Underwater Acoustic Signal Analysis Toolkit, Kirk Bienvenu Jr Dec 2017

Underwater Acoustic Signal Analysis Toolkit, Kirk Bienvenu Jr

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This project started early in the summer of 2016 when it became evident there was a need for an effective and efficient signal analysis toolkit for the Littoral Acoustic Demonstration Center Gulf Ecological Monitoring and Modeling (LADC-GEMM) Research Consortium. LADC-GEMM collected underwater acoustic data in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the summer of 2015 using Environmental Acoustic Recording Systems (EARS) buoys. Much of the visualization of data was handled through short scripts and executed through terminal commands, each time requiring the data to be loaded into memory and parameters to be fed through arguments. The vision was to develop …

A Statistical Study Of Student Success In The Bgsu Honors College, Sarah Hercules Dec 2017

A Statistical Study Of Student Success In The Bgsu Honors College, Sarah Hercules

Honors Projects

Higher education has long tried to find the best measures to predict student success. Different colleges often have different guidelines, requiring different criteria to be evaluated. The BGSU Honors College has struggled with retention and recruitment of underrepresented students with their current admission criteria. This analysis studies different measures of student success such as BGSU GPA and number of completed Honors credits for high-achieving BGSU students who enrolled from Fall 2013 through Fall 2016 to find the best predictors of student success through regression analysis. Throughout this paper, the impact of ethnicity, gender, the college of a student’s program, high …

Homogenization Techniques For Population Dynamics In Strongly Heterogeneous Landscapes, Brian P. Yurk, Christina A. Cobbold Dec 2017

Homogenization Techniques For Population Dynamics In Strongly Heterogeneous Landscapes, Brian P. Yurk, Christina A. Cobbold

Faculty Publications

An important problem in spatial ecology is to understand how population-scale patterns emerge from individual-level birth, death, and movement processes. These processes, which depend on local landscape characteristics, vary spatially and may exhibit sharp transitions through behavioural responses to habitat edges, leading to discontinuous population densities. Such systems can be modelled using reaction–diffusion equations with interface conditions that capture local behaviour at patch boundaries. In this work we develop a novel homogenization technique to approximate the large-scale dynamics of the system. We illustrate our approach, which also generalizes to multiple species, with an example of logistic growth within a periodic …

Flow Anisotropy Due To Thread-Like Nanoparticle Agglomerations In Dilute Ferrofluids, Alexander Cali, Wah-Keat Lee, A. David Trubatch, Philip Yecko Dec 2017

Flow Anisotropy Due To Thread-Like Nanoparticle Agglomerations In Dilute Ferrofluids, Alexander Cali, Wah-Keat Lee, A. David Trubatch, Philip Yecko

Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Improved knowledge of the magnetic field dependent flow properties of nanoparticle-based magnetic fluids is critical to the design of biomedical applications, including drug delivery and cell sorting. To probe the rheology of ferrofluid on a sub-millimeter scale, we examine the paths of 550 μm diameter glass spheres falling due to gravity in dilute ferrofluid, imposing a uniform magnetic field at an angle with respect to the vertical. Visualization of the spheres’ trajectories is achieved using high resolution X-ray phase-contrast imaging, allowing measurement of a terminal velocity while simultaneously revealing the formation of an array of long thread-like accumulations of magnetic …

Making Models With Bayes, Pilar Olid Dec 2017

Making Models With Bayes, Pilar Olid

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Bayesian statistics is an important approach to modern statistical analyses. It allows us to use our prior knowledge of the unknown parameters to construct a model for our data set. The foundation of Bayesian analysis is Bayes' Rule, which in its proportional form indicates that the posterior is proportional to the prior times the likelihood. We will demonstrate how we can apply Bayesian statistical techniques to fit a linear regression model and a hierarchical linear regression model to a data set. We will show how to apply different distributions to Bayesian analyses and how the use of a prior affects …

Infinite-Dimensional Measure Spaces And Frame Analysis, Palle Jorgensen, Myung-Sin Song Nov 2017

Infinite-Dimensional Measure Spaces And Frame Analysis, Palle Jorgensen, Myung-Sin Song

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

We study certain infinite-dimensional probability measures in connection with frame analysis. Earlier work on frame-measures has so far focused on the case of finite-dimensional frames. We point out that there are good reasons for a sharp distinction between stochastic analysis involving frames in finite vs. infinite dimensions. For the case of infinite-dimensional Hilbert space ℋ, we study three cases of measures. We first show that, for ℋ infinite dimensional, one must resort to infinite dimensional measure spaces which properly contain ℋ. The three cases we consider are: (i) Gaussian frame measures, (ii) Markov path-space measures, and (iii) determinantal measures.

Modeling Aggregation Of Proliferating Microglia In Response To Amyloid-Beta In Dementia, Adrienne C. Kinney, Ellen R. Swanson Nov 2017

Modeling Aggregation Of Proliferating Microglia In Response To Amyloid-Beta In Dementia, Adrienne C. Kinney, Ellen R. Swanson

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Amyloid-beta plaques are prominent biological markers in dementia brains. In response to plaque formation, the brain's immune cells, microglia, become reactive. Microglia are measurable cells that surround amyloid-beta plaques, indicating their location. A system of partial differential equations describes the concentration of microglia in dementia brains by incorporating chemotactic signaling. However, this system fails to incorporate increasing numbers of reactive microglia cells in response to amyloid-beta aggregation. A system of ordinary differential equations describing the number of significant cells and proteins in the brain suggests the amount of reactive microglia increases significantly during the progression of dementia. We couple these …

