Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Copolymer nanocomposites were prepared by suspension copolymerization of bis[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate and methyl methacrylate, together with bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate layered double hydroxide and a montmorillonite, Cloisite 93A. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphology of nanocomposites and the dispersion of additives in the polymer. The thermal stability of the nanocomposites has been assessed by thermogravimetric analysis and cone calorimetry has been used to study the fire properties. Bis[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate not only copolymerized with MMA, but also aids in the dispersion of additives in PMMA. The copolymer nanocomposites have better dispersion and higher degradation temperature and more char …

The Spectral Game: Leveraging Open Data And Crowdsourcing For Education, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley, Robert J. Lancashire, Anthony J. Williams
College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
We report on the implementation of the Spectral Game, a web-based game where players try to match molecules to various forms of interactive spectra including 1D/2D NMR, Mass Spectrometry and Infrared spectra. Each correct selection earns the player one point and play continues until the player supplies an incorrect answer. The game is usually played using a web browser interface, although a version has been developed in the virtual 3D environment of Second Life. Spectra uploaded as Open Data to ChemSpider in JCAMP-DX format are used for the problem sets together with structures extracted from the website. The spectra are …

Novel Cinchona Alkoloid Derived Ammonium Salts As Phase-Transfer Catalysts For The Asymmetric Synthesis Of Beta-Hydroxy Alpha-Amino Acids Via Aldol Reactions And Total Synthesis Of Celogentin C., Bing Ma
Theses and Dissertations
Project I. Cinchona alkaloid-derived quaternary ammonium salts have been successfully used as phase-transfer catalysts, particularly in asymmetric alkylations. Our group applied this type of catalyst in the synthesis of β-hydroxy α-amino acids via aldol reactions and discovered that the Park-Jew catalyst afforded good yields and good enantiomeric excess of the syn diasteromers, but negligible diastereoselectivity. This project was therefore focused on the synthesis of novel cinchonidine-derived catalysts with the Park-Jew catalyst as the lead structure. The C3 position of cinchonidine nucleus was modified to achieve dimers and catalysts possessing electron-deficient alkyne and alkene moieties. Synthesized catalysts were tested in the …

For a system which undergoes electron or energy transfer in a polar solvent, we define the diabatic states to be the initial and final states of the system, before and after the nonequilibrium transfer process. We consider two models for the system-solvent interactions: A solvent which is linearly polarized in space and a solvent which responds linearly to the system. From these models, we derive two new schemes for obtaining diabatic states from ab initio calculations of the isolated system in the absence of solvent. These algorithms resemble standard approaches for orbital localization, namely, the Boys and Edmiston–Ruedenberg (ER) formalisms. …

Epidemiological and animal model studies have suggested that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can act as chemopreventive agents. The cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor nimesulide shows anti-cancer effect in different type of cancers. In the current study, five breast carcinoma cell lines were used to explore the anti-cancer mechanisms of a nimesulide derivative compound 76. The compound dose dependently suppressed SKBR-3, BT474 and MDA-MB-453 breast cancer cell proliferation with IC50 of 0.9 μM, 2.2 μM and 4.0 μM, respectively. However, it needs much higher concentrations to inhibit MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell growth with IC50 at 22.1 μM and 19.6 μM, respectively. …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
KatG (catalase-peroxidase) in Mycobacterium tuberculosis is responsible for activation of isoniazid (INH), a pro-drug used to treat tuberculosis infections. Resistance to INH is a global health problem most often associated with mutations in the katG gene. The origin of INH resistance caused by the KatG[S315G] mutant enzyme is examined here. Overexpressed KatG[S315G] was characterized by optical, EPR, and resonance Raman spectroscopy and by studies of the INH activation mechanism in vitro. Catalase activity and peroxidase activity with artificial substrates were moderately reduced (50 and 35%, respectively), whereas the rates of formation of oxyferryl heme:porphyrin π-cation radical and the decay of …

We report an approach to the design of reactive polymer films that can be functionalized post-fabrication to either prevent or promote the attachment and growth of cells. Our approach is based on the reactive layer-bylayer assembly of covalently crosslinked thin films using a synthetic polyamine and a polymer containing reactive azlactone functionality. Our results demonstrate (i) that the residual azlactone functionality in these films can be exploited to immobilize amine-functionalized chemical motifs similar to those that promote or prevent cell and protein adhesion when assembled as self-assembled monolayers on gold-coated surfaces and (ii) that the immobilization of these motifs changes …

Definitive X-ray crystallographic evidence is obtained for a single hole (or a polaron) to be uniformly distributed on the three equivalent 1,2-dimethoxybenzenoid (or veratrole) rings in the hexamethoxytriptycene cation radical. This conclusion is further supported by electrochemical analysis and by the observation of an intense near-IR transition in its electronic spectrum, as well as by comparison of the spectral and electrochemical characteristics with the model compounds containing one and two dimethoxybenzene rings.

