Chemistry Faculty Publications

Purpose:Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death among all gynecological malignancies in Western countries. Although therapy for ovarian cancer has been greatly improved in the past 20 years, the overall survival for patients with advanced ovarian cancer has not changed significantly. The poor survival rates in patients with advanced ovarian cancer are due both to late diagnosis and to lack of effective drugs for the majority of patients who have a relapse and develop resistance to current chemotherapy agents used for ovarian cancer. Thus, developing and discovering effective novel drugs with different molecular structures from conventional chemotherapy agents have …

The Effect Of Dielectric Friction On The Rate Of Charge Separation In Type Ii Znse/Cds Semiconductor Nanorods, Alexander N. Tarnovsky, Nishshanka N. Hewa-Kasakarage, Patrick Z. El-Khoury, Nickolas Schmall, Maria Kirsanova, Alexander Nemchinov, Alexey Bezryadin, Mikhail Zamkov

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The effect of dielectric friction on the rate of charge separation in type II ZnSe/CdS semiconductor nanorods has been investigated using picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The spatial separation of an excited electron-hole pair was estimated from the redshift in band edge absorption corresponding to the decrease in the exciton binding energy. The present study identifies a considerable effect of the solvent polarity on the rate of charge separation in semiconductor heterostructures, which should be taken into account when selecting nanorod caging media, such as solvents or polymer matrices. © 2009 American Institute of Physics.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a disorder in which an excessive number of blood stem cells develop into the white blood cell group called granulocytes. The anticancer drug Busulfan is a cell cycle non-specific alkylating agent which is utilized to maintain white blood cell counts below 15000 cells/microliter. The side effects induced by busulfan are significant and affirms the intimation for new drug constructs. Fifteen analogous compounds were generated from the molecular structure of busulfan . These compounds retain the double methanesulfonate functional groups descriptive of this class of alkylating anticancer drugs. However, the carbon chain substituent separating the methanesulfonate …

Atp-Dependent Unwinding Of U4/U6 Snrnas By The Brr2 Helicase Requires The C Terminus Of Prp8, Corina Maeder, A. K. Kutach, C. Guthrie Jan 2009

Atp-Dependent Unwinding Of U4/U6 Snrnas By The Brr2 Helicase Requires The C Terminus Of Prp8, Corina Maeder, A. K. Kutach, C. Guthrie

Chemistry Faculty Research

The spliceosome is a highly dynamic machine requiring multiple RNA-dependent ATPases of the DExD/H-box family. A fundamental unanswered question is how their activities are regulated. Brr2 function is necessary for unwinding the U4/U6 duplex, a step essential for catalytic activation of the spliceosome. Here we show that Brr2-dependent dissociation of U4/U6 snRNAs in vitro is activated by a fragment from the C terminus of the U5 snRNP protein Prp8. In contrast to its helicase-stimulating activity, this fragment inhibits Brr2 U4/U6-dependent ATPase activity. Notably, U4/U6 unwinding activity is not stimulated by fragments carrying alleles of prp8 that in humans confers an …

Preparation And Characterization Of Some Substituted Benzyl N-Nitrosocarbamates Containing An N-2-(Methylthio)Ethyl Or A Bis(2-Aminoethyl)Sulfide Functionality, Satya Venkata, Eric Shamo, Vladimir Benin

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The synthesis and characterization of some substituted benzyl N-nitrosocarbamates with an N-2-(methylthio)ethyl or a bis(2-aminoethyl)sulfide functionality is reported, as a part of a long-term goal to design and prepare novel photolabile structures that could be used as substances for controlled release of alkylating and/or crosslinking agents. The synthesis was accomplished by reaction of benzyl chloroformates with the corresponding amines, resulting in the preparation of carbamates. The latter were subsequently nitrosated, utilizing two different N-nitrosation methods, to yield the target structures.

