Kinetic Study Of The Oxygen Reduction Reaction On Α-Ni(Oh)2 And Α-Ni(Oh)2 Supported On Graphene Oxide, Elaheh Farjami, L. Jay Deiner

Publications and Research

The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction on α-Ni(OH)2 and α-Ni(OH)2 supported on graphene oxide (α-Ni(OH)2/GO) were investigated using rotating disk linear sweep voltammetry in alkaline solutions of varying oxygen and hydroxyl concentrations. Over the full hydroxyl concentration range (0.05 M to 0.5M), α-Ni(OH)2/GO displayed higher activity than unsupported α-Ni(OH)2. The electron transfer numbers were 2.9 ± 0.2 for α-Ni(OH)2, 3.4 ± 0.1 for α-Ni(OH)2/GO at low [OH−], and 3.8–3.9 for α-Ni(OH)2/GO at high [OH−]. Compared to α-Ni(OH)2, α-Ni(OH)2/GO displayed higher chemical reaction rate constants and higher electron transfer rate constants. These differences suggest that the synergy between the α-Ni(OH)2 …

Publications and Research

Methyl-substituted melting gels were used to coat AISI 304 stainless steel substrates. Crack-free coatings up to 1 mm in thickness were obtained. SEM micrographs of cross-sections con fi rm good adhesion to the surface. Samples were subjected to structural characterization using FT-IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Mechanical properties were investigated by micro-scratch tests. Electrochemical analyses (anodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) were performed in 3.5% NaCl solutions. Electrochemical tests show excellent performance of the coatings against corrosion with no sign of degradation after several months of immersion.

Surface Plasmon And The Effect Of Coupled Resonances In The Enhancement Of Phonon And Molecular Modes In Semiconductors, Syed Islam May 2015

Surface Plasmon And The Effect Of Coupled Resonances In The Enhancement Of Phonon And Molecular Modes In Semiconductors, Syed Islam

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The presence of surface plasmon resonance in semiconductors is not a typical point of discussion in the research community. While the presence of surface plasmon resonance in metals is widely accepted due to the presence of free electrons in conduction bands, the existence of surface plasmon in semiconductors has been generally ruled out due to the absence of free electrons in conduction bands. In this dissertation, we show that semiconductors are able to support surface plasmon in valence band. We also demonstrate, by using the Mie theory, that semiconductor nanoparticles can be designed so that the surface plasmon can be …

Dynamics And Kinetics Of Singlet Oxygen Mediated Oxidation Of Methionine In The Gas Phase, Hydrated Clusters And Solution, Fangwei Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The reaction between methionine (Met) and electronically excited singlet molecular oxygen (O2[a1Δg]) has been investigated in a systematic fashion, using a home-built electrospray ionization (ESI) guided-ion-beam tandem mass spectrometer (MS). The study started from probing the reaction dynamics between the isolated protonated/deprotonated methionine ions with 1O2 in the gas phase, transited through the same systems micro-solvated with explicit water molecules in gaseous hydrated clusters, and concluded with real-time methionine oxidation kinetics determination in aqueous solution. The reaction products, cross sections, and collision energy dependence were measured by ESI-MS. Density functional theory (DFT) …

Structural Patterns At All Scales In A Nonmetallic Chiral Au_133(Sr)_52 Nanoparticle, Chenjie Zeng, Yuxiang Chen, Kristin Kirschbaum, Kannatassen Appavoo, Matthew Y. Sfeir, Rongchao Jin

Publications and Research

Structural ordering is widely present in molecules and materials. However, the organization of molecules on the curved surface of nanoparticles is still the least understood owing to the major limitations of the current surface characterization tools. By the merits of x-ray crystallography, we reveal the structural ordering at all scales in a super robust 133–gold atom nanoparticle protected by 52 thiolate ligands, which is manifested in self-assembled hierarchical patterns starting from the metal core to the interfacial –S–Au–S– ladder-like helical “stripes” and further to the “swirls” of carbon tails. These complex surface patterns have not been observed in the smaller …

