Higgs Shifts From Electron–Positron Annihilations Near Neutron Stars, Gary A. Wegner, Roberto Onofrio Jul 2015

Higgs Shifts From Electron–Positron Annihilations Near Neutron Stars, Gary A. Wegner, Roberto Onofrio

Dartmouth Scholarship

We discuss the potential for using neutron stars to determine bounds on the Higgs-Kretschmann coupling by looking at peculiar shifts in gamma-ray spectroscopic features. In particular, we reanalyze multiple lines observed in GRB781119 detected by two gamma-ray spectrometers, and derive an upper bound on the Higgs-Kretschmann coupling that is much more constraining than the one recently obtained from white dwarfs. This calls for targeted analyses of spectra of gamma-ray bursts from more recent observatories, dedicated searches for differential shifts on electron–positron and proton–antiproton annihilation spectra in proximity of compact sources, and signals of electron and proton cyclotron lines from the …

Star Formation And Relaxation In 379 Nearby Galaxy Clusters, Seth A. Cohen, Ryan C. Hickox, Gary A. Wegner Jun 2015

Star Formation And Relaxation In 379 Nearby Galaxy Clusters, Seth A. Cohen, Ryan C. Hickox, Gary A. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the relationship between star formation (SF) and level of relaxation in a sample of 379 galaxy clusters at z < 0.2. We use data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to measure cluster membership and level of relaxation, and to select star-forming galaxies based on mid-infrared emission detected with the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer. For galaxies with absolute magnitudes Mr < −19.5, we find an inverse correlation between SF fraction and cluster relaxation: as a cluster becomes less relaxed, its SF fraction increases. Furthermore, in general, the subtracted SF fraction in all unrelaxed clusters (0.117 ± 0.003) is higher than that in all relaxed clusters (0.097 ± 0.005). We verify the validity of our SF calculation methods and membership criteria through analysis of previous work. Our results agree with previous findings that a weak correlation exists between cluster SF and dynamical state, possibly because unrelaxed clusters are less evolved relative to relaxed clusters.

Variable Hard-X-Ray Emission From The Candidate Accreting Black Hole In Dwarf Galaxy Henize 2–10, Thomas J. Whalen, Ryan C. Hickox, Amy E. Reines, Jenny E. Greene Jun 2015

Variable Hard-X-Ray Emission From The Candidate Accreting Black Hole In Dwarf Galaxy Henize 2–10, Thomas J. Whalen, Ryan C. Hickox, Amy E. Reines, Jenny E. Greene

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present an analysis of the X-ray spectrum and long-term variability of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy Henize 2–10. Recent observations suggest that this galaxy hosts an actively accreting black hole (BH) with mass ~106 . The presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) in a low-mass starburst galaxy marks a new environment for AGNs, with implications for the processes by which "seed" BHs may form in the early universe. In this paper, we analyze four epochs of X-ray observations of Henize 2–10, to characterize the long-term behavior of its hard nuclear emission. We analyze observations with Chandra from …

Gps Phase Scintillation At High Latitudes During Geomagnetic Storms Of 7–17 March 2012 – Part 1: The North American Sector, P. Prikryl, R. Ghoddousi-Fard, E. G. Thomas, J. M. Ruohoniemi, S. G. Shepherd Jun 2015

Gps Phase Scintillation At High Latitudes During Geomagnetic Storms Of 7–17 March 2012 – Part 1: The North American Sector, P. Prikryl, R. Ghoddousi-Fard, E. G. Thomas, J. M. Ruohoniemi, S. G. Shepherd

Dartmouth Scholarship

During the ascending phase of solar cycle 24, a series of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) in the period 7–17 March 2012 caused geomagnetic storms that strongly affected high-latitude ionosphere in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. GPS phase scintillation was observed at northern and southern high latitudes by arrays of GPS ionospheric scintillation and TEC monitors (GISTMs) and geodetic-quality GPS receivers sampling at 1 Hz. Mapped as a function of magnetic latitude and magnetic local time, regions of enhanced scintillation are identified in the context of coupling processes between the solar wind and the magnetosphere–ionosphere system. Large southward IMF and …

