A reversible density driven insulator to metal to insulator transition in high-spin MnS2 is experimentally observed, leading with a colossal electrical resistance drop of 108 ω by 12 GPa. Density functional theory simulations reveal the metallization to be unexpectedly driven by previously unoccupied S22- σ3p∗ antibonding states crossing the Fermi level. This is a unique variant of the charge transfer insulator to metal transition for negative charge transfer insulators having anions with an unsaturated valence. By 36 GPa the emergence of the low-spin insulating arsenopyrite (P21/c) is confirmed, and the bulk metallicity is broken with the system returning to an …

Pressure- And Temperature-Dependent Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study Of The Phase Transition And Phonon Lattice Dynamics In Para-Terphenyl, Qingan Cai, Michael Mcintire, Luke L. Daemen, Chen Li, Eric Chronister
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
Inelastic neutron scattering has been performed on para-terphenyl at temperatures from 10 to 200 K and under pressures from the ambient pressure to 1.51 kbar. The temperature dependence of phonons, especially low-frequency librational bands, indicates strong anharmonic phonon dynamics. The pressure- and temperature-dependence of the phonon modes suggest a lack of phase transition in the region of 0-1.51 kbar and 10-30 K. Additionally, the overall lattice dynamics remains similar up to 200 K under the ambient pressure. The results suggest that the boundary between the ordered triclinic phase and the third solid phase, reported at lower temperatures and higher pressures, …

Sulfur/selenium grading is a widely used optimization strategy in kesterite thin-film solar cells to obtain a bandgap-graded absorber material and to optimize optical and electrical properties of the solar-cell device. In this work, we present a novel approach to introduce a [S]/([S] + [Se]) grading for Cu ZnSn(S,Se) solar cells. In contrast to commonly used methods with slow process dynamics, the presented approach aims to create a fast sulfurization reaction on the surface of pure selenide kesterite absorbers by using highly reactive H S gas and high sulfurization temperatures in a rapid flash-type process. With a combination of X-ray photoelectron …

A series of poly(pyridinium salt)s-fluorene main-chain ionic polymers with various organic counterions were synthesized by using ring-transmutation polymerization and metathesis reactions. Their chemical structures were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), proton (1H), and fluorine 19 (19F) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers. These polymers showed a number-average molecular weight (Mns) between 96.5 and 107.8 kg/mol and polydispersity index (PDI) in the range of 1.12-1.88. They exhibited fully-grown lyotropic phases in polar protic and aprotic solvents at different critical concentrations. Small-angle X-ray scattering for one polymer example indicates lyotropic structure formation for 60-80% solvent fraction. A lyotropic smectic phase contains 10 …

Considering the remarkable characteristics of nanomaterials, previous research studies investigated the effects of incorporating different types of these materials on improving the concrete properties. However, further studies are required to evaluate the complementary hybridization and synergistic influence of nanomaterials. In this research, the combined effect of adding nano silica particles (NS) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on enhancing both the compressive and flexural strengths of the cement paste was investigated. Moreover, the morphology of the interface between cement paste and aggregates was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mixtures were prepared using three different portions of MWCNT and NS. …

Non-Adiabatic Quantum Interference In The Ultracold Li + Lina → Li2+ Na Reaction, Brian K. Kendrick, Hui Li, Ming Li, Svetlana Kotochigova, James F.E. Croft, Naduvalath Balakrishnan
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
Electronically non-adiabatic effects play an important role in many chemical reactions. However, how these effects manifest in cold and ultracold chemistry remains largely unexplored. Here for the first time we present from first principles the non-adiabatic quantum dynamics of the reactive scattering between ultracold alkali-metal LiNa molecules and Li atoms. We show that non-adiabatic dynamics induces quantum interference effects that dramatically alter the ultracold rotationally resolved reaction rate coefficients. The interference effect arises from the conical intersection between the ground and an excited electronic state that is energetically accessible even for ultracold collisions. These unique interference effects might be exploited …

Actinide materials exhibit strong spin-lattice coupling and electronic correlations, and are predicted to host new emerging ground states. One example is piezomagnetism and magneto-elastic memory effect in the antiferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard insulator uranium dioxide, though its microscopic nature is under debate. Here, we report X-ray diffraction studies of oriented uranium dioxide crystals under strong pulsed magnetic fields. In the antiferromagnetic state a [888] Bragg diffraction peak follows the bulk magnetostriction that expands under magnetic fields. Upon reversal of the field the expansion turns to contraction, before the [888] peak follows the switching effect and piezomagnetic 'butterfly' behaviour, characteristic of two structures …

