Many massive galaxies at the centres of relaxed galaxy clusters and groups have vast reservoirs of warm (∼10 000 K) and cold (≲100 K) gas. In many such low-redshift systems this gas is lifted into the hot interstellar medium in filamentary structures, which are long lived and are typically not forming stars. Two important questions are how far do these reservoirs cool and if cold gas is abundant what is the cause of the low star formation efficiency? Heating and excitation of the filaments from collisions and mixing of hot particles in the surrounding X-ray gas describes well the optical …

The Young Radio Lobe Of 3c 84: Inferred Gas Properties In The Central 10 Pc, Yutaka Fujita, Nozomu Kawakatu, Isaac Shlosman, Hirotaka Ito

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We analyse the environment of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the centre of a massive elliptical galaxy NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster, hosting the radio source 3C 84. We focus on the young radio lobe observed inside the estimated Bondi accretion radius, and discusss the momentum balance between the jet associated with the lobe and the surrounding gas. The results are compared with the proper motion of the radio lobe obtained with the very long baseline interferometry. We find that under assumption of a high-density environment ( ≳ 100 cm−3), the jet power must be comparable …

A Determination Of The Gamma-Ray Flux And Photon Spectral Index Distributions Of Blazars From The Fermi-Lat 3lac, Jack Singal

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a determination of the distributions of gamma-ray photon flux – the so-called LogN–LogS relation – and photon spectral index for blazars, based on the third extragalactic source catalogue of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope's Large Area Telescope, and considering the photon energy range from 100 MeV to 100 GeV. The data set consists of the 774 blazars in the so-called Clean sample detected with a greater than approximately 7σ detection threshold and located above ±20° Galactic latitude. We use non-parametric methods verified in previous works to reconstruct the intrinsic distributions from the observed ones …

Structure Symmetry Determination And Magnetic Evolution In Sr2Ir1−XRhXO4, Feng Ye, Xiaoping Wang, Christina Hoffmann, Jinchen Wang, Songxue Chi, Masaaki Matsuda, Bryan C. Chakoumakos, Jaime A. Fernandez-Baca, Gang Cao Nov 2015

Structure Symmetry Determination And Magnetic Evolution In Sr2Ir1−XRhXO4, Feng Ye, Xiaoping Wang, Christina Hoffmann, Jinchen Wang, Songxue Chi, Masaaki Matsuda, Bryan C. Chakoumakos, Jaime A. Fernandez-Baca, Gang Cao

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We use single-crystal neutron diffraction to determine the crystal structure symmetry and the magnetic evolution in the rhodium-doped iridates Sr2Ir1−xRhxO4 (0≤ x ≤ 0.16). Throughout this doping range, the crystal structure retains a tetragonal symmetry (space group I41/a) with two distinct magnetic Ir sites in the unit cell forming staggered IrO6 rotation. Upon Rh doping, the magnetic order is suppressed and the magnetic moment of Ir4+ is reduced from 0.21μB/Ir for x=0 to 0.18μB/Ir for x=0.12. The magnetic structure …

The acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectra, where the known hadronic sources have been subtracted from the inclusive dielectron mass spectra, are reported for the first time at mid-rapidity ∣yee∣+ Au collisions at √sNN = 19.6 and 200 GeV. The excess mass spectra are consistently described by a model calculation with a broadened ρ spectral function for Mee < 1.1 GeV/c2. The integrated dielectron excess yield at √sNN = 19.6 GeV for 0.4 < Mee < 0.75 GeV/c2, normalized to the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity, has a value similar to that in ln+ln collisions at …

We have undertaken an ambitious program to visually classify all galaxies in the five CANDELS fields down to H < 24.5 involving the dedicated efforts of over 65 individual classifiers. Once completed, we expect to have detailed morphological classifications for over 50,000 galaxies spanning 0 < z < 4 over all the fields, with classifications from 3 to 5 independent classifiers for each galaxy. Here, we present our detailed visual classification scheme, which was designed to cover a wide range of CANDELS science goals. This scheme includes the basic Hubble sequence types, but also includes a detailed look at mergers and interactions, the clumpiness of galaxies, k-corrections, and a variety of other structural properties. In this paper, we focus on the first field to be completed—GOODS-S, which has been classified at various depths. The wide area coverage spanning the full field (wide+deep+ERS) includes 7634 galaxies that have been classified by at least three different people. In the deep area of the field, 2534 galaxies have been classified by at least five different people at three different depths. With this paper, we release to the public …

