The photostabilization of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) films by 2-thioacetic acid-5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole with Sn(II), Ba(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), and Ca(II) complexes was investigated. PVC films containing different concentrations of complexes ranging from 0.1% to 0.5% by weight were produced by the same casting method from THF solvent. The photostabilization activities of these compounds were determined by monitoring the carbonyl and polyene indices with irradiation time. The changes in viscosity average molecular weight of PVC with irradiation time were also tracked (using THF as a solvent). Six new poly (amide-imide)s (6a-f) were prepared under microwave irradiation by polycondensation reaction of diacid chloride (4) with 6 different derivatives of hydantoins (5a-f) using O-cresol as a microwave absorbent. These new PAIs were obtained in high yield and with inherent viscosities between 0.15 and 0.25 dL/g. The resulting poly(amide-imide)s were characterized by elemental analysis, viscosity measurements, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA & DTG), solubility test, and FT-IR spectroscopy. A single-crystal Au(111) electrode was used for the simultaneous determination of dopamine (DA) and ascorbic acid (AA) in a phosphate buffer solution at pH 6.9. The single-crystal Au(111) electrode displayed excellent electrocatalytic activity for DA and AA oxidation in comparison to a Au disk electrode. Although the anodic peaks of both reagents overlapped on the Au disk electrode, the anodic peak potentials of DA and AA in their mixture were well separated since the peak potential of AA was shifted to more negative values by cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry. The present paper reports results of the thermodynamic study of adsorption of 2 optical brighteners (Tinopal UP and Leucophor AP) on pulp. The entropy non-homogeneity of the pulp surface was confirmed and the coefficients of entropy non-homogeneity were determined. The entropy effect on the variation of Gibbs free energy of the process studied was followed.

Arsenic(III) tripyrazolinates and bismuth(III) tripyrazolinates of the type M(C_{15}H_{12}N_2OX)_3 [where C_{15}H_{12}N_2OX = 3(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-5-(4-substituted phenyl)pyrazoline] have been synthesized by the reaction of MCl_3 and sodium salt of pyrazolines in 1:3 molar ratio in anhydrous benzene at elevated temperature. The transesterification of canola oil with methanol was studied in a heterogeneous system, using \gamma-Al_2O_3 supported alkaline catalysts. All the catalysts were prepared by incipient-wetness impregnation of an aqueous solution of alkaline compounds on \gamma-Al_2O_3 support. The effects of alkaline compound, methanol/canola oil molar ratio, reaction temperature, catalyst amount, and reaction time in biodiesel production were investigated. The catalyst with KOH loaded on \gamma-Al_2O_3 gave the highest basicity and the best catalytic activity for this reaction. The highest FAME yield obtained was 89.40%.

A dithienylpyrrole-BODIPY based donor-acceptor system with 1,4-phenylene spacer as a model system for energy transfer was designed and synthesized. Absorption and emission spectra have revealed an efficient resonance energy transfer from dithienylpyrrole as donor to BODIPY as acceptor.

A functional membrane, composed of the nanoparticles of methylene blue (MB) and Nafion, was constructed during the present study. The materials were characterized by the methods of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Visible and FT-IR. The average diameter of new nano-particles was estimated to be about 60 nm. A novel Nafion-riboflavin membrane was also constructed and characterized by the methods of SEM, TEM and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The voltammetric behaviour of acetazolamide, the systemic carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, in the presence of some metal ions (Cu(II), Ni(II), and V(V)) were investigated using square-wave and cyclic voltammetry in physiological pH (pH 7.4). Square-wave voltammogram of acetazolamide in the absence of metal ions gave only 1 reduction peak at -1.65 V attributed to a catalytic hydrogen peak. Three reversible peaks at -0.068, -0.262, and -0.434 V were observed for the solutions containing both copper(II) ions and acetazolamide in the SWV. The peak at -0.434 V was attributed to Cu(II)-acetazolamide complex. In the presence of acetazolamide, copper-acetazolamide complex formation was proved …

