The electrodeposition of cobalt from a solution containing cobalt chloride in either a urea-choline chloride based or an ethylene glycol (EG)-choline chloride based ionic liquid has been carried out onto copper and steel cathodes by constant current and constant potential methods at different temperatures. The influences of various experimental conditions on electrodeposition and morphology of the deposited layers have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD)technique. Here we present the synthesis and characterization of a hybrid vanadium-organic coordination polymer with robust magnetic order, a Curie temperature TC of ∼110 K, a coercive field of ∼5 Oe at 5 K, and a maximum mass magnetization of about half that of the benchmark ferrimagnetic vanadium(tetracyanoethylene)~2 (V·(TCNE)~2). This material was prepared using a new tetracyano-substituted quinoidal organic small molecule 7 based on a tricyclic heterocycle 4-hexyl-4H-pyrrolo[2,3-d:5,4-d′]bis(thiazole) (C6-PBTz). Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a prominent area of research with major applications in solar energy conversion, air pollution mitigation, and removal of contaminants from water. A large number of scientific papers related to the photocatalysis field and its environmental applications are published in different journals specializing in materials and nanomaterials. Ultrafine Mineral Associations In Superhigh-Organic-Sulfur Kentucky Coals, James C. Hower, Debora Berti, Michael F. Hochella Jr.

Two high-organic-sulfur Kentucky coals, the eastern Kentucky River Gem coal and the western Kentucky Davis coal, are examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), both including elemental analysis by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). From the SEM–EDS analysis, it is observed that the western Kentucky coal had areas with Pb and Cd in addition to the expected Fe and S and the eastern Kentucky coal had individual Fe–S-rich areas with La and Ni and with Si, Al, Cr, Ni, and Ti. A heterogeneous catalyst system, employing Au nanoparticles (NPs) and Li–Al (1 : 2) layered double hydroxide (LDH) as support, showed excellent activity in aerobic oxidation of the benzylic alcohol group in β-O-4 linked lignin model dimers to the corresponding carbonyl products using molecular oxygen under atmospheric pressure. The synergistic effect between Au NPs and the basic Li–Al LDH support induces further reaction of the oxidized model compounds, facilitating facile cleavage of the β-O-4 linkage. Extension to oxidation of γ-valerolactone (GVL) extracted lignin and kraft lignin using Au/Li–Al LDH under similar conditions produced a range of aromatic monomers in high yield. …

The demand for a new generation of flexible, portable, and high-capacity power sources increases rapidly with the development of advanced wearable electronic devices. Only with both high gravimetric and high volumetric energy densities, can supercapacitors find more extensive applications.In this paper, by making good use of the interesting nanostructures and the high packing densities of RuO2 (nanoshpheres,1.69 g·cm-3) and Co-Ni oxide (nanoflakes, 2.14 g·cm-3), the RuO2//KOH//Co-Ni oxide all-metal oxide asymmetric supercapacitors with high performance were successfully fabricated, which led to the maximum specific capacitance of 217.5 F·g-1 (412.3 F·cm-3) and specific energy density of 61.8 Wh·kg-1 (121 Wh·L-1) in a cell voltage between 0 and 1.5 V in KOH electrolyte. …

