Poly(methyl methacrylate)–clay nanocomposites have been studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is clear that as the polymer undergoes thermal degradation, the clay accumulates at the surface and the barrier properties which result from this clay accumulation have been described as the reason for the decreased heat release rate for nanocomposites. The surface composition of the clay changes as the nanocomposite is heated and the changes are affected by the organic-modification that were applied to the clay in order to prepare the nanocomposite.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS, has been used to examine several polystyrene-clay nanocomposites. The accumulation of oxygen, from the almuniosilicate, on the surface of the polymer was observed, along with the loss of carbon. This confirms that the barrier properties of the clay provide a mechanism by which nanocomposite formation can enhance the fire retardancy of the polymers. No difference is detected depending upon the extent of exfoliation or intercalation of the nanocomposite. #2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three ammonium salts, hexadecylallyldimethyl ammonium chloride (Allyl16), hexadecylvinylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride (VB16) and hexadecylvinylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride (Bz16) were synthesized and ion exchanged onto montmorillonite. Poly(methyl methacrylate)–clay nanocomposites of all three clays were prepared by bulk polymerization and the resulting nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The clays which contain a pendant double bond are more likely to give an exfoliated material while that which contains no double bond is intercalated. The thermal stability and flame retardancy were measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Cone Calorimetry respectively.

Short peptides containing Cα,α-dipropylglycine (Dpg) at alternating sequence positions were synthesized and examined for conformational behavior. Peptide assembly was performed using Fmoc-solid-phase chemistry where the coupling with PyAOP could be significantly enhanced at elevated temperature. Circular dichroism (CD) and NMR conformational studies revealed that incorporation of Dpg residues induced folded structures into peptides. It was observed that Dpg residues adopted helical conformation in a helix-promoting sequence. The resulting helical structure was comprised of consecutive β-turns whose structure was stabilized by salt bridge in aqueous solution. The research presented in this document focuses on the fabrication, characterization and application of microfluidic systems fabricated in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with the emphasis focused on the fabrication processing steps. Microfluidic devices were produced in PMMA using X-ray lithography. The fabrication methods investigated were sacrificial mask, polyimide membrane mask and embossing techniques. PMMA microfluidic devices fabricated using X-ray lithography were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy, while analytical techniques such as electroosmotic flow determination, separations, and fluorescent microscopy were used to characterize fluid transport in these devices. The research presented in this dissertation involves the synthesis, characterization, and the use of novel surfactants, including both micelles and vesicles, as pseudostationary phases in micellar capillary electrophoresis (MCE) for the separation of achiral and chiral compounds. Separation of environmental pollutants such as 2 to 6-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was achieved using poly(sodium undecylenic sulfate). A baseline separation of all 16 PAHs was possible for the first time in MCE by a single-surfactant system. In addition, a surfactant with a phosphated head group, i.e., di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate (DEHP), was also introduced as a novel pseudostationary phase for separation of 21 weakly …

The experiments conducted explored lanthanide-arsenic-sulfide ternary systems with particular emphasis on the lanthanide, samarium. A number of stoichiometric mixtures in the samarium arsenic sulfide ternary system were prepared. The samples were sealed into evacuated silica ampoules and then annealed at 900°C. The final products were identified by characterize by X-ray powder diffraction. The powder analyses were used to construct a portion of the ternary phase diagram at 900°C. Every sample contained three common phases, SmAs, AsS and As4S3. Since these compounds were found in every sample, they were not included in the phase diagram. The phase diagram did split into …

C.I. Acid Orange 7 (15510) is the sodium salt of p-[(2-hydroxy-1-naphtalenyl)azo] benzenesulfonic acid. This azo dye is commonly known as Orange II and has been used to dye soaps, shoes, wood and paper (Ramchandani et al., 1994). In the United States and Europe, this dye is not allowed in foodstuffs. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficiency of a TiO2-mediated photocatalytic oxidation process to degrade Orange II and to determine if Orange II is cytotoxic to certain types of cells.
