Machine Learning-Based Data And Model Driven Bayesian Uncertanity Quantification Of Inverse Problems For Suspended Non-Structural System, Zhiyuan Qin
All Dissertations
Inverse problems involve extracting the internal structure of a physical system from noisy measurement data. In many fields, the Bayesian inference is used to address the ill-conditioned nature of the inverse problem by incorporating prior information through an initial distribution. In the nonparametric Bayesian framework, surrogate models such as Gaussian Processes or Deep Neural Networks are used as flexible and effective probabilistic modeling tools to overcome the high-dimensional curse and reduce computational costs. In practical systems and computer models, uncertainties can be addressed through parameter calibration, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty quantification, leading to improved reliability and robustness of decision and …
The Magnetic Field Of Protostar-Disk-Outflow Systems, Mahmoud Sharkawi
The Magnetic Field Of Protostar-Disk-Outflow Systems, Mahmoud Sharkawi
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Recent observations of protostellar cores reveal complex magnetic field configurations that are distorted in the innermost disk region. Unlike the prestellar phase, where the magnetic field geometry is simpler with an hourglass configuration, magnetic fields in the protostellar phase are sculpted by the formation of outflows and rapid rotation. This gives rise to a significant azimuthal (or toroidal) component that has not yet been analytically modelled in the literature. Moreover, the onset of outflows, which act as angular momentum transport mechanisms, have received considerable attention in the past few decades. Two mechanisms: 1) the driving by the gradient of a …
A Kuramoto Model Approach To Predicting Chaotic Systems With Echo State Networks, Sophie Wu, Jackson Howe
A Kuramoto Model Approach To Predicting Chaotic Systems With Echo State Networks, Sophie Wu, Jackson Howe
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
An Echo State Network (ESN) with an activation function based on the Kuramoto model (Kuramoto ESN) is implemented, which can successfully predict the logistic map for a non-trivial number of time steps. The reservoir in the prediction stage exhibits binary dynamics when a good prediction is made, but the oscillators in the reservoir display a larger variability in states as the ESN’s prediction becomes worse. Analytical approaches to quantify how the Kuramoto ESN’s dynamics relate to its prediction are explored, as well as how the dynamics of the Kuramoto ESN relate to another widely studied physical model, the Ising model.
A Novel Method For Sensitivity Analysis Of Time-Averaged Chaotic System Solutions, Christian A. Spencer-Coker
A Novel Method For Sensitivity Analysis Of Time-Averaged Chaotic System Solutions, Christian A. Spencer-Coker
Theses and Dissertations
The direct and adjoint methods are to linearize the time-averaged solution of bounded dynamical systems about one or more design parameters. Hence, such methods are one way to obtain the gradient necessary in locally optimizing a dynamical system’s time-averaged behavior over those design parameters. However, when analyzing nonlinear systems whose solutions exhibit chaos, standard direct and adjoint sensitivity methods yield meaningless results due to time-local instability of the system. The present work proposes a new method of solving the direct and adjoint linear systems in time, then tests that method’s ability to solve instances of the Lorenz system that exhibit …
Lecture 09: Hierarchically Low Rank And Kronecker Methods, Rio Yokota
Lecture 09: Hierarchically Low Rank And Kronecker Methods, Rio Yokota
Mathematical Sciences Spring Lecture Series
Exploiting structures of matrices goes beyond identifying their non-zero patterns. In many cases, dense full-rank matrices have low-rank submatrices that can be exploited to construct fast approximate algorithms. In other cases, dense matrices can be decomposed into Kronecker factors that are much smaller than the original matrix. Sparsity is a consequence of the connectivity of the underlying geometry (mesh, graph, interaction list, etc.), whereas the rank-deficiency of submatrices is closely related to the distance within this underlying geometry. For high dimensional geometry encountered in data science applications, the curse of dimensionality poses a challenge for rank-structured approaches. On the other …