Cyclic voltammetry and potential step methods were successfully used to study the electrochemical crystallization mechanism of silver deposition on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in the practical cyanide-free silver plating electrolyte containing composite complexing agents. Scharifker-Hill (SH) theory was used to fitting the experimental data. The results showed that the electrodeposition of silver is a diffusion controlled irreversible electrode process according to three-dimensional instantaneous nucleation mechanism. When the step potential shifted from -750 mV to -825 mV, the peak deposition current Im was increased, while the induced nucleation time tm shortened. Nano-manganese oxide loaded on titanium electrocatalytic membrane electrodes (nano-MnOx/Ti) were synthesized bysol-gel method using porous Ti membrane as a substrate and the manganese acetate as a raw material without releasing NOx. Neodymium (Nd) doped titanium (Ti)-based lead dioxide (PbO2) composite anode was prepared by electrodeposition. The surface morphologies and crystal structures of the as-prepared anodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, respectively. The electrochemical performances of PbO2-Nd anode were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry. Additionally, the electrocatalytic activity and durability of PbO2-Nd anode were investigated through the degradation of simulative refractory organic wastewater of phenol. In this work, a promising flexible composite consisting of zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni) and aluminum (Al) layered double hydroxide coated carbon fibers (ZnNi/Al-LDHs/CFs) was prepared by electrochemical method with convenient recovery and separation. The structures, morphologies, and photo-electro catalytic properties of ZnNi/Al-LDHs/CFs were characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. In this work, NaxMnO2 was synthesized by a solid-state reaction. The influences of Na:Mn ratio on the structure, morphology and electrochemical performance, and sodium ion intercalation/deintercalation processes were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge-discharge test. Organic field effect transistors (OFETs) offer many advantages compared to traditional inorganic transistors, such as flexibility and solution processability. In this study we design and synthesize two thienoisatin-based organic semiconducting small molecules, then investigate their electronic properties in n-type OFETs. To introduce n-type charge transport, electron-withdrawing dicarbonitrile moieties were installed on thienoisoindigo and bis-thienoisatin molecules, which led to a quinoidal conjugation on thienoisoindigo, while maintaining an aromatic conjugation on the bis-thienoisatin. Gold monolayer-protected nanoclusters (MPCs) with average diameters of 1-5 nm protected by alkane- and arenethiolates were synthesized. Mixed-monolayer protected nanoparticles (MMPCs) were prepared by functionalizing hexanethiolate-protected MPCs with either 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA-MMPC), 11-mercaptoundecanol (MUO-MMPC), or 4-aminothiophenol (ATP-MMPC) using ligand place exchange. Presentation of various chemical reagents such as nucleophile, acid, or base and change in physical environment through ultrasonic and thermal irradiation resulted in changes to particles and their physical properties. A recent research study has been undertaken to develop facilities for conducting detonation synthesis of nanomaterials. This process involves a familiar technique that has been utilized for the industrial synthesis of nanodiamonds. Developments through this study have allowed for experimentation with the concept of modifying explosive compositions to induce synthesis of new nanomaterials. Initial experimentation has been conducted with the end goal being synthesis of alpha variant silicon carbide (α-SiC) in the nano-scale. Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are commonly found in many portable electronic appliances due to their ability to be rechargeable. Currently, commercial anodes in Li-ion batteries (graphite) have a theoretical capacity of around 372 mAh/g, while FeCo2O4 that will be investigated as the anode material has a theoretical capacity of 901.985mAh/g, more than double of the current commercial anode’s capacity. Earlier work done by Sharma et al also showed that FeCo2O4 has a very promising initial capacity of 827mAh/g. Fuel cells are highly recommended nowadays due to their intrinsic advantages such as high energy conversion efficiency, nearly no pollution, and convenient operation. With the development of anion exchange membrane, alkaline fuel cells have gone through a renaissance thanks to their superiorities such as faster reaction kinetics, wider choices for both fuels and electrocatalysts. It is essential to find an appropriate electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to improve the performance of alkaline fuel cells. A pulse charge method was used to suppress the formation of lithium dendrite on the copper electrode in 0.5 mol·L-1 LiBr/propylene carbonate (PC) electrolyte. The surface variation of lithium deposition was investigated by scanning electron microscope and impedance measurement. The SEM test showed that the lithium dendrites were formed on the copper electrode during the traditional process of electrodeposition. However, the formed dendrite was suppressed by pulse charge method. The results of the impedance measurement confirmed that the pulse electrodeposition could suppress the dendrite under the optimized duty ratio (0.5). By using graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet (g-C3N4 nanosheet) as a support,Pt/g-C3N4 nanosheet catalyst was fabricated by microwave assisted polylol process. The nanoparticles size,composition,structure and optical properties of Pt/g-C3N4 nanosheet were characterized by TEM,XRD,XPS and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Comparing with the catalytic activities toward formic acid electro-oxidation under dark and visible light illumination,the superior activity of Pt/g-C3N4 nanosheet catalyst was achieved under visible light illumination. In this work, a novel hydrogen peroxide electrochemical sensor was constructed with ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles, which demonstrated good electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen peroxide. There existed a good linear relationship between the concentration of hydrogen peroxide and the oxidation peak current in the range of 1.00 × 10-6 ~ 1.00 × 10-3 mol·L-1 (R = 0.9980) with the detection limit of 6.60 × 10-7 mol·L-1. The sensor exhibited good anti-interference ability, high reproducibility and stability.

Platinum (Pt) catalysts modified by other suitable metals significantly enhance their electrochemical activities for formic acid oxidation. In this work, a titanium-supported nanoporous network platinum (nanoPt/Ti) electrode was prepared using a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared nanoPt/Ti electrode was modified with a certain amount of lead by using cyclic voltammetry for different scan cycle numbers (n), namely, n = 10, 15, 20 and 30, to synthesize the novel lead-modified nanoporous Pt (nanoPb(n)-Pt/Ti) electrodes. This work was intended to study the effect of free radicals on the chemical stability of catalyst layer via ex situ accelerated stress test (AST). Fenton reagent was used as the free radical provider in this research. Apart from the decomposition of Nafion in catalyst layer, the agglomerated Pt nanoparticles and the corroded carbon support were also observed after being treated in Fenton reagent for 100 h. Metal–organic framework(MOF) is a kind of novel electrode materials for lithium ion batteries. Here, a composite material Co3(HCOO)6@rGO was synthesized for the first time by in situ loading of Co3(HCOO)6 on rGO (reduced oxide graphene) through a solution chemistry method. As an anode material for lithium ion batteries, it exhibited an excellent cycle stability as well as a large reversible capacity of 926 mAh·g-1 at a current density of 500 mA·g-1 after 100 cycles within the voltage range of 0.02 ~ 3.0 V vs. Li/Li+ with a good rate capability. …

In this work, the carbon coated silicon (Si@C) composite materials were synthesized based on the industrial silicon powder (600 meshes) via a high energy ball milling combing with in-situ carbon coating (carbonization) method. The Si@C/graphite (Si/C) composite anode materials were prepared by a simple mechanical ball-milling approach. The effects of carbon coating and the ratio of Si to graphite on electrochemical performances of Si/graphite composite materials were investigated systematically. The silver-titanium dioxide co-modified manganese dioxide (Ag-TiO2-MnO2) cathode material was prepared through high temperature solid state reaction. The microstructure, phase composition and electrochemical performance of the prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
