Theoretical And Experimental Evaluation Of Hysteresis In Atmospheric Chemistry, Theodore Alan Haigh
Theoretical And Experimental Evaluation Of Hysteresis In Atmospheric Chemistry, Theodore Alan Haigh
Dissertations and Theses
This treatise is a recapitulation of the theoretical and experimental study of hysteresis in atmospheric kinetics. The original problem arose from a theoretical study of a series of reactions for clean air. Upon evaluation a bistable equilibrium was predicted. The steady-state analysis had delineated a metastable region for the set of reactions. This bounded region is the hysteresis that this research project evaluated.
Reactions Of Aqueous Chlorine With Valine In Model Solutions And In Wastewater, Erika Forrer Mccormick
Reactions Of Aqueous Chlorine With Valine In Model Solutions And In Wastewater, Erika Forrer Mccormick
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Solutions of the amino acid valine were chlorinated to seven chlorine-to-nitrogen mole (Cl/N) ratios and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The chlorination products found were N-chlorovaline, isobutyraldehyde, isobutyronitrile, and N-chloroisobutyraldimine. Their product distribution depends on the level of chlorination and pH. The main products identified at the lower CI/N mole ratios were N-chlorovaline and isobutyraldehyde, whereas at the higher CI/N mole ratios isobutyronitrile and N-chloroisobutyraldimine were identified as the main products. The concentration and the chlorination products of valine in municipal wastewater were also determined. The chlorination products of …

On-Road Remote Sensing Of Co Emissions In The Los Angeles Basin, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop, James E. Peterson, Paul L. Guenther
Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications
The University of Denver remote sensor for on-road motor vehicle carbon monoxide emissions was used for eleven days in the Los Angeles Basin in December, 1989. The remote sensor has been incorporated into the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments as "on-road emissions testing". The device measures the CO/CO2 ratio for one-half second behind each vehicle, from which the exhaust %CO is calculated. Vehicles were measured in a mix of many driving modes and speeds ranging from deceleration coming up to a red traffic light through idling in heavy congestion up to accelerations and cruises entering a freeway ramp at …
Analytical Modeling And Simulation For Investigation Of A Digital Gas Filter Correlation Radiometer, Catherine P. Mcgowan
Analytical Modeling And Simulation For Investigation Of A Digital Gas Filter Correlation Radiometer, Catherine P. Mcgowan
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis investigates a digital gas filter correlation radiometer called the Tropospheric Radiometer for Atmospheric Chemistry and Environmental Research (TRACER), which will be used to remotely measure carbon monoxide at three levels in the troposphere. The nadir-viewing radiometer measures the differential absorption of radiation through the atmosphere at 4.67@m and 2.33pm wavelengths. This thesis develops an analytical model of the TRACER measurement process to evaluate the effect of varying certain system parameters on the measurement. The independent sampling criterion and the response of linear systems to random signals are explained. A parametric simulation model is also developed to evaluate the …

Evaluation Of A Remote Sensor For Mobile Source Co Emissions, Donald H. Stedman, Gary A. Bishop, Marc Pitchford
Fuel Efficiency Automobile Test Publications
Carbon monoxide (CO) emission measurements of thousands of vehicles per day are possible with a recently evaluated remote sensor developed at the University of Denver. Funded by the Environmental Monitoring Systems Laboratory - Las Vegas (EMSL- LV) Innovative Research Program, the evaluation has demonstrated the comparability of volume concentration measurements made by this method with traditional emission monitoring instrumentation. Measurements are made unobtrusively as vehicles pass through an infrared light beam directed across one traffic lane about 25 centimeters above the pavement. A video camera records the vehicle registration number of each vehicle as its CO emissions are measured so …

Characterization Of Organic Sulfur Compounds In Coals And Coal Macerals, Stephen R. Palmer, Edwin J. Hippo, Michael A. Kruge, John C. Crelling
Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Peroxyacetic acid oxidation has been used to investigate the type and distribution of organic sulfur species in samples of vitrinite, sporinite and inertinite, separated from the Herrin No.6 and an Indiana No.5 coal seam. It was established that organic sulfur species were selectively preserved during oxidation and their analysis led to some of the first sulfur-33 NMR spectra obtained for coal. The effects of maceral separation processes on model compounds were also studied. Results from our studies support the following conclusions: 1). Different macerals have different distributions and types of organic sulfur species. 2). Organic sulfur compounds in coal occur …

Paleogeography And Paleoenvironments Of The Lower Unit, Fossil Butte Member, Eocene Green River Formation, Southwestern Wyoming, Roberto Enrique Biaggi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
During Eocene time sediment accumulated in Fossil Lake, in what developed to be a small linear and structurally controlled basin. Fossil Lake was one of several lakes into which the Green River Formation was deposited in Wyoming, Utah and Colorado.
Detailed stratigraphic analysis of the Lower Unit of the Fossil Butte Member revealed a well developed lacustrine sequence south of Fossil Butte, and indicates four major depositional facies: (1) open lacustrine, (2) marginal lacustrine, (3) carbonate mudflat, and (4) marginal fluvio-deltaic. The open lacustrine facies is characterized by kerogen rich to kerogen poor finely laminated micrites , that consist mainly …

