Local Fractional Functional Analysis And Its Applications, Yang Xiao-Jun Jan 2011

Local Fractional Functional Analysis And Its Applications, Yang Xiao-Jun

Xiao-Jun Yang

Local fractional functional analysis is a totally new area of mathematics, and a totally new mathematical world view as well. In this book, a new approach to functional analysis on fractal spaces, which can be used to interpret fractal mathematics and fractal engineering, is presented. From Cantor sets to fractional sets, real line number and the spaces of local fractional functions are derived. Local fractional calculus of real and complex variables is systematically elucidated. Some generalized spaces, such as generalized metric spaces, generalized normed linear spaces, generalized Banach's spaces, generalized inner product spaces and generalized Hilbert spaces, are introduced. Elemental …

Local Fractional Integral Transforms, Yang X

Xiao-Jun Yang

Over the past ten years, the local fractional calculus revealed to be a useful tool in various areas ranging from fundamental science to various engineering applications, because it can deal with local properties of non-differentiable functions defined on fractional sets. In fractional spaces, a basic theory of number and local fractional continuity of non-differentiable functions are presented, local fractional calculus of real and complex variables is introduced. Some generalized spaces, such as generalized metric spaces, generalized normed linear spaces, generalized Banach’s spaces, generalized inner product spaces and generalized Hilbert spaces, are introduced. Elemental introduction to Yang-Fourier transforms, Yang-Laplace transforms, local …

Optimal Control Of Switched Autonomous Systems In Microbial Fed-Batch Cultures, Chongyang Liu, Enmin Feng Jan 2011

Optimal Control Of Switched Autonomous Systems In Microbial Fed-Batch Cultures, Chongyang Liu, Enmin Feng

Chongyang Liu

A switched autonomous system is proposed to formulate the fed-batch culture process by taking the switching instants between the feed and batch processes as control variables. To maximize the concentration of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) at the terminal time, an optimal control model subject to our proposed switched autonomous system and continuous state inequality constraints is then presented.Acomputational approach is developed to find the optimal switching instants in two aspects. On the one hand, the constraint transcription and smoothing techniques are applied to dealing with the continuous state inequality constraints; on the other hand, the first and the second derivatives of the …

An Analysis Of Presence Of Long Memory In The Indian Foreign Exchange Market, Anoop Sasikumar Jan 2011

An Analysis Of Presence Of Long Memory In The Indian Foreign Exchange Market, Anoop Sasikumar

Anoop Sasikumar

This paper seeks to analyze the presence of long memory in the Indian foreign exchange market using a family of tests. The study has used Nominal Effective Exchange Rate (NEER) series as the data source to check the possible presence of long memory. Three R/S statistics viz. Hurst, Mandelbrot’s and Lo’s modified R/S statistics as well as two semi-parametric tests viz. Robinson’s Gaussian semi-parametric estimate and Andrews-Guggenberger modified GPH estimator are used for the purpose of analysis. All the results conclusively prove the presence of strong version of long memory in the Indian foreign exchange market.

Kinetics Of The Bray-Liebhafsky Oscillatory Reaction Perturbed By Polymer Supported Cobalt Catalyst, Zeljko D. Cupic

Zeljko D Cupic

The Bray-Liebhafsky (BL) oscillatory reaction generated in the batch reactor at 62-68 degree C was perturbed by cobalt(II)-nitrate, supported on the macroreticular copolymer of poly-4-vinylpyridine with divinylbenzene (Co-PVPDVB). The kinetic data was analyzed of the complex pathways of the hydrogen peroxide decomposition in the examined BL reaction. The obtained results confirm that the kinetics of the BL reaction in the presence Co-PVPDVB comes partially from the Co-catalyst and partially from the macroreticular copolymer support.

Influence Of Energy Policy On The Rate Of Implementation Of Biogas Power Plants In Germany During The 2001-2010 Decade, Izabela Chasiak, Wojciech M. Budzianowski

Wojciech Budzianowski

The current article describes energy policy tools, which caused intensive development of biogas-based power generation in Germany during the 2001-2010 decade. The German system of financial support to biogas power plants is presented in details. It is shown that in Germany, i.e. in a country characterised by similar climate and potentials to renewable energy to Poland, biogas power plants cover 10,7% of electricity demands in 2010, while all renewable energy sources cover only 5,4% of electricity demands. It is emphasised that under favourable Polish energy policy, the development of biogas energy can be very rapid.

