Automatized approaches for nanoparticle synthesis and characterization represent a great asset to their applicability in the biomedical field by improving reproducibility and standardization, which help to meet the selection criteria of regulatory authorities. The scaled-up production of nanoparticles with carefully defined characteristics, including intrinsic morphological features, and minimal intra-batch, batch-to-batch, and operator variability, is an urgent requirement to elevate nanotechnology towards more trustable biological and technological applications. In this work, microfluidic approaches were employed to achieve fast mixing and good reproducibility in synthesizing a variety of gold nanostructures. The microfluidic setup allowed exploiting spatial resolution to investigate the growth evolution …

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based On Pyridyl-Tetrazole Ligands Containing Ester Or Carboxylate Pendant Arms, Ursula Sheridan, John Gallagher, Morten Bjerrum, Adrienne Fleming, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley May 2014

Metal-Organic Frameworks Based On Pyridyl-Tetrazole Ligands Containing Ester Or Carboxylate Pendant Arms, Ursula Sheridan, John Gallagher, Morten Bjerrum, Adrienne Fleming, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley

The coordination of pyridyl-tetrazole derivatives containing ester substituents, at either the N-1 or N-2 position of the tetrazole ring, with copper(II) chloride results in the formation of either 1:1 or 1:2 copper to ligand complexes, depending on the ligand. However, when the ester functionality is changed to a carboxylate group, the resulting complexation reactions yield metal-organic frameworks. The resulting structures vary dramatically in pore size, depending on both reaction solvents and position of carboxylate group on the tetrazole ring. Despite the presence of sodium cations in the reaction mixtures, no sodium incorporation was ever observed in any of the complexes. …

Using Structure-Based Organic Chemistry Online Tutorials With 2 Automated Correction For Student Practice And Review, Timothy O'Sullivan, Gráinne Hargaden Jan 2014

Using Structure-Based Organic Chemistry Online Tutorials With 2 Automated Correction For Student Practice And Review, Timothy O'Sullivan, Gráinne Hargaden

Articles

This article describes the development and implementation of an open-access organic chemistry question bank for online tutorials and assessments at University College Cork and Technological University Dublin. SOCOT (structure-based organic chemistry online tutorials) may be used to supplement traditional small-group tutorials, thereby allowing students to develop essential problem-solving skills in organic chemistry. This online approach may be used for both formative and summative assessment. Students complete one problem set weekly or fortnightly, which consists of a number of questions of varying difficulty. A wide range of question types is possible; for example, prediction of reaction products, identification of reaction intermediates …

The Bench Synthesis Of Silver Nanostructures Of Variable Size And An Introductory Analysis Of Their Optical Properties, Aoife Power, Tony Betts, John Cassidy Jan 2013

The Bench Synthesis Of Silver Nanostructures Of Variable Size And An Introductory Analysis Of Their Optical Properties, Aoife Power, Tony Betts, John Cassidy

Articles

A laboratory practical was designed for use by both undergraduate and second level students to demonstrate the synthesis and characterisation of tuneable silver colloids. It clearly illustrates the novel optical properties of silver nanoparticles compared to the bulk metal. The synthesis is both rapid and repeatable, and can be conducted on the laboratory bench at room temperature.

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Macrocycles Containing Both Tetrazole And Pyridine Functionalities, Adrienne Fleming, Jackie Gaire, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley, Vickie Mckee Jan 2011

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Macrocycles Containing Both Tetrazole And Pyridine Functionalities, Adrienne Fleming, Jackie Gaire, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley, Vickie Mckee

Articles

The syntheses of tetra-tetrazole macrocycles containing at least one 2,6-bis(tetrazole)pyridine unit, linked by a variety of n-alkyl (n = 3, 5, 7 or 9 carbon atoms) chain lengths, are described. There has been no previous incorporation of the pyridine moiety into a tetra-tetrazolophane macrocycle. The crystal structure of one such tetra-tetrazole macrocycle has also been structurally characterised and revealed a bowl-shaped conformation.

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Tetra-Tetrazole Macrocycles, Andrew Bond, Adrienne Fleming, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley, Vipa Prajapati, Signe Skovsgaard Jan 2007

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Tetra-Tetrazole Macrocycles, Andrew Bond, Adrienne Fleming, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley, Vipa Prajapati, Signe Skovsgaard

Articles

The syntheses of tetra-tetrazole macrocycles, containing two bis-tetrazole units linked by a variety of alkyl chain lengths from four to eight carbons, are described. The crystal structures of three of these derivatives are reported, and the molecular conformation in the solid state is compared to that of one previously reported tetra-tetrazole macrocycle and to other bis- and tris(tetrazole)benzene structures. The macrocycle conformation is influenced by the length of the alkyl chain linker, the relative orientation of the tetrazole rings on the benzene ring, and by intermolecular interactions. In the macrocycles based on 1,2-bis(tetrazole)benzene, the adjacent tetrazole rings on the benzene …

The Synthesis Of Zinc Oxide By Direct And Indirect Methods, Grainne Duffy Jul 2006

The Synthesis Of Zinc Oxide By Direct And Indirect Methods, Grainne Duffy

Masters

The synthesis of zinc oxide through three routes was investigated; carboxylic acid chelation, polymer assisted synthesis in an alcoholic medium and slow thermolysis of precursor. In the case of carboxylic acid chelation, it was determined that the rate at which the precursor is formed has a significant effect on the quality of zinc oxide particles produced. Investigation of the effect of concentration, pH and species of chelating agent used on the purity and structure of product was undertaken. Examination of the composition and morphology of materials produced revealed the presence of single-crystalline spheres, the packing density and aggregation morphology of …
