Lecture 07: Nonlinear Preconditioning Methods And Applications, Xiao-Chuan Cai
Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series
We consider solving system of nonlinear algebraic equations arising from the discretization of partial differential equations. Inexact Newton is a popular technique for such problems. When the nonlinearities in the system are well-balanced, Newton's method works well, but when a small number of nonlinear functions in the system are much more nonlinear than the others, Newton may converge slowly or even stagnate. In such a situation, we introduce some nonlinear preconditioners to balance the nonlinearities in the system. The preconditioners are often constructed using a combination of some domain decomposition methods and nonlinear elimination methods. For the nonlinearly preconditioned problem, …
An Inference-Driven Branch And Bound Optimization Strategy For Planning Ambulance Services, Kevin Mcdaniel
An Inference-Driven Branch And Bound Optimization Strategy For Planning Ambulance Services, Kevin Mcdaniel
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Strategic placement of ambulances is important to the efficient functioning of emergency services. As part of an ongoing collaboration with Wayne County 911, we developed a strategy to optimize the placement of ambulances throughout Wayne County based on de-identified call and response data from 2016 and 2017. The primary goals of the optimization were minimizing annual operating cost and mean response time, as well as providing a constructive solution that could naturally evolve from the existing plan. This thesis details the derivation and implementation of one of the optimization strategies used in this project. It is based on parametric statistical …
Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren
Orbital Stability Results For Soliton Solutions To Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With External Potentials, Joseph B. Lindgren
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
For certain nonlinear Schroedinger equations there exist solutions which are called solitary waves. Addition of a potential $V$ changes the dynamics, but for small enough $||V||_{L^\infty}$ we can still obtain stability (and approximately Newtonian motion of the solitary wave's center of mass) for soliton-like solutions up to a finite time that depends on the size and scale of the potential $V$. Our method is an adaptation of the well-known Lyapunov method.
For the sake of completeness, we also prove long-time stability of traveling solitons in the case $V=0$.
Performance-Robust Dynamic Feedback Control Of Lipschitz Nonlinear Systems, Winston Baker
Performance-Robust Dynamic Feedback Control Of Lipschitz Nonlinear Systems, Winston Baker
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation addresses the dynamic control of nonlinear systems with finite energy noise in the state and measurement equations. Regional eigenvalue assignment (REA) is used to ensure that the state estimate error is driven to zero significantly faster than the state itself. Moreover, the controller is designed for the resulting closed loop system to achieve any one of a set of general performance criteria (GPC). The nonlinear model is assumed to have a Lipschitz nonlinearity both in the state and measurement equations. By using the norm bound of the nonlinearity, the controller is designed to be robust against all nonlinearities …
Finding Unpredictable Behaviors Of Periodic Bouncing For Forced Nonlinear Spring Systems When Oscillating Time Is Large, Yanyue Ning
Honors Scholar Theses
The model of nonlinear spring systems can be applied to deal with different aspect of mechanical problems, such as oscillations in periodic flexing in bridges and ships. The concentration of this research is the bouncing behaviors of nonlinear spring system when the processing time is large, therefore nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE) are suitable since researchers can add different variables into the models and solve them by computational methods. Benefit from this, it is easy to check the oscillations or bouncing behaviors that each variable contributes to the model and find the relationship between some important factors: vibrating frequency, external …
