A Cytolocical Study Of The 4th Chromosome Of Eyeless Drosophila, Joyce Ruth Soelch May 1943

A Cytolocical Study Of The 4th Chromosome Of Eyeless Drosophila, Joyce Ruth Soelch

Bachelors’ Theses

In Drosophila Melanogaster the recessive gene for eyeless and its normal allelomorph, which cause in general a redaction of the size of the eye in the adult fly, are situated in the small 4th chromosome. The purpose of this experiment was to make a Cyto- logical study and comparison of the 4th chromosomes of the eyeless Drosophila and the normal plus or wild type to determine whether this recessive gene, located on the 4th chromosome, results in a difference in the number, size, formation, or location of bands.

A Suggested Method For The Measurement Of Unsaturation In Organic Compounds By Means Of A Hydrogen Number, Richard Roberts May 1943

A Suggested Method For The Measurement Of Unsaturation In Organic Compounds By Means Of A Hydrogen Number, Richard Roberts

Bachelors’ Theses

The measurement of unsaturation in organic compounds are commonly expressed in terms of an iodine number, but as this value is not trustworthy in a number of cases, it has been suggested by earlier worker that an indication of unsaturation could be obtained by the quantitative hydrogenation of a compound and expressing the result in terms of a hydrogen number. Although such determinations have been previously made, usually at elevated temperatures and pressures, it is the purpose of this work to carry out the hydrogenation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. For purposes of comparison, determinations will be made at …

A Viscometric Determination Of The Diastatic Effect Of Amylase On Starches, Dawn Marie Ehlert May 1943

A Viscometric Determination Of The Diastatic Effect Of Amylase On Starches, Dawn Marie Ehlert

Bachelors’ Theses

Internal friction causes some liquids to flow with less freedom than true solutions of the same density. or with less freedom than water. This is attributed in part to larger particle size and prompts one to propose that when using solutions in which the dissolved substance has not been dispersed and subdivided to single molecular particles that the dissolved particles may be present as combinations. These combinations may increase to enlarged dimensions with changes in temperature, density. electric charges. etc. Similar conditions are characteristic o starch solutions. The solutions are colloidal and vary in particle size. In some situations the …

On The Production Of Polyploidy With Paradichlorbenzene, Mary Anne Carey Apr 1943

On The Production Of Polyploidy With Paradichlorbenzene, Mary Anne Carey

Bachelors’ Theses

The subject of polyploidy has been of scientific interest for some time. The true nature of the cause of this phenomenon has been disputed ever since its existence was made known. Polyploidy is the condition in which the haploid number of the chromosomes, contained within the nucleus, is multiplied so that there is a higher number of chromosomes present than there is in the typical diploid cell of that particular plant or animal. The diploid number of the chromois known as 2n, therefore, higher multiples would be referred to as 3n, 4n, 8n etc. Some plants or animals have one …

The Effect Of The Ph On The Viscosity Of Various Gelatin Solutions, Theodore C. Kraus

Bachelors’ Theses

Tremendous research has been done in recent years In the field of the protein colloids. Our small, but nevertheless important knowledge of the protein colloids is due to such eminent investigators as Loeb, Kruyt, Freundlich, and Hardy, to name only a few. They have presented to the scientific world valuable experiments and reports of their work. However, much remains to be accomplished in spite of their achievements. The fact that the whole of the organic life processes concerns Itself with colloidal phenomena, particularly the reactions of large aggregates of protein particles, is indicative that the field is widespread in its …

The Influence Of Gelatin On The Ph Of Acids And Bases, Beverly Terwilliger May 1942

The Influence Of Gelatin On The Ph Of Acids And Bases, Beverly Terwilliger

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to determine how gelatin behaves in the presence of various acids and alkalis. It is possible to titrate gelatins with acids and bases and thereby determine the relation of the pH of the solution to the amounts of acid or base combined with the gelatin. If the results are plotted, a titration curve is obtained, the value of which gives the acid and base combining properties of a certain gelatin.