Wigner High-Electron-Correlation Regime Of Non-Uniform Density Systems: A Quantal-Density-Functional-Theory Study, Douglas Mortimer Achan Feb 2015

Wigner High-Electron-Correlation Regime Of Non-Uniform Density Systems: A Quantal-Density-Functional-Theory Study, Douglas Mortimer Achan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Wigner regime of a system of electrons in an external field is characterized by a low electron density and a high electron-interaction energy relative to the kinetic energy. The low correlation regime is in turn described by a high electron density and an electron-interaction energy smaller than the kinetic energy. The Wigner regime of a nonuniform electron density system is investigated via quantal density functional theory (QDFT). Within QDFT, the contributions of electron correlations due to the Pauli exclusion principle, Coulomb repulsion, and correlation-kinetic effects are separately delineated and explicitly defined. The nonuniform electron density system studied is that …

Highly-Selective Chemiresistive Sensing And Analysis Of Vapors Using Functionalized Nanotubes, Deon Hines Feb 2015

Highly-Selective Chemiresistive Sensing And Analysis Of Vapors Using Functionalized Nanotubes, Deon Hines

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Specifically, the project involves the development of a diversified array of nanostructured gas-sensors comprised of selectively, novel surface-functionalized carbon nanotubes (for analyte selectivity by virtue of functionality). Harnessing carbon nanotubes with various electron withdrawing and donating groups help in determining their affinity toward certain prognostic gaseous markers thus increasing specificity of such created sensors. We have devised synthetic routes that have led to the facile production of covalently polyfunctionalized nanotubes in high yield. Seven carbon nanotube analogues were systematically considered and then chemically synthesized, from pristine single-walled nanotubes (SWNT's), for use as the main component of sensory units that was …

Cationic Amphiphilic Synthetic Macromolecules With Superior Antibacterial Activity, Ashish Punia Feb 2015

Cationic Amphiphilic Synthetic Macromolecules With Superior Antibacterial Activity, Ashish Punia

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria (superbugs) has created a pressing need for new systems of antimicrobial agents. In this dissertation, I report on my extensive research on the design, synthesis, and development of synthetic amphiphilic macromolecules with antimicrobial activity and very low hemolytic impact. Synthetic amphiphilic polymers attack bacteria directly to rupture the cell membrane through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. However, the toxicity of such synthetic amphiphilic polymers against mammalian cells have impeded their therapeutic applications. We investigated the systematic structure/activities relationships for antibacterial and hemolytic activities of amphiphilic polyacrylates and poly(vinyl esters). Acrylate homopolymers with various lengths …

Biomolecule Mediating Synthesis Of Inorganic Nanoparticles And Their Applications, Zengyan Wei

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Project 1.

The conventional phage display technique focuses on screening peptide sequences that can bind on target substrates, however the selected peptides are not necessary to nucleate and mediate the growth of the target inorganic crystals, and in many cases they only show moderate affinity to the targets. Here we report a novel phage display approach that can directly screen peptides catalytically growing inorganic nanoparticles in aqueous solution at room temperature. In this study, the phage library is incubated with zinc precursor at room temperature. Among random peptide sequences displayed on phages, those phages that can grow zinc oxide (ZnO) …

This is part of a greater ongoing study aimed at a range of suitable alkaloid targets.

