Charged lepton flavor violation is forbidden in the Standard Model but possible in several new physics scenarios. In many of these models, the radiative decays τ± → ℓ±γ (ℓ = e, μ) are predicted to have a sizeable probability, making them particularly interesting channels to search at various experiments. An updated search via τ± → ℓ±γ using full data of the Belle experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 988 fb−1, is reported for charged lepton flavor violation. No significant excess over background predictions from the Standard Model is observed, and the upper limits on the branching fractions, B(τ± → …

Model-independent description of nonleptonic decays of charmed mesons is a challenging task due to large nonperturbative effects of strong interactions on the transition amplitudes. We discuss the equivalence of two different flavor-SU(3)-based descriptions of Cabibbo-favored non-leptonic decays of charmed mesons to two-pseudoscalars final states including the η and η′ mesons.

Using data samples of 89.5 and 711 fb-1 recorded at energies of s=10.52 and 10.58 GeV, respectively, with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider, we report measurements of branching fractions of semileptonic decays Ξc0→Ξ-ℓ+νℓ (ℓ=e or μ) and the CP-asymmetry parameter of Ξc0→Ξ-π+ decay. The branching fractions are measured to be B(Ξc0→Ξ-e+νe)=(1.31±0.04±0.07±0.38)% and B(Ξc0→Ξ-μ+νμ)=(1.27±0.06±0.10±0.37)%, and the decay parameter αΞπ is measured to be 0.63±0.03±0.01 with much improved precision compared with the current world average. The corresponding ratio B(Ξc0→Ξ-e+νe)/B(Ξc0→Ξ-μ+νμ) is 1.03±0.05±0.07, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton flavor universality. The first measured asymmetry parameter ACP=(αΞ-π++αΞ¯+π-)/(αΞ-π+-αΞ¯+π-)=0.024±0.052±0.014 is found …

Using 980 fb-1 of data collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, we report the measurements of the masses, and the first measurements of the instrinsic widths, of the ςc(2455)+ and ςc(2520)+ charmed baryons. We find M(ςc(2455)+)-M(Λc+)=166.17±0.05-0.07+0.16 MeV/c2, Γ(ςc(2455)+)=2.3±0.3±0.3 MeV/c2, M(ςc(2520)+)-M(Λc+)=230.9±0.5-0.1+0.5 MeV/c2, and Γ(ςc(2520)+)=17.2-2.1-0.7+2.3+3.1 MeV/c2, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. These measurements can be used to test models of the underlying quark structure of the ςc states.

We measure the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D0 → π+π−η, D0 → K+K−η, and D0 → ϕη, using 980 fb−1 of data from the Belle experiment at the KEKB e+e− collider. We obtainB(D0→π+π−η)=[1.22±0.02(stat)±0.02(syst)±0.03(Bref)]×10−3,B(D0→K+K−η)=[1.80−0.06+0.07(stat)±0.04(syst)±0.05(Bref)]×10−4,B(D0→ϕη)=[1.84±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)±0.05(Bref)]×10−4, where the third uncertainty (Bref) is from the uncertainty in the branching fraction of the reference mode D0 → K−π+η. The color-suppressed decay D0 → ϕη is observed for the first time, with very high significance. The results for the CP asymmetries areACP(D0π+π−η)=[0.9±1.2(stat)±0.5(syst)]%,ACP(D0→K+K−η)=[−1.4±3.3(stat)±1.1(syst)]%,ACP(D0→ϕη)=[−1.9±4.4(stat)±0.6(syst)]%. The results for D0 → π+π−η are a significant improvement over previous results. The branching fraction and ACP …

We offer a new solution to an old puzzle in the penguin-dominated B→πK decays. The puzzle is the inconsistency among the measurements of the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of the four B→πK decays: B+→π+K0, B+→π0K+, Bd0→π-K+, Bd0→π0K0. We solve the B→πK puzzle by considering the effect of an axionlike particle (ALP) that mixes with the π0 and has mass close to the π0 mass. We show that the ALP can also explain the anomalies in the electron and muon anomalous magnetic moments.

