Do The Broad Emission Line Clouds See The Same Continuum That We See?, Kirk Korista, Gary J. Ferland, Jack Baldwin
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Recent observations of quasars, Mrk 335 and the HST quasar composite spectrum, have indicated that many quasars have remarkably soft ionizing continua (f ∝ ~ ν-2, 13.6-100 eV). We point out that the number of photons with hν > 54.4 eV is insufficient to create the observed strengths of the He II emission lines. While the numbers of photons which energize C IV λ1549 and O VI λ1034 are sufficient, even the most efficiently emitting clouds for these two lines must each cover at least 20%-40% of the source. If the typical quasar ionizing continuum is indeed this …

Locally Optimally Emitting Clouds And The Narrow Emission Lines In Seyfert Galaxies, Jason W. Ferguson, Kirk T. Korista, Jack A. Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The narrow emission line spectra of active galactic nuclei are not accurately described by simple photoionization models of single clouds. Recent Hubble Space Telescope images of Seyfert 2 galaxies show that these objects are rich with ionization cones, knots, filaments, and strands of ionized gas. Here we extend to the narrow-line region the ``locally optimally emitting cloud'' (LOC) model, in which the observed spectra are predominantly determined by powerful selection effects. We present a large grid of photoionization models covering a wide range of physical conditions and show the optimal conditions for producing many of the strongest emission lines. We …

The Eclipsing Double-Lined Spectroscopic Binary System V505 Persei, Laurence A. Marschall, Robert P. Stefanik, Claud H. Lacy, Guillermo Torres, David B. Williams, Franz Agerer
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The recently-discovered eclipsing double-lined spectroscopic binary V505 Persei (SAO 23229) consists of two nearly identical F5 main sequence stars in a 4.2 day orbit. We have obtained both spectroscopic and photometric observations of the binary that densely sample the complete cycle of radial velocity and light variations. These observations have been used to determine the elements of the orbit, to determine individual masses of the stars in the system to a precision of better than 1%, and to estimate an age for the system. The derived properties agree well with current stellar structure models and provide fundamental data for tests …

We estimate rate coefficients for charge transfer between neutral hydrogen and helium and moderately to highly ionized heavy elements. Although charge transfer does not have much influence on hot collisionally ionized plasmas, its effects on photoionized plasmas can be profound. We present several photoionization models that illustrate the significant effect of charge transfer on the far-infrared lines detected by ISO.

Physical Conditions Of The Coronal Line Region In Seyfert Galaxies, Jason W. Ferguson, Kirk Korista, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The launch of the Infrared Space Observatory and new atomic data have opened a window for the study of high-ionization gas in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We present the results of a large number of photoionization simulations of the "coronal line" region in AGNs, employing new atomic data from the Opacity and Iron Projects. Our grid of line emission spans 8 orders of magnitude in gas density and 14 orders of magnitude in ionizing flux in an effort to identify the optimal conditions in which these lines form. We show that coronal lines form at distances from just outside the …
Accurate Hydrogen Spectral Simulations With A Compact Model Atom, Jason W. Ferguson, Gary J. Ferland
Accurate Hydrogen Spectral Simulations With A Compact Model Atom, Jason W. Ferguson, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Many large-scale numerical simulations of astrophysical plasmas must also reproduce the hydrogen ionization and the resulting emission spectrum, in some cases quite accurately. We describe a compact model hydrogen atom that can be readily incorporated into such simulations. It reproduces the recombination efficiency and line spectrum predicted by much larger calculations for a very broad range of densities and temperatures. Uncertainties in hydrogen collision data are the largest source of differences between our compact atom and predictions of more extensive calculations and underscore the need for accurate atomic data.
Grains In Ionized Nebulae. Ii. Heavy-Element Depletion, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland
Grains In Ionized Nebulae. Ii. Heavy-Element Depletion, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The presence of grains in gaseous nebulae can have significant effects on the thermal balance and radiative line transfer in these objects. The depletion of condensable elements onto grains provides evidence that dust exists in the ionized regions of nebulae. In this paper, we consider the elements Sc, Ti, V, and Cr, all of which are strongly depleted in the general interstellar medium. We construct simple three-level atoms for several ions of these elements, and incorporate them into our photoionization code CLOUDY. For both a model planetary nebula and a model H II region, we find that several lines of …