The selective CO oxidation over Pt-Co/Al_2O_3 catalyst in hydrogen-rich streams was studied in the presence of Ce, Mg, Mn, Ze, and Fe as the second promoters. The catalysts were prepared using incipient to wetness co-impregnation, and tested in a microflow reaction system. The effects of the second promoter were investigated in near 100% CO conversion conditions both in the absence and presence of CO_2 and H_2O in the feed. 100% CO conversion was obtained with the addition of each second promoter at 110 °C while Pt-Co/Al_2O_3 catalyst had 96%-98% CO conversion. Kinetics of low-temperature CO oxidation was studied under atmospheric pressure at 383 K in the initial rates region over 1wt%Pt-1wt%CeO_x supported on air-oxidized activated carbon (AC2). Feed concentrations of 1-5 mol% CO and 1-2.5 mol% O_2 with balance He were used for CO oxidation in the absence of hydrogen. A simple power-function rate expression was obtained with reaction orders of -0.24 in CO and 0.98 in O_2, and a plausible LHHW expression compatible with mechanisms reported in the literature was proposed. A substituted amide of pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid was prepared and the IR spectrum was recorded and analysed. The compound prepared was identified by NMR and mass spectra. The vibrational frequencies of the title compound were computed using the Hartree-Fock level of theory using the 6-31G* basis set and compared with the experimental data. The red shift of the NH stretching frequency indicates weakening of the NH bond. The splitting of the NH stretching bond is due to Davidov coupling between neighbouring units. The synthesis and characterization of a polycarbonate of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene 4 are reported. It was synthesized by condensation of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arenetetraol derivative 3 with ethyl chloroformate. This new polymer possesses a hydrolyzable backbone and tunable hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties. The experimental results indicate that the polycarbonate was successfully synthesized with average molecular weight \overline{M}_{w}, (2.328 \times 10^4 g/mol), which was determined by static light scattering method using a Berry plot. An efficient synthetic method for 1,4-dihydropyridines has been developed using 3 or 4 component condensation reactions of aldehydes, 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, and ammonium acetate in the presence of alumina sulfuric acid catalyst in minimum methanol at reflux temperature. This procedure offers several advantages including high yields, an environmentally friendly procedure, short reaction times, and a simple work-up procedure.

A method for the preparation of magnetite/chitosan composite nanoparticles was developed. Colloidal magnetite particles (Fe_3O_4 produced by co-precipitation and stabilized in suspension by adding a non-ionic surfactant (Pluronic F127) were subsequently covered with a layer of chitosan (CS) prepared by ionotropic gelation using sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) as a crosslinking agent. The products were characterized in terms of the following parameters: size distribution and \zeta-potential (by laser diffraction analysis), surface morphology (TEM), composition (FTIR, elemental analysis), magnetic properties (magnetic susceptibility analysis), and concentration of surface functional groups (potentiometric titration). High purity, carbon monoxide-free hydrogen and filamentous carbon can be produced by thermo-catalytic cracking of methane. Carbon filaments continue to grow until the catalyst deactivates because of carbon encapsulation. Regeneration of catalyst is important to maintain a continuous process. Our work on optimization of the partial regeneration method showed that activity of the catalyst can be sustained for longer times by gasifying not all but some extent of the deposited carbon. New thermally stable photochromic fulgimides and benzimidazole[1,2-a]pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives of furylfulgide and thienylfulgide were prepared and their photochromic properties were investigated. Thermal stabilities of some of the new isomers in an alcoholic solution and in PMMA (poly(methyl methacrylate)) polymer films, and pyrolytic behaviors in inert atmosphere with TGA were compared. The colored form of fulgimide and that of benzimidazole[1,2-a]pyrrolidin- 2-one derivatives showed large bathochromic shifts for visible absorption maximum compared with the colored form of corresponding fulgides. The imides and benzimidazole[1,2-a]pyrrolidin-2-one derivatives of fulgide displayed better thermal stability than corresponding fulgides.

