Investigating An Energy-Preserving Spectral Finite Difference Numerical Method For A Wave Equation On The Metric Graph, Tue Minh Tran
Investigating An Energy-Preserving Spectral Finite Difference Numerical Method For A Wave Equation On The Metric Graph, Tue Minh Tran
University Honors Theses
To investigate the accuracy and long-term energy conservation of a spectral finite difference numerical method for a wave equation on metric graphs. In conservative systems, numerical methods should preserve total energy. However, explicit finite difference methods require impractically small space steps and exhibit energy drift at end points. To address these limitations, a spectral finite difference method is implemented using a Fourier transformation. This semi-spectral method improves stability at endpoints while maintaining second-order accuracy, achieving an overall error of O(∆t2). We implement the semi-spectral method on the IEEE14 metric graph and provide visuals showing the initial condition …
Energy Calculations And Wave Equations, Ellen R. Hunter
Energy Calculations And Wave Equations, Ellen R. Hunter
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The focus of this thesis is to show how methods of Fourier analysis, in particular Parseval’s equality, can be used to provide explicit energy calculations for solutions of wave equations in one dimension. These calculations are discussed for simple examples and then extended to fit the general wave equation with Robin boundary conditions. Ideas from Sobolev space theory are used to provide justification of the method.
Systems Of Nonlinear Wave Equations With Damping And Supercritical Sources, Yanqiu Guo
Systems Of Nonlinear Wave Equations With Damping And Supercritical Sources, Yanqiu Guo
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
We consider the local and global well-posedness of the coupled nonlinear wave equations
utt – Δu + g1(ut) = f1(u, v)
vtt – Δv + g2(vt) = f2(u, v);
in a bounded domain Ω subset of the real numbers (Rn) with a nonlinear Robin boundary condition on u and a zero boundary conditions on v. The nonlinearities f1(u, v) and f2(u, v) are with supercritical exponents …
Global Well-Posedness For A Nonlinear Wave Equation With P-Laplacian Damping, Zahava Wilstein
Global Well-Posedness For A Nonlinear Wave Equation With P-Laplacian Damping, Zahava Wilstein
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation deals with the global well-posedness of the nonlinear wave equation
utt − Δu − Δput = f (u) in Ω × (0,T),
{u(0), ut(0)} = {u0,u1} ∈ H10 (Ω) × L 2 (Ω),
u = 0 on Γ × (0, T ),
in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℜ n with Dirichlét boundary conditions. The nonlinearities f (u) acts as a strong source, which is allowed to …

Following Antman [Amer. Math. Mon., 87 (1980), pp. 359–370], we advocate a more physically realistic and systematic derivation of the wave equation suitable for a typical undergraduate course in partial differential equations. To demonstrate the utility of this derivation, three applications that follow naturally are described: strings, hanging chains, and jump ropes.

We investigate wave solutions of a lubrication model for surfactant-driven flow of a thin liquid film down an inclined plane. We model the flow in one space dimension with a system of nonlinear PDEs of mixed hyperbolic-parabolic type in which the effects of capillarity and surface diffusion are neglected. Numerical solutions reveal distinct patterns of waves that are described analytically by combinations of traveling waves, some with jumps in height and surfactant concentration gradient. The various waves and combinations are strikingly different from what is observed in the case of flow on a horizontal plane. Jump conditions admit new shock …
Neumann Boundary Control Of Hyperbolic Equations With Pointwise State Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jean-Pierre Raymond
Neumann Boundary Control Of Hyperbolic Equations With Pointwise State Constraints, Boris S. Mordukhovich, Jean-Pierre Raymond
Mathematics Research Reports
We consider optimal control problems for hyperbolic systems with controls in Neumann boundary conditions with pointwise (hard) constraints on control and state functions. Focusing on hyperbolic dynamics governed by the multidimensional wave equation with a nonlinear term, we derive new necessary optimality conditions in the pointwise form of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle for the state-constrained problem under consideration. Our approach is based on modern methods of variational analysis that allows us to obtain refined necessary optimality conditions with no convexity assumptions on integrands in the minimizing cost functional.