An Atlas Of Computed Equivalent Widths Of Quasar Broad Emission Lines, Kirk Korista, Jack Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, Dima Verner
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present graphically the results of several thousand photoionization calculations of broad emission-line clouds in quasars, spanning 7 orders of magnitude in hydrogen ionizing flux and particle density. The equivalent widths of 42 quasar emission lines are presented as contours in the particle density-ionizing flux plane for a typical incident continuum shape, solar chemical abundances, and cloud column density of N(H) = 1023 cm-2. Results are similarly given for a small subset of emission lines for two other column densities (1022 and 1024 cm-2), five other incident continuum shapes, and a gas …

On Protostellar Disks In Herbig Ae/Be Stars, Anatoly Miroshnichenko, Željko Ivezić, Moshe Elitzur
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The spectral shape of IR emission from Herbig Ae/Be stars has been invoked as evidence for accretion disks around high-mass protostars. Instead, we present here models based on spherical envelopes with an r-1.5 dust density profile that successfully explain the observed spectral shapes. The spectral energy distributions of eight primary candidates for protostellar disks are fitted in detail for all wavelengths available, from visual to far-IR. The only envelope property adjusted in individual sources is the overall visual optical depth, and it ranges from 0.3 to 3. In each case, our models properly reproduce the data for IR excess, …

Using the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope, we measured the flux of [Fe IV] (3d5 4P5/2 --> 3d5 6S5/2) λvac = 2836.56 Å in the Orion Nebula, the first detection of an [Fe IV] line in an H II region. A useful upper limit is set on the sum of fluxes of [Fe IV] (3d5 4D5/2, 3/2 --> 3d5 6S5/2) λvac = 2568.4, 2568.2 Å. By comparing these observations with predicted fluxes from simply ``retrofitting'' our two previous photoionization models, …

We reexamine the spectroscopic underpinnings of recent suggestions that [O I] and [Fe II] lines from the Orion H II region are produced in gas where the iron-carrying grains have been destroyed and the electron density is surprisingly high. Our new observations show that previous detections of [O I] 5577 were dominated by telluric emission. Our limits are consistent with a moderate density (≈ 104 cm-3) photoionized gas. We show that a previously proposed model of the Orion H II region reproduces the observed [O I] and [Fe II] spectrum. These lines are fully consistent with formation …
Bringing The Moon Into The Classroom, Laurence A. Marschall
Bringing The Moon Into The Classroom, Laurence A. Marschall
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Understanding the phases of the Moon is a perennial stumbling block in introductory astronomy classes. In the film, "A Private Universe," for instance, both Harvard graduates and gifted high-school students display serious misconceptions about the Moon's phases, believing, among other things, that the Earth's shadow on the Moon is the cause of it all. Part of the problem may stem from textbook illustrations that show a view of the Moon in orbit around the Earth with the Sun of to one side. Students have trouble converting mentally from this "God's eye" perspective into the "geocentric" perspective we experience as observers …
Rate Coefficients For Charge Transfer Between Hydrogen And The First 30 Elements, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland
Rate Coefficients For Charge Transfer Between Hydrogen And The First 30 Elements, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present analytic fits to charge exchange rate coefficients over the full range of temperatures which occurs in photoionized or shock-heated plasmas. We consider reactions between neutral hydrogen and all elements with parent ion charge q = 1-4 up to Z = 30. Many rates were obtained from various sources in the literature. For reactions for which no data were available, we calculated rates using the Landau-Zener formalism. For these new reactions, we tabulate both total and state-specific rate coefficients. Ml are fitted with a consistent, accurate formula. These fits may be incorporated easily into spectral synthesis codes, and we …

Atomic Data For Astrophysics. Ii. New Analytic Fits For Photoionization Cross Sections Of Atoms And Ions, D. A. Verner, Gary J. Ferland, K. T. Korista, D. G. Yakovlev
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present a complete set of analytic fits to the nonrelativistic photoionization cross sections for the ground states of atoms and ions of elements from H through Si, and S, Ar, Ca, and Fe. Near the ionization thresholds, the fits are based on the Opacity Project theoretical cross sections interpolated and smoothed over resonances. At higher energies, the fits reproduce calculated Hartree-Dirac-Slater photoionization cross sections.

