Using Geant To Model Calrimeter Response For Electromagnetic Cascades From Nucleus-Nucleus Interactions In A Cosmic Ray Detector, Kazuhiko Murai, Carlos A. Sanchez, Donald C. Wold

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Ascintillating optical fiber calorimeter (SOFCAL) is being developed by NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center for use in balloon-borne experiments to study the spectrum of high-energy cosmic rays and gamma rays. SOFCAL will not saturate for long exposures and the calorimeter willbe useful in emulsion chambers to study primary cosmic-ray nuclei with energies from 100 GeV to 1,000 TeV. The event generator FRITIOF was used to model the collision of a cosmic-ray projectile with a target nucleus inan emulsion chamber. The measurements of charged particles from the interaction in the emulsions are related to the energy of the primary cosmic ray nucleus-nucleus …

SOFCAL willnot saturate for long exposures and this calorimeter inthese balloon-borne emulsion chambers willbe helpful for the study of the composition of primary cosmic-ray nuclei. For primary nuclei with energies much greater than 1014 eV, nucleus-nucleus interactions are likely to exhibit characteristics of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Aparticle event generator was used tomodel the collision of a cosmic-ray nucleus with a target nucleus inan emulsion chamber. FRITIOF …

Gravity And Electromagnetism In Noncommutative Geometry, Giovanni Landi, Nguyen Ai Viet, Kameshwar C. Wali Jan 1994

Gravity And Electromagnetism In Noncommutative Geometry, Giovanni Landi, Nguyen Ai Viet, Kameshwar C. Wali

Physics - All Scholarship

We present a unified description of gravity and electromagnetism in the framework of a Z 2 non-commutative differential calculus. It can be considered as a “discrete version” of Kaluza-Klein theory, where the fifth continuous dimension is replaced by two discrete points. We derive an action which coincides with the dimensionally reduced one of the ordinary Kaluza-Klein theory.

Relativistic Particle Transport In Hot Accretion Disks, P. A. Becker, Menas Kafatos, M. Maisack Jan 1994

Relativistic Particle Transport In Hot Accretion Disks, P. A. Becker, Menas Kafatos, M. Maisack

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Accretion disks around rapidly rotating black holes provide one of the few plausible models for the production of intense radiation in AGNs above energies of several hundred MeV. The rapid rotation of the hole increases the binding energy per nucleon in the last stable orbit relative to the Schwarzschild case, and naturally leads to ion temperatures in the range 10^12-10^13 K for sub-Eddington accretion rates. The protons in the hot inner region of a steady, two-temperature disk form a reservoir of energy that is sufficient to power the observed EGRET outbursts if the black hole mass is 10^10 M0 • …

Transonic Inviscid Disc Flows In The Schwarzschild Metric – I, Menas Kafatos, Ruixin Yang Jan 1994

Transonic Inviscid Disc Flows In The Schwarzschild Metric – I, Menas Kafatos, Ruixin Yang

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The coupled hydrodynamic equations governing equatorial flows applicable to inviscid disc accretion in the Schwarzschild metric are solved analytically and numerically. Here, we concentrate on the transonic solutions, that represent physically allowed accretion on to black holes. A polytropic equation linking gas pressure and density is assumed, and solutions are obtained for different conditions, such as isothermal and adiabatic gas flows. The dependence of those solutions on the angular momentum is explored. Under certain conditions, when there exist multiple possible sonic points, the numerical simulation automatically zeros in to the unique transonic solution passing through one of the sonic points.

Monte Carlo Simulation Of The Scintillating Optical Fiber Calorimeter (Sofcal), Zibin Yang, Russell Gillum, Donald C. Wold Jan 1994

Monte Carlo Simulation Of The Scintillating Optical Fiber Calorimeter (Sofcal), Zibin Yang, Russell Gillum, Donald C. Wold

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A scintillating optical fiber calorimeter (SOFCAL) is being developed by NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center for use in balloon-borne emulsion chambers to study the spectrum of high-energy cosmic rays and gamma rays. SOFCAL will not saturate for long exposures, and the detector will be helpful for the study of primary cosmic-ray nuclei energies from 100 GeV to 1,000 TeV. For a given incident particle and energy, computer simulations of electromagnetic cascades allow computation of energy deposited in different regions of the calorimeter. For these initial simulations, a 5-cm x 5-cm x 7-cm calorimeter was used. Each subsection contained a 0.4-cm thick …

Black Holes And Singularities, Andrew Lang Jan 1993

Black Holes And Singularities, Andrew Lang

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

First, I give definitions and mathematical preliminaries. Secondly, I give a history of the derivation of Einstein's field equations. From this basis, I present a derivation of Schwarzschild's solution. A discussion then follows of various types of black holes: stationary, charged, rotating, and charged/rotating. I also give a pictorial representation of the properties of each algebraically special solution. Finally, I present a general definition of singularities along with a discussion of closed trapped surfaces and naked singularities.

An Algebraic Approach To The Quantization Of Cosntrained Systems: Finite Dimensional Examples, Ranjeet S. Tate Jan 1992

An Algebraic Approach To The Quantization Of Cosntrained Systems: Finite Dimensional Examples, Ranjeet S. Tate

Physics - All Scholarship

We discuss the statistical mechanics of magnetic flux lines in a finite-thickness slab of type-II superconductor. The long wavelength properties of a flux-line liquid in a slab geometry are described by a hydrodynamic free energy that incorporates the boundary conditions on the flux lines at the sample's surface as a surface contribution to the free energy. Bulk and surface weak disorder are modeled via Gaussian impurity potentials. This free energy is used to evaluate the two-dimensional structure factor of the flux-line tips at the sample surface. We find that surface interaction always dominates in determining the decay of translational correlations …

Gravitational Motion: An Interaction?, Frank H. Meyer Jan 1975

Gravitational Motion: An Interaction?, Frank H. Meyer

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

"Non-implications" in Newton's Law of Gravitation are discussed to emphasize different approaches in two books treating the subject: Dewey Larson's Beyond Newton, and Gravitation, by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler. The author notes that the latter book ignores the possibility that gravitation may not be an interaction; while Larson accepts Newton's Law of Gravitation as a mathematically valid statement of Kepler's Laws of Planetary Motion, thus being applicable to the sun and planets even if they are not actually interacting.
