Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Primary and secondary alcohols were transformed in high yield to corresponding iodides by 4-chloro-3,5-dioxaphosphacyclohepta [2,1-\alpha; 3,4-\alpha'] dinaphthalene (BINOL-PCl) at room temperature. The tertiary alcohols formed corresponding alkenes by stereo- and/or regioselective elimination reactions. (E)-1,2-Diphenyl-1-propene and 2,3-diphenyl-1-propene were stereoselectively obtained from 1,2-diphenyl-2-propanol, as representative. No (Z)-1,2-diphenyl-1-propene was observed. 2-Methyl-1-phenylcyclopentene and 3-methyl-2-phenylcyclopentene were regioselectively obtained from 2-methyl-1-phenylcyclopentanol. ^{13}C chemical shifts for the \alpha-methylene carbon of some alkyl iodides empirically calculated through a very simple additive relationship lead to similar or even better values than the reported values. All primary alkyl iodides showed the iodine heavy atom effect on the \alpha-methylene carbon chemical …

Hydrogen Storage Via Physisorption: The Combined Role Of Adsorption Enthalpy And Entropy, Carlos Otero Arean, Barbara Bonelli, Montserrat Rodriguez Delgado, Edoardo Garrone

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Materials capable of cost-effective on-board hydrogen storage and delivery are currently being sought worldwide as a means to facilitate a hydrogen-based energy transition in the transportation sector. Among the solutions proposed, hydrogen storage by physisorption on porous solids constitutes a main avenue of research, and for intelligent design of such materials a detailed knowledge of gas adsorption thermodynamics is of the utmost importance. Analysis of the available data for hydrogen adsorption on alkali and alkaline-earth cation exchanged zeolites clearly shows that standard adsorption enthalpy (\Delta H^0) and entropy (\Delta S^0) are correlated, in the sense that larger \Delta S^0 values …

Dynamic ^1h-Nmr Demonstration Of Anomeric Effect And Structure: Conformational And Configurational Analysis Of N-2-(1,4-Dioxane)-N'-(P-Methylbenzenesulfonyl)- O-(P-Methylphenoxy) İsourea, Ali Reza Modarresi-Alam, Hossein A. Dabbagh Jan 2009

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The conformational and configurational behavior and the structure of N-2-(1,4-dioxane)-N'-(p-methylbenzenesulfonyl)-O- (p-methylphenoxy) isourea (1) were studied using dynamic NMR. The endo-anomeric effect, hydrogen bonding, temperature, and polarity of solvent control the population of dioxane ring conformers or anomers but not the configuration interconversion of the imine of the imidoyl moiety. Dynamic ^1H-NMR, \Delta H°, \Delta S°, \Delta G°, and \Delta G^{\ddag} analysis of 1 demonstrates that the dioxane ring adopts the chair conformation, that the imidoyl amino group prefers axial conformation, and that the tosyl and tolyl groups about the C=N bond retain the E configuration.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The synthesis and photophysical properties of an asymmetrically substituted perylene-bis(dicarboximide), (PDI), system (1) containing a methylene bridged 4-methoxy-benzene donor and a solubilizing branched C_{13} alkyl chain are described. As compared to most PDIs, the fluorescence of 1 is strongly quenched in polar (but not in non-polar) solvents due to a photo-induced electron transfer process. Transient absorption spectroscopy and time resolved emission in e.g. acetonitrile indicates that upon excitation the radical anion of the PDI is formed with a rate of ca. 3.5 \times 10^9s^{-1}, and the charge transfer state has a lifetime of ca. 3 ns. A Frontier Molecular Orbital …

A New Approach To The Calculation Of N-15 Chemical Shifts Of Cyclic Compounds, Emad A. S. Al-Hyali

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Two sets of additive parameters used previously for the calculation of C-13 chemical shifts of mono and poly six-membered cycloalkanes were applied for the prediction of N-15 chemical shifts of some methyl piperidine derivatives. These sets are based on 2 principles: the p-character (substituents electronic effect) of the atom under consideration and the steric effect that reflects the spatial arrangement of the molecule. An additional parameter, namely the ring angle of the studied atom, was added to the other parameters to define the structural distortion that is due to large steric interactions. The p-character in set (1) is represented by …

Partial Regeneration Of Ni-Based Catalysts For Hydrogen Production Via Methane Cracking, Reyyan Koç, Erdoğan Alper, Eric Croiset, Ali Elkamel Jan 2008

Partial Regeneration Of Ni-Based Catalysts For Hydrogen Production Via Methane Cracking, Reyyan Koç, Erdoğan Alper, Eric Croiset, Ali Elkamel

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Methane cracking has the potential to produce high purity, carbon monoxide-free hydrogen suitable for application in PEM fuel cells. The 2 products of the reaction are molecular hydrogen and solid carbon. The carbon appears in the form of carbon filaments whose growth is hindered by carbon encapsulation leading to total deactivation of the catalyst. Several attempts have been made to regenerate the catalyst, mainly by gasifying the carbon filament in air or steam. Our work on 5-wt% Ni/\gamma-Al_2O_3 indicated that after complete gasification of the carbon the catalyst lost nearly all its activity toward methane cracking. However, if the gasification …

Orthogonal Signal Correction -- Partial Least Squares Method For Simultaneous Spectrophotometric Determination Of Nickel, Cobalt, And Zinc, Ali Niazi, Amir Azizi

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The simultaneous determination of nickel, cobalt, and zinc mixtures by spectrophotometric method is a difficult problem in analytical chemistry, due to spectral interferences. By multivariate calibration methods, such as partial least squares (PLS) regression, it is possible to obtain a model adjusted to the concentration values of the mixtures used in the calibration range. Orthogonal signal correction (OSC) is a preprocessing technique used for removing the information unrelated to the target variables based on constrained principal component analysis. OSC is a suitable preprocessing method for partial least squares calibration of mixtures without loss of prediction capacity using spectrophotometric method. In …

New organotin(IV) complexes with 2-[(2',6'-diethylphenylamido)] benzoic acid (HL^1) and 3-[(2',6' -diethylphenylamido)]propanoic acid (HL^2) were synthesized by the reaction of di- and triorganotin salts in the presence of triethylamine as base or dioctyltin oxide using a Dean and Stark trap for the removal of azeotropic water. All complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR, NMR, and mass spectral studies, and proof that tin-ligand coordination involves only the carboxylate group and complexes show hexa-coordinated geometry in solid state. Multinuclear NMR data show that triorganotin complexes exhibit 4-coordinated geometry while diorganotin complexes show a coordination number greater than 4, probably 5 or 6 …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Polyamide And Polyhydrazides Based On The 6,6´-Disubstituted-2,2´-Bipyridine, Abdurrahman Şengül, Hülya Arslan

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The monomers namely 6,6'-dicarbonylchloride-2,2'-bipyridine (1) and 6,6'-dihydrazine-2,2'-bipyridine (2) were synthesized and characterized thoroughly. The polyhydrazides (PHZ1 and PHZ2) were obtained by direct polycondensation of 2 with terephtaloylchloride (TPCl}), and novel polyamide (PA1) by direct polycondensation of 1 with hexametyhlenediamine (HMDA}). Polymers with low PDIs were generated in all cases (PD \sim 1.02-1.3). The polymers were characterized by ^1H and ^{13}C NMR, FT-IR, and Gel Permission Chromatography (GPC).
