Formation Of Organized Nanostructures From Unstable Bilayers Of Thin Metallic Liquids, Mikhail Khenner, Sagar Yadavali, Ramki Kalyanaraman
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Dewetting of pulsed-laser irradiated, thin (< 20 nm), optically reflective metallic bilayers on an optically transparent substrate with a reflective support layer is studied within the lubrication equations model. A steady-state bilayer film thickness (h) dependent temperature profile is derived based on the mean substrate temperature estimated from the elaborate thermal model of transient heating and melting/freezing. Large thermocapillary forces are observed along the plane of the liquid-liquid and liquid-gas interfaces due to this h-dependent temperature, which, in turn, is strongly influenced by the h-dependent laser light reflection and absorption. Consequently the dewetting is a result of the competition between thermocapillary and intermolecular forces. A linear analysis of the dewetting length scales established that the non-isothermal calculations better predict the experimental results as compared to the isothermal case within the bounding Hamaker coefficients. Subsequently, a computational non-linear dynamics study of the dewetting pathway was performed for Ag/Co and Co/Ag bilayer systems to predict the morphology evolution. We found that the systems evolve towards formation of different morphologies, including core-shell, embedded, or stacked nanostructure morphologies.
A Dynamical Study Of The Evolution Of Pressure Waves Propagating Through A Semi-Infinite Region Of Homogeneous Gas Combustion Subject To A Time-Harmonic Signal At The Boundary, John Eslick
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, the evolution of a pressure wave driven by a harmonic signal on the boundary during gas combustion is studied. The problem is modeled by a nonlinear, hyperbolic partial differential equation. Steady-state behavior is investigated using the perturbation method to ensure that enough time has passed for any transient effects to have dissipated. The zeroth, first and second-order perturbation solutions are obtained and their moduli are plotted against frequency. It is seen that the first and second-order corrections have unique maxima that shift to the right as the frequency decreases and to the left as the frequency increases. …
The Singular Perturbation In The Analysis Of Mode I Fracture Based Upon A New Multiscale Theory, Kai-Bin Fu
The Singular Perturbation In The Analysis Of Mode I Fracture Based Upon A New Multiscale Theory, Kai-Bin Fu
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A theory of fracture is presented that is based upon an extension of continuum mechanics to the nanoscale fracture through the incorporation of long-range intermolecular forces which correct bulk material descriptions near interfaces. To be consistent with the literature, constant surface energies are assigned to interfaces. In the analysis of mode I fracture for quasi-brittle material, it is observed that the incorporation of these long-range intermolecular forces predicts sharp fracture tip rather than blunt and avoids stress singularity. The details of the singular perturbation employed in this analysis are also presented.
The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma
The Principle Of Linearized Stability For Size-Structured Population Models, M. El-Doma
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The principle of linearized stability for size-structured population dynamics models is proved giving validity to previous stability results reported in, for example, El-Doma (2008-1). In particular, we show that if all the roots of the characteristic equation lie to the left of the imaginary axis then the steady state is locally exponentially stable, and on the other hand, if there is at least one root that lies to the right of the imaginary axis then the steady state is unstable. We also point out cases when there is resonance
Boundary Element Method (Bem) And Method Of Fundamental Solutions (Mfs) For The Boundary Value Problems Of The 2-D Laplace's Equation, Ermes Anthony Salgado-Ibarra
Boundary Element Method (Bem) And Method Of Fundamental Solutions (Mfs) For The Boundary Value Problems Of The 2-D Laplace's Equation, Ermes Anthony Salgado-Ibarra
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this thesis we study the solution of the two dimensional Laplace equation by the boundary Element method (BEM) and the method of fundamental solutions (MFS). Both the BEM and MFS used to solve boundary value problems involving the Laplace equation 2-D settings. Both methods rely on the use of fundamental solution of the Laplace's equation (the solution of Laplace's equation in the distributional sense). We will contrast and compare the results we get using the BEM with results we get using the MFS.