Chiral Imprint Of A Cosmic Gauge Field On Primordial Gravitational Waves, Jannis Bielefeld, Robert R. Caldwell Jun 2015

Chiral Imprint Of A Cosmic Gauge Field On Primordial Gravitational Waves, Jannis Bielefeld, Robert R. Caldwell

Dartmouth Scholarship

A cosmological gauge field with isotropic stress-energy introduces parity violation into the behavior of gravitational waves. We show that a primordial spectrum of inflationary gravitational waves develops a preferred handedness, left or right circularly polarized, depending on the abundance and coupling of the gauge field during the radiation era. A modest abundance of the gauge field would induce parity-violating correlations of the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization patterns that could be detected by current and future experiments.

Galaxy Pairs In The Sloan Digital Sky Survey - Xii. The Fuelling Mechanism Of Low-Excitation Radio-Loud Agn, Sara L. Ellison, David R. Patton, Ryan C. Hickox May 2015

Galaxy Pairs In The Sloan Digital Sky Survey - Xii. The Fuelling Mechanism Of Low-Excitation Radio-Loud Agn, Sara L. Ellison, David R. Patton, Ryan C. Hickox

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate whether the fuelling of low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) is linked to major galaxy interactions. Our study utilizes a sample of 10 800 spectroscopic galaxy pairs and 97 post-mergers selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with matches to multiwavelength data sets. The LERG fraction amongst interacting galaxies is a factor of 3.5 higher than that of a control sample matched in local galaxy density, redshift and stellar mass. However, the LERG excess in pairs does not depend on projected separation and remains elevated out to at least 500 h70−1" role="presentation">h−170

kpc, suggesting that major mergers are not …

Fermi-Bounce Cosmology And The Fermion Curvaton Mechanism, Stephon Alexander, Yi-Fu Cai, Antonino Marcianò May 2015

Fermi-Bounce Cosmology And The Fermion Curvaton Mechanism, Stephon Alexander, Yi-Fu Cai, Antonino Marcianò

Dartmouth Scholarship

A nonsingular bouncing cosmology can be achieved by introducing a fermion field with BCS condensation occurring at high energy scales. In this paper we are able to dilute the anisotropic stress near the bounce by means of releasing the gap energy density near the phase transition between the radiation and condensate states. In order to explain the nearly scale-invariant CMB spectrum, another fermion field is required. We investigate one possible curvaton mechanism by involving one another fermion field without condensation where the mass is lighter than the background field. We show that, by virtue of the fermion curvaton mechanism, our …

The 2d Distribution Of Iron-Rich Ejecta In The Remnant Of Sn 1885 In M31, Robert A. Fesen, Peter A. Höflich, Andrew J. S. Hamilton May 2015

The 2d Distribution Of Iron-Rich Ejecta In The Remnant Of Sn 1885 In M31, Robert A. Fesen, Peter A. Höflich, Andrew J. S. Hamilton

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet Fe i and Fe ii images of the remnant of Supernova 1885 (S And) which is observed in absorption against the bulge of the Andromeda galaxy, M31. We compare these Fe i and Fe ii absorption line images to previous HST absorption images of S And, of which the highest quality and theoretically cleanest is Ca ii H and K. Because the remnant is still in free expansion, these images provide a 2D look at the distribution of iron synthesized in this probable Type Ia explosion, thus providing insights and constraints …

Gravitational-Wave Mediated Preheating, Stephon Alexander, Sam Cormack, Antonino Marcianò, Nicolás Yunes Apr 2015

Gravitational-Wave Mediated Preheating, Stephon Alexander, Sam Cormack, Antonino Marcianò, Nicolás Yunes

Dartmouth Scholarship

We propose a new preheating mechanism through the coupling of the gravitational field to both the inflaton and matter fields, without direct inflaton–matter couplings. The inflaton transfers power to the matter fields through interactions with gravitational waves, which are exponentially enhanced due to an inflation–graviton coupling. One such coupling is the product of the inflaton to the Pontryagin density, as in dynamical Chern–Simons gravity. The energy scales involved are constrained by requiring that preheating happens fast during matter domination.