Instrumental and environmental transient noise bursts in gravitational-wave (GW) detectors, or glitches, may impair astrophysical observations by adversely affecting the sky localization and the parameter estimation of GW signals. Denoising of detector data is especially relevant during low-latency operations because electromagnetic follow-up of candidate detections requires accurate, rapid sky localization and inference of astrophysical sources. NNETFIX is a machine learning, artificial neural network-based algorithm designed to estimate the data containing a transient GW signal with an overlapping glitch as though the glitch was absent. The sky localization calculated from the denoised data may be significantly more accurate than the sky …

Temporal And Spatial Variations In Three-Dimensional Seismic Oceanography, Zheguang Zou, Parsa Bakhtiari Rad, Leonardo Macelloni, Likun Zhang

Faculty and Student Publications

Seismic oceanography is a new cross-discipline between geophysics and oceanography that uses seismic reflection data to image and study the oceanic water column. Previous work on seismic oceanography was largely limited to two-dimensional (2D) seismic data and methods. Here we explore and quantify temporal and spatial variations in three-dimensional (3D) seismic oceanography to address whether 3D seismic imaging is meaningful in all directions and how one can take advantage of the variations. From a 3D multichannel seismic survey acquired for oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico over a 6-month period, a 3D oceanic seismic volume was derived. …

Ultra-High Speed Video Observations Of Intracloud Lightning Flash Initiation, Maribeth Stolzenburg, Thomas C. Marshall, Sampath Bandara, Brian Hurley, Raymond Siedlecki

Faculty and Student Publications

This study describes results from video observations of five intracloud flashes located ≤ 20 km from the camera and recorded with 6.1 µs exposure time and 6.66 µs frame intervals. Video data are supported with electric field change (E-change) and VHF measurements, with emphasis on the flash initiating event (IE) and initial breakdown (IB) stage. In four of the five flashes, the IE is accompanied by weak luminosity, ≤ 5% above background, lasting for 300–500 µs. Two of these four IEs were positive Narrow Bipolar Events (NBEs) with VHF powers of 43 and 990 W; these are the first (known) …

We present measurements of partial branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B→Xuℓ+νℓ decays using the full Belle dataset of 711 fb-1 of integrated luminosity at the ϒ(4S) resonance and for ℓ=e, μ. Inclusive semileptonic B→Xuℓ+νℓ decays are Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) suppressed and measurements are complicated by the large background from CKM favored B→Xcℓ+νℓ transitions, which have a similar signature. Using machine learning techniques, we reduce this and other backgrounds effectively, while retaining access to a large fraction of the B→Xuℓ+νℓ phase space and high signal efficiency. We measure partial branching fractions in three phase-space regions covering about 31% to 86% of the …

We present an analysis of the exclusive B+→π+π-ℓ+νℓ decay, where ℓ represents an electron or a muon, with the assumption of charge-conjugation symmetry and lepton universality. The study exploits the full ϒ(4S) data sample collected by the Belle detector, corresponding to 711 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Events are selected by fully reconstructing one B meson in hadronic decay modes, subsequently determining the properties of the other B meson. We extract the signal yields using a binned maximum-likelihood fit to the missing-mass squared distribution in bins of the invariant mass of the two pions or the momentum transfer squared. We measure …

We report the first measurement of the exclusive cross sections e+e− → BB¯ , e+e− → BB¯ ∗, and e+e− → B∗B¯ ∗ in the energy range from 10.63 GeV to 11.02 GeV. The B mesons are fully reconstructed in a large number of hadronic final states and the three channels are identified using a beam-constrained-mass variable. The shapes of the exclusive cross sections show oscillatory behavior with several maxima and minima. The results are obtained using data collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

