Preparation And Characterization Of Lithiated Cathode Materials For Lithium Batteries, Shanti Navaratnam
Student Works (2000-2009)
Four different cathode materials, LiNiO₂, LiCoO₂, LiCo₀.₂ Ni₀.₈O₂ and LiCo₀.₄, Ni₀.₆O₂ were synthesized by sol - gel technique. The prepared materials were characterized X-ray diffraction pattern, FT-IR and cyclic voltammetry. X-ray diffraction pattern shows crystallinity of materials, increases with higher calcination temperature. From FT- IR studies, it was shown, that the purity of sample also increased with prolong heating at higher temperatures. It was possible to obtain pure and highly crystalline LiNiO₂ after heating for fourteen hours at 800°c. Cyclic voltammetry shows the four prepared materials are suitable for fabrication of cathode, as lithium ions can intercalate and de-intercalate. LiNiO₂ …

Empirical Model For The Variarion In Concentration Of Metal Ions During A Precipitation Event, David M. Chittenden Ii, Julie D. Chittenden
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The concentration of a pollutant in an air mass and the concentration of that pollutant in a series of rain water samples from a single event within that air mass, fluctuate during the course of the event. This the result of scavenging, diffusion, and advection processes. A simple mathematical model, containing only a scavenging term has had limited success in describing changes of concentration in rain water. To date, no attempt has been made to include diffusion or advection terms in the model. In this study, a two factor model was developed after determining that (1) the exponential scavenging term …

Moisture Determination By Thermal Titrimetry Using The Enthalpy Of Reaction Of 2,2-Dimethoxypropane With Water, Edmond W. Wilson Jr., Reagan Baber
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Assays for water content can be readily and simply carried out using the technique of thermal titrations. The method is based on measuring the endothermic heat of reaction exhibited when 2,2-dimethoxypropane is brought into contact with water in the presence of an acid catalyst. The apparatus is simple, requiring a constant delivery rate buret, a recording thermistor thermometer, and a stirred, thermally insulated reaction container. The 2,2-dimethoxypropane reagent used for the water assays is environmentally friendly ("green"). It is stable, pleasant smelling and economical. Working curves in three solvents, acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran and 1,4-dioxane, show excellent precision and linearity with increasing …

Bioelectrics Publications
By applying electrical pulses of 20 ns duration to xenon microplasmas, generated by direct current microhollow cathode discharges, we were able to increase the xenon excimer emission by more than an order of magnitude over direct current discharge excimer emission. For pulsed voltages in excess of 500 V, the optical power at 172 nm was found to increase exponentially with voltage. Largest values obtained were 2.75 W of vacuum-ultraviolet optical power emitted from a single microhollow cathode discharge in 400 Torr xenon with a 750 V pulse applied to a discharge. Highest radiative emittance was 15.2 W/cm2. The …

Voltammetric And Polarographic Studies Of Eriochrome Black T - Nickel(Ii) Complex, Osman Çakir, Emi̇ne Ertürk Coşkun, Ender Bi̇çer, Semi̇ha Çakir
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The electrochemical behaviour of complexes of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) with Ni(II) was studied. It was observed that EBT forms 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with Ni(II) in 0.1 M phosphate buffer at pH 6.0 by using Square-wave voltammetry (SWV), Cyclic voltammetry (CV), Direct Current Polarography (Sampled DCP) and Controlled Potential Coulometry (CPC). It was found that the reduction processes of Ni(II)-EBT complexes are irreversible. The stability constants of the Ni(II)-EBT complexes were evaluated with the DeFord-Hume procedure at different ligand concentrations using SWV. The logarithm values of stability constants of 1:1 and 1:2 Ni(II)-EBT complexes are 8.17 and 11.17, respectively.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The cycloaddition reactions of cis-3,8-dicarbomethoxy-3,8-dihydroheptalene cis-2 and trans-3,8-dicarbomethoxy-3,8-dihydroheptalene trans-2 with various dienophiles such as dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD), p-benzoquinone, maleic anhydride, tetracyanoethylene, naphtoquinone gave monoaddition products 15-23. Further addition of benzyne and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to 18 resulted in the formation of the compounds syn-25 and syn-26 having pyramidalized double bonds. The addition of benzyne to 21 and the addition of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate to 21, 22 and 23 gave the anti configuration products anti-26, 27 and 28, respectively. X-ray structures of syn-25, syn-26 and anti-26 show the pyramidalized angles to be 16.5^o, 19.9^o and 8.0^o, respectively.