A Preliminary Study Of A Non-Invasive Glucose Sensor Based On A Mercury Sensor, Erin Wood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes mellitus is a potentially lethal disease that affects 7.6 percent of American people. In the US, it is recognized as the 6th leading cause of death. Failure to control blood glucose levels (BGL) in patients with either type of diabetes can lead to other serious complications as well, such as loss of limb, blindness and other health problems. Controlling and monitoring the BGL in post-op and intensive care patients in the hospital is also vital to their health. Currently the most reliable method of monitoring BGL is through an invasive procedure which monitors the amount of glucose in blood …

Room Temperature Synthesis And Systematic Characterization Of Ultra-Small Ceria Nanoparticles, Chetak Patel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cerium oxide (ceria, CeOâ‚‚) is a rare earth oxide that has attracted wide-spread research interest because of its unique properties such as high mechanical strength, oxygen ion conductivity, oxygen storage capacity and autocatalytic property. In recent years, researchers have discovered that ceria nanoparticles (NPs) are capable of protecting cells from free radical induced damage. Interestingly, it was found that nanometer size (~ 5 nm) ceria can scavenge free radicals quite efficiently, thus acting as an anti-oxidant. This phenomenon has been explained based on the autocatalytic property of ceria NPs. Several methods have been developed for the synthesis of ceria NPs …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Transition Metal And Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Using Dendritic Complexes, Elisabeta Mitran

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The research in this dissertation focuses on the synthesis and characterization of metal/metal oxide nanoparticles in solution and on surfaces with a high degree of control over size and size dispersity; such well-defined nanoparticles were made using metal ion-dendrimer complexes and silica-supported organometallic dendrimers. The metal oxide-based materials can be used as laboratory surrogates for combustion-generated nanoparticles to assess their role in mediating pollutant formation. Nickel nanoparticles with low size dispersity were prepared by a dendrimer-ligand-based method employing five generations amine-terminated poly(propylene imine) dendrimer, DAB-Amn. After coordination, borohydride reduction of Ni(II) ion-dendrimer complexes yielded Ni(0) nanoparticles, as determined by X-ray …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this dissertation is the structure-property relationships of ternary intermetallic stannides and gallides. We are interested in these compounds because of the wide range of physical properties they possess. While investigating the Ln-Co-Sn system (Ln = lanthanide), we have synthesized single crystals that crystallize in the Yb3Rh4Sn13, Ho7Co6Sn23 and the Tb5Rh6Sn18 structure types. We observe the formation of a particular structure type depending on the size of the lanthanide present. The aforementioned compounds all contain CoSn6 trigonal prisms, which create voids occupied by Ln and Sn polyhedral units. We have also investigated the physical properties of these compounds …

A Novel Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate Labeled Poly(Styrenesulfonate Sodium Salt), Xiaowei Tong Jan 2009

A Novel Synthesis And Characterization Of Fluorescein Isothiocyanate Labeled Poly(Styrenesulfonate Sodium Salt), Xiaowei Tong

LSU Master's Theses

The diffusion of polyelectrolytes in low-salt or salt-free aqueous solutions is a controversial question. It has been intensively discussed since it was discovered in 1978. Most previous experimental data were obtained from dynamic light scattering (DLS), whose precision, however, was reduced by stringent sample preparation and weak scattering of polyelectrolyte in low-salt solution. For the most commonly studied polyelectrolyte, poly(styrenesulfonate sodium salt) (NaPSS), the harsh polymerization condition and the manufacturing procedure lead to hydrophobic defects and aggregations, which also block a correct insight about the diffusion of polyelectrolyte. In contrast to DLS, fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) directly looks on the …

Substituted Bis(Beta-Diketones) For Molecular Squares, Jace Sandifer Jan 2009

Substituted Bis(Beta-Diketones) For Molecular Squares, Jace Sandifer

LSU Master's Theses

Our group has been synthesizing porous supramolecular metal-organic molecules using multidentate β-diketones as ligands. For example, m-phenylenebis(acetylacetone) (m-pbaH2, 1) and m-phenylenebis(dipropionylmethane) (m-pbprH2, 2) were readily converted to the molecular squares Cu4(m-pba)4 (6) and Cu4(m-pbpr)4 (7), which bind guests such as 4,4’-bpy and C60.1 However, 6 and 7 are only soluble in a few solvents, limiting their use in practical applications. It is therefore necessary to derivatize the ligand with different functional groups in order to improve solubility and adjust host-guest properties. Simple alkoxy derivatives should prove useful in testing this idea as they would be relatively chemically inert and should …

A Study Of The Self-Assembly Of Water-Soluble Porphyrins In Aqueous Solution, Javoris Hollingsworth Jan 2009

A Study Of The Self-Assembly Of Water-Soluble Porphyrins In Aqueous Solution, Javoris Hollingsworth