Ultracool White Dwarfs And The Age Of The Galactic Disc, A. Gianninas, B. Curd, John R. Thorstensen, Mukremin Kilic Mar 2015

Ultracool White Dwarfs And The Age Of The Galactic Disc, A. Gianninas, B. Curd, John R. Thorstensen, Mukremin Kilic

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present parallax observations and a detailed model atmosphere analysis of 54 cool and ultracool (Teff < 4000 K) white dwarfs (WDs) in the solar neighbourhood. For the first time, a large number of cool and ultracool WDs have distance and tangential velocities measurements available. Our targets have distances ranging from 21 pc to >100 pc, and include five stars within 30 pc. Contrary to expectations, all but two of them have tangential velocities smaller than 150 km s−1 thus suggesting Galactic disc membership. The oldest WDs in this sample have WD cooling ages of 10 Gyr, providing a firm lower limit to the age of the thick disc population. Many of our targets have uncharacteristically large radii, indicating that they are low mass WDs. It appears that we have detected the brighter population of cool and ultracool …

A Connection Between Obscuration And Star Formation In Luminous Quasars, Chien-Ting J. Chen, Ryan C. Hickox, Stacey Alberts, Chris M. Harrison Mar 2015

A Connection Between Obscuration And Star Formation In Luminous Quasars, Chien-Ting J. Chen, Ryan C. Hickox, Stacey Alberts, Chris M. Harrison

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a measurement of the star formation properties of a uniform sample of mid-IR selected, unobscured and obscured quasars (QSO1s and QSO2s) in the Bo\"otes survey region. We use an spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis for photometric data spanning optical to far-IR wavelengths to decompose AGN and host galaxy components. We find that when compared to a matched sample of QSO1s, the QSO2s have higher far-IR detection fractions, far-IR fluxes and infrared star formation luminosities (LSFIR) by a factor of ∼2. Correspondingly, we show that the AGN obscured fraction rises from 0.3 to 0.7 between 4−40×10 …

Spectroscopic Orbital Periods For 29 Cataclysmic Variables From The Sloan Digital Sky Survey, John R. Thorstensen, Cynthia J. Taylor, Christopher S. Peters, Julie N. Skinner Mar 2015

Spectroscopic Orbital Periods For 29 Cataclysmic Variables From The Sloan Digital Sky Survey, John R. Thorstensen, Cynthia J. Taylor, Christopher S. Peters, Julie N. Skinner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report follow-up spectroscopy of 29 cataclysmic variables from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), 22 of which were discovered by SDSS and seven of which are previously known systems that were recovered in SDSS. The periods for 16 of these objects were included in the tabulation by Gänsicke et al. While most of the systems have periods less than 2 hr, only one has a period in the 80–86 minutes "spike" found by Gänsicke et al., and 11 have periods longer than 3 hr, indicating that the present sample is skewed toward longer-period, higher-luminosity objects. Seven of the objects …

Spectroscopic Confirmation Of An Ultramassive And Compact Galaxy At Z = 3.35: A Detailed Look At An Early Progenitor Of Local Giant Ellipticals, Z. Cemile Marsan, Danilo Marchesini, Gabriel B. Brammer, Mauro Stefanon, Adam Muzzin, Alberto Fernández-Soto, Stefan Geier, Kevin N. Hainline Mar 2015