Revisiting Scalar Glueballs, Hai-Yang Cheng, Chun-Khiang Chua, Keh-Fei Liu

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

It is commonly believed that the lowest-lying scalar glueball lies somewhere in the isosinglet scalar mesons f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710) denoted generically by f0. In this work we consider lattice calculations and experimental data to infer the glue and qq components of f0. These include the calculations of the scalar glueball masses in quenched and unquenched lattice QCD, measurements of the radiative decays J/ψ→γf0, the ratio of f0 decays to ππ, KK and ηη, the ratio of J/ψ decays …

We present a catalog of visual-like H-band morphologies of ~50.000 galaxies (Hf160w < 24.5) in the 5 CANDELS fields (GOODS-N, GOODS-S, UDS, EGS, and COSMOS). Morphologies are estimated using Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets). The median redshift of the sample is 〈z〉 ~ 1.25. The algorithm is trained on GOODS-S, for which visual classifications are publicly available, and then applied to the other 4 fields. Following the CANDELS main morphology classification scheme, our model retrieves for each galaxy the probabilities of having a spheroid or a disk, presenting an irregularity, being compact or a point source, and being unclassifiable. ConvNets are able to predict the fractions of votes given to a galaxy image with zero bias and ~10% scatter. The fraction of mis-classifications is …

On The Disk Wind Mass Loss Rates In Qsos, Nicolas A. Pereyra Nov 2015

On The Disk Wind Mass Loss Rates In Qsos, Nicolas A. Pereyra

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We derive here a relatively simple expression for the total wind mass loss rates in QSOs within the accretion disk wind scenario. We show that the simple expression derived here for QSO disk wind mass loss rate is in a very good agreement with the more “exact” values obtained through significantly more complex and detailed numerically intensive 2.5D time-dependent simulations. Additionally we show that for typical QSO parameters, the disk itself will be emitting mostly in the UV/optical spectrum, in turn implying that the X-ray emission from QSOs likely is produced through some physical mechanism acting at radii smaller than …

We report the first measurement of the target single-spin asymmetry, Ay, in quasielastic scattering from the inclusive reaction 3He↑(e,e′ ) on a 3He gas target polarized normal to the lepton scattering plane. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero for one-photon exchange. A nonzero Ay can arise from the interference between the one- and two-photon exchange processes which is sensitive to the details of the substructure of the nucleon. An experiment recently completed at Jefferson Lab yielded asymmetries with high statistical precision at Q2=0.13, 0.46, and …

Spin Nematics, Valence-Bond Solids, And Spin Liquids In So(N) Quantum Spin Models On The Triangular Lattice, Ribhu K. Kaul

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We introduce a simple model of SO(N) spins with two-site interactions which is amenable to quantum Monte Carlo studies without a sign problem on nonbipartite lattices. We present numerical results for this model on the two-dimensional triangular lattice where we find evidence for a spin nematic at small N, a valence-bond solid at large N, and a quantum spin liquid at intermediate N. By the introduction of a sign-free four-site interaction, we uncover a rich phase diagram with evidence for both first-order and exotic continuous phase transitions.

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Molecular imaging is very promising technique used for surgical guidance, which requires advancements related to properties of imaging agents and subsequent data retrieval methods from measured multispectral images. In this article, an upconversion material is introduced for subsurface near-infrared imaging and for the depth recovery of the material embedded below the biological tissue. The results confirm significant correlation between the analytical depth estimate of the material under the tissue and the measured ratio of emitted light from the material at two different wavelengths. Experiments with biological tissue samples demonstrate depth resolved imaging using the rare earth doped multifunctional phosphors. In …

Numerical Studies Of Various Néel-Vbs Transitions In Su(N) Anti-Ferromagnets, Ribhu K. Kaul, Matthew S. Block

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

In this manuscript we review recent developments in the numerical simulations of bipartite SU(N) spin models by quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. We provide an account of a large family of newly discovered sign-problem free spin models which can be simulated in their ground states on large lattices, containing O(105) spins, using the stochastic series expansion method with efficient loop algorithms. One of the most important applications so far of these Hamiltonians are to unbiased studies of quantum criticality between Neel and valence bond phases in two dimensions - a summary of this body of …