We report results from a study of the spin and parity of Ξc(2970)+ using a 980 fb-1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The decay angle distributions in the chain Ξc(2970)+→Ξc(2645)0π+→Ξc+π-π+ are analyzed to determine the spin of this charmed-strange baryon. The angular distributions strongly favor the Ξc(2970)+ spin J=1/2 over 3/2 or 5/2, under an assumption that the lowest partial wave dominates in the decay. We also measure the ratio of Ξc(2970)+ decay branching fractions R=B[Ξc(2970)+→Ξc(2645)0π+]/B[Ξc(2970)+→Ξc′0π+]=1.67±0.29(stat)-0.09+0.15(syst)±0.25(IS), where the last uncertainty is due to possible isospin-symmetry-breaking effects. Using the entire data sample of 980 fb-1 integrated luminosity collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider, we present an amplitude analysis measuring the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-allowed, W-exchange resonant decay Ξc0→Ξ0φ(→K+K-) with a polarized φ and the nonresonant decay via a direct process Ξc0→Ξ0K+K-. We present these measurements, relative to the normalization mode Ξ-π+, and find branching ratios B(Ξc0→Ξ0φ(→K+K-))(BΞc0→Ξ-π+)=0.036±0.004(stat.)±0.002(syst.) and B(Ξc0→Ξ0K+K-)B(Ξc0→Ξ-π+)=0.039±0.004(stat.)±0.002(syst.), which suggest that only minor cusping peaks occur in the combinatorial background of ω∗-→Ξ0K- due to these Ξc0 decays.

We report measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries for Ds+→K+η, Ds+→K+π0, and Ds+→π+η decays, and the branching fraction for Ds+→π+π0. Our results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 921 fb-1 collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric-energy collider. Our measurements of CP asymmetries in these decays are the most precise to date; no evidence for CP violation is found.

BMS (Bondi-Metzner-Sachs) group (and its various generalizations) at null infinity has been studied extensively in the literature as the symmetry group of asymptotically flat spacetimes. The intricate relationship between soft theorems and the BMS symmetries has also motivated the definition of such asymptotic symmetries to timelike infinity [M. Campiglia, Null to time-like infinity Green's functions for asymptotic symmetries in Minkowski spacetime, J. High Energy Phys. 11 (2015) 160.]. Although the vector fields that generate the (generalized) BMS algebra at timelike infinity were defined in the literature, the algebra has not been investigated. In this paper. we fill this gap. The Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) augmented with right-handed neutrinos. Building on our previous work, arXiv:2010.12109, we calculate the Yukawa coupling contributions to the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the 11 dimension-six four-fermion SMNEFT operators. We also present the new contributions to the anomalous dimension matrix for the 14 four-fermion SMEFT operators that mix with the SMNEFT operators through the Yukawa couplings of the right-handed neutrinos.

This investigation is focused on groups of Narrow Bipolar Events (NBEs), defined as NBEs that occurred within 10 km horizontally and ±660 ms of a located, large-amplitude NBE from a dataset of positive NBEs that occurred in Mississippi thunderstorms. In two months only 15 groups were found, with a total of 31 positive and 4 negative NBEs. Each group had 2 to 5 NBEs; four groups had both positive and negative polarity NBEs. About half of the NBEs had typical values for range-normalized fast antenna (FA) electric field change magnitudes (4–15 V/m) and typical VHF powers (1000–45,000 W), but 17 …

We report measurements of the branching fractions of singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays Λc+→pη and Λc+→pπ0 using the full Belle data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 980.6 fb-1. The data were collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- asymmetric energy collider. A clear Λc+ signal is seen in the invariant mass distribution of pη. The fitted number of signal events of the Λc+→pη process is 7734±263; from this, we measure the ratio of branching fractions B(Λc+→pη)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=[2.258±0.077(stat)±0.122(syst)]×10-2, from which we infer the branching fraction B(Λc+→pη)=[1.42±0.05(stat)±0.11(syst)]×10-3. In addition, no significant signal for Λc+→pπ0 is found, so an upper limit on …

Gorgonians Are Foundation Species On Sponge-Dominated Mesophotic Coral Reefs In The Caribbean, Marc Slattery, Michael P. Lesser

Faculty and Student Publications

Foundation species (FS) regulate ecological processes within communities often facilitating biodiversity and habitat complexity. Typically FS are dominant structure-forming taxa; but less dominant taxa having disproportionate ecological impacts to the community can also be FS. Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) are deep coral reef (∼30–150 m) communities, often dominated by emergent sponges in the Caribbean Basin. Despite the potential competitive advantage of sponges on MCEs, gorgonians are also common constituents of these reefs. Data from the Bahamas demonstrate increased biodiversity and densities of sponges on mesophotic reefs with gorgonians relative to reefs without these species. Drawing upon fifteen years of field …