LSU Master's Theses

In nature, self-assembly processes of biologically active organic molecules often occur, resulting in formation of dimers and higher oligomers of various and sometimes complex structures. This natural occurrence of self-organization has been the subject of research, with the aim of understanding and possibly modulating the aggregation behavior of biological molecules. The meso-tetrakis(4-phosphonatophenyl) porphyrin, H2TPPP was synthesized, purified, and characterized. Its self-assembly was studied in aqueous solutions as a function of pH and time. The variations on the λmax and shape of the Soret band of this porphyrin in the absorption spectra when altering the pH indicated the pH dependency in …

Doctoral

Environmental pollution and industrialization on a global scale has drawn attention to the vital need for developing new hygienic and environmentally friendly purification technologies. The most common indoor and outdoor purification process have their corresponding limitations of electricity and/or other energy sources. To address such enormous tasks, advance oxidation technology like heterogeneous photocatalytic systems via metal oxide semiconductors such as TiO2, ZnO, that are capable to operate effectively and efficiently under UV and visible light must be established. Due to the wide band gap of semiconductors, they are unable to absorb visible light. Hence, numerous research efforts have been done …

The Syntheses Of Methyl Jasmonate And Analogs Of Alpha-Methylene-Gamma-Butyrolactone Utilizing Titanium Medicated Cyclocarbonylation, Steve O. Lawrence Jan 2009

The Syntheses Of Methyl Jasmonate And Analogs Of Alpha-Methylene-Gamma-Butyrolactone Utilizing Titanium Medicated Cyclocarbonylation, Steve O. Lawrence

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

From its humble beginnings as a novel carbon–carbon bond forming reaction, the Pauson–Khand reaction has lead to the synthetic development of a variety of natural products. One particular variation of the Pauson–Khand reaction was called the hetero Pauson–Khand. This reaction differs from the normal Pauson–Khand reaction because the reaction employs an intramolecular titanium mediated cycloaddition using enal and enones instead of alkenes and alkynes functional groups to prepare a variety of natural products. These natural products usually contain a bicyclic cyclopentenone core. Because the new ring contains a hetero atom, the name hetero Pauson–Khand was coined. Alpha–Methylene–Gamma–Butyrolactones posses a wide …

Computational Studies On Fatty Acid Synthesis: From Mechanisms To Drug Design, Matthew Edward Mckenzie Jan 2009

Computational Studies On Fatty Acid Synthesis: From Mechanisms To Drug Design, Matthew Edward Mckenzie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The first committed steps of the Fatty Acid synthesis pathway involves the de/carboxylation reactions of biotin. By understanding this step, potential novel antimicrobial agents could be discovered. The current tools of drug discovery can only help the research in finding and modifying potential hits. Finding a lead candidate from these programs are often equated to finding a needle in a haystack, which is due to the many assumptions used in molecular docking. The fundamental reaction kinetics can not be described by these techniques and a detailed study of the decarboxylation reaction is investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics. In this …

Comparison Of Photochromic Properties And Thermal Stabilities Of Fulgide, Fulgimide, And Benzimidazole[1,2-A]Pyrrolidine-2-One Derivatives, Mahmut Köse, Ersi̇n Orhan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

New thermally stable photochromic fulgimides and benzimidazole[1,2-a]pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives of furylfulgide and thienylfulgide were prepared and their photochromic properties were investigated. Thermal stabilities of some of the new isomers in an alcoholic solution and in PMMA (poly(methyl methacrylate)) polymer films, and pyrolytic behaviors in inert atmosphere with TGA were compared. The colored form of fulgimide and that of benzimidazole[1,2-a]pyrrolidin- 2-one derivatives showed large bathochromic shifts for visible absorption maximum compared with the colored form of corresponding fulgides. The imides and benzimidazole[1,2-a]pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives of fulgide displayed better thermal stability than corresponding fulgides.

A Density Functional Study Of The Relative Stability Of Intermediates In A Mcmurry Coupling Reaction, Andrew Jozef Livingston

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Reductive cyclization via McMurry coupling is a common way to form pyrrolizidine rings. In this work we investigate the titanium-catalyzed McMurry coupling reaction leading to a pyrrolizidine alkaloid using density functional methods. Specifically, we compare the relative energies of all possible pinacolate intermediates at the UB3LYP/6-31G level of theory. The most stable intermediate is found to be the one resulting from C-O bond insertion in the ester group. The McMurry product is not predicted to form.