An ultra-sensitive and highly selective non-extractive spectrophotometric method is presented for the rapid determination of iron(II) at trace levels using 2', 3, 4', 5, 7-Pentahydroxyflavone (morin) as a new spectrophotometric reagent in slightly acidic solution (0.0001-0.0002 M H_2SO_4). The reaction is instantaneous and absorbance remains stable for over 24 h (\lambda_{max} = 415 nm). The molar absorptivity was found to be 6.85 \times 10^4 L mol^{-1} cm^{-1}. Linear calibration graphs were obtained for 0.01-10 \mu g mL^{-1} of Fe^{II}. The stoichiometric composition of the chelate is 1:2 (Fe:morin). Nickel ferrite, Ni_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4, NPs (where x = 0.0, 0.6 and 1.0) were successfully synthesized by a rapid and reproducible CTAB-assisted hydrothermal route. The influence of different hydrolyzing agents on the particle size and magnetic behavior of Ni_xCo_{1-x}Fe_2O_4 NPs was investigated. Particles showed very high phase purity and crystallinity in powder XRD analysis. Compositions of Co, Fe, and Ni in fabricated powders were also determined by AAS and results are in very good agreement with the targeted compositions. A new tetraoxime, (H_4L), was prepared in EtOH by reacting biphenyl-3,3´,4,4´-tetramine with butane-2,3-dione oxime. The tetraoxime ligand was characterized by elemental analyses, H-NMR and ^{13}C-NMR, IR, and mass spectral studies. Dinuclear copper(II), nickel(II) and tetranuclear copper(II) complexes of tetraoxime ligand were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic moments, IR, and mass spectral studies. In the dinuclear metal complexes, metal:ligand ratio was found as 2:1. Elemental analyses and stoichiometric and spectroscopic data of the metal complexes indicated that the metal ions were coordinated to the nitrogen atoms of oxime groups (C=N). A Mild Method For The Cleavage Of Ketals Using Ibx, Abdul Rauf Raza

Investigation on the total synthesis of batrachotoxin 1 revealed that the cyclic ketals could be cleaved to ketone with IBX in DMSO at 70-81 °C under very mild conditions. A variety of functional groups showed no interference under these conditions except vinyl bromides, which, in fact, inhibits the single electron transfer to IBX.

2,5-Dioxo-4,4-diphenylimidazolidine-1-carboxylic acid (2) was reacted with methyl ester of different amino acids (1a-c) and substituted benzhydrols (3a-b) in pyridine and in the presence of N,N dicyclohexyl carbodiimide (DCC) to yield a series of the title compounds, methyl 2-(2,5-dioxo-4,4-diphenylimidazolidine-1-carboxamido) substituted propanoate (4a-c) and benzhydryl 2,5-dioxo-4,4-diphenyl imidazolidine-1-carboxylate (5a-b). The structures of these compounds were established on the basis of their spectral (IR, ^1H-NMR) data. These newly synthesized derivatives of phenytoin were evaluated in terms of anticonvulsant activity.

An efficient synthesis of amidoalkyl naphthols using silica supported sodium hydrogen sulphate as heterogeneous catalyst under a thermal solvent-free green procedure is described. This simple protocol offer advantages such as shorter reaction times, simple work-up, excellent yield, and recovery and reusability of the catalyst.

Electrochemical And Optical Properties Of An Azo Dye Based Conducting Copolymer, Ati̇lla Ci̇haner, Fati̇h Algi

The electrochemical and optical properties of a novel conducting copolymer called poly(2,5'-dimethyl-[4-(2,5-di-thiophen- 2-yl-pyrrol-1-yl)-phenyl]azobenzene-co-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)) (poly(1-co-EDOT)) are reported. Electrochemically synthesized poly(1-co-EDOT) based on the azo dye has a well-defined and reversible redox couple (0.37 V vs. Ag/AgCl) with good cycle stability. The copolymer film exhibits high conductivity (13 S/cm) as well as electrochromic behavior (magenta when neutralized and transmissive sky blue when oxidized). Furthermore, electro-optically active copolymer film has a low band gap of 1.79 eV with a \pi-\pi* transition at 555 nm.

We report a short and efficient 3-component reaction for synthesis of a series of [1,2-b]pyrrole derivatives from ninhydrin, alkyl propiolates, and simple primary amines under solvent free and microwave irradiation. This method provides a new route to produce pyrrole derivatives in good to excellent yields.

Free radical photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) initiated by 2-mercaptothioxanthone (TX-SH), thioxanthone-thioacetic acid (TXSCH_2COOH), and thioxanthone-carboxymethoxy acetic acid (TXOCH_2COOH) as so called one-component initiators was performed with and without an external magnetic field (MF). These initiators contain light-absorbing and electron/hydrogen-donating fragments in one molecule and do not require an additional hydrogen donor, and initiate the polymerization of MMA in the air. Polymerization experiments were performed in solutions with 3 different optical densities at \lambda 365 nm, where the photoinitiator absorbs.
