Introduction

The purpose of this research endeavor was to determine the structures of the adducts of dichloroketene with diphenylfulvene and benzodiphenylfulvene. Structure elucidation was attempted by chemical degradation and nmr analysis.

The structures of the adducts of dichloroketene with cyclopentadiene^1,2 and indene^3,4 have been determined by previous workers. The influence of the exocyclic double bond on the mode of cycloaddition is unknown.

Introduction

Aminocarboxylic acid cobalt(III) complexes have been of interest to inorganic chemists since 1909 when Ley and Winkler isolated violet and rose colored geometric isomers of tris amino acid complexes of glycine and alanine.¹ More recently, considerable interest has been shown in the study of the stereochemistry and optical activity arising from configurational and vicinal interactions of these complexes. Nuclear magnetic resonance of the methylene protons on the carboxylate portion of the coordinated ligand has also been studied.

Of immediate interest to this study is the stereo-chemistry of complexes containing flexible tetradentate ligands. A tetradentate ligand may be constructed …

Introduction

Although the stereochemical capabilities of carbonium ions have been extensively investigated, the stereochemical fate of carbanions has been subjected relatively little to systematic scrutiny. The fact that only a limited number of clean-cut sources of carbanions are available has added difficulty to such investigations.

The stereochemical capabilities of carbanions has been extensively and thoroughly examined in recent years by Cram and coworkers. However, the carbanion carbon developed in the reactions employed was bonded in every case to an unsaturated (usually aromatic) group. No fully aliphatic carbanion has been subjected to such a stereochemical study.

Paper contains an uneven distribution of fiber fractions through its cross section. The objective of this study was to determine how the rate of formation affected the structure and properties of paper. The structure of paper was analyzed with reference to the cross-sectional distribution of fines and the fines to long fibers ratio in the paper.

The formation rate and distribution of fins were varied by applying a vacuum to the British sheetmold system. As the fines were a different color than the long fibers, their distribution was determined by analyzing the brightness values of layers split from the paper. …

Introduction

In our earlier work we demonstrated the usefulness of the acidcatalyzed reaction between N-(p -tolyl)diphenylketenimine (21) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for the oxidation of secondary alcohols. This was exemplified by the oxidation of 2',3'-O-isopropylideneadenosine and other secondary alcohols.¹ We have now extended this procedure to the oxidation of hydroxy-steroids.

Alkynylamines or ynamines can be written in two resonance forms: R-C≡C-N R'₂ and R-C=C=NR'₂. Because of the close similarity between the latter structure and the structure of a ketenimine (R₂C=C=N-R') and the ability of sulfoxide-ketenimine to effect the oxidation of secondary alcohols, we …

The purpose of this research was to study the homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated organic compounds containing a wide variety of reducible functional groups. The catalysts to be used were rhodium complexes of triarylphosphines. It was also desired to develop these catalytic systems into practical synthetic methods for the reduction of unsaturated compounds.

Statement of Problem

The study of conditions required for the electrodeposition of a nickel-tin alloy from baths other than the fluoride bath and the acetate bath was undertaken. The research included the correlation of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of electrode processes fro the electrodeposition of the alloy desired.

The research also included the determination of the formula and formation constant of the nickel tartrate complex. The tartrate ion was a possible constituent in a bath for the electrodeposition of the alloy.