We present new ultraviolet, optical, and X-ray data on the Phoenix galaxy cluster (SPT-CLJ2344-4243). Deep optical imaging reveals previously undetected filaments of star formation, extending to radii of ~50–100 kpc in multiple directions. Combined UV-optical spectroscopy of the central galaxy reveals a massive (2 x 109 M⊙), young (~4.5 Myr) population of stars, consistent with a time-averaged star formation rate of 610 ± 50 M⊙ yr−1. We report a strong detection of O ᴠɪ λλ1032,1038, which appears to originate primarily in shock-heated gas, but may contain a substantial contribution (>1000 M⊙ …

Electrically Tunable Transport In The Antiferromagnetic Mott Insulator Sr2Iro4, C. Wang, H. Seinige, Gang Cao, J.-S. Zhou, J. B. Goodenough, M. Tsoi

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Electronic transport properties of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 have been investigated under extremely high electric biases. Using nanoscale contacts, we apply electric fields up to a few MV/m to a single crystal of Sr2IrO4 and observe a continuous reduction in the material's resistivity with increasing bias, characterized by a reduction in the transport activation energy by as much as 16%. Temperature-dependent resistivity measurements provide a means to unambiguously retrieve the bias dependence of the activation energy from the Arrhenius plots at different biases. We further demonstrate the feasibility of reversible resistive switching induced …

The Nature And Frequency Of Outflows From Stars In The Central Orion Nebula Cluster, C. R. O'Dell, Gary J. Ferland, W. J. Henney, M. Peimbert, Ma. T. García-Díaz, Robert H. Rubin Sep 2015

The Nature And Frequency Of Outflows From Stars In The Central Orion Nebula Cluster, C. R. O'Dell, Gary J. Ferland, W. J. Henney, M. Peimbert, Ma. T. García-Díaz, Robert H. Rubin

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Recent Hubble Space Telescope images have allowed the determination with unprecedented accuracy of motions and changes of shocks within the inner Orion Nebula. These originate from collimated outflows from very young stars, some within the ionized portion of the nebula and others within the host molecular cloud. We have doubled the number of Herbig–Haro objects known within the inner Orion Nebula. We find that the best-known Herbig–Haro shocks originate from relatively few stars, with the optically visible X-ray source COUP 666 driving many of them. While some isolated shocks are driven by single collimated outflows, many groups of shocks are …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The spatial fluctuations of the extragalactic background light trace the total emission from all stars and galaxies in the Universe. A multiwavelength study can be used to measure the integrated emission from first galaxies during reionization when the Universe was about 500 million years old. Here we report arcmin-scale spatial fluctuations in one of the deepest sky surveys with the Hubble Space Telescope in five wavebands between 0.6 and 1.6 μm. We model-fit the angular power spectra of intensity fluctuation measurements to find the ultraviolet luminosity density of galaxies at redshifts greater than 8 to be log ρUV = …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The experimental signature in searches for the neutrinoless double-β decay of 76Ge is a peak near 2039 keV in the spectrum. Given the low probability of the process, it is important that the background in this region be well understood. Inelastic scattering reactions with neutrons from muon-induced interactions and (α,n) reactions in the surrounding materials or in the detector can provide contributions to the background. We have measured the production cross sections for γ rays from the 76Ge(n,n'γ ) reaction in the 2039-keV region at incident neutron energies up to …

Low Intensity Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy Of The Lake Labyrinth Meteorite, Tristan C. Paul Sep 2015

Low Intensity Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy Of The Lake Labyrinth Meteorite, Tristan C. Paul

Physics

A 23.7g fragment of the Lake Labyrinth Meteorite (fell in 1924, collected in 1934 at Lake Labyrinth in South Australia, Australia) was re-investigated for evidence of the presence of 98Tc using a two dimensional low-intensity gamma-ray spectrometer. A new calibration technique using 26Al sources found the gamma-rays previously thought to be due to 98Tc are more likely from 166Ho. The presence of 166Ho is most likely due to activation of the stable 165Ho in the meteorite from terrestrial background sources where it was stored.