Secondary Amine Mediated Ring-Opening Of Tetrahydroimidazo[1,5- B ][1,2,4]Oxadiazol-2(1 H )-Ones, Necdet Coşkun
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
5,6,7,7a-Tetrahydroimidazo [1,5- b ][1,2,4]oxadiazol-2(1 H )-ones 1a-g converted to imidazoles in the presence of secondary amines. cis-Imidazooxadiazolones 1d-g gave the imidazoles 4d-g when treated with secondary amines, while the treatment of these compounds with tertiary amines afforded imidazoline 3-oxides 5d-g. In case of 1a-c, where R^1 is a hydrogen, tertiary amines induced elimination to give imidazoles 4a-c. In the case of 1a-c, probable trans elimination caused by triethylamine and pyridine and in the case of 1d-f, a concerted double cis elimination mediated by secondary amines is discussed.

A Kinetic Study Of The Photolysis Of Tris(2,4-Pentanedionato)Cobalt(Iii) And Bis(2,4-Pentanedionato)Cobalt(Ii) In Chloroform, Son L. Phan, Keith J. Cendak, Patrick E. Hoggard
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Under 254nm irradiation in chloroform, Co(acac)3 (Hacac = 2,4-pentanedione) is converted to Co(acac)2 and then to CoCl2. The metal complex is the primary photoactive species in the photoreduction of Co(acac)3, but the photosubstitution of Co(acac)2 appears to occur primarily through absorption of light by the solvent, followed by a chain reaction in which chlorine atoms displace pentanedionyl radicals. The photosubstitution rate law is complex, and the apparent quantum yield (based on total light absorbed) varies with incident light intensity and Co(acac)2 concentration, reaching values as high as 16 under the conditions of …

Evidence For A Hybrid Ping Pong-Semirandom Mechanism For Human Jejunal Glutathione Disulfide Reductase, Nazmi̇ Özer, İzzet Hamdi̇ Öğüş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Initial rate versus substrate concentration, [S], profiles (at pH 7.4, 37^oC) for human jejunal glutathione disulfide reductase indicated partial substrate inhibition by GSSG at fixed [NADPH] \le 40 \mu M. Saturation by NADPH assumed an increasingly sigmoidal character at fixed [GSSG] \ge 20 \mu M. The results were interpreted in terms of a hybrid ping pong-semirandom mechanism proceeding through both E.NADPH (ping pong pathway) and E.GSSG (ordered pathway) complexes. When V(apparent) versus [GSSG] and [NADPH] were plotted, hyperbolic curves were obtained. Plotting 1/Vm(apparent) versus 1/[NADPH] and 1/[GSSG] yielded two lines with different slopes but intersecting at the same point on …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Copper(Ii), Nickel(Ii), Cadmium(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Zinc(Ii) Complexes With 2-Benzoyl-3-Hydroxy-1-Naphthylamino-3-Phenyl-2-Propen-1-On, Mehmet Sönmez
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes of 2-Benzoyl-3-hydroxy-1-naphthylamino-3-phenyl-2-propen-1-on, which is a derivative of carboxamide, were prepared and characterized by elemental, spectral and magnetic methods. Based on the analytical results, electronic and infrared spectral data and magnetic susceptibility measurements, suitable structures have been proposed. The formation of the complexes in solution was investigated conductometrically. 2-Benzoyl-3-hydroxy-1-naphthylamino-3-phenyl-2-propen-1-on was found to be a bidentate ligand coordinating through enolic oxygen and amide nitrogen. The complexes of Co(II) and Ni(II) are proposed to have an octahedral structure, while Cd(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) are suggested to possess a square-planar environment in the complexes.

Reaction Mechanism And Kinetics Of Aqueous Solutions Of 2-Amino -2 Methyl-1,3- Propanediol And Carbonyl Sulphide, Erdoğan Alper
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The mechanism and kinetics of the reaction between aqueous solutions of COS and a sterically hindered primary amine, 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (AMPD), were investigated at 288-303 K using a stopped-flow technique. It was found that the reaction order according to power law kinetics was between 1.12 and 1.16 for an amine concentration range of 0.5 to 1.5 kmol m^{-3} . This overall order indicated that the thiocarbamate formation was complex and possibly involved a zwitterion intermediate. However, the experimental results can also be explained in terms of a single-step termolecular reaction mechanism. The kinetic rate parameters for aqueous AMPD solutions were obtained …
