Piezoelectric Microfiber Composite Actuators For Morphing Wings, Timothy Usher, Kenneth R. Ulibarri, Gilberto S. Camargo Jan 2013

Piezoelectric Microfiber Composite Actuators For Morphing Wings, Timothy Usher, Kenneth R. Ulibarri, Gilberto S. Camargo

Physics Faculty Publications

Morphing wing technologies provide expanded functionality in piloted and robotic aircraft, extending particular vehicle mission parameters as well as increasing the role of aviation in both military and civilian applications. However, realizing control surfaces that do not void the benefits of morphing wings presents challenges that can be addressed with microfiber composite actuators (MFCs). We present two approaches for realizing control surfaces. In one approach, flap-like structures are formed by bonding MFCs to each side of a metal substrate. In the other approach, MFCs are bonded directly to the wing. Counter intuitively, the flap approach resulted in larger voltage actuation …

Excitation Of Radiative Polaritons By Polarized Broadband Infrared Radiation In Thin Oxide Films Deposited By Atomic Layer Deposition, Anita J. Vincent-Johnson, Andrew E. Masters, Xiaofeng Hu, Giovanna Scarel Jan 2013

Excitation Of Radiative Polaritons By Polarized Broadband Infrared Radiation In Thin Oxide Films Deposited By Atomic Layer Deposition, Anita J. Vincent-Johnson, Andrew E. Masters, Xiaofeng Hu, Giovanna Scarel

Department of Physics and Astronomy - Faculty Scholarship

This work contributes to the understanding of infrared radiation interaction with matter and its absorption for energy harvesting purposes. By exciting radiative polaritons in thin oxide filmswith polarized infrared radiation, a further evidence is collected that a link exists between radiative polaritons and the heat recovery mechanism hypothesized in previous research. In the voltage transient occurring when the infrared radiation is turned on, the observed time necessary to reach the maximum voltage and the voltage intensity versus angle of incidence exhibit a mismatch when generated by polarized and nonpolarized infrared radiation. The existence of collective charge oscillation modes in the …

Fundamental Studies And Applications Of Strong Field Ionization, Lu Yan Jan 2013

Fundamental Studies And Applications Of Strong Field Ionization, Lu Yan

Wayne State University Dissertations

In an intense laser field, atoms and molecules experience tunneling ionization directly to the continuum. We used this method to study several aspects and applications of strong field ionization (SFI) in atoms and molecules. One study used SFI to probe the photofragments produced by photodissociation using DC sliced imaging. The photodissociation mechanism of two polyatomic molecules (sulfur dioxide and nitromethane) were investigated. In a second study, we show the strong field ionization rate depends on the sign of the magnetic number distribution. We detect the signal of sequential double ionization of argon dications by a pump-probe method to investigate the …

Uv-Visible Microscope Spectrophotometric Polarization And Dichroism With Increased Discrimination Power In Forensic Analysis, Dale Kevin Purcell

All Open Access Legacy Dissertations and Capstone Projects

Microanalysis of transfer (Trace) evidence is the application of a microscope and microscopical techniques for the collection, observation, documentation, examination, identification, and discrimination of micrometer sized particles or domains. Microscope spectrophotometry is the union of microscopy and spectroscopy for microanalysis. Analytical microspectroscopy is the science of studying the emission, reflection, transmission, and absorption of electromagnetic radiation to determine the structure or chemical composition of microscopic-size materials. Microscope spectrophotometry instrument designs have evolved from monochromatic illumination which transmitted through the microscope and sample and then is detected by a photometer detector (photomultiplier tube) to systems in which broad-band (white light) illumination …

The Roles Of Vertical Advection And Eddy Diffusion In The Equatorial Mesospheric Semi-Annual Oscillation (Msao), R. L. Gattinger, E. Kyrölä, C. D. Boone, W. F.J. Evans, K. A. Walker, I. C. Mcdade, P. F. Bernath, E. J. Llewellyn

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Observations of the mesospheric semi-annual oscillation (MSAO) in the equatorial region have been reported dating back several decades. Seasonal variations in both species densities and airglow emissions are well documented. The extensive observations available offer an excellent case study for comparison with model simulations. A broad range of MSAO measurements is summarised with emphasis on the 80-100 km region. The objective here is not to address directly the complicated driving forces of the MSAO, but rather to employ a combination of observations and model simulations to estimate the limits of some of the underlying dynamical processes. Photochemical model simulations are …