Evolution Of Superoscillations For Schrödinger Equation In A Uniform Magnetic Field, Fabrizio Colombo, Jonathan Gantner, Daniele C. Struppa Sep 2017

Evolution Of Superoscillations For Schrödinger Equation In A Uniform Magnetic Field, Fabrizio Colombo, Jonathan Gantner, Daniele C. Struppa

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Aharonov-Berry superoscillations are band-limited functions that oscillate faster than their fastest Fourier component. Superoscillations appear in several fields of science and technology, such as Aharonov’s weak measurement in quantum mechanics, in optics, and in signal processing. An important issue is the study of the evolution of superoscillations using the Schrödinger equation when the initial datum is a weak value. Some superoscillatory functions are not square integrable, but they are real analytic functions that can be extended to entire holomorphic functions. This fact leads to the study of the continuity of a class of convolution operators acting on suitable spaces of …

Some Problems Arising From Mathematical Model Of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ., Heng Li Aug 2017

Some Problems Arising From Mathematical Model Of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ., Heng Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the earliest form of breast cancer. Three mathematical models in the one dimensional case arising from DCIS are proposed. The first two models are in the form of parabolic equation with initial and known moving boundaries. Direct and inverse problems are considered in model 1, existence and uniqueness are proved by using tool from heat potential theory and Volterra integral equations. Also, we discuss the direct problem and nonlocal problem of model 2, existence and uniqueness are proved. And approximation solution of these problems are implemented by Ritz-Galerkin method, which is the first attempt …

Extending Difference Of Votes Rules On Three Voting Models., Sarah Schulz King Aug 2017

Extending Difference Of Votes Rules On Three Voting Models., Sarah Schulz King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a voting situation where there are only two competing alternatives, simple majority rule outputs the alternatives with the most votes or declares a tie if both alternatives receive the same number of votes. For any non-negative integer k, the difference of votes rule Mk outputs the alternative that beats the competing alternative by more than k votes. Llamazares (2006) gives a characterization of the difference of votes rules in terms of five axioms. In this thesis, we extend Llamazares' result by completely describing the class of voting rules that satisfy only two out of his five axioms. …

Cayley Graphs Of Groups And Their Applications, Anna Tripi Aug 2017

Cayley Graphs Of Groups And Their Applications, Anna Tripi

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Cayley graphs are graphs associated to a group and a set of generators for that group (there is also an associated directed graph). The purpose of this study was to examine multiple examples of Cayley graphs through group theory, graph theory, and applications. We gave background material on groups and graphs and gave numerous examples of Cayley graphs and digraphs. This helped investigate the conjecture that the Cayley graph of any group (except Z_2) is hamiltonian. We found the conjecture to still be open. We found Cayley graphs and hamiltonian cycles could be applied to campanology (in particular, to the …

Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg Jul 2017

Mathematical Description And Mechanistic Reasoning: A Pathway Toward Stem Integration, Paul J. Weinberg

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

Because reasoning about mechanism is critical to disciplined inquiry in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) domains, this study focuses on ways to support the development of this form of reasoning. This study attends to how mechanistic reasoning is constituted through mathematical description. This study draws upon Smith’s (2007) characterization of mathematical description of scientific phenomena as ‘‘bootstrapping,’’ where negotiating the relationship between target phenomena and represented relations is fundamental to learning. In addition, the development of mathematical representation presents a viable pathway towards STEM integration. In this study, participants responded to an assessment of mechanistic reasoning while cognitive interviews …

Frechet Differentiable Norm And Locally Uniformly Rotund Renormings, Gaj R. Damai, Prakash M. Bajracharya Jun 2017

Frechet Differentiable Norm And Locally Uniformly Rotund Renormings, Gaj R. Damai, Prakash M. Bajracharya

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we study briefly the role played by the locally uniformly rotund (LUR) norm and Frechet differentiability of a norm on the Banach space theory. Our old outstanding open Problem 3.8 mentioned below is the main object of this paper. We study nearly about it and find some additional assumptions on the space attached with this problem to obtain its positive or negative answer. We investigate different results related to these norms and their duals on different settings. In particular, we introduce reflexive spaces, Banach spaces with unconditional basis, weakly locally uniformly rotund (WLUR) norm, Almost locally uniformly …

Tropical Algebra, Graph Theory, & Foreign Exchange Arbitrage, Bradley A. Mason May 2017

Tropical Algebra, Graph Theory, & Foreign Exchange Arbitrage, Bradley A. Mason

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

We answer the question, given n currencies and k trades, how can a maximal arbitrage opportunity be found and what is its value? To answer this question, we use techniques from graph theory and employ a max-plus algebra (commonly known as tropical algebra). Further, we show how the tropical eigenvalue of a foreign exchange rate matrix relates to arbitrage among the currencies and can be found algorithmically. We finish by employing time series techniques to study the stability of maximal, high-currency arbitrage opportunities.

3-Manifold Perspective On Surface Homeomorphisms For Surfaces With Very Negative Euler Characteristic, Michael Harris May 2017

3-Manifold Perspective On Surface Homeomorphisms For Surfaces With Very Negative Euler Characteristic, Michael Harris

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this paper is to show for a compact triangulated 3-manifold M with boundary which fibers over the circle that whenever F is a fiber with sufficiently negative Euler characteristic the monodromymaps an essential simple closed curve or an essential simple arc in F to be disjoint from its image (possibly after isotopy). This is shown by applying the theorem of Ichihara, Kobayashi, and Rieck in [10] to the double of M to get a pair of pants. We then find an equivariant pair of pants and use it to find an essential simple closed curve or an …