Intercomparison of the spectra of seven high-luminosity quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) shows that there is a gradation of properties in their broad emission-line regions (BELRs) that can be understood as differing mixtures of different gas components. Six of these seven objects have unusually narrow BELR profiles, which greatly facilitates the disentangling of blends and measuring of weak lines. In the QSO 0207 - 398, the BELR is made up of at least three kinematically distinct components; its spectrum is in fact a composite of the spectra of the more homogeneous BELRs in the QSOs at either end of our sequence of …

The Chemical Enrichment Of Gas In Broad Absorption Line Qsos: Rapid Star Formation In The Early History Of Galaxies, Kirk Korista, Fred Hamann, Jason W. Ferguson, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Utilizing spectra from ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope observations, Korista et al. identified at least 12 broad absorption lines in the broad absorption line (BAL) QSO 0226-1024 (zem = 2.256), many for the first time. In the present paper we use seven of their measured column densities to investigate the BAL gas ionization equilibrium and metallicity. We assume that the metal abundances follow the rapid star formation (RSF) models of Hamann & Ferland or are simply scaled from solar ratios to (1) limit the free parameters in constraining the overall metallicity and (2) test the applicability of such a …

High Metal Enrichments In Luminous Quasars, Gary J. Ferland, Jack A. Baldwin, Kirk T. Korista, Fred Hamann, R. F. Carswell, Mark Phillips, Belinda J. Wilkes, Robert E. Williams
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We discuss observations of the broad emission line in luminous intermediate redshift quasars, with emphasis on Q0207 -398. This object has relatively sharp lines, allowing us to deconvolve the profiles into distinct components. In this paper we examine the high ionization region, which we show must be matter-bounded, partially transparent to ionizing radiation. We measure a large N V λ1240/He II λ1640 ratio in Q0207-398, but detailed calculations predict this ratio to be ~1 for standard cloud properties. We show that no choice of incident continuum, ionizing photon flux, density, or even the appeal to nonradiative energy sources, can reproduce …

We present new calculations and analytic fits to the rates of radiative recombination towards H-like, He-like, Li-like and Na-like ions of all elements from H through Zn (Z=30). The fits are valid over a wide range of temperature, from 3 K to 109 K.
Polarization Of Astronomical Maser Radiation. Iii. Arbitrary Zeeman Splitting And Anisotropic Pumping, Moshe Elitzur
Polarization Of Astronomical Maser Radiation. Iii. Arbitrary Zeeman Splitting And Anisotropic Pumping, Moshe Elitzur
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
General solutions of the maser polarization problem are presented for arbitrary absorption coefficients. The results are used to calculate polarization for masers permeated by magnetic fields with arbitrary values of χB, the ratio of Zeeman splitting to Doppler linewidth, and for anisotropic (m-dependent) pumping. In the case of magnetic fields, one solution describes the polarization for overlapping Zeeman components, χB < 1. The χB → 0 limit of this solution reproduces the linear polarization derived in previous studies, which were always conducted at this unphysical limit. Terms of higher order in χB have a negligible effect on …

Rotational Periods And Starspot Activity Of Young Solar-Type Dwarfs In The Open Cluster Ic 4665, S. Allain, C. Prosser, Laurence A. Marschall, Bentley D. Laaksonen
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present the results of a V-band photometric monitoring survey of 15 late-type dwarfs in the young open cluster IC 4665. Low-amplitude periodic light variations are found for 8 stars and ascribed to the modulation by starspots that cover typically a few percent of the stellar disk. Periods range from 0.6 to 3.7d, translating to equatorial velocities between 13 and 93 km.s-1. That no period longer than 4d was detected suggests a relative paucity of extremely slow rotators (Veq << 10 km.s-1) among late-type dwarfs in IC 4665. The fractional number of slow rotators in IC 4665 is similar to that of Alpha Per cluster, suggesting that IC 4665 is close in age to Alpha Per (~50 Myr).

Theoretical Hei Line Intensities In Gaseous Nebulae: Ngc 1976, 6572 And Ic 4997, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland

Smits has recently calculated theoretical He I intensities for a large number of lines for conditions appropriate to gaseous nebulae. These are likely to remain the definitive calculations for some time to come. A comparison of these line ratios with observed values in three nebulae reveals some discrepancies. We show that these discrepancies are reduced when collisional effects from the metastable 23S level are included, and that it is not necessary to invoke an unknown depopulation mechanism for the He I23S level.