Stability Of A Strongly Anisotropic Thin Epitaxial Film In A Wetting Interaction With Elastic Substrate, Mikhail Khenner, Wondimu T. Tekalign, Margo S. Levine Jan 2011

Stability Of A Strongly Anisotropic Thin Epitaxial Film In A Wetting Interaction With Elastic Substrate, Mikhail Khenner, Wondimu T. Tekalign, Margo S. Levine

Mikhail Khenner

The linear dispersion relation for longwave surface perturbations, as derived by Levine et al. Phys. Rev. B 75, 205312 (2007) is extended to include a smooth surface energy anisotropy function with a variable anisotropy strength (from weak to strong, such that sharp corners and slightly curved facets occur on the corresponding Wulff shape). Through detailed parametric studies it is shown that a combination of a wetting interaction and strong anisotropy, and even a wetting interaction alone results in complicated linear stability characteristics of strained and unstrained films.

Nonlinear Behaviour Of Sea Surface Waves Based On Low-Gradient Phase-Only Scattering Effects, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney Jan 2011

Nonlinear Behaviour Of Sea Surface Waves Based On Low-Gradient Phase-Only Scattering Effects, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle, Derek Kearney

Conference papers

Nonlinear sea waves generated by the wind, including freak waves, are considered to be phenomena that can be modelled using the nonlinear (cubic) Schrodinger equation, for example. However, there is a problem with this approach which is that sea surface waves, driven by wind speeds of varying strength, must be considered to be composed of two distinct types, namely, linear waves and nonlinear waves. In this paper, we consider a different approach to modelling ‘nonlinear’ waves that is based on a solution to the linear wave equation under a low-gradient, phase-only condition. This approach is entirely compatible with the fluid …

A Generalized Nonlinear Model For The Evolution Of Low Frequency Freak Waves, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2011

A Generalized Nonlinear Model For The Evolution Of Low Frequency Freak Waves, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

This paper presents a generalized model for simulating wave fields associated with the sea surface. This includes the case when `freak waves' may occur through an effect compounded in the nonlinear (cubic) Schrodinger equation. After providing brief introductions to linear sea wave models, `freak waves' and the linear and nonlinear Schrodinger equations, we present a unified model that provides for a piecewise continuous transition from a linear to a nonlinear state. This is based on introducing a fractional time derivative to develop a fractional nonlinear partial differential equation with a stochastic source function. In order to explore the characteristics of …

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2011

On The (Non)-Integrability Of Kdv Hierarchy With Self-Consistent Sources, Vladimir Gerdjikov, Georgi Grahovski, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

Nonholonomic deformations of integrable equations of the KdV hierarchy are studied by using the expansions over the so-called “squared solutions” (squared eigenfunctions). Such deformations are equivalent to a perturbed model with external (self-consistent) sources. In this regard, the KdV6 equation is viewed as a special perturbation of KdV. Applying expansions over the symplectic basis of squared eigenfunctions, the integrability properties of the KdV6 equation are analysed. This allows for a formulation of conditions on the perturbation terms that preserve its integrability. The perturbation corrections to the scattering data and to the corresponding action-angle (canonical) variables are studied. The analysis shows …

Dark-Current-Free Petawatt Laser-Driven Wakefield Accelerator Based On Electron Self-Injection Into An Expanding Plasma Bubble, Serguei Y. Kalmykov, Sunghwan A. Yi, Arnaud Beck, Agustin F. Lifschitz, Xavier Davoine, Erik Lefebvre, Vladimir N. Khudik, Gennady Shvets, Michael C. Downer

Serge Youri Kalmykov

A dark-current-free plasma accelerator driven by a short (~ 150 fs) self-guided petawatt laser pulse is proposed. The accelerator uses two plasma layers, one of which, short and dense, acts as a thin nonlinear lens. It is followed by a long rarefied plasma (~ 10^{17} electrons cm^{−3}) in which background electrons are trapped and accelerated by a nonlinear laser wakefield. The pulse overfocused by the plasma lens diffracts in low-density plasma as in vacuum and drives in its wake a rapidly expanding electron density bubble. The expanding bubble effectively traps initially quiescent electrons. The trapped charge given by quasi-cylindrical three-dimensional …

Hamiltonian Analysis Of Electron Self-Injection And Acceleration Into An Evolving Plasma Bubble, Sunghwan A. Yi, Vladimir N. Khudik, Serguei Y. Kalmykov, Gennady Shvets

Serge Youri Kalmykov

Injection and acceleration of the background plasma electrons in laser wakefield accelerators (LWFA) operated in the blowout (‘bubble’) regime are analysed. Using a model of a slowly expanding spherical plasma bubble propagating with an ultra-relativistic speed, we derive a sufficient condition for the electron injection: the change in the electron’s Hamiltonian in the co-moving with the bubble reference frame must exceed its rest mass energy m_{e}c^2. We demonstrate the existence of the minimal expansion rate of the bubble needed for electron injection. We demonstrate that if the bubble’s expansion is followed by its stabilization or contraction, then a quasi-monoenergetic electron …