Spectroscopic Confirmation Of An Ultramassive And Compact Galaxy At Z = 3.35: A Detailed Look At An Early Progenitor Of Local Giant Ellipticals, Z. Cemile Marsan, Danilo Marchesini, Gabriel B. Brammer, Mauro Stefanon, Adam Muzzin, Alberto Fernández-Soto, Stefan Geier, Kevin N. Hainline

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the first spectroscopic confirmation of an ultra-massive galaxy at redshift z>3 using data from Keck-NIRSPEC, VLT-Xshooter, and GTC-Osiris. We detect strong [OIII] and Lyα emission, and weak [OII], CIV, and HeII, placing C1-23152 at a spectroscopic redshift of zspec=3.351. The modeling of the emission-line corrected spectral energy distribution results in a best-fit stellar mass of M∗=3.1+0.6−0.7×1011M⊙, a star-formation rate of <7 M⊙yr−1, and negligible dust extinction. The stars appear to have formed in a short intense burst ~300-500 Myr prior to the observation epoch, setting the formation redshift of this galaxy at z~4.1. From the analysis of the line ratios and widths, and the observed flux at 24μm, we confirm the presence of a luminous hidden active galactic nucleus (AGN), with bolometric luminosity of ~1046ergs−1. Potential contamination to the observed SED from the AGN continuum is constrained, placing a lower limit on the stellar mass of 2×1011M⊙. HST/WFC3 H160 and ACS I814 images are modeled, resulting in an effective radius of re~1 kpc in the H160 band and a Sersic index n~4.4. This object may be a prototype of the progenitors of local most massive elliptical galaxies in the first 2 Gyr of cosmic history, having formed most of its stars at z>4 in a highly dissipative, intense, and short burst of star formation. C1-23152 is completing its transition to a post-starburst phase while hosting a powerful AGN, potentially responsible for the quenching of the star formation activity.

Revisiting Ulysses Observations Of Interstellar Helium, Brian E. Wood, Hans-Reinhard Müller, Manfred Witte Mar 2015

Revisiting Ulysses Observations Of Interstellar Helium, Brian E. Wood, Hans-Reinhard Müller, Manfred Witte

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report the results of a comprehensive reanalysis of Ulysses observations of interstellar He atoms flowing through the solar system, the goal being to reassess the interstellar He flow vector and to search for evidence of variability in this vector. We find no evidence that the He beam seen by Ulysses changes at all from 1994-2007. The direction of flow changes by no more than ~03 and the speed by no more than ~0.3 km s–1. A global fit to all acceptable He beam maps from 1994-2007 yields the following He flow parameters: V ISM = 26.08 ± …

Dual-Spacecraft Reconstruction Of A Three-Dimensional Magnetic Flux Rope At The Earth's Magnetopause, H. Hasegawa, B. U. Ö. Sonnerup, S. Eriksson, T. K. M. Nakamura Feb 2015

Dual-Spacecraft Reconstruction Of A Three-Dimensional Magnetic Flux Rope At The Earth's Magnetopause, H. Hasegawa, B. U. Ö. Sonnerup, S. Eriksson, T. K. M. Nakamura

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the first results of a data analysis method, developed by Sonnerup and Hasegawa (2011), for reconstructing three-dimensional (3-D), magnetohydrostatic structures from data taken as two closely spaced satellites traverse the structures. The method is applied to a magnetic flux transfer event (FTE), which was encountered on 27 June 2007 by at least three (TH-C, TH-D, and TH-E) of the five THEMIS probes near the subsolar magnetopause. The FTE was sandwiched between two oppositely directed reconnection jets under a southward interplanetary magnetic field condition, consistent with its generation by multiple X-line reconnection. The recovered 3-D field indicates that a …

The Broad-Lined Type Ic Sn 2012ap And The Nature Of Relativistic Supernovae Lacking A Gamma-Ray Burst Detection, D. Milisavljevic, R. Margutti, J. T. Parrent, A. M. Soderberg, R. A. Fesen Jan 2015