Dna Cyclization And Looping In The Wormlike Limit: Normal Modes And The Validity Of The Harmonic Approximation, Stefan M. Giovan, Andreas Hanke, Stephen D. Levene

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

For much of the last three decades, Monte Carlo-simulation methods have been the standard approach for accurately calculating the cyclization probability, J, or J factor, for DNA models having sequence-dependent bends or inhomogeneous bending flexibility. Within the last 10 years approaches based on harmonic analysis of semi-flexible polymer models have been introduced, which offer much greater computational efficiency than Monte Carlo techniques. These methods consider the ensemble of molecular conformations in terms of harmonic fluctuations about a well-defined elastic-energy minimum. However, the harmonic approximation is only applicable for small systems, because the accessible conformation space of larger systems is increasingly …

We report a new measurement of the midrapidity inclusive jet longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, in polarized pp collisions at center-of-mass energy √s=200  GeV. The STAR data place stringent constraints on polarized parton distribution functions extracted at next-to-leading order from global analyses of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), semi-inclusive DIS, and RHIC pp data. The measured asymmetries provide evidence at the 3σ level for positive gluon polarization in the Bjorken-x region x>0.05.

Magnetohydrodynamic Modeling Of Three Van Allen Probes Storms In 2012 And 2013, J. Paral, M. K. Hudson, B. T. Kress, M. J. Wiltberger

Dartmouth Scholarship

Coronal mass ejection (CME)-shock compression of the dayside magnetopause has been observed to cause both prompt enhancement of radiation belt electron flux due to inward radial transport of electrons conserving their first adiabatic invariant and prompt losses which at times entirely eliminate the outer zone. Recent numerical studies suggest that enhanced ultra-low frequency (ULF) wave activity is necessary to explain electron losses deeper inside the magnetosphere than magnetopause incursion following CME-shock arrival. A combination of radial transport and magnetopause shadowing can account for losses observed at radial distances into L=4.5, well within the computed magnetopause location. We compare ULF wave …

Phase-Coherent Mapping Of Gravitational-Wave Backgrounds Using Ground-Based Laser Interferometers, Joseph D. Romano, Stephen R. Taylor, Neil Cornish, Jonathan Gair, Chiara M. F. Mingarelli, Rutger Van Haasteren

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We extend the formalisms developed in Gair et al. [1] and Cornish and van Haasteren [2] to create maps of gravitational-wave backgrounds using a network of ground-based laser interferometers. We show that in contrast to pulsar timing arrays, which are insensitive to the curl modes of the background, a network of ground-based interferometers is sensitive to both the gradient and curl components. The spatial separation of a network of interferometers, or of a single interferometer at different times during its rotational and orbital motion around the Sun, allows for recovery of both components. We derive expressions for the response functions …

In a combined experimental and theoretical study, we investigate the properties of Sr2Ir1−xRhxO4. From the branching ratios of the L-edge isotropic x-ray absorption spectra, we determine that the spin-orbit coupling is remarkably independent of x for both iridium and rhodium sites. DFT+U calculations show that the doping is close to isoelectronic and introduces impurity bands of predominantly rhodium character close to the lower Hubbard band. Overlap of these two bands leads to metallic behavior. Since the low-energy states for xjeff=1/2 character, we suggest that the electronic …

The low energy electronic structure of Sr2IrO4 has been well studied and understood in terms of an effective Jeff = 1/2 Mott insulator model. However, little work has been done in studying its high energy electronic behaviors. Here we report a new observation of the anomalous high energy electronic structure in Sr2IrO4. By taking high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on Sr2IrO4 over a wide energy range, we have revealed for the first time that the high energy electronic structures show unusual nearly-vertical bands that extend over a large energy range. …

Herschel Dust Emission As A Probe Of Starless Cores Mass: Mcld 123.5+24.9 Of The Polaris Flare, Gururaj Anil Wagle, Thomas H. Troland, Gary J. Ferland, Nicholas P. Abel

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present newly processed archival Herschel images of molecular cloud MCLD 123.5+24.9 in the Polaris Flare. This cloud contains five starless cores. Using the spectral synthesis code Cloudy, we explore uncertainties in the derivation of column densities, and hence masses of molecular cores from Herschel data. We first consider several detailed grain models that predict far-infrared grain opacities. Opacities predicted by the models differ by more than a factor of two, leading to uncertainties in derived column densities by the same factor. Then we consider uncertainties associated with the modified blackbody fitting process used by observers to estimate column densities. …