Chapter 1 provides introduction to frog toxins as secondary metabolites and subsequently shifts to the target alkaloid. (+/-)-Gephyrotoxin 287C was originally described by Daly and …

Synthesis Of Dinucleoside Acylphosphonites By Phosphonodiamidite Chemistry And Investigation Of Phosphorus Epimerization, William H. Hersh Jan 2015

Synthesis Of Dinucleoside Acylphosphonites By Phosphonodiamidite Chemistry And Investigation Of Phosphorus Epimerization, William H. Hersh

Publications and Research

The reaction of the diamidite, (iPr2N)2PH, with acyl chlorides proceeds with the loss of HCl to give the corresponding acyl diamidites, RC(O)P(N(iPr)2)2 (R = Me (7), Ph (9)), without the intervention of sodium to give a phosphorus anion. The structure of 9 was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The coupling of the diamidites 7 and 9 with 5′-O-DMTr-thymidine was carried out with N-methylimidazolium triflate as the activator to give the monoamidites 3′-O-(P(N(iPr)2)C(O)R)-5′-O-DMTr-thymidine, and further coupling with 3′-O-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)thymidine was carried out with activation by pyridinium trifluoroacetate/Nmethylimidazole. The new dinucleoside acylphosphonites could be further oxidized, hydrolyzed to the H-phosphonates, and sulfurized to …

Comparing Three Methods For Estimating Ozone Depleting Substance Substitute Greenhouse Gases: Case Study Of The New York City Region, Wallace A. Murray Iii Jan 2015

Comparing Three Methods For Estimating Ozone Depleting Substance Substitute Greenhouse Gases: Case Study Of The New York City Region, Wallace A. Murray Iii

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis evaluates the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) method for estimating emissions from one source, Ozone Depleting Substances Substitutes (ODS substitutes) by comparing results for the New York City Metropolitan Statistical Area (NYC-MSA) with results from two other methodologies. The EPA’s method utilizes population data and GDP data to estimate and geographically allocate emissions, with little regard for the geographies of industrial activity. The two alternative methods use data for industrial employment and activity to provide results for comparison and perhaps a more accurate accounting and allocation of emissions throughout the NYC-MSA.

Configurationally Stable, Enantioenriched Organometallic Nucleophiles In Stereospecific Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions: An Alternative Approach To Asymmetric Synthesis, Chao-Yuan Wang, Joseph Derosa, Mark R. Biscoe Jan 2015

Configurationally Stable, Enantioenriched Organometallic Nucleophiles In Stereospecific Pd-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions: An Alternative Approach To Asymmetric Synthesis, Chao-Yuan Wang, Joseph Derosa, Mark R. Biscoe

Publications and Research

Several research groups have recently developed methods to employ configurationally stable, enantioenriched organometallic nucleophiles in stereospecific Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. By establishing the absolute configuration of a chiral alkyltin or alkylboron nucleophile prior to its use in cross-coupling reactions, new stereogenic centers may be rapidly and reliably generated with preservation of the known initial stereochemistry. While this area of research is still in its infancy, such stereospecific cross-coupling reactions may emerge as simple, general methods to access diverse, optically active products from common enantioenriched organometallic building blocks. This minireview highlights recent progress towards the development of general, stereospecific Pd-catalyzed crosscoupling reactions …

Stereoselective Radical C–H Alkylation With Acceptor/Acceptor-Substituted Diazo Reagents Via Co(Ii)-Based Metalloradical Catalysis, Xin Cui, Xue Xu, Li-Men Jin, Lukasz Wojtas, X. Peter Zhang Jan 2015

Stereoselective Radical C–H Alkylation With Acceptor/Acceptor-Substituted Diazo Reagents Via Co(Ii)-Based Metalloradical Catalysis, Xin Cui, Xue Xu, Li-Men Jin, Lukasz Wojtas, X. Peter Zhang

Publications and Research

Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysis has, for the first time, been successfully applied for asymmetric intramolecular C–H alkylation of acceptor/acceptor-substituted diazo reagents. Through the design and synthesis of a new D2-symmetric chiral amidoporphyrin as the supporting ligand, the Co(II)-based metalloradical system, which operates at room temperature, is capable of 1,5-C–H alkylation of α-methoxycarbonyl-α-diazosulfones with a broad range of electronic properties, providing the 5-membered sulfolane derivatives in high yields with excellent diastereoselectivities and enantioselectivities. In addition to complete chemoselectivity toward allylic and allenic C–H bonds, the Co(II)-based metalloradical catalysis for asymmetric C–H alkylation features a remarkable degree of functional group tolerance.