Locally Optimally Emitting Clouds And The Origin Of Quasar Emission Lines, Jack Baldwin, Gary J. Ferland, Kirk Korista, Dima Verner
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The similarity of quasar line spectra has been taken as an indication that the emission line clouds have preferred parameters, suggesting that the environment is subject to a fine-tuning process. We show here that the observed spectrum is a natural consequence of powerful selection effects. We computed a large grid of photoionization models covering the widest possible range of cloud gas density and distance from the central continuum source. For each line only a narrow range of density and distance from the continuum source results in maximum reprocessing efficiency, corresponding to "locally optimally emitting clouds" (LOCs). These parameters depend on …

Broad Ne Viii Λ744 Emission From The Quasar Pg 1148+549, Fred Hamann, Joseph C. Shields, Gary J. Ferland, Kirk T. Korista
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We discuss the probable detection of broad Ne VIII λ774 emission from the zɛ = 0.978 quasar PG 1148+549, and we use spectral synthesis calculations to study the physical conditions in the line-forming gas. The theoretical predictions and the measured line wavelength both support Ne VIII λ774 as the most likely identification.
Our calculations show that Ne VIII λ774 forms in hotter and more highly ionized gas than previously recognized in the broad emission line region. If the gas is photoionized by a standard active galactic nucleus continuum, the observed Ne VIII equivalent width, the Ne VIII/O VI flux …

The spatial and radial velocity distribution of broad-line-emitting gas in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 is examined through the process of reverberation mapping, which is done by detailed comparison of continuum and emission-line variations. Recent spectroscopic monitoring of NGC 5548 with HST and IUE allows us to resolve the "transfer function" (TF) that relates the continuum and emission-line variability. We also examine the radial velocity-resolved TFs, and confirm that predominantly radial motions of the line-emitting clouds can be excluded. We find that a broad-line region comprised of clouds that are orbiting a central source of mass ~108 M …
Temperature Fluctuations In Photoionized Nebulae, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland
Temperature Fluctuations In Photoionized Nebulae, J. B. Kingdon, Gary J. Ferland
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
Recombination lines in gaseous nebulae frequently yield parent-ion abundances that are several times larger than abundances derived from forbidden lines. One possible explanation for this discrepancy is the presence of temperature fluctuations. We examine temperature fluctuations in model nebulae by utilizing Peimbert's t2 parameter. We have run large grids of models, varying the stellar temperature and the total hydrogen density. We consider two abundance sets: The first uses "typical" planetary nebulae abundances, while the second examines the effect of increasing the metals and grains by a factor of 3. We also consider both a constant density distribution and one …

The problem of creating synoptic maps from asynoptically gathered trace gas data has prompted the development of a number of schemes. Most notable among these schemes are the Kalman filter, the Salby-Fourier technique, and constituent reconstruction. This paper explores a new technique called "trajectory mapping." Trajectory mapping creates synoptic maps from asynoptically gathered data by advecting measurements backward or forward in time using analyzed wind fields. A significant portion of this work is devoted to an analysis of errors in synoptic trajectory maps associated with the calculation of individual parcel trajectories. In particular, we have considered (1) calculational errors; (2) …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We have used the first Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph spectra of our sample of radio- loud quasars, and quasi-simultaneous ground-based spectrophotometry, to investigate the intensity ratio Lyα/Hβ, whose small observed values are one of the outstanding problems of active galactic nuclei research. The present sample of 20 quasars with complete flux and profile data shows the first significant correlations of this ratio with other observed properties. The strongest correlations are with various continuum slope indicators: we find smaller Lyα/Hβ ratios in quasars whose continua rise more steeply into the red. The …

Here we present spectrophotometric data of high signal-to-noise ratio (≳20 in the continuum) of the first 31 radio-loud quasars, over the wavelength range from below Lyα to an observed wavelength of 3250 or 4800 Å, obtained using the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. We have also made quasi-simultaneous observations to extend these spectra beyond the Balmer lines -- either Hβ or Hα -- …

Infrared Emission And Dynamics Of Outlfows In Late-Type Stars, Željko Ivezić, Moshe Elitzur
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
The dynamical structure and infrared emission of winds around late-type stars are studied in a self-consistent model that couples the equations of motion and radiative transfer. Thanks to its scaling properties, both the dynamics and IR spectrum of the solution are fully characterized by τF, the flux-averaged optical depth of the wind. Five types of dust grains are considered: astronomical silicate, crystalline olivine, graphite, amorphous carbon and SiC, as well as mixtures. Analysis of infrared signatures provides constraints on the grain chemical composition and indications for the simultaneous existence of silicate and carbon grains. The abundances of crystalline …

We present optical photometry for the type Ia SN 1994D in NGC 4526 from 1994 March 7 to June 4 starting 13 days before B-band maximum. The light curves of this SN resemble closely those of the "normal" type Ia events SNe 1989B and 1980N, differing only in a slightly faster decline after maximum in VRI. The optical absolute magnitudes of SN 1994D, however, are significantly brighter than those of its near twins, and brighter than those predicted by Phillips' [ApJ, 413, L105 (1993)] relationship between decline rate and luminosity. Our small amount of IR photometry of SN 1994D …
