Epoxide hydrolases (EHs) are enzymes that catalyze the ring opening of an epoxide, yielding a vicinal diol. This exciting class of enzymes is often associated with natural product and small molecule biosynthesis. One interesting class of natural products that epoxide hydrolases are involved in the biosynthesis of is the enediynes. Previously, 5 enediyne-associated epoxide hydrolases have been characterized, revealing an inverting-versus-retaining paradigm for enediyne epoxide hydrolases. The work described herein sets the table for future studies involving the probing of the α/β-epoxide hydrolase mechanism for styrene oxide. Numerous studies have been conducted on the removal of inorganic phosphorus (P) from wastewater, but a push towards lower effluent targets necessitates the additional removal of organic phosphorus as well. This study tested the ability of manganese oxide nanoparticles and iron oxide as potential catalysts for conversion of organic P into more readily removable inorganic forms, as well as the role of iron(III) chloride as coagulant to subsequently allow P to be removed by solids/liquid separation. Removals of 99-101% were obtained for model compounds at pH 5-7, 0.05-0.5 M H2O2, and Fe:P molar ratio of 5:1. …

Alkane thiols, RSH, are commonly used in aqueous solution to stabilize and prevent aggregation of gold clusters, Aun. Initially a RSH-Aun complex is formed and, subsequently, there is hydrogen atom transfer to form a RSAunH complex. We examine the rate of this reaction for small neutral gold clusters, with n=1-2 and short-chain thiols with R = H, CH3, and CH3CH2, using transition state theory. Little is known about the surface chemistry of organoarsenic compounds with iron-containing materials commonly found in geosorbents and arsenic removal technologies. In this thesis, these organoarsenicals include aliphatic and aromatic arsenicals that historically have been used as herbicides, pesticides and in the poultry feed industry, respectively. Attenuated total internal reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy has been used to study the surface interactions of organoarsenicals at the molecular level under various environmentally-relevant conditions. Kinetic and thermodynamic parameters extracted from these molecular level experiments provide trends that are not observed in any published bulk experiments. In this thesis, the synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of a series of novel dibenz[a,c]anthracenes are reported. Specifically, two dibenzanthracenecarboxylate derivatives were prepared and were found not to exhibit a mesophase. In contrast, a series of novel N-substituted dibenzanthracenedicarboximides was also synthesized and found to exhibit broad columnar temperature ranges. Several dibenzanthracenedicarboximides substituted with different alkyl chains on the nitrogen atom were prepared and their mesomorphic temperature ranges were characterized. In general, it was found that having a longer, more flexible alkyl chain on the nitrogen atom resulted in a broadening of the columnar temperature range via a lowering …

In this thesis we study relative equilibria of di-atomic and isosceles tri-atomic molecules in classical approximations with repulsive-attractive interaction. For di-atomic systems we retrieve well-known results. The main contribution consists of the study of the existence and stability of relative equilibria in a three-atom system formed by two identical atoms of mass $m$ and a third of mass $m_3$, constrained in an isosceles configuration at all times.

Given the shape of the binary potential only, we discuss the existence of equilibria and relative equilibria. We represent the results in the form of energy-momentum diagrams. We find that fixing the masses …

Current regulations for sensitive receiving waters are approaching the limit of technology for phosphorus removal and improved methods are required. Existing methods target removal of the orthophosphate form of phosphorus, but to achieve low effluent limits other non-reactive (NRP) forms, such as condensed phosphate and organic phosphorus, must be removed as well. This could be accomplished by developing a quaternary step in wastewater treatment that utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) followed by advanced oxidation processes (AOP) on the produced brine (RO concentrate). The speciation of copper plays a strong role in determining bioavailability and toxicity upon copper exposure in marine environments. This thesis reports key findings in the synthesis and transformation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with pentagonal symmetries. The main focus of the thesis work is on the synthesis of silver decahedral nanoparticles (AgDeNPs) and their transformation into larger AgDeNPs and silver pentagonal rod nanoparticles (AgPRNPs). In another direction, produced AgNPs were stabilized by gold plating. In a one-stage photochemical synthesis of AgDeNPs (pentagonal bipyramid, J13 solid), oxidative etching by hydrogen peroxide was implemented to achieve complete conversion of the small silver platelet precursor NPs. In this thesis, the synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of a series of novel substituted dibenz[a,c]anthracenes is reported. Specifically, a series of hexaalkoxydibenz[a,c]anthracenes were prepared and found not to exhibit a mesophase. In contrast, when substituents are introduced on the aromatic core, columnar mesophases are observed over broad temperature ranges. A series substituted derivatives was prepared and their mesomorphic properties compared. In general, electron-withdrawing substituents promote broad mesophase temperature ranges, as do larger substituents. The liquid crystalline phase is a result of the electronic effects, size and shape of the substituents in the 10 and 13 positions.

To achieve the low levels of total phosphorus required in wastewater treatment plant effluent all chemical forms of phosphorus should be removed. The most refractory phosphorus in terms of removal is so-called “organic phosphorus”. This thesis explores potential relationships between dissolved organic matter and organic phosphorus and methods of removing organic phosphorus from waste water. Fluorescence spectroscopy will be used to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM) in wastewater. The binding of metal to dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments is important in controlling the bioavailability and potential toxicity of metals such as Zn2+, Pb2+, Ni2+ and Cu2+. Dimethylarsinic Acid (DMA) or (CH3)2AsO2H is an important organoarsenical compound detected in arsenic speciation studies of environmental samples and synthesized during pyrolysis of oil shale. DMA was used historically as a herbicide on large agricultural fields and can be detected in the leachates of landfills rich in waste containing arsenic such as glass, alloys, and semiconductors, as well as biologically pre-treated municipal solid waste. An investigation of cause was started in the 1990s at a bleached Kraft mill (BKM), located in Saint John NB, Canada. The 5th effect chemical recovery condensates waste stream (derived from wastewater generated during the pulping process) was identified as having the greatest potential for affecting mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus), compared to the rest of the inmill waste streams. A solid phase extraction (SPE) protocol was utilized to isolate the causative chemicals in the condensate stream. Newer to this field are Microporous Organic Polymers (MOPs) which are networks constructed from smaller organic building blocks and exhibit large surface areas, small pore sizes and low densities.