Degradation Of Carbon Tetrachloride Using Hydrophobic Green Rust, Sheena Bowman

Dissertations and Theses

Hydrophobic green rusts (GR) were produced using aerial oxidation of solutions containing bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (BIS) and sodium N-lauroylsarcosinate (SNLS), iron (II) sulfate and sodium hydroxide. The synthesis was conduced at constant pH 8.0±0.1 for the duration of 1-3 hrs. Partition tests showed GRBIS and GRSNLS suspended in the organic phase (tetrachloroethylene). Through X-ray diffraction analysis both GRs exhibit similar patterns to Green Rust II, an inorganic form of GR. The kinetics of GR reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT) was investigated. CT at high concentrations was degraded at high percentages for GRBIS-3, 88.5% and GRSNLS-5, 97.6%. Their reactions were …

The Effect Of Milling Additives On Powder Properties And Sintered Body Microstructure Of Nio, L. Jay Deiner, Michael A. Rottmayer, Bryan C. Eigenbrodt Jan 2015

The Effect Of Milling Additives On Powder Properties And Sintered Body Microstructure Of Nio, L. Jay Deiner, Michael A. Rottmayer, Bryan C. Eigenbrodt

Publications and Research

The evolution of powder particle size, crystal structure, and surface chemistry was evaluated for micron scale NiO powders subjected to impact milling with commonly employed milling additives: methanol, Vertrel XF, and amorphous carbon. The effect of the different comminution protocols on sintered body microstructure was evaluated for high temperature sintering in inert atmosphere (N2). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that NiO powder surface chemistry is surprisingly sensitive to milling additive choice. In particular, the proportion of powder surface defect sites varied with additive, and methanol left an alcohol or alkoxy residue even after drying. Upon sintering to intermediate temperatures (1100 ℃), …

Carbon And Nitrogen Dynamics From Slow Pools Of Soil Organic Matter In A Temperate Forest: Pyrogenic Organic Matter And And Root Litter, Fernanda Dos Santos

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Soil organic matter (SOM) is the dominant reservoir of organic carbon (OC) in terrestrial ecosystems, storing approximately three times the size of the C pool in the atmosphere. In temperate forests, a major fraction of the SOM consists of slowly decaying soil organic C (SOC) pools. While slowly cycling C pools constitute a large reservoir of stable C in soils, the dominant environmental factors controlling this C pool remain unresolved. This research investigates two significant, but poorly characterized slowly decaying C pools: fine root litter (< 2mm) and thermally altered plant biomass (pyrogenic organic matter, PyOM). Specifically, I used compound-specific stable isotope analysis (13C and 15N) as my main methodological approach to examine the (1) …

Synthesis Of Biologically Important C-Glycosides From Simple C-Glycosyl Alkenes, Ahmad Sabri Altiti Oct 2014

Synthesis Of Biologically Important C-Glycosides From Simple C-Glycosyl Alkenes, Ahmad Sabri Altiti

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

C-Glycosides are carbohydrate analogues in which the glycosidic oxygen is replaced with a methylene substituent. Because of their stability under acidic hydrolysis or enzymatic cleavage, they are widely used as mimetics of their parent O-glycosides in medicinal chemistry. This thesis describes the development of new synthetic methods for C-glycosides, which center on the use of readily available, simple C-allyl glycosides as precursors. C- glycosides of three structurally distinct and pharmacologically interesting carbohydrates, the immunostimulatory glycolipid C-KRN700, the insulin mimetic glycoinositol β-galactosamine-(1→4)-3-O-methyl-D-chiro-inositiol (INS-2), and α-mannose-(1→6)-D-myo-inositiol, a subunit of the cell wall in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, will be used as test cases for …

Development Of Cell-Active Inhibitors And Activity-Based Probe Of Cysteine Cathepsins, Dibyendu Dana

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Cysteine cathepsins are an important class of enzymes that coordinate a variety of important cellular processes, and are implicated in various types of human diseases. Still however, many of their cellular function remain poorly understood. Chemical biology approaches employing small molecules can be utilized for this purpose. Unfortunately small molecule probes that are cell-permeable and non-peptidyl in nature are scarcely available.