We present a search for the dark photon A′ in the B0 → A′A′ decays, where A′ subsequently decays to e+e−, μ+μ−, and π+π−. The search is performed by analyzing 772 × 106BB¯ events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e− energy-asymmetric collider at the ϒ(4S) resonance. No signal is found in the dark photon mass range 0.01 GeV/c2 ≤ mA′ ≤ 2.62 GeV/c2, and we set upper limits of the branching fraction of B0 → A′A′ at the 90% confidence level. The products of branching fractions, ℬ(B0→A′A′)×ℬ(A′→e+e−)2 and ℬ(B0→A′A′)×ℬ(A′→μ+μ−)2, have limits of the order of 10−8 depending …

We report the first evidence for X(3872) production in two-photon interactions by tagging either the electron or the positron in the final state, exploring the highly virtual photon region. The search is performed in e+e-→e+e-J/ψ π+ π-, using 825 fb-1 of data collected by the Belle detector operated at the KEKB e+e-collider. We observe three X(3872) candidates, where the expected background is 0.11±0.10 events, with a significance of 3.2σ. We obtain an estimated value for γB(X(3872)→J/ψ π+ π-) assuming the Q2 dependence predicted by a cc meson model, where-Q2 is the invariant mass squared of the virtual photon. No X(3915)→J/ψ …

Acoustic Orbital Angular Momentum Hall Effect And Realization Using A Metasurface, Xu Dong Fan, Likun Zhang Mar 2021

Acoustic Orbital Angular Momentum Hall Effect And Realization Using A Metasurface, Xu Dong Fan, Likun Zhang

Faculty and Student Publications

Vortex beams with a twisted wavefront possess both intrinsic and extrinsic orbital angular momenta. Their coupling (viz. orbital-orbital coupling) leads to an orbital angular momentum Hall effect previously found in light, providing applications in light manipulation. Here an analogous orbital Hall effect in acoustics is reported via modeling vortex beam propagation in an inhomogeneous medium. A shift of the beam center perpendicular to the inhomogeneous direction is numerically observed to follow a path predicted by ray theory in the weak inhomogeneity approximation where the coupling and conservation of total angular momenta are identified. Experimental observation of the acoustic phenomenon with …

We report branching fraction measurements of four decay modes of the Λc+ baryon, each of which includes an η meson and a Λ baryon in the final state, and all of which are measured relative to the Λc+→pK-π+ decay mode. The results are based on a 980 fb-1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Two decays, Λc+→ης0π+ and Λ(1670)π+, are observed for the first time, while the measurements of the other decay modes, Λc+→ηΛπ+ and ης(1385)+, are more precise than those made previously. We obtain relative branching fractions of B(Λc+→ηΛπ+)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=0.293±0.003±0.014, B(Λc+→ης0π+)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=0.120±0.006±0.010, B(Λc+→Λ(1670)π+)×B(Λ(1670)→ηΛ)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=(5.54±0.29±0.73)×10-2, and …

We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays B → Kμ+μ− and B → Ke+e−, and their ratio (RK), using a data sample of 711 fb−1 that contains 772 × 106BB¯ events. The data were collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e− collider. The ratio RK is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared (q2): q2 ∈ (0.1, 4.0), (4.00, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0), (10.2, 12.8) and (> 14.18) GeV2/c4, along with the whole q2 region. The RK value for q2 ∈ (1.0, 6.0) GeV2/c4 is 1.03−0.24+0.28 ± 0.01. The first and …

We measure the time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0→KS0KS0KS0 decays using 772×106BB¯ pairs collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The obtained mixing-induced and direct CP asymmetries are -0.71±0.23 (stat)±0.05 (syst) and 0.12±0.16 (stat)±0.05 (syst), respectively. These values are consistent with the Standard Model predictions. The significance of CP violation differs from zero by 2.5 standard deviations.

Standard Model Neutrino Effective Field Theory (SMNEFT) is an effective theory with Standard Model (SM) gauge-invariant operators constructed only from SM and right-handed neutrino fields. For the full set of dimension-six SMNEFT operators, we present the gauge coupling terms of the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for renormalization group evolution (RGE) of the Wilson coefficients between a new physics scale and the electroweak scale. We find that the SMNEFT operators can be divided into five subsets which are closed under RGE. Our results apply for both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We also discuss the operator mixing pattern numerically and comment on …