The Broad-Lined Type Ic Sn 2012ap And The Nature Of Relativistic Supernovae Lacking A Gamma-Ray Burst Detection, D. Milisavljevic, R. Margutti, J. T. Parrent, A. M. Soderberg, R. A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared observations of SN 2012ap, a broad-lined Type Ic supernova in the galaxy NGC 1729 that produced a relativistic and rapidly decelerating outflow without a gamma-ray burst signature. Photometry and spectroscopy follow the flux evolution from –13 to +272 days past the B-band maximum of –17.4 ± 0.5 mag. The spectra are dominated by Fe II, O I, and Ca II absorption lines at ejecta velocities of v ≈ 20,000 km s–1 that change slowly over time. Other spectral absorption lines are consistent with contributions from photospheric He I, and hydrogen may also …

The Double Galaxy Cluster Abell 2465 – Ii. Star Formation In The Cluster, Gary A. Wegner, Devin S. Chu, Ho Seong Hwang Dec 2014

The Double Galaxy Cluster Abell 2465 – Ii. Star Formation In The Cluster, Gary A. Wegner, Devin S. Chu, Ho Seong Hwang

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the star formation rate and its location in the major merger cluster Abell 2465 at z = 0.245. Optical properties of the cluster are described in Paper I. Measurements of the Hα and infrared dust emission of galaxies in the cluster were made with an interference filter centred on the redshifted line at a wavelength of 817 nm and utilized data from the WISE satellite 12 μm band. Imaging in the Johnson U and B bands was obtained, and along with SDSS u and r was used to study the blue fraction, which appears enhanced, as a further …

A 3d Kinematic Study Of The Northern Ejecta 'Jet' Of The Crab Nebula, Christine S. Black, Robert A. Fesen Dec 2014

A 3d Kinematic Study Of The Northern Ejecta 'Jet' Of The Crab Nebula, Christine S. Black, Robert A. Fesen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present [O III] 4959,5007 emission line spectra (FWHM = 40 km/s) of the Crab Nebula's northern ejecta `jet'. These data, along with a recent [O III] image of the Crab, are used to build 3-dimensional models of the jet and adjacent remnant nebulosity to better understand the jet's properties and possible formation. We find that the jet's radial velocities range from -190 to +480 km/s with transverse velocities from 1600 to 2650 km/s from base to tip. The jet appears virtually hollow in [O III] emission with the exception of some material at the jet's base where the it …

Cataclysmic Variables In The Superblink Proper Motion Survey, Julie N. Skinner, John R. Thorstensen, Sébastien Lépine

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have discovered a new high proper motion cataclysmic variable (CV) in the SUPERBLINK proper motion survey, which is sensitive to stars with proper motions greater than 40 mas yr−1. This CV was selected for follow-up observations as part of a larger search for CVs selected based on proper motions and their near-UV−V and V−Ks colors. We present spectroscopic observations from the 2.4 m Hiltner Telescope at MDM Observatory. The new CVʼs orbital period is near 96 minutes, its spectrum shows the double-peaked Balmer emission lines characteristic of quiescent dwarf novae, and its V magnitude is …

The First Month Of Evolution Of The Slow-Rising Type Iip Sn 2013ej In M74, S. Valenti, D. Sand, A. Pastorello, M. L. Graham, D. A. Howell, J. T. Parrent Nov 2014

The First Month Of Evolution Of The Slow-Rising Type Iip Sn 2013ej In M74, S. Valenti, D. Sand, A. Pastorello, M. L. Graham, D. A. Howell, J. T. Parrent

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present early photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2013ej, a bright Type IIP supernova (SN) in M74. SN 2013ej is one of the closest SNe ever discovered. The available archive images and the early discovery help to constrain the nature of its progenitor. The earliest detection of this explosion was on 2013 July 24.125 ut and our spectroscopic monitoring with the FLOYDS spectrographs began on July 27.7 ut, continuing almost daily for two weeks. Daily optical photometric monitoring was achieved with the 1 m telescopes of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope (LCOGT) network, and was complemented by UV …