Web Based Classes For Enhancement Of Prelaboratory Lectures, Tiffany Hesser, Michael Collura
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
The use of web classes, such as Tegrity Campus1, as a supplement to pre laboratory reading or a replacement for pre laboratory lectures could become a standard tool in laboratory education protocol. In classes with multiple lab sections and instructors, pre laboratory lectures can lack consistency and it can be difficult to gauge the students’ level of preparation. With the ever increasing exposure to technology, students generally prefer information in a digital and multimedia form, rather than textbook readings. Therefore, this method can prove to better prepare students prior to laboratory experiments, increasing the overall understanding of the chemical reactions …

Two new bipolar host materials based on a 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBI) core with the carbazole and diphenylamine groups were designed, synthesized, and applied in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PhOLEDs). The DFT calculations indicated desirable distribution of HOMO and LUMO densities, suggesting potential for bipolar charge transport. In addition, the electrochemical and phosphorescence studies revealed that neither the LUMO level nor the triplet energies differ significantly from the parent TPBI suggesting that the new materials would be suitable as hosts capable of both electron and hole transport and suitable for harvesting green electrophosphorescence. As a result of broader charge recombination …

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are a common pollutant created by natural (forest fires) or anthropogenic sources, such as incomplete combustion in engines (vehicular traffic) or incinerators. Many PAHs are known or suspected carcinogens and also have mutagenic properties and endocrine disrupting effects.
Although most atmospheric PAHs are measured using high-volume sample collection on filters, a convenient way of monitoring these pollutants is through plant matrices, such as pine needles that act as passive samplers. The needles are covered with a lipid-rich cuticle that absorbs the pollutants. Evergreens are especially useful because they continue to accumulate pollutants during the winter.

Synthesis of fatty acid diethanolamide was carried out by the condensation of diethanolamine with lauric acid, decanoic acid and octanoic acid in the presence of Novozym 435. The influence of solvent, time, temperature and agitation on the reaction rate was studied. Formation of lauroyl diethanolamide was complete in 6h in acetonitrile at 50° C whereas in toluene the reaction was not complete in 6h. Increase of reaction temperature from 50° C to 70° C increased the reaction rate. Proper agitation of the reaction mixture enhanced the reaction rate. Reaction in solution appeared to be more efficient than the reaction in …

N,N-diethyl-2-methoxybenzamide, an insect repellent compound, was incorporated into cotton textile using the sol-gel method. Evaluation of the results of four different sol-gel formulations showed that a lower condensation rate resulted in significantly better encapsulation. Also investigated was the encapsulation in the presence of other polymers like polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) that prolong the release of the repellent. The sol-gel formulation, SiO2 : polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) (1:0.8), gave smooth fabric and good encapsulation of the insect repellent compound. PS and PVA resulted in cloths which are aesthetically undesirable. Cloths coated with sol-gel PVA gave the best repellent release …

The TbCo4-x Fex B compounds with x=0, 1, and 2 have been investigated by x-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetic measurements, and iron-57 Mössbauer spectroscopy. The substitution of cobalt by iron induces both an anisotropic increase in the unit-cell volume and a large increase of approximately 250 K in the Curie temperature; the 4.2 K magnetization decreases continuously with increasing iron content. The powder neutron diffraction patterns and the Mössbauer spectra of the TbCo4-x Fex B compounds reveal a strong preferential substitution of iron for cobalt on the 2c site, small transition metal magnetic moments of approximately …

The long-term goal of this investigation is to study the effects of increased cholesterol levels on the molecular activity of membrane-bound enzymes such as nitric oxide synthase, that are critical in the functioning of the cardiovascular system. In this particular investigation, we used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dielectric thermal analysis (DETA) to study the effect of added cholesterol on melting/recrystallization and dielectric behavior, respectively, of phosphatidylcholine (PC) bilayered thin films. We also used electrochemical methods to investigate the effect of added cholesterol on the redox behavior of the oxygenase domain of nitric oxide synthase as a probe embedded in …

This paper describes a study of excited-state properties of naphthalmide (NI) and four 4-substituted derivatives: 4-chloronaphthalimide (Cl-NI), 4-methylthionaphthalmide (MeS-NI), 4-nitronaphthalimide (O(2)N-NI), and 4-(N,N-dimethylaminonaphthalimide (Me(2)N-NI). Steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectra were collected in solvents of varying polarity to determine the excited-state character of NI derivatives. Furthermore. the excited-state dynamics were studied Using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The experimental findings were compared to calculated data obtained using time-dependent density functional (TD-DFT) methods. We found that light absorption by all NI derivatives leads to the production of the second excited state (S(2)), which was found to have a n,pi* character. Within similar to …