Nondestructive Electrothermal Detection Of Corrosion, Brittany Ambeau, Harris Enniss, Stefan Schnake
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
Nondestructive testing and imaging plays an important role in many industries, e.g., the monitoring and maintenance of corrosion in aircraft. The general technique is to input energy in some form into an object, observe the object’s response, and from this input-output information determine the internal structure. New techniques are always being explored, and recently there has been much interest in methods that use multiple forms of energy. In this vein, we examine a new technique for imaging corrosion or material loss in an object by combining electrical and thermal measurements on some accessible portion of the object’s outer boundary. The …
Cloaking Against Thermal Imaging, Maple So
Cloaking Against Thermal Imaging, Maple So
Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)
There has been a lot of recent interest in cloaking and invisibility in the mathematics and science communities, and in fact physically plausible mechanisms have been proposed (some built) for cloaking an object against detection using a variety of electromagnetic methods. The ideas are very general, however, and should allow one to design cloaks that work against other forms of imaging. We examine the possibility of cloaking an object to make it invisible to an observer using thermal energy (heat) as the imaging tool. Specifically, we desire to cloak an object inside a two-dimensional disk by cutting a small hole …

On The N-Wave Equations And Soliton Interactions In Two And Three Dimensions, Vladimir S. Gerdjikov, Rossen Ivanov, Assen V. Kyuldjiev
Articles
Several important examples of the N-wave equations are studied. These integrable equations can be linearized by formulation of the inverse scattering as a local Riemann–Hilbert problem (RHP). Several nontrivial reductions are presented. Such reductions can be applied to the generic N-wave equations but mainly the 3- and 4-wave interactions are presented as examples. Their one and two-soliton solutions are derived and their soliton interactions are analyzed. It is shown that additional reductions may lead to new types of soliton solutions. In particular the 4-wave equations with Z2xZ2 reduction group allow breather-like solitons. Finally it is demonstrated that …

The geodesic equations of a class of right invariant metrics on the semi-direct product of two Diff(S) groups are studied. The equations are explicitly described, they have the form of a system of coupled equations of Camassa-Holm type and possess singular (peakon) solutions. Their integrability is further investigated, however no compatible bi-Hamiltonian structures on the corresponding dual Lie algebra are found.

Two-Scale Microstructure Dynamics, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski, Juri Engelbrecht
Publications
Wave propagation in materials with embedded two different microstructures is considered. Each microstructure is characterized by its own length scale. The dual internal variables approach is adopted yielding in a Mindlin-type model including both microstructures. Equations of motion for microstructures are coupled with the balance of linear momentum for the macromotion, but not coupled with each other. Corresponding dispersion curves are provided and scale separation is pointed out.
Smooth And Peaked Solitons Of The Camassa-Holm Equation And Applications, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov
Smooth And Peaked Solitons Of The Camassa-Holm Equation And Applications, Darryl Holm, Rossen Ivanov
Articles
The relations between smooth and peaked soliton solutions are reviewed for the Camassa- Holm (CH) shallow water wave equation in one spatial dimension. The canonical Hamiltonian formulation of the CH equation in action-angle variables is expressed for solitons by using the scattering data for its associated isospectral eigenvalue problem, rephrased as a Riemann- Hilbert problem. The momentum map from the action-angle scattering variables T∗(TN) to the flow momentum (X∗) provides the Eulerian representation of the N-soliton solution of CH in terms of the scattering data and squared eigenfunctions of its isospectral eigenvalue problem. The …

On Temporal Instability Of Electrically Forced Axisymmetric Jets With Variable Applied Field And Nonzero Basic State Velocity, Dambaru Bhatta, Sayantan Das, Daniel N. Riahi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The problem of instability of electrically forced axisymmetric jets with respect to temporally growing disturbances is investigated computationally. We derive a dispersion relation based on the relevant approximated versions of the equations of the electro-hydrodynamics for an electrically forced jet flow. For temporal instability, we find in the realistic cases of the non-zero basic state velocity that the growth rate of the unstable mode is unaffected by the value of the basic state velocity. However, the non-zero value of the basic state velocity affects significantly the period of the unstable mode in the sense that it decreases the period, and …

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present paper deals with the determination of unknown temperature and thermal stresses on the curved surface of a semi-infinite circular cylinder defined as 0 ≤ r ≤ a , 0 ≤ z ≤ ∞. The circular cylinder is subjected to an arbitrary known temperature under unsteady state condition. Initially, the cylinder is at zero temperature and temperature at the lower surface is held fixed at zero. The governing heat conduction equation has been solved by using the integral transform method. The results are obtained in series form in terms of Bessel’s functions. A mathematical model has been constructed for …

Algorithms To Solve Singularly Perturbed Volterra Integral Equations, Marwan T. Alquran, Bilal Khair
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we apply the Differential Transform Method (DTM) and Variational Iterative Method (VIM) to develop algorithms for solving singularly perturbed volterra integral equations (SPVIEs). The study outlines the significant features of the two methods. A comparison between the two methods for the solution of SPVIs is given for three examples. The results show that both methods are very efficient, convenient and applicable to a large class of problems.