An Application Of The Unscented Kalman Filter For Spacecraft Attitude Estimation On Real And Simulated Light Curve Data, Kent A. Rush
An Application Of The Unscented Kalman Filter For Spacecraft Attitude Estimation On Real And Simulated Light Curve Data, Kent A. Rush
Master's Theses
In the past, analyses of lightcurve data have been applied to asteroids in order to determine their axis of rotation, rotation rate and other parameters. In recent decades, these analyses have begun to be applied in the domain of Earth orbiting spacecraft. Due to the complex geometry of spacecraft and the wide variety of parameters that can influence the way in which they reflect light, these analyses require more complex assumptions and a greater knowledge about the object being studied. Previous investigations have shown success in extracting attitude parameters from unresolved spacecraft using simulated data. This paper presents a focused …
Finding Music In Chaos: Designing And Composing With Virtual Instruments Inspired By Chaotic Equations, Landon P. Viator
Finding Music In Chaos: Designing And Composing With Virtual Instruments Inspired By Chaotic Equations, Landon P. Viator
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Using chaos theory to design novel audio synthesis engines has been explored little in computer music. This could be because of the difficulty of obtaining harmonic tones or the likelihood of chaos-based synthesis engines to explode, which then requires re-instantiating of the engine to proceed with sound production. This process is not desirable when composing because of the time wasted fixing the synthesis engine instead of the composer being able to focus completely on the creative aspects of composition. One way to remedy these issues is to connect chaotic equations to individual parts of the synthesis engine instead of relying …
The Effects Of Finite Precision On The Simulation Of The Double Pendulum, Rebecca Wild
The Effects Of Finite Precision On The Simulation Of The Double Pendulum, Rebecca Wild
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
We use mathematics to study physical problems because abstracting the information allows us to better analyze what could happen given any range and combination of parameters. The problem is that for complicated systems mathematical analysis becomes extremely cumbersome. The only effective and reasonable way to study the behavior of such systems is to simulate the event on a computer. However, the fact that the set of floating-point numbers is finite and the fact that they are unevenly distributed over the real number line raises a number of concerns when trying to simulate systems with chaotic behavior. In this research we …

Physical Applications Of The Geometric Minimum Action Method, George L. Poppe Jr.
Physical Applications Of The Geometric Minimum Action Method, George L. Poppe Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis extends the landscape of rare events problems solved on stochastic systems by means of the \textit{geometric minimum action method} (gMAM). These include partial differential equations (PDEs) such as the real Ginzburg-Landau equation (RGLE), the linear Schroedinger equation, along with various forms of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) including an application towards an ultra-short pulse mode-locked laser system (MLL).
Additionally we develop analytical tools that can be used alongside numerics to validate those solutions. This includes the use of instanton methods in deriving state transitions for the linear Schroedinger equation and the cubic diffusive NLSE.
These analytical solutions are …

Examining The Electrical Excitation, Calcium Signaling, And Mechanical Contraction Cycle In A Heart Cell, Kristen Deetz, Nygel Foster, Darius Leftwich, Chad Meyer, Shalin Patel, Carlos Barajas, Matthias K. Gobbert, Zana Coulibaly
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
As the leading cause of death in the United States, heart disease has become a principal concern in modern society. Cardiac arrhythmias can be caused by a dysregulation of calcium dynamics in cardiomyocytes. Calcium dysregulation, however, is not yet fully understood and is not easily predicted; this provides motivation for the subsequent research. Excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) is the process through which cardiomyocytes undergo contraction from an action potential. Calcium induced calcium release (CICR) is the mechanism through which electrical excitation is coupled with mechanical contraction through calcium signaling. The study of the interplay between electrical excitation, calcium signaling, and mechanical …

A Physics-Based Approach To Modeling Wildland Fire Spread Through Porous Fuel Beds, Tingting Tang
A Physics-Based Approach To Modeling Wildland Fire Spread Through Porous Fuel Beds, Tingting Tang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical Engineering
Wildfires are becoming increasingly erratic nowadays at least in part because of climate change. CFD (computational fluid dynamics)-based models with the potential of simulating extreme behaviors are gaining increasing attention as a means to predict such behavior in order to aid firefighting efforts. This dissertation describes a wildfire model based on the current understanding of wildfire physics. The model includes physics of turbulence, inhomogeneous porous fuel beds, heat release, ignition, and firebrands. A discrete dynamical system for flow in porous media is derived and incorporated into the subgrid-scale model for synthetic-velocity large-eddy simulation (LES), and a general porosity-permeability model is …

Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Challenges And Prospects Of Processes Utilising Carbonic Anhydrase For Co2 Separation, Patrycja Szeligiewicz, Wojciech M. Budzianowski
Wojciech Budzianowski
This article provides an analysis of processes for separation CO2 by using carbonic anhydrase enzyme with particular emphasis on reactive-membrane solutions. Three available processes are characterised. Main challenges and prospects are given. It is found that in view of numerous challenges practical applications of these processes will be difficult in near future. Further research is therefore needed for improving existing processes through finding methods for eliminating their main drawbacks such as short lifetime of carbonic anhydrase or low resistance of reactive membrane systems to impurities contained in flue gases from power plants.