A Spectroscopic Survey Of Wise -Selected Obscured Quasars With The Southern African Large Telescope, Kevin N. Hainline, Ryan C. Hickox, Christopher M. Carroll, Adam D. Myers

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present the results of an optical spectroscopic survey of a sample of 40 candidate obscured quasars identified on the basis of their mid-infrared emission detected by the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Optical spectra for this survey were obtained using the Robert Stobie Spectrograph on the Southern African Large Telescope. Our sample was selected with WISE colors characteristic of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), as well as red optical to mid-IR colors indicating that the optical/UV AGN continuum is obscured by dust. We obtain secure redshifts for the majority of the objects that comprise our sample (35/40), and …

Optical Counterparts Of Two Fermi Millisecond Pulsars: Psr J1301+0833 And Psr J1628–3205, Miao Li, Jules P. Halpern, John R. Thorstensen Oct 2014

Optical Counterparts Of Two Fermi Millisecond Pulsars: Psr J1301+0833 And Psr J1628–3205, Miao Li, Jules P. Halpern, John R. Thorstensen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Using the 1.3 m and 2.4 m Telescopes of the MDM Observatory, we identified the close companions of two eclipsing millisecond radio pulsars that were discovered by the Green Bank Telescope in searches of Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope sources, and measured their light curves. PSR J1301+0833 is a black widow pulsar in a 6.5 hr orbit whose companion star is strongly heated on the side facing the pulsar. It varies from R = 21.8 to R > 24 around the orbit. PSR J1628–3205 is a "redback," a nearly Roche-lobe-filling system in a 5.0 hr orbit whose optical modulation in the range …

Information-Entropic Measure Of Energy-Degenerate Kinks In Two-Field Models, R.A.C. Correa, A. De Souza Dutra, M. Gleiser Oct 2014

Information-Entropic Measure Of Energy-Degenerate Kinks In Two-Field Models, R.A.C. Correa, A. De Souza Dutra, M. Gleiser

Dartmouth Scholarship

We investigate the existence and properties of kink-like solitons in a class of models with two interacting scalar fields. In particular, we focus on models that display both double and single-kink solutions, treatable analytically using the Bogomol'nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield bound (BPS). Such models are of interest in applications that include Skyrmions and various superstring-motivated theories. Exploring a region of parameter space where the energy for very different spatially-bound configurations is degenerate, we show that a newly-proposed momentum–space entropic measure called Configurational Entropy (CE) can distinguish between such energy-degenerate spatial profiles. This information-theoretic measure of spatial complexity provides a complementary perspective to situations …

Revised Age For Cm Draconis And Wd 1633+ 572-Toward A Resolution Of Model-Observation Radius Discrepancies, Gregory A. Feiden, Brian Chaboyer

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report an age revision for the low-mass detached eclipsing binary CM Draconis and its common proper motion companion, WD 1633+572. An age of 8.5 +/- 3.5 Gyr is found by combining an age estimate for the lifetime of WD 1633+572 and an estimate from galactic space motions. The revised age is greater than a factor of two older than previous estimates. Our results provide consistency between the white dwarf age and the system's galactic kinematics, which reveal the system is a highly probable mem

Dark Energy Scaling From Dark Matter To Acceleration, Jannis Bielefeld, Robert R. Caldwell, Eric Linder Aug 2014

Dark Energy Scaling From Dark Matter To Acceleration, Jannis Bielefeld, Robert R. Caldwell, Eric Linder

Dartmouth Scholarship

The dark sector of the Universe need not be completely separable into distinct dark matter and dark energy components. We consider a model of early dark energy in which the dark energy mimics a dark matter component in both evolution and perturbations at early times. Barotropic aether dark energy scales as a fixed fraction, possibly greater than one, of the dark matter density and has vanishing sound speed at early times before undergoing a transition. This gives signatures not only in cosmic expansion but in sound speed and inhomogeneities, and in number of effective neutrino species. Model parameters describe the …

