The ultraviolet absorption spectra of a number of aryl phosphines and amines and transition metal complexes of triphenylphosphine have been determined. These data indicate that the intensity of the Õ* ¬ Õ phenyl ring transition is not only sensitive to the central atom attached to the ring but is also affected by the metal ion in the complex. Since the degree of covalency depends on the degree of back donation, the oxidation state of the metal ion was found to be the most important factor in determining the intensity of the absorption. Within the past few years kinetic studies of NADP+- specific isocitrate dehydrogenase have been conducted extensively following isolation from bacteria, yeast and vertebrates. However, the kinetic properties of NADP+ - specific isocitrate dehydrogenase have not been adequately characterized in filamentous fungi. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to examine the kinetic behavior of partially purified NADP+ - specific isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme isolated from Phycomyces blakesleeanus.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the reactions of sodium naphthalenide with various carbonyl and acyl compounds. J. W. Stinnett, Jr. investigated aspects of the reactions of carbonyl compounds and that study was expanded. The major emphasis, however, was to extend the investigation to the reactions of esters. With regard to the reactions of esters, it was thought that sodium naphthalenide might provide a synthetic advantage, as compared to the sodium metal solutions, in the reduction of the acyl compounds to their corresponding acyloins.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the reactions of sodium naphthaienide with various aromatic carbonyl compounds, particularly aromatic aldehydes and ketones. Although sodium naphthalenide was first investigated in 1936 by Scott et al, the synthetic utility of this alkali metal adduct in organic chemistry has only recently been explored. It was thought that sodium naphthalenide might provide a synthetic advantage, as compared to sodium metal solutions, in the reduction of carbonyl functions to their respective glycols and/or alcohols.

This research was part of a project underway at Barren River and Nolin River Reservoirs in south-central Kentucky. The research was partially supported by a grant through the Sport Fishing Institute, Washington, D.C.
The study reported herein was concerned with the analysis of trace metal concentrations in the two reservoirs. It is believed that the fish population may in part depend upon the trace metals present in the water.
