At present, the best method for the quantitative determination of phosphates is the long gravimetric procedure known as the phospho-molybdate method. Theoretically, a volumetric method using alkalimetry and acidimetry techniques should be applicable. One of the Easiest ways of preparing new esters is by heating an ester with another alcohol which frequently permits transfer of the acid radical from the original ester to the added alcohol, thous forming a new ester and liberating the other alcohol. Preparation of triglycerides of unsaturated fatty acids of 18 carbon atoms is hampered by the fact that prolonged heating in the usual ester formation methods causes both polymerization and condensation among acid radicals unless oxygen is carefully excluded from the reaction atmosphere. An investigation of the phenyl urethans of saturated, aliphatic, liquid alcohols disclosed that there was a great discrepancy in the literature with regard to the melting points of these compounds. It was also found that the preparations of the phenyl urethans were either vague or specific for a few selected alcohols.
The purpose of this thesis was to prepare these derivatives in the laboratory in order to compare the melting points found to those in the literature.

- To determine the feasibility of using gelatin as a substrate for hyaluronidase.

While engaged in the preparation of alcohol derivatives during a course in the characterization of organic compounds, the writer noticed in a chemical catalog that various chlorobenzoyl chlorides are now available commercially. Since many of the present reagents for the preparation of alcohol derivatives are deficient in at least one respect, it seemed to be a worthwhile project to prepare alkyl chlorobenzoates by the ·action of these substituted benzoyl chlorides on alcohols. A study of the physical properties of these chlorobenzoates would then be undertaken to determine the feasibility of using them as alcohol derivatives.

After reading the Masters Thesis of Mr. Herman L. Karl, the writer became interested in this problem and then took · up the study of the proteolytic activity of normal urine. Mr. Karl worked on the urine of pregnant women. Using gelatin as a substrate, he hoped to find a difference in proteolytic activity between the urine of a woman pregnant with a male fetus and the urine of a woman pregnant with a female fetus. His results were not conclusive but suggested that the problem of proteolytic action of urine should be studied under normal conditions.