NinjaFlex® is a thermoplastic polyurethane filament that is primarily used for 3D printing. Aside from its low cost and availability, this material is highly flexible, durable, and has a low coefficient of friction. While NinjaFlex® was introduced approximately two decades ago, a comprehensive understanding of the filament’s mechanical behavior, especially in the context of the effect of 3D printing, is still lacking. The goal of this research is to gain a better understanding of the behavior of 3D printed NinjaFlex® specimens when subjected to bending loads that cause large deflection. A series of experiments were conducted to test the bending …

Effect Of Heat Treatment On Microstructure And Hardness Of A Worn Rail Repaired Using Laser Powder Deposition, Ershad Mortazavian, Zhiyong Wang, Hualiang Teng
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research
The frequent replacement of worn rails on tracks brings an immense economic burden on the railroad industry, and also causes significant interruptions to railroad operation. Restoration of worn rails via laser powder deposition (LPD) can considerably reduce the associated maintenance costs. This study was focused on the use of LPD to repair the worn profile of a standard U.S. rail. The microstructure of the 304L stainless steel deposits with a minimum hardness of 85 HRB was composed of austenite, δ-ferrite, and sigma. Micropores were dispersed throughout the deposit, and microcracks were found at the rail-deposition interface. The pearlitic rail substrate …

Developments Of Machine Learning Potentials For Atomistic Simulations, Howard Yanxon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Atomistic modeling methods such as molecular dynamics play important roles in investigating time-dependent physical and chemical processes at the microscopic level. In the simulations, energy and forces, sometimes including stress tensor, need to be recalculated iteratively as the atomic configuration evolves. Consequently, atomistic simulations crucially depend on the accuracy of the underlying potential energy surface. Modern quantum mechanical modeling based on density functional theory can consistently generate an accurate description of the potential energy surface. In most cases, molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory suffer from highly demanding computational costs. On the other hand, atomistic simulations based on …

© 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. Differential pulse polarography (DPP) was used to assess the interaction of Pb2+ with various humic acid analogs and several humic acids. DPP analysis demonstrated that the reduction peak maximum (Ep) for Pb2+ shifted to more negative values in the presence of humic acids and humic acid analogs. The observed Ep for Pb2+ in the presence of humic acids and humic acid analogs is influenced by ligand concentration, solution pH and Pb2+ concentration. Shifts in the Ep for Pb2+ are related to the reduction potential and can be rationalized using the Lingane …

An Actinide Lanthanide Separation Process (ALSEP) for the separation of trivalent actinides (An(III)) from simulated raffinate solution was successfully demonstrated using a 32-stage 1 cm annular centrifugal contactor setup. The ALSEP solvent was composed of a mixture of 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (HEH[EHP]) and N,N,N′,N′-tetra-(2-ethylhexyl)-diglycolamide (T2EHDGA) in n-dodecane. Flowsheet calculations and evaluation of the results were done using the Argonne’s Model for Universal Solvent Extraction (AMUSE) code using single-stage distribution data. The co-extraction of Zr(IV) and Pd(II) was prevented using CDTA (trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid) as a masking agent in the feed. For the scrubbing of co-extracted Mo; citrate-buffered acetohydroxamic acid was …

Recently, there have been calls to integrate systems thinking approaches into chemistry education in order to strengthen students’ conceptual understanding, build their problem-solving capabilities, and prepare them to make informed, ethical decisions about globally relevant issues, such as sustainability. Unfortunately, implementation of systems thinking approaches in chemistry classrooms currently poses challenges. Exemplar systems thinking materials with a STEM focus are limited, particularly at the tertiary level. Moreover, the science education community has yet to agree upon a systems thinking definition or develop a comprehensive list of systems thinking skills that students should develop. Thus, a current priority for the advancement …

In recent years, various thin film solar devices have reached markedly high efficiencies on both the laboratory and large area scale. To further evaluate their potential, and help drive device optimization of efficient solar devices, a detailed understanding of the chemical and electronic structure of the surfaces and interfaces is required. It is these interfaces that play a pivotal role in dictating aspects of device performance. Chalcopyrite-based materials, such as Cu(In,Ga)S2 (CIGS) are regarded as one of the most promising absorber materials for use in highly efficient solar devices. In the context of photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation, the tunability of …

