidity caused by fluorination precludes hydrogen activation and generation, thereby permitting preferential …

Coupling Fast Water Exchange To Slow Molecular Tumbling In Gd3+ Chelates: Why Faster Is Not Always Better, Stefano Avedano, Mauro Botta, Julian Saunders Haigh, Dario L. Lango, Mark Woods Jul 2013

Coupling Fast Water Exchange To Slow Molecular Tumbling In Gd3+ Chelates: Why Faster Is Not Always Better, Stefano Avedano, Mauro Botta, Julian Saunders Haigh, Dario L. Lango, Mark Woods

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The influence of dynamics on solution state structure is a widely overlooked consideration in chemistry. Variations in Gd3+ chelate hydration with changing coordination geometry and dissociative water exchange kinetics substantially impact the effectiveness (or relaxivity) of monohydrated Gd3+ chelates as T1-shortening contrast agents for MRI. Theory shows that relaxivity is highly dependent upon the Gd3+–water proton distance (rGdH), and yet this distance is almost never considered as a variable in assessing the relaxivity of a Gd3+ chelate as a potential contrast agent. The consequence of this omission can be seen when considering …

Multifunctional Corrosion Inhibition Behavior Of Zn-Al Calcined Layered Double Hydroxides For Steel Rebar In Nacl Solution, Xiao-Juan Zhang, Jing-Jing Wang, Shi-Gang Dong, Chang-Jian Lin

Journal of Electrochemistry

The Zn-Al layered double hydroxides (Zn-Al LDHs) and calcined products (Zn-Al CLDHs) were synthesized successfully under a routine air atmosphere. The results showed that both Zn-Al LDHs and Zn-Al CLDHs had obvious flake structures. The corrosion inhibition of Zn-Al CLDHs for steel rebar in NaCl solution was studied by electrochemical techniques. It was found that the corrosion rate of steel rebar decreased significantly after the steel rebar was treated by Zn-Al CLDHs in NaCl solution for 3 h. It was indicated that Zn-Al CLDHs could absorb Cl- and release OH- during their reconstruction process, which provided dual protection …

Influences Of The Cinnamic Acid On Zinc Electrodeposition At Glassy-Carbon Electrode, Kai Li, Shen Chen, Shen-Na Liu, Bi-Sang Chen, Heng Lin, Guo-Liang Chen, Qing-Xiang Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influences of cinnamic acid (CIN) on the mechanism of Zn deposition and nucleation kinetics onto glassy-carbon electrode were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). The results revealed that the zinc reduction took place via Zn2+ + 2e → Zn in the presence of CIN, but the kinetics of zinc deposition was changed and the formation rate of zinc nuclei was accelerated. In the absence of CIN, the mechanism of zinc nucleation followed the 3D-instantaneous diffusion-controlled nucleation, while the 3D-progressive diffusion-controlled nucleation in the presence of CIN. The addition of CIN reduced the nucleation rate, but increased …

Carcinogenic Adducts Induce Distinct Dna Polymerase Binding Orientations, Kyle B. Vrtis, Radoslaw P. Markiewicz, Louis J. Romano, David Rueda

Chemistry Faculty Research Publications

DNA polymerases must accurately replicate DNA to maintain genome integrity. Carcinogenic adducts, such as 2-aminofluorene (AF) and N-acetyl-2-aminofluorene (AAF), covalently bind DNA bases and promote mutagenesis near the adduct site. The mechanism by which carcinogenic adducts inhibit DNA synthesis and cause mutagenesis remains unclear. Here, we measure interactions between a DNA polymerase and carcinogenic DNA adducts in real-time by single-molecule fluorescence. We find the degree to which an adduct affects polymerase binding to the DNA depends on the adduct location with respect to the primer terminus, the adduct structure and the nucleotides present in the solution. Not only do the …
