This trial is difficult to analyze statistically because of the treatment changes induced by sheep breaking in to some of the plots. Further, lupin grain yields were not very high and so differences between harvested and unharvested treatments are not large. Also the grazing intensity was not very severe (except on the unintentionally grazed plots) and so the effect of grazing is also relatively small.

It has been suggested that high levels of phosphorus application to lupins can reduce the impact of leaf and root diseases. Two old rotation trials provided a range of disease burdens, across which phosphate rates on lupins were applied. Disease scores, vegetative yields, phosphorus concentration and seed yields were measured.

4th successive crop on new land. Trial has shown that the effectiveness of the different types of rock phosphate were about the fifth to one tenth as effective as the fresh (triple) superphosphate applied in 1984. The effectiveness of the superphosphate, decreased by 60 between year 1 and 2, and by a further 10-15% by 1987. Pentafluorosulfur (VI) bromide (SF₅Br) adds to olefins of the form CX₂=CX₂, where X= H or F, with the pentafluorosulfur group usually adding to the carbon with more hydrogens attached to it. This series of compounds was used in an attempt to prepare the corresponding sulfonic acid hydrates of the general formula SF₅CX₂CX₂SO₃H·nH₂O, in order to have these compounds tested as possible fuel cell electrolytes. A sample cell and delivery system for rapid matrix isolation of gas mixtures at constant gas temperature was designed and evaluated. The rotational energy differences of 1,2-dichlorosthane and of its deuterium compound wars then determined to test this technique.

The rotational energy barriers calculated from Boltzman plots of ths gases at different temperatures were; 1.21 + 0.38 keel/mole, 1.33 + 0.70 Real/mole, and 1.12 + 0.45 kcal/mole for the CH2 wagging„ C-Cl stretching and CD₂ wagging modes respectively. These values were in good agreement with previously published values.

Electrochemical studies of Sb, Sb(III), and Sb(V) have been camed out in molten mixtures of AlC13 and N-1-butylpyridinium chloride (BuPyCl) at 40 OC, as a function of melt composition. Analysis of measurements in the acidic melts indicates SbC12+ as the dominant species. The reduction of this species on glassy carbon exhibits irreversible behavior. In the basic melts, SbC14- and SbC1,- are believed to be the dominant species. The reduction of Sb(II1) to Sb on glassy carbon also showed irreversible behavior while its oxidation to Sb(W revealed a quasi-reversible behavior. No Sb(II1) oxidation was observed in the acidic melts.

A new preparative route to the only neutral chromium(V) oxide fluoride, chromium oxide trifluoride, has been accomplished by the reaction of xenon difluoride with chromyl fluoride at high temperature. The chromium oxide trifluoride is produced as crystals which are suitable for single crystal studies. In reactions of chromium oxide trifluoride with alkali and alkaline metal fluorides in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, new chromium(V) oxide fluoride salts were obtained; these salts were not of high purity due to unknown problems. The study of the reaction of cadmium and sulfur in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is presented. Specifically, the reaction of dissolved molecular sulfur in DMSO at temperatures greater than 90°C with freshly precipitated metallic cadmium is followed by UV-visible spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrometry, and Raman spectrometry. Evidence for the formation of a new cadmium-sulfur species and S₃^- is discussed. In a second reaction, an equilibrium sodium polysulfide solution in DMSO is titrated with a solution of cadmium ion at room temperature and the reaction progress is followed by means of UV-visible spectrometry. Pure chromium oxide trifluoride was prepared for the first time by reaction of CrO₃ and ClF with subsequent multiple fluorine treatments at 120°C. On the basis of its infrared spectrum, the purple CrOF₃ was assigned as a fluorine-bridged polymer with terminal oxygen groups. Chromium oxide trifluoride was found to be stable to 300°C, where it decomposes with the loss of oxygen to CrF₃.

A photolysis system was designed for meticulous exclusion of oxygen and moisture. Photolyzed ethanol solutions of dioxobis(acetylacetonato)­-molybdenum(VI), Mo0₂ (acac)₂, were studied via preparation of derivatives with several uninegative bidentate ligands (chelH, cysteine was designated cystH₂) and pyridine (py). Infrared spectroscopy was a useful tool in identifying these compounds. An oxomolybdenum(IV) compound, MoO(dtc)₂ was isolated from the red photolyzed solution when dtc was the N,N-diethyldithiocarbamate ion. Addition compounds of the monosubstituted derivative of sulfur tetrafluoride, trifluormethlysulfur trifluoride with the Lewis acids PF₅, BF_3, AsF₅, and SbF₅ were prepared, isolated and characterized. On the basis of their infrared spectra, it is suggested that these new compounds can be classified as types of fluoronium adducts and that their ionic formulation can be expressed as CF₃SF₂⁺MF^-_n+1 where MF_n represents the acceptor used.