Technetium (Tc) is the lightest of the radioactive elements and has no stable isotopes. Significant quantities of Tc are not naturally occurring on earth. However, technetium is found in high fission yield in nuclear reactors and produced for medical imaging. With its long half life, and high mobility in the environment make it of particular interest. To that end, the fundamental chemistry of Tc and Tc compounds is not as well understood compared to neighboring elements on the periodic table. Therefore, fundamental studies designed to better understand this transition metal, coupled with more targeted investigation at high temperature and pressure …

Be2+ ion is a biologically active metal that is capable of binding to proteins and has been shown to affect various cellular processes. When treated with Be2+, certain cancer cells display cytostatic effects. GSK3β is a regulatory kinase involved in the β-catenin pathway that may be involved in producing these cytostatic effects when Be2+ binds to it. In order to determine binding parameters between Be2+ and GSK3β, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) can be utilized. However, titrations at physiological pH cannot be carried out due to Be2+ unique speciation at neutral pH ranges. Significant precipitation occurs at pH 6 and higher …

Zirconium Tetrachloride, Fundamental Chemistry And Nuclear Fuel Cycle, Rosendo Borjas Nevarez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Zirconium alloys are used in the United States as cladding materials in nuclear reactors. The purification of Zr is of relevance due to the large amount of spent nuclear fuel produced every year (2,000 metric tons per year and rising), of which 25% corresponds to radioactive zirconium cladding. Through the recovery and reuse of Zr, estimated savings of $40 million per year are estimated due to the high cost of hafnium-free nuclear grade zirconium, and also due to the minimization of nuclear waste disposal requirements.
Several chemical approaches have been proposed for the recovery and purification of Zr. Historically, a …

The Retrospective Analysis Of Radionuclides In Banded Coral From The Bikini Atoll, Athena Marie Gallardo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Nuclear weapons testing conducted within the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands resulted in local fallout contamination, including long lived isotopes of plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U), within the surrounding environment. The Bikini lagoon provides a continuous source of Pu (239+240Pu) and U (236U) to the Pacific Basin. The rate at which these isotopes are flushed from the lagoon to the ocean is balanced by inputs from remobilization of lagoon sediments. This research will provide a basis for predicting future change in the solubility and export potential of Pu and U in lagoon sediments. This is important to better understand …

A group of five 2,4,6-tris(4-substituted phenyl)pyrylium tosylates were synthesized in one-pot reaction from para-substituted benzaldehyde and para-substituted acetophenones using tosic acid as a condensing agent. The tosylate salts were converted to the corresponding triflimide salts by metathesis reactions. Chemical structures, as well as optical spectroscopic and thermal properties of these salts were studied using pertinent experimental techniques. Trimethyl- and trihalo-substituted pyrylium salts emitted strong blue light with peaks in the 456 nm–479 nm range and trimethoxy-pyrylium salts emitted intense green light with maxima around 526 nm in acetonitrile solution. Quantum yields of the solutions were rather low, but the salts …

Reports of quadrivalent transition-metal fluoride salts containing bulky organic cations are limited. In this context, we prepared the bis(tetraphenylarsonium) hexafluoridotechnetate(IV) dihydrate salt, (C24H20As)2[TcF6]·2H2O, by a cation metathesis reaction of (NH4)2[TcF6] in water. This is the first report of an arsonium salt of the hexafluoridotechnetate(IV) dianion. (AsPh4)2[TcF6]·2H2O crystallizes in the triclinic space group P[\overline{1}]. The [TcF6]2− anion adopts a slightly distorted octahedral geometry with an average Tc—F bond length of 1.933 Å. The cyclic voltammogram of (AsPh4)2[TcF6]·2H2O in CH3CN shows a one-electron reversible oxidation wave at 1.496 V.

Smoke from laboratory chamber burning of peat fuels from Russia, Siberia, the USA (Alaska and Florida), and Malaysia representing boreal, temperate, subtropical, and tropical regions was sampled before and after passing through a potential-aerosol-mass oxidation flow reactor (PAM-OFR) to simulate intermediately aged (∼2 d) and well-aged (∼7 d) source profiles. Species abundances in PM2.5 between aged and fresh profiles varied by several orders of magnitude with two distinguishable clusters, centered around 0.1 % for reactive and ionic species and centered around 10 % for carbon. Organic carbon (OC) accounted for 58 %–85 % of PM2.5 mass in fresh profiles with …