Search For Higgs Shifts In White Dwarfs, Roberto Onofrio, Gary A. Wegner Aug 2014

Search For Higgs Shifts In White Dwarfs, Roberto Onofrio, Gary A. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

We report on a search for differential shifts between electronic and vibronic transitions in carbon-rich white dwarfs BPM 27606 and Procyon B. The absence of differential shifts within the spectral resolution and taking into account systematic effects such as space motion and pressure shifts allows us to set the first upper bound of astrophysical origin on the coupling between the Higgs field and the Kreschmann curvature invariant. Our analysis provides the basis for a more general methodology to derive bounds to the coupling of long-range scalar fields to curvature invariants in an astrophysical setting complementary to the ones available from …

Electron-Ion Equilibrium And Shock Precursors In The Northeast Limb Of The Cygnus Loop, Amber A. Medina, John C. Raymond, Richard J. Edgar, Nelson Caldwell, Robert A. Fesen, Dan Milisavljevic Jul 2014

Electron-Ion Equilibrium And Shock Precursors In The Northeast Limb Of The Cygnus Loop, Amber A. Medina, John C. Raymond, Richard J. Edgar, Nelson Caldwell, Robert A. Fesen, Dan Milisavljevic

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present an observational study using high-resolution echelle spectroscopy of collisionless shocks in the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. Measured Hα line profiles constrain pre-shock heating processes, shock speeds, and electron-ion equilibration (Te /Ti ). The shocks produce faint Hα emission line profiles, which are characterized by narrow and broad components. The narrow component is representative of the pre-shock conditions, while the broad component is produced after charge transfer between neutrals entering the shock and protons in the post-shock gas, thus reflecting the properties of the post-shock gas. We observe a diffuse Hα region extending about 25 …

A Uv To Mid-Ir Study Of Agn Selection, Sun Mi Chung, Christopher S. Kochanek, Roberto Assef, Michael J. I. Brown, Daniel Stern, Buell T. Jannuzi, Anthony H. Gonzalez, Ryan C. Hickox, John Moustakas

Dartmouth Scholarship

We classify the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 431,038 sources in the 9 deg2 Boötes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS). There are up to 17 bands of data available per source, including ultraviolet (GALEX), optical (NDWFS), near-IR (NEWFIRM), and mid-infrared (IRAC and MIPS) data, as well as spectroscopic redshifts for ~20,000 objects, primarily from the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey. We fit galaxy, active galactic nucleus (AGN), stellar, and brown dwarf templates to the observed SEDs, which yield spectral classes for the Galactic sources and photometric redshifts and galaxy/AGN luminosities for the extragalactic sources. …

Early-Type Galaxies In The Chandra Cosmos Survey, F. Civano, G. Fabbiano, S. Pellegrini, D.-W. Kim

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study a sample of 69 X-ray detected early-type galaxies (ETGs), selected from the Chandra COSMOS survey, to explore the relation between the X-ray luminosity of hot gaseous halos (L X, gas) and the integrated stellar luminosity (LK ) of the galaxies, in a range of redshift extending out to z = 1.5. In the local universe, a tight, steep relationship has been established between these two quantities, suggesting the presence of largely virialized halos in X-ray luminous systems. We use well-established relations from the study of local universe ETGs, together with the expected evolution …

Dartmouth Scholarship

We have embedded a voltage-biased Cooper-pair transistor (CPT) in a high-Q superconducting microwave cavity. When the energy given to a tunneling Cooper pair by the voltage bias is equal to a multiple of the cavity photon frequency, the cavity is pumped to a strongly nonequilibrium state. The cavity photons act back on the CPT, allowing us to enter a regime of strongly correlated electronic-photonic transport. We directly observe the effects of photonic backaction on Cooper-pair transport, and see clear evidence for single-emitter lasing in the form of emission dominated by stimulated transport processes.
