Solvation Of Organic Cations In The Gas Phase And Within Molecular Clusters, Ahmed Hamid Apr 2012

Solvation Of Organic Cations In The Gas Phase And Within Molecular Clusters, Ahmed Hamid

Theses and Dissertations

The role of the solvent in ionic and ion-molecule interactions is of fundamental importance in kinetics and thermodynamics of solution chemistry. However, the study of the ionic interactions in the presence of a large number of solvent molecules is very challenging. Therefore, the gas-phase is the appropriate medium to study such reactions on a molecular level where the ion-solvent interaction can be examined by studying ions surrounded with a cluster of solvent molecules in the complete absence of the any interference caused by the bulk of the solvent. In nature, organic ions can form hydrogen bonds with solvents. An insight …

Sorption Kinetic Study Of Selenite And Selenate Onto A High And Low Pressure Aged Iron Oxide Nanomaterial, Christina M. Gonzalez, Jeffrey Hernandez, Jose R. Peralta-Videa, Cristian E. Botez, Jason Parsons, Jorge L. Gardea-Torresdey

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

The sorption of selenite (SeO32−) and selenate (SeO42−) onto Fe3O4 nanomaterials produced by non microwave-assisted or microwave-assisted synthetic techniques was investigated through use of the batch technique. The phase of both synthetic nanomaterials was determined to be magnetite by X-ray diffraction. The average grain sizes of non microwave-assisted and microwave-assisted synthetic Fe3O4 were determined to be 27 and 25 nm, respectively through use of the Scherrer's equation. Sorption of selenite was pH independent in the pH range of 2-6, while sorption of selenate decreased at pH 5 and 6. The addition of Cl− had no significant effect on selenite or …

Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard Apr 2012

Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard

Articles

We establish geometric properties of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds which arise in relation to Slatertype variational spaces in many-particle Hartree-Fock theory and beyond. In particular, we prove thatthey are analytic homogeneous spaces and submanifolds of the space of bounded operators on the single-particle Hilbert space. As a by-product we obtain that they are complete Finsler manifolds. These geometric properties underpin state-of-the-art results on existence of solutions to Hartree-Fock type equations.

Enantioselective Biotransformation Of Prochiral Ketone Via Daucus Carota, Ryan Smith, Charlie Knox, Elizabeth Davis Apr 2012

Enantioselective Biotransformation Of Prochiral Ketone Via Daucus Carota, Ryan Smith, Charlie Knox, Elizabeth Davis

Undergraduate Research Conference

Biotransformations of prochiral ketones can be performed using plant cells. The benefits of using plant cells include low cost, environmentally sound procedures compared to conventional chemical processes, and the stereospecific nature of the reaction.1,2 Benzofuran-2-yl methyl ketone was reduced to (- )-benzofuran-2-yl-ethanol after incubation with carrots in water. The reaction was enantioselective in that it produced the S-isomer as indicated by optical activity. Currently, attempts to isolate the carrot enzyme and antimicrobial studies of the (-)-benzofuran-2-yl-ethanol product are underway.

Research In The Teaching Laboratory: Improving The Synthesis Of Lidocaine, Chris Taliaferro Apr 2012

Research In The Teaching Laboratory: Improving The Synthesis Of Lidocaine, Chris Taliaferro

Undergraduate Research Conference

The multi-step synthesis of Lidocaine is traditionally a low-yielding reaction mainly due to its second step, formation of a-chloro-2,6-dimethylacetanilide. Students often question the use of an acid (acetic acid) as the solvent for the reaction of a base (2,6-dimethylaniline, 1) with the acyl chloride (a-chloroacetyl chloride, 2), (Reaction Scheme) but they follow the procedure as directed.

Students, if treated as scientists in training, should be able to form a hypothesis before an experiment, design experiments to test the given hypothesis, and evaluate the results. A typical laboratory class was assigned to synthesize a-chloro-2,6-dimethylacetanilide using …

Protein Profiling Of Adenine Nucleoside And Nucleotide Analogs Binding Proteins Using N6-Biotinylated-8-Azidoadenosine Analogs As Affinity Based Protein Profiling Probes, Shikha Mahajan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Identification of differential expressions of proteins in proteomic profiles of biological samples shows great potential as a valuable technique for the early diagnosis of various diseases. An important challenge in modern protein profiling approaches is to reduce the complexity of the samples by limiting the number of proteins that need to be evaluated for distinction in the expression between normal and deceased cells. In this research, an affinity based approach for the enrichment of nucleotide and nucleoside binding proteins from a complex cell proteome has been developed. To achieve this goal, new N6-biotinylated-8-azido-adenosine probes (AdoRs) have been designed and synthesized …

Impact Of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles On Cilantro (Coriandrum Sativum), Ana C. Barrios^, Maria I. Morales, Cyren M. Rico, Jose R. Peralta, Jorge L. Gardea-Torresdey

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2012

The impact of nanoparticles (NPs) on edible plants is currently a theme of great concern. Cerium oxide NPs (CeO2 NPs) are widely used in biomedical applications, fuel additives, and other consumer products. Studies have shown that these NPs are associated with liver damage. In addition, studies from our research group have also shown that CeO2 NPs are stored in plant tissues without modification. Thus, these NPs could be distributed in the food chain through edible plants, posing a threat for human health. Cilantro (Coriandrum sativum) is a very important culinary and medicinal plant worldwide. It is …

Crystal Engineering Of Multi-Component Crystal Forms: The Opportunities And Challenges In Design, Heather Dawn Marie Clarke