A Chromium Plating Bath Containing Sodium Benzenesulfonate Instead Of Sulfuric Acid, Edward Burleigh May 1942

A Chromium Plating Bath Containing Sodium Benzenesulfonate Instead Of Sulfuric Acid, Edward Burleigh

Bachelors’ Theses

At the present day chromium plated articles are saving the country many tons of badly needed metals. The beautiful, bright, luster that chromium has is no longer the prime quality that makes its use so extensive. Today its extreme hardness has taken the foremost place. Parts worn by use and re-claimed with chromium, not only wear longer than the original ones· but they also save valuable metal and time put into new ones. New articles plated with chromium have increased life, and thus the time and metal needed for replacement is greatly reduced.

The present chromium plating baths containing sulfuric acid …

The Cleaning Action Of Detergents And Soaps On Printer's Ink And Lubricating Oils, Daniel David Holzman May 1942

The Cleaning Action Of Detergents And Soaps On Printer's Ink And Lubricating Oils, Daniel David Holzman

Bachelors’ Theses

During the past few years, industry has developed a steadily increasing interest in certain new types of synthetic organic compounds.

Industry devoted to the cleaning of textiles has found the removal of printer's ink and lubricating oils a tedious operation.

There has been developed and perfected a series of synthetic materials which successfully meet modern needs.

The detergents, in general, have some or all of the following properties: wetting-out, dispersing, emulsifying, penetrating, and cleaning.

There seems to be a need to investigate some of these new detergents for commercial cleaning purposes.

A Study Of The Bright Nickel Producing Properties Of Tergitol Penetrant 4, Maurice F. Murphy Jul 1941

A Study Of The Bright Nickel Producing Properties Of Tergitol Penetrant 4, Maurice F. Murphy

Bachelors’ Theses

For many years, it has been known in the plating industry that certain metal baths were affected when materials called ’'addition agents” were added. The addition agents were usually organic and had high molecular weights. Nickel is especially sensitive to the presence of such foreign substances, a very bright deposit being obtained upon the addition of small amounts of gum, gelatin, glue, gum tragacanth, gum arabic and similar materials. These substances have, however, proved unsatisfactory because of difficulty of control and because of decomposition of the agent.

In the past ten years a new type of bright nickel bath has …

An Experimental Study Of The Destruction Distillation Of Corn Cobs, Wendall Lee Perry May 1941

An Experimental Study Of The Destruction Distillation Of Corn Cobs, Wendall Lee Perry

Bachelors’ Theses

The utilization of waste products is daily becoming more and more important. It has always been a big problem of industry to utilize its waste material; and as a result, limitless effort has been spent in the attempt to stress utility and economy in all forms of production. Under ordinary circumstances, the utilization of many waste products has been disregarded because of the large expense involved; but in critical times such as the present, expense becomes a secondary issue, and the actual production of necessary material becomes foremost. It is true that the waste connected with large industries is very …

The Effect Of Time, Temperature, And Pressure On The Hydrogenation Of A Mixture Of Linoleic And Oleic Acids, Gordon S. Wepfer May 1941

The Effect Of Time, Temperature, And Pressure On The Hydrogenation Of A Mixture Of Linoleic And Oleic Acids, Gordon S. Wepfer

Bachelors’ Theses

During the past few years interest and experimentation in the field of hydrogenation of different fats and oils has increased enormously. Strides made in the oil-hardening industry have surpassed all expectations. These advances were brought about by simplifying old methods and creating new ones. The probable reasons for this impetus in research is due to the fact that unexpected uses for hydrogenated oils and fats have been found and will continue to be found. With the increase in use of these products the market for them will also increase. Recently, the resin industries have produced useful products by condensing pure …

The Study Of The Physical And Chemical Factors Influencing The Plankton In The Menomonee River, Hermoise Katz May 1941

The Study Of The Physical And Chemical Factors Influencing The Plankton In The Menomonee River, Hermoise Katz

Bachelors’ Theses

The reasons for the choice of this study are several in number. Previous collecting trips had shown to some extent the relatively high productivity of organic life in this stream. From superficial external evidence, however, it seemed likely that the stream should contain some degree of pollution. The contradictory nature of these two observations called for furthur investigation. Then too, the nearness of the location of the Menomonee River to Marquette University contributed to the facility of such an investigation, and also pointed to the possibility that such a survey might be of some use to the Department of Biology. …

