Advanced Radiometry For High Discrimination Explosive Fireball Discrimination, Steven E. Slagle Mar 2009

Advanced Radiometry For High Discrimination Explosive Fireball Discrimination, Steven E. Slagle

Theses and Dissertations

The high explosive fireball phenomenological model for the mid wave infrared spectrum, developed by AFIT, performs classification from spectral signatures was modified to use radiometric intensities. Five bands were sequentially fit to derive the five physical fit parameters describing the fireball's temperature, size, soot absorption coefficient within 16% and emissions from the H2O and CO2 concentrations within 333% of the spectral model. This was improved by changing the model's band sizes, center, and fitting methods where all five fit parameters were matched to within 17% of spectral model. This demonstrated that a combination of radiometric intensities could …

Investigation Of Electrical And Optical Properties Of Bulk Iii-V Ternary Semiconductors, Travis C. Gomez

Theses and Dissertations

Bulk grown III-V ternary semiconductors of In0.08Ga0.92Sb and In0.15Ga0.85As were investigated through Hall-effect and photoluminescence measurements to determine carrier concentration, mobility, sheet resistivity, and luminescence spectrum. In the past, epitaxial layers of ternary compounds have been grown on binary compound substrates, and thus very limited lattice matched ternary alloys were available. Recently, bulk grown ternary substrates have been developed, and it has presented a renewed interest in using these substrates to grow high quality ternary compounds for use in many next generation optoelectronic devices. The results of photoluminescence (PL) study for the …

Laboratory Studies Of Ice Formation Pathways From Ammonium Sulfate Particles, M. E. Wise, K. J. Baustian, M. A. Tolbert

CUP Faculty Research

Cirrus clouds are composed of ice particles and their formation pathways have been studied extensively in the laboratory. The ability of ammonium sulfate particles to act as nuclei for cirrus clouds has been of particular importance because of their ubiquitous presence in the upper troposphere. The results of past laboratory experiments of homogeneous ice nucleation from ammonium sulfate particles show a wide range of freezing conditions. In the present study, a flow tube apparatus equipped with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to reexamine these discrepancies. It was found that when ammonium sulfate particles were preconditioned at 100% relative humidity …

ATCA (2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid) is a promising marker to assess cyanide exposure because of several advantages of ATCA analysis over direct determination of cyanide and alternative cyanide biomarkers (i.e. stability in biological matrices, consistent recovery, and relatively small endogenous concentrations). Concentrations of ATCA in the plasma of smoking and non-smoking human volunteers were analyzed using gaschromatography mass-spectrometry to establish the feasibility of using ATCA as a marker for cyanide exposure. The levels of ATCA in plasma of smoking volunteers, 17.2 ng/ml, were found to be significantly (p < 0.001) higher than that of non-smoking volunteers, 11.8 ng/ml. Comparison of ATCA concentrations of smokers relative to nonsmokers in both urine and plasma yielded relatively similar results. The concentration ratio of ATCA for smokers versus non-smokers in plasma and urine was compared to similar literature studies of cyanide and thiocyanate, and correlations are discussed. This study supports previous evidence that ATCA can be used to determine past cyanide exposure and indicates that further studies should be pursued to validate the use of ATCA as a marker of cyanide exposure.

This work presents modeling and simulation results of a procedure to coat nanofibers and core-clad nanostructures with thin film materials using plasma enhanced physical vapor deposition. In the experimental effort that motivates the modeling, electrospun polymer nanofibers are coated with metallic materials under different operating conditions to observe changes in the coating morphology. The modeling effort focuses on linking simple models at the reactor, nanofiber, and atomic levels to form a comprehensive model. Numerical simulations that link the concentration field with the evolution of the coating free surface predict that as the Damkohler number is increased the coating morphology changes …

Beta-Peptides With Improved Affinity For Hdm2 And Hdmx, Elizabeth A. Harker, Douglas S. Daniels, Danielle A. Guarracino, Alanna S. Schepartz

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We previously described a series of 314-helical β-peptides that bind the hDM2 protein and inhibit its interaction with a p53-derived peptide in vitro. Here we present a detailed characterization of the interaction of these peptides with hDM2 and report two new β-peptides in which non-natural side chains have been substituted into the hDM2-recognition epitope. These peptides feature both improved affinity and inhibitory potency in fluorescence polarization and ELISA assays. Additionally, one of the new β-peptides also binds the hDM2-related protein, hDMX, which has been identified as another key therapeutic target for activation of the p53 pathway in tumors.

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Macrocycles with persistent shape and large, noncollapsible lumens have attracted increasing interest because of their unique properties and potential applications.[1] Although most of the macrocycles with well-defined shape have hydrocarbon backbones formed from the stepwise coupling of sp- or sp2-hybridized carbon atoms,[1a,b,d, 2] macrocycles with other rigid backbones have also been reported.[3] For example, we discovered a series of aromatic oligoamide macrocycles that could be generated in high yield by a one-pot macrocyclization process.[4] These readily available macrocycles contain hydrophilic cavities that are rich in carbonyl oxygen atoms. With their persistent shape and noncollapsible cavities, these macrocycles have demonstrated unique …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Lanthanide Ion Dota-Tetraamide Complexes Bearing Peripheral Hydroxyl Groups, Azhar Pasha, Mai Lin, Gyula Tircso, Cynthia L. Rostollan, Mark Woods, Garry Kiefer, A. Dean Sherry, Xiankai Sun

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The use of lanthanide-based contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging has become an integral component of this important diagnostic modality. These inert chelates typically possess high thermodynamic stability constants that serve as a predictor for in vivo stability and low toxicity. Recently, a new class of contrast agents was reported having a significantly lower degree of thermodynamic stability while exhibiting biodistribution profiles indicative of high stability under biological conditions. These observations are suggestive that the nature of contrast agent stability is also dependent upon the kinetics of complex dissociation, a feature of potential importance when contemplating the design of new …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A diastereoselective route to the 5,7,5-tricyclic core of the guianolides is presented. This route relies on Cope rearrangement of a divinylcyclopropane prepared by alkenyl Grignard addition to a (pentadienyl)iron(+1) cation, followed by oxidative decomplexation. An additional key reaction involves oxidative rearrangement of a 3,4-epoxy-1,7-diol to generate a γ-lactone. The relative stereochemistry of this product was established by X-ray crystallography.
