Careers In Chemical Information And Science Librarianship, Philip Barnett
Careers In Chemical Information And Science Librarianship, Philip Barnett
Publications and Research
The ceaseless growth of chemical information has created a need for chemical professionals who can organize and disseminate this vast knowledge. If you like to read, enjoy being in a library, or like to work with information on computers, you may want to consider a career in chemical information. While only a small fraction of chemists choose this nontraditional career, they have found fulfillment in many different roles. Chemical information scientists and librarians using the powerful computerized databases now available either provide chemists and other research scientists the information they need, or teach researchers and students how to use these …
Development Of Membrane Film Fiber Optic Based Sensors For The Remote Monitoring Of The Quality Of Surface And Groundwater, Leonidas G. Bachas
Development Of Membrane Film Fiber Optic Based Sensors For The Remote Monitoring Of The Quality Of Surface And Groundwater, Leonidas G. Bachas
KWRRI Research Reports
The objective of this study was the development of chromo- and fluoroionophores and their subsequent use in sensors capable of surface and groundwater monitoring. Several reagents (modified crown ethers and porphyrins) were synthesized based on principles of chemical recognition and used for metal and pH sensing. The modified crown ether reagents include a chromogenic or fluorogenic group. The selectivity of these reagents is controlled by the size of the crown ether ring and the type of the chromogenic or fluorogenic side-arm. In addition, a fluorogenic crown ether was synthesized that incorporates a fluorogenic side-arm and a perfluorinated carbon chain. The …

Here Is Where We Are, M. H. Baker
Here Is Where We Are, M. H. Baker
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Industrial chemistry in the Upper Midwest consists principally of compounding, formulating and specialty manufacturing rather than the production of basic chemicals. The economic position of industrial chemistry is, nevertheless, significant because many of the region's major corporations are employers of technically-trained personnel and are substantial chemical users. This paper provides a non-quantitative overview of chemical technology applications and developments in some of the area's key industries as a record of the past, a measure of current activity, and as a possible indicator for the future. The paper also notes that the large investment demands, complexity of regulations and distance from …