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is heightened interest to diversify the range of crystal forms exhibited by active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in the pharmaceutical industry. The crystal form can be regarded as the Achilles' heel in the development of an API as it directly impacts the physicochemical properties, performance and safety of the API. This is of critical importance since the crystal form is the preferred method of oral drug delivery by industry and regulatory bodies. The ability to rationally design materials is a lucrative avenue towards the synthesis of functional molecular solids with customized physicochemical properties such as solubility, bioavailability and stability. Pharmaceutical …

I, Synthesis Of Β-Sitosterol And Phytosterol Esters. Ii, New Methodology For Singlet Oxygen Generation From 1,1-Dihydroperoxides, Jiliang Hang

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Phytosterols are steroid compounds structurally similar with cholesterol and vary in the nature of carbon side chain. β-Sitosterol is commercially available in preparative amount only as mixtures with other phytosterols. New semipreparative synthesis of pure β-sitosterol and sidechain-modified phytosterols is discussed in this dissertation. This new synthesis is achieved via a temporary masking of the stigmasterol 5,6-alkene as an epoxide. Following performance of the desired modification, the alkene is regenerated through a mild deoxygenation. Preparation of phytosterol esters for cholesterol metabolism study is also discussed in this dissertation.

Singlet oxygen (1O2) is the lowest excited state …

Chemoselective Oxidation Of 6,13-Bis(Decylthio) Pentacene, Claire Eunhye Cho Apr 2012

Chemoselective Oxidation Of 6,13-Bis(Decylthio) Pentacene, Claire Eunhye Cho

Theses and Dissertations

Organic semiconductors present much potential for industrial use because of their possible low cost production, Pentacene and pentacene derivatives are promising candidates for organic semiconductor research since their ^-conjugated electronic structures possess small HOMO- LUMO gaps and high field effect mobility. Whereas there is much potential in devices made from pentacenes they do however undergo short lifetimes and poor processability due to photodegradation and poor solubility of pentacene. Previous research has shown that the pentacene lifetime and solubility can be enhanced by arylthio and alkylthio substituents placed on the pentacene backbone. For example 6,13-i?/s(decylthio)pentacene was one of the longest lived …

Initial Investigation Of The Wavelength Dependence Of Optical Properties Measured With A New Multi-Pass Aerosol Extinction Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer (Ae-Doas), R. T. Chartier, Margaret E. Greenslade

Chemistry

Atmospheric aerosols directly affect climate by scattering and absorbing radiation. The magnitude of the impact is dependent upon the wavelength of light, but is often estimated near 550 nm. When light scattering and absorption by aerosols is approximated, the wavelength dependence of the refractive index for specific components is lost. As a result, climate models would have inherent uncertainties for aerosol contributions to radiative forcing when considering the entire solar spectrum. An aerosol extinction differential optical absorption spectrometer has been developed to directly measure aerosol extinction at mid-ultraviolet to near infrared wavelengths. The instrument consists of a spectrometer coupled to …

Multiphoton Fluorescence Spectroscopy To Monitor The Folding/Unfolding Of The N-Terminal Domains 5-6 Of Wilson Disease Protein, Ibtesam Y. Alja'afreh, Ramakrishna Guda, David Huffman Apr 2012

Multiphoton Fluorescence Spectroscopy To Monitor The Folding/Unfolding Of The N-Terminal Domains 5-6 Of Wilson Disease Protein, Ibtesam Y. Alja'afreh, Ramakrishna Guda, David Huffman

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Denaturation of the N-terminal domains 5-6 of Wilson Disease protein has been monitored through its mutant WLN5-6Cys51 by circular dichroism (CD), one and two-photon fluorescence spectroscopy after binding it to the thiolreactive dye 7-diethylamino-3-(4‘-maleimidylphenyl) -4-methylcoumarin (CPM). Far-UV CD measurements have shown that the mutations and the binding of the dye did not affect the secondary structure of the protein as the unfolding transition remained constant. The fluorescence maximum of the dye changed with the denaturant concentration and followed the trend obtained from CD and shown that one dye labeled protein can be used to monitor the unfolding of protein. Interestingly, …

The Impact Of Ligand Design On The Coordination Chemistry And Reactivity Of Metal Pincer Complexes, Sarath Wanniarachchi

Dissertations (1934 -)

Pincer ligands are uninegative tridentate metal-coordinating agents of the form [XZY]- where Z is the central, anchoring Lewis donor while X and Y are flanking Lewis donors. Ever since initial reports of transition metal pincer complexes were published in the late 1970's, there has been burgeoning interest in such complexes because of their desirable robust nature, generally simple syntheses, and the spectacular chemical transformations that they can mediate. In this research project, two new sets of pincer ligands with a diarylamido anchor and either two pyrazolyl nitrogenous flanking donors (NNN pincer) or one pyrazolyl and one diphenylphosphine donor (NNP pincer) …

Detection Of Folate Receptor From Fr+ Cells, Gopikrishna Pinnaka Apr 2012

Detection Of Folate Receptor From Fr+ Cells, Gopikrishna Pinnaka

All Capstone Projects

Targeted drug delivery is a newer and less explored arena that has potential scope in tumor targeting because the regular chemotherapy has lethal effects on the normal cells also. Our present Work was an attempt to specifically target receptors on cancerous cells, especially the Folate Receptor (FR). Folate is important for cells for DNA synthesis and the tissues that rapidly divide require folate, cancer cells are no exceptions for this. To cope with the increased demand for the folate the cancer cells express greater FR on the cell surface. This very fact was our basis for the construction of our …