In this work, first a library of sulfonyloxiranes is synthesized. From this library, 2-(2-ethylphenylsulfonyl)oxirane is identified as a selective inhibitor of cysteine cathepsins. Cell-based study reveals that 2-(2-ethylphenylsulfonyl)oxirane is a cell-permeable, covalent, and irreversible inhibitor of cathepsin B with …

Development And Applications Of Mass Spectrometric Methods For Phosphorylation Analysis, Hsin-Pin Ho

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Protein phosphorylation modification regulates numerous cellular functions by a reversible and selective control of kinases and phosphatases. To understand the entire dynamic network of phosphorylation requires sensitive and reliable quantification of phosphorylation, measurements that can be achieved by mass spectrometry. In this research, we established efficient MALDI-mass spectrometric methods as strategies for single- or multi-site phosphorylation quantification without the use of isotopes, chromatography and calibration curves. The methods were assessed by analyzing peptide standards with different single-multiple phosphorylation sites, showing a wide dynamic range, good accuracy and reproducibility. This is the first label-free MALDI method without using a calibration methodology …

Oxocarbenium Ion And Alkene Metathesis Strategies For The Synthesis Of Complex Cyclohexanes, Clayton Errol Mattis

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Highly oxygenated cyclohexanes comprise the structures of a number of pharmacologically interesting molecules, including potently bioactive natural products and carbapyranosides. The latter, which are unnatural analogues of carbohydrates in which the ring oxygen of the parent sugar is replaced with a methylene group, have attracted interest as hydrolytically stable mimetics of their parent O-glycosides. This research reports the development of two general methodologies for the synthesis of highly oxygenated cyclohexanes: (1) Oxocarbenium Ion Cyclization (OCC) and (2) Ring Closing Metathasis (RCM).

Chapter one gives a review of the literature on the synthesis for highly oxygenated cyclohexanes.

(1H-Benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-yloxy)tris(dimethylamino)phosphonium hexafluorophosphate (BOP), 1H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazol-1-yl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (Bt-OTs), and 3H-[1,2,3]triazolo[4,5-b]pyridine-3-yl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (At-OTs) are classically utilized in peptide synthesis for amide-bond formation. However, a previously undescribed reaction of these compounds with alcohols in the presence of a base, leads to 1-alkoxy-1H-benzo- (Bt-OR) and 7-azabenzotriazoles (At-OR). Although BOP undergoes reactions with alcohols to furnish 1-alkoxy-1H-benzotriazoles, Bt-OTs proved to be superior. Both, primary and secondary alcohols undergo reaction under generally mild reaction conditions. Correspondingly, 1-alkoxy-1H-7-azabenzotriazoles were synthesized from At-OTs. Mechanistically, there are three pathways by which these peptide-coupling agents can react with alcohols. From 31P{1H}, [18O]-labeling, and other chemical experiments, phosphonium and tosylate derivatives of …

Interactions Of Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factors And 3' Untranslated Region Of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Mrna During Protein Synthesis: A Study Of Equilibrium Binding, Kinetics And Thermodynamics, Bidisha Banerjee

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 4F binding to mRNA is the first committed step in cap-dependent protein synthesis. Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus (BYDV) employs a cap-independent mechanism of translation initiation which is mediated by a structural element BTE (BYDV translation element) located in the 3’ UTR of its mRNA. eIF4F bound the BTE and a translational inactive mutant with high affinity; thus questioning the role of eIF4F in translation of BYDV. To examine the effects of eIF4F in BYDV translation initiation, BTE mutants with widely different in vitro translation efficiencies ranging from 5-164% compared to WT were studied. Using fluorescence anisotropy …