Aqueous Red-Emitting Silicon Nanoparticles For Cellular Imaging: Consequences Of Protecting Against Surface Passivation By Hydroxide And Water For Stable Red Emission, Sheng-Kuei Chiu, Beth Ann Manhat, William J.I. Debenedetti, Anna L. Brown, Katye Fichter, Tania Vu, Micah Eastman, Jun Jiao, Andrea Mitchell Goforth

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Stable, aqueous, red-to-near infrared emission is critical for the use of silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) in biological fluorescence assays, but such Si NPs have been difficult to attain. We report a synthesis and surface modification strategy that protects Si NPs and preserves red photoluminescence (PL) in water for more than 6 mo. The Si NPs were synthesized via high temperature reaction, liberated from an oxide matrix, and functionalized via hydrosilylation to yield hydrophobic particles. The hydrophobic Si NPs were phase transferred to water using the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with retention of red PL. CTAB apparently serves a double role …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Stratospheric chemistry and denitrification are simulated for the Arctic winter 2009/2010 with the Lagrangian Chemistry and Transport Model ATLAS. A number of sensitivity runs is used to explore the impact of uncertainties in chlorine activation and denitrification on the model results. In particular, the efficiency of chlorine activation on different types of liquid aerosol versus activation on nitric acid trihydrate clouds is examined. Additionally, the impact of changes in reaction rate coefficients, in the particle number density of polar stratospheric clouds, in supersaturation, temperature or the extent of denitrification is investigated. Results are compared to satellite measurements of MLS and …

Development Of Improved Models For Gas Sorption Simulation, Keith Mclaughlin Jan 2013

Development Of Improved Models For Gas Sorption Simulation, Keith Mclaughlin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Computational chemistry offers one the ability to develop a better understanding of the complex physical and chemical interactions that are fundamental to macro- and mesoscopic processes that are seen in laboratory experiments, industrial processes, and ordinary, everyday life. For many systems, the physics of interest occur at the molecular or atomistic levels, and in these cases, computational modeling and two well refined simulation techniques become invaluable: Monte Carlo (MC) and molecular dynamics (MD). In this work, two well established problems were tackled. First, models and potentials for various gas molecules were produced and refined from first principles. These models, although …

In Situ Measurements Of Electron-Beam-Induced Surface Voltage Of Highly Resistive Materials, Joshua Hodges Dec 2012

In Situ Measurements Of Electron-Beam-Induced Surface Voltage Of Highly Resistive Materials, Joshua Hodges

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Surface charging and subsequent electrostatic discharge due to interactions with the space environment is one of the primary concerns of spacecraft charging studies. Laboratory measurements of the evolution of surface voltages and dissipation currents under simulated space conditions are the primary method used to determine the response of key spacecraft materials to diverse incident fluxes. Increasing the database of information for the electronic properties of insulating materials can assist spacecraft designers in mitigating the harsh effects of the space environment.

The Utah State Materials Physics Group, with the funding of the NASA James Webb Space Telescope project and personnel support …

Dynamical Reaction Pathways In Eley-Rideal Recombination Of Nitrogen From W(100), Ernesto Quintas-Sánchez, P. Larrégaray, C. Crespos, L. Martin-Gondre, J. Rubayo-Soneira, J. C. Rayez

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The scattering of atomic nitrogen over a N-pre-adsorbed W(100) surface is theoretically described in the case of normal incidence off a single adsorbate. Dynamical reaction mechanisms, in particular Eley-Rideal (ER) abstraction, are scrutinized in the 0.1-3.0 eV collision energy range and the influence of temperature on reactivity is considered between 300 and 1500 K. Dynamics simulations suggest that, though non-activated reaction pathways exist, the abstraction process exhibits a significant collision energy threshold (0.5 eV). Such a feature, which has not been reported so far in the literature, is the consequence of a repulsive interaction between the impinging and the pre-adsorbed …

Evaluating Actinide Sorption To Graphite With Regards To Triso Repository Performance, Corey Christopher Keith Aug 2012

Evaluating Actinide Sorption To Graphite With Regards To Triso Repository Performance, Corey Christopher Keith

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Graphite has the potential for inclusion in nuclear waste for disposal in waste repository settings. Implementation of High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors contributes to this potential through use of TRISO fuel, if direct disposal of the graphite matrix surrounding the fuel is employed. The inclusion of the large mass and volume in the TRISO fuel waste form differs significantly from used light water reactor fuel waste forms, requiring new performance models to describe the behavior in a repository setting. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential for the graphite to improve actinide, specifically uranium and neptunium, retardation from …

Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy Study Of Protein Transport And Dynamic Interactions With Clustered-Charge Peptide Adsorbents, Lydia Kisley Jul 2012

Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy Study Of Protein Transport And Dynamic Interactions With Clustered-Charge Peptide Adsorbents, Lydia Kisley

Faculty Scholarship

Ion-exchange chromatography relies on electrostatic interactions between the adsorbent and the adsorbate and is used extensively in protein purification. Conventional ion-exchange chromatography uses ligands that are singly charged and randomly dispersed over the adsorbent, creating a heterogeneous distribution of potential adsorption sites. Clustered-charge ion exchangers exhibit higher affinity, capacity, and selectivity than their dispersed-charge counterparts of the same total charge density. In the present work, we monitored the transport behavior of an anionic protein near clustered-charge adsorbent surfaces using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. We can resolve protein-free diffusion, hindered diffusion, and association with bare glass, agarose-coated, and agarose-clustered peptide surfaces, demonstrating …

Angular And Dynamical Properties In Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering: Case Study Of Chlorine-Containing Molecules, Renaud Guillemin, Wayne C. Stolte, Loic Journel, Stephane Carniato, Maria Novella Piancastelli, Dennis W. Lindle, Marc Simon

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

Polarization-dependent resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has been shown to be a probe of molecular-field effects on the electronic structure of isolated molecules. In this experimental analysis we explain the linear dichroism observed in Cl 2p polarized RIXS following Cl 1s excitation of a series of chlorofluoromethanes (CF3Cl, CF2Cl2, CFCl3, and CCl4) as due to molecular-field effects, including singlet-triplet exchange. We present an approach to extract directly the 2p inner-shell electronic state populations from the experimental measurements. Using the angular properties of the measured KV emission we also are able to determine the value of the polarization anisotropy parameter βp …

Community associated Staphylococcus aureus (strain MSSA476) is a gram positive cocci capable of infecting many different parts of the body and known to cause serious infections that can be fatal, such as bacterial arthritis and acute endocarditis. To find effective ways of fighting against CA-MRSA strains we must learn more about their ability to infect. The focus of this study was cloning and characterization of a protein referred to as SAS0754. The size of SAS0754 is 340 amino acids and the gene sequence is 1023 nucleotides. The hypothetical function of this protein is that it is an extracellular matrix binding …

A Convenient Synthesis Of 2,6-Dichlorohomonicotinic Acid, Chase Buchanan, Richard W. Fitch May 2012

A Convenient Synthesis Of 2,6-Dichlorohomonicotinic Acid, Chase Buchanan, Richard W. Fitch

Symposium 2012

In our synthetic efforts toward the alkaloid phantasmidine, we required a convenient source of the title compound. Herein, we describe a short synthesis of 2,6-dichlorohomonicotinic acid by direct allylation of 2,6-dichloropyridine with LDA/allyl chloride, followed by permanganate oxidation of the side chain [figure1]. Yields for the allylation are high, while permanganate oxidation required more adjustment. Successful conditions require the modest acidification of the mixture with acetic acid and cleanup by acid base workup. No chromatography is needed.

Convenient Parallel Synthesis Of Alkyl- And Aryl-S-Tert-Butyl Thiothers, Rebecca Norcross, Jessica Stanfield, Richard W. Fitch

Symposium 2012

While preparing novel cysteine derivatives as oxidation catalysts, we needed S-tert-butylcysteine. We also examined acid-promoted tert-butylation of thiols using tert-butanol as reagent and solvent. While cysteine and aminoethanethiol work well using tBuOH in 4M HCl, other thiols fail in the aqueous environment and aerobic conditions. We examined a variety of aliphatic and aromatic thiols in tBuOH with H2SO4 catalysis and found that argon sparging and the use of 1 eq of acid led to good yields in a parallel format.

Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard Apr 2012

Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard

Articles

We establish geometric properties of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds which arise in relation to Slatertype variational spaces in many-particle Hartree-Fock theory and beyond. In particular, we prove thatthey are analytic homogeneous spaces and submanifolds of the space of bounded operators on the single-particle Hilbert space. As a by-product we obtain that they are complete Finsler manifolds. These geometric properties underpin state-of-the-art results on existence of solutions to Hartree-Fock type equations.