A Study Of Resins From Carbohydrates, Edward F. Sullivan May 1941

A Study Of Resins From Carbohydrates, Edward F. Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

The availability of large amounts of carbohydrates, and the need in the past years of larger markets for the available supplies of sugar have lead a number of sugar companies to investigate the possibilities of synthetic resins from carbohydrates. Although in the last ten or twelve years, a number of steps have been taken in the investigation of sugar resins, the information available has been restricted to a few patents. Consequently, information on the chemistry of the problem has been neglected. Thus, this work, for the most part, covers partially the possibilities of producing alkyd resins from saccharides, as well …

Solubilities Of Glycerides, Alois L. Wagner May 1941

Solubilities Of Glycerides, Alois L. Wagner

Bachelors’ Theses

The mono, di, and triglycerides have many uses in industry; each of these glycerides has a specific purpose, if not directly, then as an intermediary compound .in the synthesis of a glycerol derivative. In order to obtain the highest efficiency in a synthesis, or as a matter of fact, in any phase of chemistry, the production of a homogeneous result demands the use of pure uniform constituents.

The majority of this work has been carried on with the rat as the subject, and resulting external physical variations as the experimental aim. The writer used the mouse as his subject, but, since no literature was available concerning this animal, a few similar experiments performed on the rat will be cited.

The Preparation Of Some Typical Organoboron Compounds, Glen David Barbaras May 1941

The Preparation Of Some Typical Organoboron Compounds, Glen David Barbaras

Bachelors’ Theses

Organoboron compounds have long been known, the first being prepared by Frankland as early as 1862. No particular interest in these compounds was aroused, how ever, because of the difficulty and expense of their preparation as well as their extreme instability. From time to time further attempts at their preparation were made and a few reactions were ob served. With the rise of modern electronic theories of chemical combination, however, organoboron compounds were discovered to exhibit properties and undergo reactions which would substantiate these theories. Consequently, since 1936 possibly over a hundred of these compounds of many different types have …

A Study Of The Variation Of Concentration Of Sulfuric Acid As An Electrolyte Between Two Copper Electrodes, Scott S. Tomter Jul 1940

A Study Of The Variation Of Concentration Of Sulfuric Acid As An Electrolyte Between Two Copper Electrodes, Scott S. Tomter

Bachelors’ Theses

When Arrhenius presented his theory of electrolytic dissociation approximately fifty years ago, little did he realize that this theory would prove to be one of the corner stones in the epoch-making developments in chemistry since that time.

Electrochemistry, although still in early development, has risen so greatly in importance that it is now a necessary process in industrial chemistry. It can be estimated fairly that about one-seventh of all manufactured goods are prepared by electrochemical processes directly or indirectly; i.e., in the manufacture of the finished article or in the process of preparing the material.

Interest, herein, is centered on …

The Direct Chlorination Of Benzene And The Preparation Of Alpha And Beta Benzene Hexachlorides, Hubert B. Meloche Jul 1940

The Direct Chlorination Of Benzene And The Preparation Of Alpha And Beta Benzene Hexachlorides, Hubert B. Meloche

Bachelors’ Theses

This research was undertaken in order to study the breaking of the double bonds in a benzene ring by some means other than direct hydrogenation. A study of the literature reveals that the benzene ring has been broken up by chlorination giving hexachlorides of benzene as products of the reaction. But no information regarding the hexachlorides themselves or their method of preparation could be found in the current literature.

A Study Of The Effect Of Various Organic Polar Groupings On Inhibiting The Corrosion Of Steel By Sulfuric Acid, Frank H. Stockhausen Jun 1940

A Study Of The Effect Of Various Organic Polar Groupings On Inhibiting The Corrosion Of Steel By Sulfuric Acid, Frank H. Stockhausen

Bachelors’ Theses

Much has been written on the testing of organic compounds to inhibit the sulfuric acid corrosion in the pickling of steel. For the most part, however, this has been confined to work either on commercial inhibitors which are usually coal tar derivatives of unknown composition, or upon complex amines or sulfonates with little attention paid to comparing the types of polar linkages. The emphasis has been placed on the complexity of molecular structure rather than a thorough analysis of what structure really means in inhibiting action.