Multidimensional Inverse Boundary Value Problem For A System Of Hyperbolic Equations, M. A. Guliev, E. M. El-Hadidi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In the paper we investigate the solvability of the inverse multidimensional boundary value problem for the system of hyperbolic type equations. A method is proposed to reduce the considered problem to some non infinite system of differential equations. The proposed method allows one to prove the existence and uniqueness theorems for the multidimensional inverse boundary value problems in the class of the functions with bounded smoothness.

Analytic And Numerical Studies Of A Simple Model Of Attractive-Repulsive Swarms, Andrew S. Ronan
Analytic And Numerical Studies Of A Simple Model Of Attractive-Repulsive Swarms, Andrew S. Ronan
HMC Senior Theses
We study the equilibrium solutions of an integrodifferential equation used to model one-dimensional biological swarms. We assume that the motion of the swarm is governed by pairwise interactions, or a convolution in the continuous setting, and derive a continuous model from conservation laws. The steady-state solution found for the model is compactly supported and is shown to be an attractive equilibrium solution via linear perturbation theory. Numerical simulations support that the steady-state solution is attractive for all initial swarm distributions. Some initial results for the model in higher dimensions are also presented.

Operator Splitting Method And Applications For Semilinear Parabolic Partial Differential Equations, R. Corban Harwood
Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics
This dissertation presents a redefined operator splitting method used in solving semilinear parabolic partial differential equations. As one such form, the reaction-diffusion equation is highly prevalent in mathematical modeling. Besides being physically meaningful as a separation of two distinct physical processes in this equation, operator splitting simplifies the solution method in several ways. The super-linear speed-up of computations is a rewarding simplification as it presents great benefits for large-scale systems. In solving these semilinear equations, we will develop a condition for oscillation-free methods, a condition independent of the usual stability condition. This numerical consideration is important to fully embody our …

On Morrey Spaces In The Calculus Of Variations, Kyle Fey
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
We prove some global Morrey regularity results for almost minimizers of functionals of the form u → ∫Ω f(x, u, ∇u)dx. This regularity is valid up to the boundary, provided the boundary data are sufficiently regular. The main assumption on f is that for each x and u, the function f(x, u, ·) behaves asymptotically like the function h(|·|)α(x), where h is an N-function.
Following this, we provide a characterization of the class of Young measures that can be generated by a sequence …
Quantum Mechanical Model Of The Hydrogen Atom, Andres Ortiz^, Snehanshu Saha*
Quantum Mechanical Model Of The Hydrogen Atom, Andres Ortiz^, Snehanshu Saha*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
The quantum mechanical wave function of an object under a certain potential is determined by the Schrödinger equation. It is known that the latter equation can be solved analytically only for a finite number of distinct potentials, being a Coulomb potential one of them. For an electron in a hydrogen atom, we analytically find the angular parts of its wave function by the usual method. Under the appropriate change of variable, the radial part of the equation is turned into a Legendre differential equation whose solutions are Legendre polynomials. Using finite difference method and shooting method taking into account physically …

Waves In Microstructured Solids: A Unified Viewpoint Of Modelling, Arkadi Berezovski, Juri Engelbrecht, Mihhail Berezovski
Publications
The basic ideas for describing the dispersive wave motion in microstructured solids are discussed in the one-dimensional setting because then the differences between various microstructure models are clearly visible. An overview of models demonstrates a variety of approaches, but the consistent structure of the theory is best considered from the unified viewpoint of internal variables. It is shown that the unification of microstructure models can be achieved using the concept of dual internal variables.

On The (Non)-Integrability Of The Perturbed Kdv Hierarchy With Generic Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov
Conference papers
Non-holonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called "squared solutions" (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to perturbed models with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV equation. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV hierarchy with generic self-consistent sources are analyzed. This allows one to formulate a set of conditions on the perturbation terms that preserve the integrability. The perturbation corrections to the scattering data and to the corresponding action-angle variables …

Stability Of A Strongly Anisotropic Thin Epitaxial Film In A Wetting Interaction With Elastic Substrate, Mikhail Khenner, Wondimu T. Tekalign, Margo S. Levine
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The linear dispersion relation for longwave surface perturbations, as derived by Levine et al. Phys. Rev. B 75, 205312 (2007) is extended to include a smooth surface energy anisotropy function with a variable anisotropy strength (from weak to strong, such that sharp corners and slightly curved facets occur on the corresponding Wulff shape). Through detailed parametric studies it is shown that a combination of a wetting interaction and strong anisotropy, and even a wetting interaction alone results in complicated linear stability characteristics of strained and unstrained films.