Mnte-2-Pyp And Radiation In A Prostate Cancer Model: Implications For Radiotherapy, Adeola Y. Makinde
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A major limitation of successful radiation therapy in cancer treatment is the increase in normal tissue damage as higher doses are used to achieve greater tumor destruction. Radiation dose optimization in cancer therapy requires achieving maximum tumor destruction with minimal damage to normal tissue Antioxidants have been shown to protect normal tissues against radiation damage, as radiation-induced tissue damage results predominantly from reactive oxygen species that directly damage cellular components. However, for effective use as normal tissue radioprotectants in radiotherapy, these antioxidants must not protect the tumors. Mn (III) tetrakis (N-ethylpyridinium-2-yl) porphyrin (MnTE-2-PyP) is a metalloporphyrin antioxidant that has been …

Time-resolved Resonance Raman spectra are reported for Hb tetramers, in which the αand β chains are selectively substituted with mesoheme. The Soret absorption band shift in meso- relative to protoheme permits chain-selective excitation of heme RR spectra. The evolution of these spectra following HbCO photolysis show that geminate recombination rates and yields are the same for the two chains, consistent with recent results on 15N-heme isotopomer hybrids. The spectra also reveal systematic shifts in the deoxy-heme ν4 and νFe-His) RR bands, which are anti-correlated. These shifts are resolved for the successive intermediates in the protein structure, which have previously been …

The Mechanism Of Electrochemical Testing Method Under Synergistic Effect Of Nacl And Water Vapor At 600℃, Li Liu, Ying Li, Fu-Hui Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
The existence of electrochemical reaction during the corrosion process of pure Fe under a deposit of solid NaCl in water vapor at above 400 ℃ had been detected by measuring the corrosion current using double-layer electrode. In EIS measurement, only one capacitive loop was obtained on the pure metals and this gave the information of oxide layer on them. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and scanning-electron microscopy(SEM) results testified that there is a good relationship between the resistance of oxide layer Rox and the corresion reaction rate for pure metals with different oxidation times. The electrochemical technique is an effective method for studying corrosion performance …

Effect Of Liquid Dispersion On Corrosion Behavior Of Metals In Gas/Liquid/Solid Multiphase Corrosion Systems, Jing Jiang, Jia Wang
Journal of Electrochemistry
Liquid dispersion, described by the parameters of gas/liquid/solid three-phase boundary(TPB) zone of dispersed liquid on a metal surface,is an important property of liquid state influencing corrosion behavior of metals in gas/liquid/solid multiphase corrosion systems. In our paper, the characterisation of cathodic oxygen reduction process in TPB zone was discussed, and a model describing the cathodic process of TPB zone was developed. On this basis, the relationship between the cathodic limiting current and the TPB parameters was studied, and the simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental data. The role of liquid dispersion in atmospheric and sandy soil corrosion systems was also simulated.

Corrosion Performance Of Epoxy Coatings By Chemical Modification With Silanes, Liang Liu, Wei-Gang Ji, Ji-Ming Hu, Jian-Qing Zhang, Chu-Nan Cao
Journal of Electrochemistry
The improvement of corrosion performance of epoxy coatings by modification with "active" and "non-active" silanes is presented."Active" silanes are defined as ones having functional groups that can react with the epoxy groups in the epoxy resin, usually amino-silanes."Non-active" silanes are defined as ones not reacting with the epoxy groups, but can react with the hydroxyl groups in the epoxy backbone by the condensation reactions under the catalysis of organic tin compounds. The FTIR results showed that both the "active" and "non-active" silanes had been successfully grafted onto the epoxy resin.Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) and accelerated corrosion test(Machu test) showed that the corrosion performance of …

Various Ti/IrRuSn,Ti/IrTa/IrRuSn and Ti/IrTaSn/IrRuSn oxide electrodes were prepared by sol-gel method. The surface morphology and microstructure were analysed with FESEM and XRD.The electrochemical activity and stability were investigated using electrochemical technologies including chlorine and oxygen evolving potential measurements, cyclic voltammetry, accelerated life test, and alternative electrolysis. The results indicate that the electrodes with interlayers present more cracks on the surface and a little bigger average grain size, with particles of different shapes precipitated in the cracks. The electroactive sites are increased and the selectivity for the chlorine evolving reaction is enhanced, but the current efficiency for the chlorine production is somewhat lowered by the addition of different interlayers. The …