Total Maximum Daily Loads And Waste Load Allocations For Las Vegas Bay: Rationale And Calulations, State Of Nevada: Division Of Environmental Protection
Publications (WR)
In September 1987 the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection revised Water Quality Standards for Las Vegas Wash (LVW) and Lake Mead. Standards were set for chlorophyll-a and unionized ammonia in Las Vegas Bay (LVB) (NDEP 1987). The 1986 and 1987 LVB data showed non-achievement of both the chlorophyll-a and unionized ammonia standard which triggered an analysis of total phosphorus and total ammonia Total Maximum Daily Loads and Waste Load Allocations which are presented in this report. This report is separated into three sections: 1. 1987 Las Vegas Bay Water Quality Conditions and Seasonal Periodicity. 2. Concentration Estimates at Northshore Road …
The Nitrogen Response Of Wheat Crops Following Lupins, I C. Rowland, Mel Mason, John Hamblin
The Nitrogen Response Of Wheat Crops Following Lupins, I C. Rowland, Mel Mason, John Hamblin
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
One of the many benefitsof growing narrow-leaved lupins in a crop rotation (Rowland et al 1988) in the increased yield of the following cereal crop as a result of the improved nitrogen level of the soil.
This article reports the results from 41 wheat/lupin rotation trials involving a range of nitrogen rates throughout the Western Australian agricultural area between 1978 and 1987. These trials allowed scientists to assess the interaction of nitrogen fertilization with previous cropping history and to estimate some of the contribution of the nitrogen and other effects of lupins within the crop rotations. The results provide some …
Intensive Animal Industries In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, R W. Payne
Intensive Animal Industries In The Peel-Harvey Catchment, R W. Payne
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The Swan coastal plain to the north and south of Perth is attractive for the intensive production of pigs and poultry for several reasons. It is close to markets, feed manufacturers and labour; has a less extreme climate than inland areas; and is underlain by a large reserve of high quality groundwater.
Because these are all intensive operations, large quantaties of nutrient-rich waste are produced over a very small area. They can severely damage ground and surface waters unless steps are taken to control the wastes which they produce.
This article oulines both the nature of intensive aniamal industries in …

An Analysis Of The Inhibitory Effects Of Linolenic Acid Upon Photosystem Ii Of Higher Plants, Mark Edward Iven
An Analysis Of The Inhibitory Effects Of Linolenic Acid Upon Photosystem Ii Of Higher Plants, Mark Edward Iven
Dissertations and Theses
This study utilizes steady state fluorescence measurements, flash-induced P680+ absorption transients, and DCIP reduction kinetics to study the inhibitory effects of linolenic acid (LA) upon Photosystem II (PSII) in whole spinach chloroplasts and insideout wheat thylakoids. It confirms the presence within PSII of LA-induced inhibition of energy trapping and/or primary charge separation (i.e., primary inhibition), in addition to donor side inhibition. The latter is diminished in the presence of 1,5-Diphenylcarbohydrazide (DPC) and probably takes place at the oxygen evolving complex. Primary inhibition, which is more controversial, probably occurs between Ph and QA, with a likely contribution at the level of …

The Chemistry Of Sulfonyl Fluorides: Sf5 And/Or So2f Containing Compounds As Precursors To Sulfonic Acids, Robin Joyce Terjeson
Dissertations and Theses
Sulfonyl fluoride systems and their derivatives, RS02F, where R represents hydrocarbon/fluorocarbon moieties continue to be of considerable interest. The incorporation of the sulfonyl fluoride group (S02F) into molecular systems can lead to compounds that are useful as ion-exchange resins, surface active agents, fuel cell electrolytes, and strong sulfonic acids/salts.
Interest in preparing SF5 containing sulfonyl fluorides led to the synthesis of the ᵝ-sultone, SF5CHCF20S02, and its rearranged product. Hydrolysis of the sultone gave SF5CH2S02F which led to the sulfonic acid and salt, SF …
Chemical Modification Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Vesicles: A Study Of Calcium Permeability, Janice F. Stuart
Chemical Modification Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Vesicles: A Study Of Calcium Permeability, Janice F. Stuart
Dissertations and Theses
Skeletal muscle contains an internal membrane system called the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) whose function is to regulate the Ca2+ concentration of the myoplasm. Ca2+ is transported into the SR from the myoplasm via a Ca2+ dependent ATPase thus lowering the myoplasmic Ca2+ concentration. Ca2+ exits from the SR via a Ca2+ releqse pathway resultingin the increase of myoplasmic Ca2+. Muscles contract when the myoplasmic Ca2+ concentration is > 5 uM and relax when the Ca2+ concentration is lowered below 1 uM. The Ca2+ dependent ATPase has been extensively studied but …
